Product Description
The Ultimate Guide to Applied Strategies for Managing Business Units and Portfolios Two of the most important business trends of recent years are increasing corporate acquisitions and managing business units as individual companies with a synergistic relationship to the parent company. Business Portfolio Management is an indispensable tool for corporate managers and strategists involved in these pursuits. This no-nonsense reference cuts through the competing claims and conventional wisdom to take a hard look at the realities of portfolio management. It provides the concepts and strategies necessary to create real strategic alternatives, estimate accurately the value of each alternative, and understand the risks involved in each. It supplies a framework for choosing between alternatives, for making tradeoffs between risks and opportunities, and for understanding how individual units in a portfolio will interact. From beginning to end, the concepts, techniques, and situations discussed in Business Portfolio Management are illustrated with detailed examples drawn from actual consulting engagements conducted by the author and his colleagues. These examples not only provide specific descriptions of how portfolio management concepts are implemented in the real world, they also give a real-world picture of the magnitude of value increases that are created through effective portfolio management. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Linking strategy with the numbers
It's a book about strategy. The author shows how to establish avalue-creating business portfolio stategy, stressing the importance ofdeveloping different strategic alternatives, including possibleaquisitions, and assesing the risk involved. The book is an excellentchoice for those facing the definition of an optimal non-financialportfolio.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missing the point
The book was written probably some 15 years ago, when Real Options barely existed and the only tools available to consultants were efficient frontier and NPV.The treatment of risk vs. return is very simplistic, NPV conceptdoes not hold any more (ROV is a way to go).In summary: an outdated book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Job!
Michael Allen has portrayed the real meaning of portfolio management in a manner that is readily accessible to business executives. His concept of "full value" is a challenging one for anyone charged withcreating value where portfolios of products, business units, R&Dprojects, and so on, are involved. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep this one on your desk!
I use this text in a course I teach and I think it is a great basic primer. In explains in simple language the subjects that entrepreneurs must have a working knowledge of and many don't.If you are just out of undergrad business school, this may be too simple - but most entrepreneurs are 30+ and have been out of school for a while. This is a great, pragmatic tool for this group.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok... but I expected more....
Pros:
Definitions and concepts are introduced one at a time most of the time. Glossary is provided. Answers in even number problems are provided. Review and Discussion Questions are provided with no answers, but they can be easily checked in the corresponding chapters. Included in Appendix D is a case study on a donut shop of small business finance.

Cons:
Useless Excel spreadsheets that come with CD. The authors include Excel tables used in each chapters. Many times figures are HARD TYPED, not derived from formulas. Some people may want to use the spreadsheets for their own needs, but this practice diminishes the point of using a spreadsheet. Some concepts are not clearly or completely explained such as future value of an ordinary annuity, and EOQ (basically formulas in chap 8). The derivations of formulas are not provided, which let the reader merely memorize and simply plug in values in the formula without understanding the context to use and the assumptions. "Entrepreneurial" contents are scarce considering the intent of the book, which barely distinguishes itself from other typical corporate finance books. I would like to see more real life case studies such as the one in Appendix D, so that material learned throughout chapters can be demonstrated in the context and in a coherent manner. Interdependences and relations of concepts should be explicitly iterated and be shown with visual aids.

Prerequisite:
Basic algebra at junior high school level, including power, logarithm and summation. No prior knowledge of finance is assumed.

Comment:
I would look elsewhere for a basic finance book with more of application and implementation tastes. This may -not be fair to the authors' intention, but hands-on modeling with spreadsheet is a better and more sophisticated approach to me. I recommend to read any introductory finance book that explains concepts and their interdependence very well, then move on to a spreadsheet modeling book for implementation such as Financial Modeling by Benninga, Practical Management Science by Winston and Albright, Excel 2000 Formulas by Walkenbach, and Financial Models Using Simulation and Optimization by Winston. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The item I ordered delivered on time
The book was in better condition than it said on the website. It had very minimal writing in it.The book was in perfect condition other than that.I received the book during the time it said for shipment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Service
Multinational Business Finance (11th Edition) (The Addison-Wesley Series in Finance) The book isn't that good for a Finance course, but the seller was very prompt with shipping product after recieving payment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Multnational Business Finance
The book came so quickly and was in the condition it was described, good with minimal highlighting. Very happy with it

2-0 out of 5 stars Book Not worth the Money Paid
Too much money for a useless book!!!!

I strongly agree with the two reviews previous to mine. The book gets you interested at the begining, but let you down afterwards. It has little depth in the topics and many flaws when comes to explaining things. In exemple, the "Fisher Effect" was never explained, but all the book gives you is the formula. There is little explanation about the components and variables in the formulas. So, you have to rely heavily on your instructor.

There are almost no calculation examples and use of formulas. The teory in the book is not well explained either. So, you get more confused. That in my opinion is because the authors did not spend enough time to present the material clearly and the editors did not review and edit the book to increase the readability and comprehension. To illustrate what I am talking about, there is a lot of white space in the book (implies it lacks substance) and the text refers to graphs or charts shown in one/two pages before or after. Compared to other finance books I had in the past, this whole book looks like a compilation of bad summary sections.

In conclusion, it was not worth the money. It got me confused and wasted my time. In case you have to use it because it is mandatory, rely on your notes and instrutor's lectures.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lacks cohesion
This book has cursory overview of everthing and lacks detail. Also, each chapter starts well to get you excited on what you are going to learn and at the end of each chapter, you can't really tell whether it addressed the topics in enough details to give you the necessary understanding. ... Product Description
Discover a new, strategic brand of corporate communication that cuts through today's Dilbert-esque cynicism to engage workforces, manage constant change, and align organizations. In Beyond Spin, three experts detail the techniques of corporate journalism--an ingenious communications model that hinges on open, accurate, and strategically weighted reporting inside a corporation. With practical guidelines and real-world examples from SGI, Microsoft, J.P. Morgan, and other corporations, Beyond Spin helps you equip your company with this powerful new standard of communication--one that makes the most of every communications vehicle to keep your company aligned, nimble, innovative, and fiercely competitive.Amazon.com Review
Due to factors both within and outside their control, companies of all types now face internal and external communicationdemands that are central to their ultimate success. Markos Kounalakis,Drew Banks, and Kim Daus accordingly argue in Beyond Spin thatthe most efficacious way to handle them is more complicated than somebusiness leaders may initially imagine--but also more potent than thealternatives they may otherwise engage. Drawing on varied backgroundsin business and journalism, the authors craft a convincing argumentfor developing a holistic alliance between standard organizationalcommunication and traditional Western journalism that meets theseneeds. The goal of this refreshingly progressive approach, whichthey've dubbed strategic corporate journalism, is to create "awarenessand understanding through open, timely and accurate information flow." It has been employed in one manner or another by high-profile firmssuch as SGI, formerly Silicon Graphics, whose experiences under fireare examined in one chapter. Other chapters focus on the evolution andimpact of in-house PR and journalism for public consumption;development of effective communication networks in knowledge-basedorganizations; consequences of adopting or rejecting these principlesat companies such as Hewlett-Packard and ARCO; and future requirementsthese efforts will continually address. --Howard Rothman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Radical new approach to corporate communications
This is a very fresh look at corporate communications. Many executives (especially those caught in a short-term "Enron" mentality) are not likely to see the benefits of approaching communications in this way.Is it really so novel an idea that `truth' should be the basis of communication, even in business?Apparently...

This attitude has a common sense to it that is very appealing. If you speak truth to your employees than they will be less likely to have false expectations and become disenchanted and disgruntled. If you speak truth to your customers, they'll never feel cheated. Finally, if your company has spoken the truth, it will not have to face the disgrace of being caught out in a lie-which could destroy it.

Of course, the thought of turning your corporate communications office loose on your company like investigative journalists is probably alarming to most executives. The big question is, how else can you make sure your various departments and employees are motivated to tell the truth and held accountable when they don't?

The authors argue that companies need to re-tool the content, distribution and style of their corporate communications. If the company has good or bad news for its employees and its customers, it is better for the company to be the first to release the "story."Most organizations only deal with bad news when forces outside the company demand it, and then the organization is left scrambling and spinning-loosing credibility in the process.

This book has some fascinating ideas and considers some very important questions that all executives should think about.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't bother
This book still exists? Save your money, its just
more corporate blah, blah, blah by three people who claim to have changed the face of corporate journalism by building an intranet that supposedly changed a company. Nothing more than a bunch of back-patting by three people who did nothing but spend 6-12 mo. in 'employee communications' positions within SGI working with an intranet that was conceived and built way before they took over.
All three of them were escorted to the door because the company realized their ROI was zero. Too bad Markos, Drew and Kim...you couldn't get out of the way of your own 'spin.'

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
In a world overloaded with spin, the only way to cut through the bull is with the truth. So say the authors of Beyond Spin, which advises executives to allow their corporate communications staff to act as internal investigative journalists. The authors maintain that only by revealing the truth within your organization can you hope to guide the flow of information about and around your company in the digital era. Although many executives might find these concepts unworkable, we from getAbstract highly recommend this example-filled look for its fresh perspective on corporate communications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Great!
Finally!A book that does not insult the "worker in the trenches"!"Beyond Spin" takes the unbelievable position that cubicle dwellers have known all along-the spin upper level managementtries to put on its mistakes has never fooled anyone.Truthfulness incorporate communication shows respect and trust (thus fostering itscontinuance) between the corporation and its employees.Kudos to theauthors for their integrity and excellent writing! ...
