1-0 out of 5 stars DICK AND JANE
I purchased this book because I am interested in starting my own Freight Brokerage Business. In order to start your own brokerage company you "must" already know how to broker freight. What I am looking for is detailed information about where to start and everything that is needed to startup. This book just gives a "very simple" explanation about how you broker freight. This was a total waste of my money!!!! I have been in the trucking business for 21 yrs and have brokered freight for about 8 years so I already know in general what needs to be done. I need a book that is much much more informative about HOW TO START A FREIGHT BROKERAGE!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars not that great
Good for someone how is starting their own business, if you deal with your own company, is more of what already you do.

2-0 out of 5 stars Easy?

5-0 out of 5 stars No serious journalism student will be without this!
I've read this book cover-to-cover twice. Once to get an overview, and once to commit to memory so many of the useful tidbits and statistical studies.

Then, I also re-read each of the interviews and sidebars to gain an understanding of how others have dealt with the various issues.

Chapters 5 through 9 will be of benefit to first-year journalism students in understanding magazine organization and lines of authority.

I found, however, the greatest benefit for me came from chapters 14 and 15, Starting A New Magazine, part I and part II.

Also, Establishing A Circulation Base and Magazine Promotion, chapters 10 and 11, explain the process without getting overly technical. Actually, I found the explanation of the various markets and methods of achieving magazine sales to be the best concise treatment I have yet found.

If you are a journalism student getting prepared for entering employment in magazines, or are an experienced writer wanting to start your own magazine, this book will be a valuable asset that you will read again and again.

If you are an investor considering funding a new magazine this is a MUST buy, MUST read book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great primer on changes in magazines and the trends.
This is a good primer with a short introduction on the early days of magazines up through today and, perhaps, the future.

Leonard Mogel shows us how magazine publishers have adapted to the times and how they thrive more today than in during the Golden Years.

This book is not as helpful as others in starting a new periodical, but it is more helful for the college student wanting to enter the field for a living.

A definite must have for people wanting to understand magazine trends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A small business companion
I have read many books geared to the small business owner concerning marketing, and this book includes most if not all of the marketing stratagies I have read ,and quite a few I have not.
I find the stratagies very helpful and even if you are good at marketing, this book will help to refresh those old tips you may have forgotten ,I highly recommend this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Handy Marketing Resource for Small Business Operators
Brimming with basic, common sense marketing tips, this book should prove helpful for anyone starting out in business. Even experienced business people may find plenty of useful suggestions among the many that this book offers.

However, readers should use caution when applying some of the book's negotiating suggestions, as a tough, adversarial approach to vendor relations can sometimes backfire. For example, a retailer who demands exclusive rights to a product line without offering any commitment in return, might lose the product line altogether to a competing retailer who wins over the vendor with a greater show of enthusiasm.

Readers should also be very careful about following the book's advice to make it difficult for customers to remove themselves from email lists. Today's advertising-beleaguered customers are best retained through attraction. Causing them to feel annoyed, frustrated, or trapped will only earn their resentment.

But there are no more than a handful of controversial tips among the innumerable others that offer considerable benefit to small business operators. The sections on closing sales, Internet marketing, and trade-show presentation are alone worth the purchase price of the book. As a handy reference that will be consulted often by small business entrepreneurs, this book offers great value.

Paul Francis Musgrave, author of Indispensable Marketing Strategies: How Strategic Marketing Can Help You Achieve Business Success - A Marketing Strategy Guide for Profitable Business Management

3-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas can be found in the book
I found the book contained a great many ideas. Not all of them were useful for the service I was marketing, but enough of them were to make the price of the book acceptable. Some ideas (such as carrying your business cards with you and leaving them with everyone you come into contact with-even when paying bills at restaurants) seemed simple but were very effective in practice.I am new to marketing and I found that from the simple to the more complex means of putting your service out there this book is useful and allows the user to accelerate his or her marketing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entrepreneur Magazine's Ultimate Small Business Marketing Guide
Ultimate Small Business Marketing Guide boasts over 1500 marketing tips and tricks. This helpful information is divided into sections related to everything from research and planning through dealing with employees and improving customer service to advertising and creative selling. Each tip is also labelled with symbols that indicate approximately how much money it would take to implement this plan, if you can do the work yourself, if professional services are available in this particular area, as well as additional online or print resources that may help in this regard.

This book is thick and quite complete with ideas that are explained in good detail. The information is extremely well organized and easy to understand, flowing naturally from planning through sales. There are also lots of good checklists and surveys to help keep the entrepreneur organized and focused. Most of the information provided focuses on brick and mortar businesses. Nonetheless, a good deal of these notions can easily be modified for virtually any business brick and mortar or online.

4-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of Good Ideas
This book is not a cover-to-cover book about marketing theory, but rather a large series of examples that cover many marketing categories and topics. While I can't say I use a lot of these ideas everyday, many are good and for me, the best benefit is reading a wide variety of ideas in general. Marketing is more creativity than science in my opinion (once you identify a real market with some measure of certainty), so reading such a varied collection gets my mind thinking in new directions. That alone made the book worth it for my money. YMMV. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource!
While I was a bit skeptical about making such a purchase, thinking it was only going to be a reiteration of common sense, this book totally surprised me.It contains tips on just about anything a person considering starting their own business might wonder about and need to know from what type of name to use, to how to organize the business legally to how to best design business cards.I'm extremely impressed!

This is a great buy!

5-0 out of 5 stars It helping a novice!
Now I've taken a few business courses in college (accounting 101, Micro and Macro Economics, Statistics, etc), but I knew that starting a business would take some extra knowledge.

This book was an excellent reference for me.My particular business didn't fit the normal idea of a business, but the book still helped me explore both the direction that I wanted to go and the direction I wasn't going; just to make sure that I considered what I was doing in an objective manner.

I really appreciated this book in starting up my business, and it will surely get used as my business grows.

I liked how many different chapters there were, because it helped me to easily find answers to my questions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thorough, through and through.
This book is really thorough.I started my quest for information with the Dummies Retail Business Kit.That book was also really helpful, and a great introduction.I found Start Your Own Business to be a lot more informative and helpful than the Business Kit book, but I worry that if I had started with it, I would have been initially overwhelmed. There is a LOT of information.Unfortunately I still need more information that is specifically geared to the retail business, as this book is more broad. But VERY helpful.

In addition to consulting my businessplanning clients, I also write "small business expert" columns onthe Internet. In neither case can you afford to make a mistake advising aclient or a reader. Every question requiring research on fact and procedurefinds me pulling this book off the shelf before any other. Always, I findmy answer in this book in a manner that allows me to respond. Furthermore, most small business clients and readers are not thoroughly knowledged inthe terminology of finance and marketing. I always strive to explainmatters with the use of lay terminology that facilitates their learningprocess. The Small Business Advisor succeeds in helping me to achieve thatgoal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Start Your Own Self-Publishing Business
Start your Own Self-Publishing Business: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Success is the self-publishers' complete guide to starting their own publishing company either to self publish their own books or with the intention of taking on other writers' works in addition to their own. This book discusses in detail print, electronic, and audio publications and is complete with lots of examples, helpful forms, and smart tips.

I liked Start your Own Self-Publishing Business: Your Step-by-Step Guide to Success because it had all the information presented in a logical, well thought out, easy to understand manner without all the hype and author self promotion often found in other self-publication guides. I also found it extremely refreshing that this book's emphasis was on creating a quality publication rather than slapping some pages together, calling it a complete work, and then using clever advertising and blanket marketing techniques to get some poor reader to buy a copy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to Read
I purchased several books on this topic. The information is helful but I find out that there is a lot more to learn the more I read. You may want to explore what other useful information you may find online. After reading on this topic I find same or similar info in the books. For instance: That POD is not going to be very profitable since, it prints only few copies at a time. (Also how will you know that the POD company is not cheating you and is accurately reporting purchases and your reinbursement?)
The dissapointment comes from the fact that many of these books tell you that if you want to start your own publishing company, you would need at least $5000 and then some more. POD then is the cheapest way to get your book out and yet as I read in these books, the least profitable since, you would have minimal control over the price etc. I guess you will have to find out what works for you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate but Nothing Special
As a non-neophyte self-publisher, I have read several books like this.By a fair margin, Dan Poynter's offers the greatest value. This Entrepreneur Magazine book provides an adequate survey of the various steps you need to take to self-publish a book. But the authors lack the insight and humility that people who have actually gone through the travails of self-publishing would have.Instead, it relies on interviews with a scant four self-publishers, whose comments pop up in chapter after chapter. It reveals to you that getting a review in the New York Times Book Review could sell 10,000 of your books, then lets its favorite interviewee note a few pages further on that it's not likely that the Times will decide to review your self-published book, but send it anyway just in case.

Listen to me:trying to get reviews for a self-published book can be an exceedingly frustrating task. You can waste a lot of time, effort, and copies to no avail.Better advice:sift carefully through all the lists in this book but especially in Poynter's to find the few potential publications that have a real interest in your subject, then focus on them.No harm in sending a press release to everyone else, as is suggested in this book. And still your best shot at a solid review will come from personal connections or other unfair advantages you might have.Or sheer luck.

The underlying point:a self-publishing business makes little economic sense in the vast number of cases, partly because there are too many self-publishers, who just add to the amazing glut of books of all kinds that is driving the organized publishing industry crazy. For every success story, I will bet there are scores of disappointed self-publishers who sell a few dozen copies of their books every year.So what readers really need is not another book that tells you how to self-publish a book but rather one entitled:"Turn Your Crummy Self-Publishing Business into a Successful Independent Press".

Not easy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Should Have Listened to the 3-Star Reviewer!
I have to say that most of the time I'll disagree with the one guy who thinks a book sucks when many others have 4- and 5-star reviews. However, unfortunately, this wasn't the case for this book.

I should have avoided the book based on the fact that it was published by Entrepreneur Press.I've had plenty of doses of their extremely dry-as-dust home-business manuals (that they sell from their magazine) and this book was no exception. Not only was this book boring but it offered little useful content.

It's interesting because I've been looking into self-publishing for years and, out of everything I read, the ONLY thing that gave me the most information was a book that I got for FREE from Infinity Publishing (infinitypublishing.com) who prints self-published books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but no cigar

This book is well organized and the writing is fairly smooth, but it is basically second hand material. You're better off reading one good book about publishing and one good book about self-publishing.There's lots of material here gathered from various self-publishers, gurus and organizational heads in the field, but the author has obviously never self-published and really does not give you a good sense of it.Some glaring errors:the assumption that every self-publisher either lays out his own text in Adobe (InDesign at this point) or Quark Xpress or hands over a Word document to a printer who typesets it for a fee. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way and thousands of self-publishers use the services of typesetters or book designers to format their work before they ever approach a printer.
Other gaffes: 1. a complete misunderstanding of the difference between POD printers (which any self-publisher can use as an alternative to offset printing) and POD publishers like Xlibris.
2. A statement that endcaps and dumps are only given to big publishers with best- selling titles.Didn't anybody clue this guy to the fact that the big chains charge publishers for those endcaps and that if a group of books with a theme (romance for Valentines Day or vacationing in summer) is mounted on the endcaps a bunch of publishers will be paying some segment of the price for that exposure?
The book is well organized and has several worksheets but this is like reading a travel guide to Japan written by someone who has interviewed 12 travel writers and read up on basic research. Most of the information is correct, but it's just not the same as a book by someone who has actually visited Tokyo and Kyoto.
