5-0 out of 5 stars No serious journalism student will be without this!
I've read this book cover-to-cover twice. Once to get an overview, and once to commit to memory so many of the useful tidbits and statistical studies.

Then, I also re-read each of the interviews and sidebars to gain an understanding of how others have dealt with the various issues.

Chapters 5 through 9 will be of benefit to first-year journalism students in understanding magazine organization and lines of authority.

I found, however, the greatest benefit for me came from chapters 14 and 15, Starting A New Magazine, part I and part II.

Also, Establishing A Circulation Base and Magazine Promotion, chapters 10 and 11, explain the process without getting overly technical. Actually, I found the explanation of the various markets and methods of achieving magazine sales to be the best concise treatment I have yet found.

If you are a journalism student getting prepared for entering employment in magazines, or are an experienced writer wanting to start your own magazine, this book will be a valuable asset that you will read again and again.

If you are an investor considering funding a new magazine this is a MUST buy, MUST read book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great primer on changes in magazines and the trends.
This is a good primer with a short introduction on the early days of magazines up through today and, perhaps, the future.

Leonard Mogel shows us how magazine publishers have adapted to the times and how they thrive more today than in during the Golden Years.

This book is not as helpful as others in starting a new periodical, but it is more helful for the college student wanting to enter the field for a living.

A definite must have for people wanting to understand magazine trends. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good tips
This book has great tips on certain topics. However, the book really doesn't have a personal feel to it. Being a freight broker is a lot more complicated then this book makes it out to be. It also really glazes over topics that shouldn't be glazed over, like forming a customer base. The order in which the material is presented is also a bit lacking. For example, we discover what kind of money it takes to start the business, at the end of the book. It almost seems they are trying to portray this as a get rich quick scheme, instead of a fully functional self starting career.

2-0 out of 5 stars Broker Review
This book is an elementary review of freight brokering. It resembles a pamplet and I do not recommend it to anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very Limited Information
I am working with someone who is already familiar with this business. We just wanted more information on starting one of our own. This book has very little information for the more important components, like the cost of licenses or anything specific for that matter. Palo Alto Software will sell you the same book (perhaps a slight different version) in eBook form but for [...] dollars and are not upfront about their book being the Entrepreneur book. Do yourself a favor, find a better source for your startup. I should also mention a chunk of the book is available for FREE at [...] site.

4-0 out of 5 stars Freight Brokerage startup
Read the book cover to cover. Some of the contentis useful, some of the content was not. 1/2 the book was very generic to any business startup and didn't add value. I recommend the book but DO NOT purchase through the seller I used. The shipping time is painfully looooong and expensive.

2-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Useful...could use more general info
overall not bad....but a person trying to start their own biz will need more info than found in this book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars only for hard core fans
this was somewhat of a disappointment. i ordered through entrepreneurmagazine, and the shipped product did not seem like the same thing i readabout in their magazine. i was going to photocopy it and return for arefund, but the book was so awful i forgot i had it until after the returnexpiration date. althoug the book is somewhat helpful, the information(especially the info regarding the type of computer needed for office) wasextremely outdates. i bought this in the summer of 1999, and it mentionedsomething about buying a 386 computer with an 8800 bps modem. i would passon this, and stick to the more informative and less expensive selectionsavailable in the site. many of the pages seem like photocopies or evenblack and white printouts from an old laser printer, the folder accompaningthe information is nothing special either.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first book you should read on e-Business. Fun to read!
Confused over jargons and buzzwords such as CRM, MRO, B2B, B2E, e-Procurement? Loss in conversations about doing business over the Internet? Need a jump-start in understanding what e-Business and e-Commerce is all about? Then look no further. "E-Business Essentials" by Frank J Derfler may be the book you are looking for.

This book is probably the first of its kind that stresses on the importance of relationships in e-Business - relationships between your company and its customers, suppliers and employees. These relationships are the cornerstone to the three major building blocks of e-Business, Business to Consumer, Business to Business and Business to Employees. Each of these building blocks is discussed in details in its own section, substantiated with interesting real world case studies.

This book does not attempt to be a `how-to' manual. There are little or no technical design or architecture diagrams and definitely no code examples. Its main emphasis is on the `whys' and the `whats' of e-Business. Buzzwords and important concepts are conspicuously marked and defined in the margins of pages that discuss them.

Although written primarily for those with little or no exposure to the subject, it is by no means a 'Dummies' book. While it is written in layman's language and a style that is easy to understand, there are enough details to challenge the intellect. It will definitely lay a good foundation in the understanding of the fundamentals. Even those who have been in e-Business for a while will find this book refreshing and well organized. ... Read more
