Through the efforts of University of Guelph English professor J.R. (Tim) Struthers, Guelph is hosting 'A Visionary Tradition' - a scholarly conference on Canadian literature and culture. This nation-wide interdisciplinary conference, on now, is dedicated to a review of Canadian cultural achievements. "The main goal is to celebrate the cultural tradition already built in this country and to inspire younger generations to contribute to this tradition," says Struthers, the conference director. "This way, we'll have a thriving culture for the 21st century." Struthers, whose main research interest is the Canadian short story, is part of both visionary and traditional concepts of culture. He's been writing about Canadian literature for 25 years and teaching it for 15.

Extractions: on Canadian Literature Philip Marchand Ripostes is a collection of essays on some salient features of the Canadian literary landscape, a number of which were first published in the Toronto Star, many of which appear in these pages for the first time. Included are essays on Atwood, Findlay, Ondaatje and Margaret Laurence, as well as thematic explorations of Canadian literature such as an account of the demise of the Survival school of Canadian writing, a look at the recent history of the Writers' Union of Canada, an examination of the role of fathers in Canadian fiction, a study of the strange attraction of many of our writers to the occult, and so on. The tone is considered, and critical rather than celebratory, although the essays are respectful of the genuine achievements of Canadian literature in the past few decades. They try to clear the air, as it were, of boosterism, political correctness, and other attitudes which hinder the appreciation and reception of good writing. This is an honest re-appraisal of Canadian literature, undertaken at a time when we need no longer be overcome with relief and euphoria over the fact that some of our authors are now world famous, or at least world famous in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Extractions: The legends and songs of the aboriginal people were the first literature of Canada. The first peoples of the land constantly told stories - about their own adventures, about their ancestors, about every aspect of the land around them and about characters such as Coyote, Wee-sak-ee-chak, Nanabush, and Glooscap, the magnificent beings who roamed across the Canadian landscape. Through stories and songs, aboriginal peoples kept their history alive and passed it on to the next generations. Aboriginal storytelling has always been a communal experience. Stories brought people together to share a past, to explain the seemingly inexplicable in creation, to instruct, to use as a vital ingredient in a healing ceremony. Stories were used to teach and even discipline children. A strong story might make a child see the consequences of foolish actions or shame the child. This was often done in a humourous way, as teasing and joking served as a more effective social mechanism than direct reproof for pointing out mistakes. Within their own cultures, all aboriginal people knew stories and could make reference to them at appropriate times. When Europeans arrived on the shores of 'Turtle Island,' as it was called by some aboriginal peoples and encountered this rich oral tradition, they responded in one of two ways. Some of the early priests and traders recognized the richness of the oral culture and strove to learn their languages and adapt to the complex new forms of oral statesmanship attained by aboriginal leaders. But other newcomers considered the aboriginal cultures to be "savage" or backward because they lacked written forms of communication.

Extractions: The Arts Report Halifax - Malcolm Ross, the man popularly known as "the father of Canadian literature," died Monday in Halifax. He was 91. Although he disliked the moniker, Ross shaped the publishing industry into the one we know today. In the late 1950s, Ross was the head of the English department at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. He persuaded a former studentpublisher Jack McClellandto release hardcover Canadian novels in paperback, something never before done in Canada on a wide scale. Such is My Beloved by Morley Callaghan. In hardcover, the book had sold 300 copies. The NCL paperback edition eventually sold 200,000. "People began to wake up to Canadian literature," Dalhousie English professor Andy Wainwright told the

Extractions: Jean Margaret (Peggy) Wemyss was born in Neepawa, Manitoba, on July 18, 1926, to Robert Harrison Wemyss, a lawyer, and his wife Verna Jean, née Simpson. Verna died when Peggy was four years old, and Robert later married Verna's sister, Margaret Campbell Simpson, a teacher and later a librarian, who was throughout the years one of Peggy's "greatest encouragers.” After Robert Wemyss's death, when Peggy was 9 and her brother still a baby, the family went to live with Grandfather Simpson in his big brick house on First Avenue. The Neepawa Press in the summer of 1943. Miss Mildred Musgrove, her English teacher, gave her valuable criticism and encouragement during her school years. In a letter written in 1983, Margaret stated, "I was an extremely fortunate child. As someone who has always been interested in reading and in writing (which I began to do in about Grade 2 or 3), I always had someone there who encouraged me."

Katie Vella Welcome to the Horton Journal of Canadian Literature a forum that features the writings of the students enrolled in the Canadian Literature 12 course at Horton High School for the 2001-2002 academic year. Horton High School is located in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, and is the home of the Griffins. The students enrolled in Canadian Literature 12 completed numerous essays, presentations and novel studies on the works of many of Canada's literary giants, the likes of Margaret Atwood, Morley Callaghan, Alistair MacLeod, Wayne Johnston, Mordecai Richler, Gabrielle Roy, and W.O. Mitchell - to name just a few. Three such units studied and explored throughout the course of the year focused on Short Stories, Editorial Commentaries and Poetry. As a means of integrating these studies with the students' own writing abilities, each student submitted works of their own. This journal features most of these works for your perusal.
