Rabbits, hamsters, gerbils, rats, mice, guinea pigs, and ferrets are often called "pocket pets" because they are small, cute, and inexpensive. These small animals have specific diet, housing, and handling requirements, and they need care and attention just as much as a dog or cat. And if they're well cared for, they can also be just as much fun. No place like home You can enrich your pet's environment and keep him comfortable and active with a number of accessories. A "hide box"a small box, tube, or other enclosed area where your pet can conceal himself-will make him feel safe and comfortable. Plastic tunnels, wheels, hollow rolling balls with latching lids, and other toys are available that can let your pet exercise. Make sure your pet is safe and can't get trapped inside or catch his feet or tail on a seam or a corner. Also make sure that the toys are made out of metal or durable plastic so your furry friend can't chew and ingest them. You can buy chewing blocks made out of wood or very dense pressed plant fibers for rodents. Rodents' teeth grow throughout their lifetimesthey chew constantly to keep their choppers filed down to a comfortable length.

Extractions: Anyone who desires to have a chinchilla enter his or her life knows the reason. They are soft, beautiful and a joy to have around. If you are reading this, you are probably interested in how to take care of such a beautiful little creature. I will, therefore, keep the background information as brief as possible. Chinchillas are so far classified as rodents, the same as mice, rats and guinea pigs just to name a few. They originally came from South America and thrived in high altitudes. The original color of chinchillas is a grayish, although breeders today have been able to breed them in a wide array of colors, but more about that later. Unfortunately, chinchillas were first captured and made popular for the fur trade. They still are. The original color is still the one that is most highly prized. Eventually people started to go to chinchilla farms to obtain pets and the idea caught on. One thing led to another and we now have many breeders and pet shops selling these beautiful fur balls.

Ness, DVM The chinchilla is a hystricomorph rodent, closely related to the guinea pig and porcupine. They are native to the Andes Mountain areas of Peru Bolivia Chile , and Argentina In the wild state, they live at high altitudes in rocky, barren mountainous regions. They have been bred in captivity since 1923 primarily for their pelts. Some chinchillas fortunate enough to have substandard furs were sold as pets or research animals. Today chinchillas are still raised for pets, pelts and research. Chinchillas are fairly clean, odorless, and friendly pets, but they are usually shy and easily frightened. They do not make very good pets for young children, since they tend to be high strung and hyperactive. The fur is extremely soft and beautiful bluish gray in color, thus leading to their popularity in the pelt industry. Current color mutations include white, silver, beige, and black. Habitat Chinchillas must be kept in an area that has good lighting, adequate ventilation, and cool, dry air. They do not tolerate heat or humidity, and they thrive at lower temperatures.

Rabbit pellets and rodent/hamster mixes are not suitable. The use of wrong foods will reduce the life span and breeding capability. Any changes in diet must be introduced gradually. You should mix the two foods together and gradually increase the volume of the new food and reduce the volume of the old one until a total change is achieved.
