Source: George Grant. Picturesque Canada . vol. 2 (1882). The artist who depicted Guelph for Picturesque Canada in the early 1880s emphasizes some of the Gothic spires which dominated the skyline. (Figure 1). The fledgling city had been transformed in the previous twenty years from a frontier community built in a late Georgian classical tradition, to a Victorian city dressed up in the latest metropolitan style. Guelph's rapid transformation was typical of changes throughout Ontario. and indeed. the entire English speaking world. At a general cultural level, this "profusion of spires", as one historian has put it. represented an attempt by the various Christian churches to proclaim the power of the sacred in the face of a society that was becoming increasingly secular and materialistic. More particularly. this Gothic revival can be traced to Great Britain, where this movement originated mainly among church architects and architectural critics. It was popularized in Canada by British-born and trained architects such as William Thomas and William Hay, or by Canadians trained by them. such as Henry Langley.

    Extractions: We have recently added an 1800 seat auditorium to an existing church facility in North Dallas. The building exterior is designed to tie into the existing buildings. By creating a wrap around seating arrangement in the auditorium we maximized the sense of community within the space, as well as improving the sense of intimacy between the pastor and the congregation. A large atrium serves as a foyer for the auditorium and provides an additional area for congregating.     Extractions: In early, 2000 we were looking for a dog to begin quail hunting again. We were looking for a versatile dog that could hunt not only upland birds but other birds such as waterfowl. We had committed for a Brittany Spaniel when one morning on ESPN Outdoors we saw a clip on the St. Usuge Spaniel. On contacting the St. Louis owners we found these dogs to be just to our liking. In March, 2000 we purchased a 6 month old male named Peyton. At that time he was one of only 8 in the United States Peyton doing what he loves best. While our intent was to find a good hunting dog we were also interested in breeding the dogs as well to the end we spent a year locating a female that was bloodline compatible to our male. In May, 2002 we secured a female from M Serge Bey and the French St. Usuge Club. We flew her here direct from France and picked her up in Chicago . Her name is Sawn a French name that has no English translation. Because she is so bold our nickname for her is “Little Sh..!”

Craftsman architecture is most familiarly associated with residential designs- -bungalows and cottages, and examples of this style can be found throughout the country. Craftsman churches, though, were much less common outside the West Coast and were usually limited to seaside, mountainous, or rural resort and vacation regions where their rustic qualities were believed to be more appropriate. On the West Coast, particularly in San Francisco Bay Area, numerous Craftsman style churches were designed and built in the early twentieth centuryeven in urban contexts where their unorthodox style was readily adopted and accepted. One of the earliest Craftsman churches, the Church of the New Jerusalem in San Francisco, coexists along with more traditional church architecture. True to his Craftsman ideals, Maybeck declared that his church was to be "the same on the inside as on the outside, without sham or hypocrisy." But unlike many Craftsman designers, he also enjoyed exploring new materials. His use of exposed concrete, metal factory-sash windows and asbestos wall sheathing was innovative, but certainly shocking- -especially for sacred purposes. Yet Maybeck brought to these materials a warm and humane touch that has rarely been replicated. The vines and redwood structural elements soften the industrial materials, creating an exterior of great charm and individuality.

    Extractions: The building boom at the turn of the 20th century In a similar way to the period following the Second World War, the end of the 19th century was a period of growth. This was true not only for the population but also for the infrastructure needed to service a considerably enlarged area of settled land. Towns had never been so heavily populated, and this was in spite of the development of the backlands of the Saint Lawrence valley and the number of new villages being established . New parishes - there were about 300 created at this time - came into being in towns and countryside. Instead of starting with small chapels, they decided to build permanent churches. The older parishes also decided to replace or enlarge their places of worship which up until then had often been simple chapels which were much too small.
