Lewis, Manchester Community College TOPOGRAPHY Connecticut has an area of 4,965 square miles (about 12,908 square kilometers). It is located between latitude 41° N and latitude 42° N on the eastern side of the North American land mass. The distance between the eastern and western border is ninety miles (145 kilometers), and there is a fifty-mile (eighty kilometers) average distance between the northern and southern border. Connecticut is the third smallest state in the United States—only Delaware and Rhode Island are smaller. Many of the valley floors and lake surfaces in northwestern and northeastern Connecticut are higher than 600 feet (182 meters) above sea level. Some in the northwest are between 1,700 feet (518 meters) and 1,900 feet (570 meters) above the level of Long Island Sound. There are no tree mountains in Connecticut. The highest point is on the southern slope of Mt. Frissel in Salisbury, 2,380 feet (725 meters) high. The peak is in Massachusetts. The highest peak, Bear Mountain, also in Salisbury, is 2,316 feet (705 meters) high. This is far less than the 6,288 feet (1,917 meters) height of Mount Washington in New Hampshire, the highest point in the northeastern United States. Nearly 500 million years ago, during the early Paleozoic era, the land which is now Connecticut was largely flat and low lying, part of a huge, down-folded area in which thousands of feet of marine sedimentary deposits had accumulated. Volcanoes to the east were also a major source of sediment. About 360 million years ago, as the North American Continental Plate collided with the European Plate, mountain building caused much of the sediment in the eastern part of North America to be severely crumpled and broken into pieces that slid over each other. The earlier formed Paleozoic strata was severely folded, faulted, and generally metamorphosed to become the rocks which are a major component at the hills of eastern and western Connecticut.

Its headwaters are Fourth Connecticut Lake at the Canadian border, and it empties into Long Island Sound at Old Saybrook, CT. The watershed encompasses an area of over 11,000 square-miles and includes parts of four states Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. The River is the boundary between Vermont and New Hampshire (but is wholly in NH). The watershed is 80% forested, 12% agricultural, 3% developed, and 5% wetlands and water. There are 390 towns, villages and cities, which are home to 2.3 million people. The River drops 2,400 feet from its source to the sea, and has a daily average flow of nearly 16,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). The flow has ranged as high as 282,000 cfs and as low as 971 cfs. The lower 60 miles of the River are tidal, with the boundary between salt and freshwater about 17 miles from its mouth under normal conditions. Its waters represent 70% of the freshwater inflow to L.I. Sound. The Connecticut has 38 major tributaries, 26 of which drain 100 square miles or more. All told, there are over 20,000 miles of streams in the watershed.

    Extractions: This past year has been a busy one at the University of Connecticut, Homer Babbidge Library's Map and Geographic Information Center. Recognizing that raster data, and especially images will play an increasing role in our understanding, and research, of Connecticut's geography, the MAGIC team has been exploring solutions to making very large images files available to the University's user community and our guests. We are using ER Mapper Image Web Server to serve these images up. ER Mapper uses a wavelet compression which provides the user with just the data they can see in their window extent, thereby speedinging access. The images only work with MS Internet Explorer on these HTML pages. They have been geo-referenced to Conn. State Plane, NAD 83, map units = feet. ER Mapper provides a nifty plug-in that enables the user to access these files from within a number of programs, including ArcView.
