And from this derived an appetite for all things Australian - especially books which reinterpreted the past with a local perspective and gave voice to the rapidly-changing present. The young playwrights then emerging became leaders in this movement. Their work, like the student revolution itself, was iconoclastic, bombastic and attention-seeking. Along with the Vietnam moratorium marches in the late 60s came radical changes of another kind, led by the young artists. These included a freeing of outdated censorship laws; the establishment of the Federal funding body, the Australian Council for the Arts (now the Australia Council); the rebirth of the film industry; anti-uranium mining, land rights for Aboriginal people and environmental movements; and the setting up of major regional State-funded theatre companies. By l971 the Australian playwright had a voice, a stage and a public for the first time since the days of the old purveyors of melodrama at the turn of the century. Currency Press was launched in response to all these changes. It was built up gradually during the 19th century with the aim of increasing trade, and thus political unity, between the fragmented states of the German Confederation. Starting in 1818 with the North German Zollverein, more countries joined in 1834 and in 1866. This was followed by a series of acts to standardise the disparate systems of coinage, weights and measures used across the area. A variety of coins were minted and used by the different states and only some were commonly recognised; bank notes were not legal tender. The Zollverein proved to be a great success and undoubtedly helped to secure the political unification of Germany in 1871, at the end of the Franco-Prussian war. In 1876 the Prussian Bank became the Reichbank, controlling all coinage and paper currency, and Germany's now-unified currency - the Reichsmark - was stable enough to go on the gold standard. However, in 1775, when the Revolutionary War became inevitable, the Continental Congress authorized the issuance of currency to finance the conflict. Paul Revere made the first plates for this "Continental Currency". Those notes were redeemable in Spanish Milled Dollars. The depreciation of this currency gave rise to the phrase "not worth a Continental". After the U.S. Constitution was ratified, Congress passed the "Mint Act" of April 2, 1792, which established the coinage system of the United States and the dollar as our principal unit of currency. By this Act, we became the first country in the world to adopt the decimal system for currency. The first U.S. coins were struck in 1793 at the Philadelphia Mint and presented to Martha Washington.

Each bill carried a different design, making it difficult to detect counterfeit bills from the 7,000 varieties of real bills. A national currency was adopted in 1862 to resolve the counterfeiting problem. However, the national currency was soon counterfeited and circulated so extensively that it became necessary to take enforcement measures. Therefore, on July 5, 1865, the United States Secret Service was established to suppress the wide-spread counterfeiting of this nation's currency.

Among the Roman-Portuguese coinage of the first era, several types are known, some with latin or iberian inscriptions. Portugal as well as the rest of the Iberian Peninsula , was completely romanized during the Empire ( 30 B.C. ) . Several colonies were founded in commercial harbours such as Lisbon and Oporto and also in strategic military routes and the coinage of money continued throughout Lusitânia. In the beginning of the 5th century , the Iberian Peninsula was invaded by the Suevos, Vândalos and Alanos and until the arrival of the Visigoth , the coinage was made in Braga. Almost all the Visigoth kings ordered the coinage of money in the territory later known as Portugal. From the 9th century on , the lands situates between Braga and the River Vouga , were named Portucalense . This Portucale County would give origin to the nations future name. D. Afonso Henriques (1128-1185 ) is considered to be the founder of the Portuguese kingdom.

Convicts received no wages and the early settlers and military personnel had their needs supplied from communal stores. With only a small quantity of English and foreign coins brought with the First Fleet, most of the dealings in the first few years consisted of bartering, with rum being the main means of exchange. Handwritten notes of credit, issued by government officials and backed by the English treasury, were a common form of currency, but these were subject to counterfeiting and devaluation. The earliest currency used was English money, and also the Spanish dollar brought by the early ships. Because of the shortage of English money, and to prevent the Spanish dollars being taken back on the ships, Governor Macquarie had their centres cut out and they became known as 'holey dollars', while the cores became 'dumps'. In 1813 they had "New South Wales 1813" stamped on them, with "Five Shillings" on the reverse side. The 'dump' had "New South Wales 1813" stamped on their cleaned and smoothed surface with "Fifteen Pence" on the reverse side. In 1817 the Bank of New South Wales was established. The first issue of banknotes comprised five shillings, ten shillings, one pound and five pounds and paper tokens for one shilling, one shilling and sixpence, two shillings, and two shillings and sixpence. In 1825 the British Government imposed the sterling standard throughout its Empire and English coins were minted in Australia.

Today, we usually think of dollars and coins when we define what we regard as money, although much commerce is carried out without any physical currency at all. Value is counted by entries in bank and credit card accounts, and the transfer of money often takes place through electronic impulses between computers. Objects have served the same purposes as well, in other times and places. Throughout Africa's past, many objects have served as money, salt, shells, beads, metal, indigenous coins, European coins, jewelry, woven cloth, weapons and tools.
