Product Description
HP provides an impressive quantity of user documentation, but quantity is no guarantee of quality! Tom Barber has been a professional programmer of the C/UNIX persuasion for more than 25 years, hooked on HP calculators since his college days when he implemented Gaussian quadrature on the HP25. The reputation of HP calculators as being somewhat difficult to use, has a lot to do with the user documentation. That is why he wrote this book.Written primarily for novice users, experienced users who occasionally find themselves frustrated may also find help within the pages. The author takes a tutorial approach for certain topics such as the Equation Writer, and overall, his narrative explanations are better organized and more complete than HP's manuals. He uses tables and lists for topics where a more accessible summary of essential facts and behaviors is needed. He paid careful attention to the importance of writing in a clear, precise manner.Topics covered include:Essential Architectural FeaturesKeypad operationEssential calculator modesWhat the CAS modes Numeric and Approx actually doBasic entry techniques using the command lineTechniques and commands to manage global variablesThe text editorThe Equation WriterScreen-based re-use of prior expressionsListsCustom menusUnit objects, Units conversions and the Constants LibraryComplex numbers and ordered pairsVectors and arraysBinary integers and number basesCharacter/Text StringsThe Matrix WriterStatistics applicationsThe Equation SolverThe TVM Financial SolverThe numerical solvers for polynomials and systems of equationsProgrammatic management of the stack in RPN modeRecursive evaluation of the RPN command line and RPL programsProgramming the calculator in RPLTechniques for manipulating algebraic expressions symbolicallyPlottingThe File ManagerSystem Operation8.5 x 11, 110 pages, equivalent to 250 pages in a more typical handbook format. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars surprisingly useful
This is a surprisingly useful little book that fills in some major gaps in the HP documentation. Its principle utility is that the author takes the time to, in general, explain the underlying *logic* of the various components of th HP 49/50g's architecture, something that the HP documentation largely omits. The HP documentation tends to focus on key-by-key instructions; this treatment glosses over that to focus on the underlying concepts.

It is not, however, a replacement for those documents. Many features, particularly in the libraries, are skipped or treated superficially. There is also a presumption that the reader is somewhat computer/software savvy. He spends considerable space on details and idiosyncracies that, while important if you run into them, may charitably be considered obscure for must of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I waited to give a review of this book until after I had a chance to really use it. It is GREAT! With the documentation that HP provides in PDF format, you can figure out problems without going to the forums and waiting for help. The hardest problem I had was getting the command syntax right. The HP manuals have some good examples, but, Mr. Barber gives examples that the User's Guide or Advanced Users Guide don't have. The included program even works after you correct a few typos.

5-0 out of 5 stars mostly a descriptive version of the printed manual. nice and to the point.
I have not had time to read the manual completely but about half way through.
It is very concise reading and is to the point. seems to cover everything so far as I can see.

2-0 out of 5 stars Gives me a headache...
This guide does contain a lot of valuable information, but it is very poorly written - not a professional quality document - lengthy, wordy prose, long paragraphs, poorly organized. For some reason, these calculators are plagued with horrible documentation, no matter who writes it. Apparently, the assumption is that if you're smart enough to use them, you should be smart enough to figure them out. This is true - but it's time consuming and not worth it unless you REALLY need the functionality they provide. If you must use one of the advanced HP calculators, this pamplet may be of some help if it doesn't give you a headache - otherwise buy an HP 40GS, which is the best grapher on the market by a long shot and costs half the price of a 50G. 40GS comes with a great manual and is very intuitive to use and program.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Little Better Than Okay
I am a novice to programmable calculators. And I have to say, the book was written a little better than the HP 50g user's manual, and I often get a headaches reading this book.

But I did learn some things from this book --directly and indirectly. Here's what I learned directly from this book: RPN, Number Format, CAS Modes, Equation Writer, and Equation Solver. While I was reading this book I also found some incredible features. Such as factoring expressions like 3x^3+14x^2+17x+6 to (x+1)*(x+3)*(3x+2)and vice versa.
The calculator is impressive, and this book did introduce me to some awesome features.

If the book had more graphical illustrations and more examples, I would give it five stars. Because I was often lost just reading the texts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A High School Math Teacher's Point of View
This is an excellent book. Its lab-style approach with practical / tangible sets of data coupled with on-target follow-up questions makes this a wonderful book to teach and learn from. This version of the textbook focuses on using a TI-83 calculator to organize, display and analyze data in most of the problems.Managing the data lists for the TI-83 calculators in class can be difficult. I recommend that you ... download the program files that Al Coons put together. He placed all the individual data lists for each problem into programs. This makes it easy to manage and transfer these files to other calculators. Especially between TI-83+ and TI-83 calculators.Solutions to the "Activities" problems and various supplementary materials can be downloaded.... I recommend using Adobe Acrobat to download the "Activities" solutions.I made the mistake of using an old web-browser and wasted a whole summer copying and pasting. This may sound obvious, but it must be stressed....Answer all of the problems that you plan to work on in class or assign for homework prior to the actual class. Some problems require advance preparation or data collected from previous class activity problems. You need to find this out before walking into a classroom. This is the first time that I've taught an AP-Statistics course and the approach of this book takes a little getting used to. I'm having a ball! I rely heavily upon this book and the Barron's AP-Statistics study guide. Good Luck. It's a great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Complicated but easy to understand.
I read this book during my senior AP Bio class. My Biology teacher yelled at me for reading it during her class. So I left, because I didn't want to be yelled at.I then received a detention. Then I couldn't do mystatistics homework and I failed the class. The book was stimulating ifsomewhat bland.I am writing this in a Starbucks in Toronto.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really easy to understand. Great way to explore your TI-83.
I used this book in my AP Statistics class my senior year of high school. The Workshop Statistics book was really easy to follow and understand. I have always had a hard time with math, but when I used this book, I pickedup on the concepts quicker. The only problem I had with this book is thefact that explanations of the formulas and procedures were not expained asclearly as I would have liked. This book is also a great way to orientyourself with your TI-83 scientific calculator (Texas Instraments). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy customer service
I emailed this seller THREE times and NEVER heard back. All I wanted was my tracking information. I even emailed Amazon customer service and they told me I had to wait the alloted time given when purchasing from an outside seller. I paid for expedited shipping and it took almost two weeks to receive. In the seller notes, it states that items ship within two days. I specifically ordered from this seller BECAUSE they are in the same state as me, expecting it would be quicker to receive, especially paying extra for expedited shipping. Extremely disappointed with the lousy customer service. How hard is it to send a customer tracking info? Seriously???

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book, check your course requirements first though.
This is a great reference and I use it on a regular basis, however on the first day of class the professor told us all to return the book as the class would be tought completely online. Amazon prices are outstanding and saved me plenty of money. this book alone saved $80.00

Came on time and just what I expected. Perfect order and I'm glad I did it.

1-0 out of 5 stars A nightmare
I purchased Intermediate Algebra: Graphs & Models for an online college course. In the blurb as to what was included were those vital words-includes MyMathLab and a supplement. Unfortunately, all you get is the book. The MyMathLab is absolutely necessary for my online course since that is where I must access all homework and some tests. They are even graded there as well. MyMathLab also includes videos, powerpoint presentations and multi-media presentations to go with the book. I will say though that Amazon was great about this. They sent another the day after I called but unfortunately the blurb was wrong-you only got the book. They took both books back with no problems so that helped.
