Book Description
The classic in the series of highly respected Swokowski/Cole mathematics texts retains the elements that have made it so popular with instructors and students alike: its exposition is clear, the time-tested exercise sets feature a variety of applications, its uncluttered layout is appealing, and the difficulty level of problems is appropriate and consistent. The goal of this text is to prepare students for further courses in mathematics.

This book is set apart from the competition in a number of ways: it is mathematically sound, it focuses on preparing students for further courses in mathematics, and it has excellent problem sets. This edition has been improved in many respects. All of the chapters include numerous technology inserts with specific keystrokes for the TI-83 Plus and the TI-86, ideal for students who are working with a calculator for the first time. The new design of the text makes the technology inserts easily identifiable, so if a professor prefers to skip these sections it is simple to do so. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A really bad math book
Precalculus is hard enough without having to use a book like this. I thought that the prose was unreadable, the graphics confusing, and many of the exercises supercomplicated (our professor thought so too). In my opinion *Algebra and Trignometry* is a triumph of marketing over pedagogical competence. My advice? Not only should you not buy this book; you should avoid a class in which it is assigned.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful!
I teach a high school class for advanced mathematics in preparation for college maths, and I honestly have to say that this is the worst book from which to teach.Yes, I can understand it perfectly, but a student will be lost the moment he or she lays eyes on the first page. The only good thing about this book is the number of exercises it has in each section.

1-0 out of 5 stars For mathematicians, by mathmematicians
Frankly, I found this text way too brief in its coverage of topics prior to being bombarded with questions. There isn't much good to say about this book other than providing lots of problems to work. Save yourself the money and buy a "10000 problem" text instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid math textbook
I'm a little torn on what to say about this book. On one hand, I have a huge amount of respect for this book. On the other hand, it's not an easy book to learn from.

I have no doubt that if people work through this book, they will be very knowledgable and skilled in the areas covered. It is, however, a slow, tedious, sometimes frustrating process. The authors are clearly proficient at math, but their style is pretty dry. It's a "just the facts, ma'am" approach to instruction. It would be nice to have perspective, interpretation, and helpful guidance in addition to straight math. It's kind of like reading a technical manual.I prefer a more engaging presentation.

1-0 out of 5 stars A math book that leaves you stranded
This book is required by my college and dealing with it was the mostunpleasant period of my life.Prior to using this book I used the SaxonMath Program in which each lesson contains enough information to learn thematerial without the help of an instructor. There is no way that you canteach yourself from this book if you don't all ready know the material, andmany math professors are lazy and tell you to get the knowledge out of thebook. The lesson material is too brief and the explanations are almostcryptic. The solutions manual that comes with it is supposed to have theanswers to all the odd problems, but the author decided to leave out acouple of these problems in which the answer would take up a little morepaper than the others, these are often the ones you need the solutions to,the book just leaves you stranded. If you have to use this book, I pityyou, you better hope that you have a darn good math professor. If youdon't have to use it, steer clear of it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and understandable.
At the beginning I was a bit worried about the way the book explains the material. It seemed too simple for a book dealing with more complex subjects in math such as functions, trigonometry and analytic geometry. Then again it could be said that this quality is the one that makes the book such a joy to read.

Not a single time did I felt lost or confused by the presentation. Most of the graphics and photos do supplement the explanation, and help the reader grasp the information better. One of the highlights, one that perhaps most people will miss, is the simple review questions at the beginning of each section. These little snippets of previous material force the reader to review those concepts that will be essential for further understanding.

Every new section in the book is short and clear; thus reducing the amount of explanation, but at the same time maintaining just enough so that the reader will not feel lost in the many formulas and derivations. If this book does not get "5 starts" from my review it is only because it could be more mathematically rigorous by presenting more proofs. But by not doing so it increases the clarity and easy presentation the book possesses - great book well worth the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars reviews for the 7th edition?
why are the reviews for the 6th and 7th edition of this book the same?is there no difference between editions, such that reviews for the 6th should be kept for the 6th.the 7th edition might have changes that could cause some to review/change a viewpoint about its content.maybe at the core they are the same book/method, but it is overall a different book and the reviews should be kept edition specific.

it is my opinion that amazon will not post this as it obviously not a review, but it my contention that the 8 posted are not reviews of this edition, either.why are they posted?

5-0 out of 5 stars well designed for self study
I taught 2 sections of precalculus with this book last spring. This book is well designed for self study. Examples are keyed to specific exercises so the student is directed to use a concept immediately after seeing it employed in a suitable exercise.

My one quibble with the book is the way trigonometry is introduced. It seems to be needlessly convoluted so if you are thinking of adopting it you should read the first two or three sections covering trig. I chose to supplement it with my own notes.

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to supplement a high school precalculus course with a book that is stronger on theory vs. graphing calculator techniques. There are some very inadequate precalculus texts out there. If you are serious about mathematics and your school is using an approach that employs graphing calculators in a heavy way, you may want to use this book. In that case consider an older (cheaper) edition.

Update: Another reviewer comments that the 7th ed and the 6th ed may be significantly different. Well, they are not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book. Especially With Solution Manual.
Bought the teachers edition and 2 solution manual books (1500+pages each) all for 63 bucks. BRAND NEW!

Anyways, this book I find to be a lot better than many many of the other math text books out there. What is nice about this book is the simple fact that it doesn't try as hard to fool you as the others. Other text books seem to be written by people that are really advanced and think, in a way, that we are as well. They sometimes don't realize that the stuff they put down into text books might be a lot harder to someone that doesn't have a firm gasp and understanding as they have.

I mean...don't you hate text books that give you examples and solutions, but all of the examples are of easy problems and the ones that you do want to know are not shown? In highschool, I didn't know weither to use my math text books to learn or use it as heating fuel for the winter nights. Listening to the teacher wasn't very helpful because he followed the pace of his more advance nerdy students and using the book to catch up helped as much as little if nothing.

This book, however, can actually teach you pretty much everything step by step, especially if you use it with the solutions manual which shows you step by step how the answers are achieved. For once, I'm learning more from the book than from the teacher. They should hire the book, it would be cheaper. I'm sure the book will grade us by a curve as well and be nicer to us. This whole summer semester I've been learning almost everything from the book, the teacher is just extra.

The way the book is made, its an accumalative (spelled wrongly I bet) kind of thing. You can learn it all if you go through it from a to z, beginnig to end. Of course you'll still need guidance here and there, but it is made so clearly that it gives you a peace of mind. Suddenly, the secret codes are being decoded.

A pretty looking book that'll probably cost you a bundle (USED in textbook store for $109!?) however is all worth it. Spend your money on something that is really worth it and get this, solutions manual about $35 more or less.

COLLEGE MATH: 1+1=3 (Learn it well young grasshopper, cause one day, we shall see which affects the other more)

4-0 out of 5 stars Book explains, but does not teach too well.
If this is a textbook... you don't have much of a choice: get it, or drop the class.

Other than that, the textbook is OK. Not great, since it does not explain to well. Basically, it gives you a forumla, spends about 1/4th of a page using that forumla once, and then moves on. At the end of each section, there are about 100 questions, at the end of the chapter there are another 100 questions. The concepts in here are not too easy, so you probably need to actually learn it using the book (or teachers lecture). However, the book itself does not help much. Basically, it's just a section with 5 concepts (more or less), and each one has one example. That is the only thing which teaches you. The rest is for you to figure out by doing examples.

If you're a very fast and comprehensive learner, it may be good for you, as it expects you to learn on the first try, and do examples to complete your learning. Otherwise, you will need to spend more time to understand the concepts, or pay good attention to the teacher/professor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - particularly for the interested learner
After reading other reviews on this book here on Amazon, I chose it for my independent study of precalc.I don't regret the choice.

I find it particularly well-suited for my learning preferences.Accordingly, this will be a text you will love if:

-you like learning systematically; that is, starting from simple concepts and rapidly building upon them
-you take the time to work many of the problems; the problems are expertly written and do wonders at isolating specific concepts and allowing your mind to be aware of them and master them.
-you enjoy solving problems of a mathematical and logical nature
-you have an interest in the subject that may be slightly broader than simply gaining mastery.

On the last item, the author does an excellent job of weaving tidbits of the miscellaneous and sundry of mathematics and using them to keep the mind interested while also teaching a lesson.Often these concepts are treated within an exercise. There is a good balance between including this extra information and sticking to the core subject. The extra information is never off-topic and keeps the material from becoming too dry while not being annoyingly inserted for the primary purpose of filling space.I am not a great fan of lengthy and marginally useful vignettes in textbooks.

If this is what you're looking for in a precalc textbook, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Text, all around
I learned pre-calculus from this textbook, and now I've been with a youth math program that uses the book for 3 years. This pre-calc book is excellent and is the first book that was of actual use to myself when learning new material.

The examples in the text are clear and helpful, which makes a world of difference with the material. The problems are also well-designed and there are several different types of problems in this book.

Although the price is high and the book is fairly heavy, it is worth it. If you are taking a pre-calc class and this is the required book, rejoice. If you are taking a pre-calc class and it is not and you have problems with pre-calc material, consider getting a 3rd edition of this book (3rd, not 4th, edition -- save on money).

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent text
While I have not taught from this book and have not gone through the entire text, from what I've seen this is an excellent text.
From the preface: "[E]xamples are consistently used to introduce, to explain and to motivate concepts...all of the initial exercise for each section are carefully correlated with the worked examples in that section." Based on my observations, this is true. Exercises following most sections are grouped into three categories: the first consist of these relatively routine problems closely correlated with the examples in the text of the section, and two more categories, each successively more difficult. There are many nice exercises that guide the student through a discovery process. The text is quite thorough and contains many topics not included in the bare-bones precalc text. For example, iteration of (the composition of) functions is presented in the section on composition. But the topic follows, with clear demarcation, that of basics of composition and hence can be omitted cleanly. Elegant results, some of which I had not been familiar with, such as Brahmagupta's theorem, are developed in some exercises. In the section on exponential growth and decay, the logistic growth model is developed in the exercises. But the text works fine even when omitting such challenge problems or those problems developing such optional topics.
While the book does have calculator applications exercises, I agree with the author's philosophy, that while "The graphing utility is and invaluable tool for learning mathematics... the mathematics curriculum should drive the technology, not the other way around."
I also use this book as a reference text.
Apparently the author, Prof. Cohen, was the director of the precalculus courses at UCLA. His experience shows in this book.
Update 5/4/2005: One reservation I have about the text is that the graphs are not always accurate. I feel strongly that graphs should always be presented as accurately as possible to reflect the true nature of the curves.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best math book I've seen--period.
This is THE math book for those preparing for the calculus or (like me) revisiting the subject. The book is clear, concise, and stands up well to heavy use.Additionally, the book has tons of examples; contains sectionsA & B for each chapter. The 'A' section is all that is necessary tocontinue to calculus, but 'B' will enhance learning if you choose to delvedeeper. The study guide that accompanies the book is absolutelyexcellent--an average student like me can go through the whole book withoutan instructor if aided by the study guide. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Manditory reading for college bound students
The writer seems to understand the areas where students would have conceptual difficulties. For example, he states after a proof, you may not be comfortable with that proof because we used vectors. Lets show this again using elementary algebra. This allows the student to assure themselves that the proof is correct, and begin to be exposed to proofs using more unfamiliar methods such as with vectors. Soon they will find that their comfort zone widens, and they have more methods available to prove statements.

I find that students are actually ready for the exercises at the end of each section after covering that section of material. In other math books it all too often occurs that the material is elementary and yet the questions are pitched at a much more advanced level. If students can NOT answer the questions at the end of a subsection, it is not well taught. This writer seems to want to actually prepare students, so that they are successful by the time they reach the questions. These questions also serve as a review of algebra and geometry.

To read this book with understanding, students must have taken geometry. If this has not been done I suggest the geometry course available at www.teach12.com as well as a reputable geometry book such as that by Harold R. Jacobs. For an algebra background I suggest the math courses through www.thinkwell.com. For this text, you will need a knowledge of vectors such as can be found in the thinkwell or other standard precal text.

There is usually an attempt to cover the material in this book in Precalculus texts. Typically about 100 pages is allowed in a high school Precalculus text. This book allows over 400 pages. This gives room for more depth of coverage, more examples, and a bit slower progression. I would recommend this text strongly to bright Precalculus students wanting more challenge, as well as to students that just don't seem to be getting the concepts from the abridged version found in the one year high school or college Precalculus texts.

There seems to be an unfortunate gap between the knowledge necessary to do well in college and what students have as the come in the door. If you look at the grade curve, most of our children are making C or WORSE in college mathematics and physics. Is it time we admitted that some of the concepts that we throw at children are given out without adequate practice?Analytic Geometry is an area where skill improves with practice, just as does throwing a baseball or playing a piece of music. If you are a student in a school system that firmly believes that students need no more math practice, consider independent study of this text over a summer term prior to calculus.

4-0 out of 5 stars Go, get it!
This is the third one in the `Master Math' series. Like the earlier ones, this too follows the same style. Simple, but effective. As I told in the review for the first two books, I was looking for a book to brush up my math after 22 years. I am repeating the same stuff, just keep one thing in mind; this is neither a text book nor a replacement for it. Written in a very simple and clear language and it is not just a collection of formulas and definitions. If you are starting after a long break, it is better you follow the reading order, go through the first and second books first. I agree with one of the reviewer with respect to the value of `Pi'; it is written clearly as "The value of Pi is 22/7 or approximately 3.141592654" but when we divide 22 by 7, what we get is 3.14285714 `. About the confusion regarding the relationship of pi, circumference and diameter, the book clearly says that "More specifically, Pi is equivalent to the circumference divided by the diameter of a circle".This book won't disappoint you. If all you want is to brush up or learn the basics or a fast reference, this is the book for you. If you are serious about the subject, add one more book and don't minus this.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some facts are just wrong.
This is a decent book if you want to review this material. However, when I read a math book and there are basic facts that are just plain wrong I get worried. In chapter 1, page 23, the author begins to discuss Pi. In just two bullet points the author makes several incorrect or incomplete statements.

1) "Pi defines the ratio between the circumference and the diameter of a circle." CORRECT, the author should have stopped here.

2) "More specifically, Pi is the equivalent to the circumference divided by the radius of a circle." WRONG. The formula for circumference is: Circumference = Pi * Diameter. Therefore Pi = Circumference / Diameter.

NOTE: Another reviewer has stated that the above statement is wrong. I stand by my statement. Either he has a different version of the book or he read it wrong. The version that I have was published in 1996 and the full paragraph says the following:
"Pi, or (symbol for Pi here), defines the ratio between the circumference and the diameter of a circle. More specifically, Pi is equivalent to the circumference divided by the radius of a circle."
The author starts off correctly but makes the error in the second sentence which is the statement I originally quoted.

3) "The value of Pi is 22/7 or approximately 3.141592654."Absolutely WRONG and Partially WRONG. You can NOT say that Pi IS 22/7. This is so commonly used. In fact, I learned the same thing in grade school. However, if we divide 22 by 7 it is not equal to Pi by the third decimal place. 22/7 = 3.142...and Pi = 3.141...which leads me to the partially wrong portion of the statement. Whenever giving an approximate value of Pi it should be followed by ...

So, while the book can be a good review, be careful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book. Lots of good trig.
This book is pretty small but it gives great explanations of geometric shapes, angles, and trig functions like tan, sin, cos, and others. It's straight to the point and I learned from it very quickly. I highly suggestgetting this book before moving on to a more advanced, or even just aregular geometry or trig book. ... Read more
