Product Description
Written by recognized leaders in the calculator reform movement who are experts on how to teach using the graphing calculator, this text expresses the authors' belief that success in mathematics and related fields depends on a solid understanding of functions. They use the graphing calculator to present mathematical concepts, to illustrate the use of functions in mathematics, and to explore the use of functions in applied and theoretical problem situations. Students use graphing calculators in learning nearly every new topic or concept. This allows them to explore a wider class of applied and theoretical problems than is possible with conventional pencil-and-paper methods. Key strokes for the TI-81 and TI-82 are demonstrated in the text so that students master manipulation of technology tools as they develop deeper conceptual understanding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Math porn of the highest degree
This book is a great read for people who don't like to blindly accept math as it is usually given by hurried teachers, anxious to move on to the next concept. The author takes care to strip it down and explain the concepts in depth, and I appreciate the hell out of it. Throughout high school, I was given the conclusions of Pythagoras, and none of the meat; the connections without the dots.

Thankfully, this book fills in all the back story. I love that sort of thing. This book has been a very enjoyable read for me. It might not be that great for someone wanting to just pick up enough math to get through a semester of high school and dump it all, but it might be just the thing for people interested in fully grasping the foundational maths. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worst math book I've had
I absolutely hate this book.I have never in my life worked with such a terrible math book.Normally, you can go through a math book and look at examples and eventually figure out how to do something you were having a hard time understanding, but THIS book doesn't explain ANYTHING.
The examples are horrendous, and the author constantly throws in little changes to problems without giving any explanation as to how you cope with these changes. The examples tend to skip entire explanations so you are left with a problem that lacks very important parts that would help you understand why they did what they did.
I am so frusterated with this book, and have absolutely no clue why ANY instructor would use it.If you're looking for thoughtful and thorough explanations for anything having to do with trigonometry, this is certainly not the book for you.F-.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's ok.
The book is okay, not really great or bad. Just that it contains too many practice problems that do not derive from concrete examples because either the examples aren't plentiful enough or there is none of them. I hate those warm-up questions because there is usually no background information first. I especially liked the inclusion of harmonic analysis where I could learn how to construct equations from graphs, and intuitively it's either a sum or a product of two sinusoids. Problem? When I got to the practice problems, the author threw a curveball and I was totally lost from there. This isn't the only example since it happens specifically all over the book. I love how the author did in section 9-1. I am introduced to probability, and he gives one measly picture of pair of rolled dice. Then he points out one simple example. Then I am quickly instructed to do the problems. How about more examples? Maybe 3...or 4...? That's nothing new also. To be honest with you, I have a degree in mathematics, but this book, I consider it to be too challenging for high school students especially when the title of the book deals with "Pre-Calculus." There are better books that is deemed user-friendly although Foerster's looks like one, but when in practice, is not. Avoid this book, and hopefully Foerster improves this book before he throws in a newer edition of the book to satisfy his and his fellow authors' greed. Lastly, make sure that math is fun, not a chore. *winks* *winks* ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Non-comprehensive
A little background on my situation. I need to pass (preferably with an "A")college trigonometry in order to obtain my degree. Math has always been my weak area. I had attempted to take it about a year and a half ago, and it didn't end well. I ended up dropping the class.
Since then, I have decided to barge into the mathematics world once again in order to properly defeat trigonometry. My plan was to get a comprehensive book on trig and learn everything during the summer; then, I won't feel so behind and lost in class. I choose this book due to the great reviews.
I'm on page 50. It's not what I expected at all. It goes into great detail on the easy topics and hardly does anything on the difficult ones. It doesn't show all the steps to solving the math. It doesn't explain how to use your calculator along with the equations (i.e. When do you press cos, sin, tan, cot, etc. in the equations?).
This book reminds me of borrowing notes from someone that is doing really well in class. It doesn't really teach you what's going on, but if you know what's going on, it could come in handy. I think perhaps when I am getting assignments, and I want to better understand it, this book will be useful. However, it's not capable of TEACHING. It's more like a handy reminder for people who already know. The description for it, I feel, was inaccurate. I think I'm going to invest in Dummies. Sigh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book !
Received the book in quick order which is usually the case from Amazon and was impressed with the first look at the book.Have not had a great amount of time to get into it yet but the first impression on leafing through the pages is that it appears to be laid out well and am looking forward to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent trig book
I bought this book and Trignometry for Dummies to help me prepare for my first trig exam in college. My professor is good, but his explanations aren't always clear and I really needed something to bridge the gap. This book does an excellent job of explaining not only HOW to do things, but WHY.It's even better than the textbook I was required to buy for the class. As for the other book, Trig for Dummies, it's just doesn't hold a candle to this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Trigonometry Presentation!
This is the best book out there on learning trigonometry. I especially appreciate the visually oriented focus. Each concept is described in all its forms, such as sine.Do you know each of the different ways sine can be described? Like the other Master Math books by Ross, the topics flow logically and are in context with what precedes and follows. It is thorough yet concise, and packed full of everything you, as tutor, or your kids need to know. The real world and fun applications are wonderful! The information is explained clearly and in a way that makes sense, so that a given concept is explained in such a way you understand what is being discussed rather than just memorizing formulas. What a breath of fresh air after the often-confusing text books I was and my children are given in school. I really feel I understand trigonometry after reading this book! If I were going back to school, and taking math or science, this book would be in my backpack. Also recommend: Master Math: Geometry. Master Math: Algebra. Master Math: Basic Math and Pre-Algebra. Also loved her novel: ARROWS THROUGH TIME: A Time Travel Tale of Adventure, Courage, and Faith

5-0 out of 5 stars For those who've had the math before, but want to brush up
Students, teachers and parents alike will appreciate the application-oriented focus of this book, which reviews basic geometry and trigonometric functions and pairs explanations of these basics with practical applications. This adds new life and depth to the process of review for those who've had the math before, but want to brush up. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Precalculus text disorganized and lacking in rigour
My son is using this textbook at school in a 10th grade pre-calculus course. As a microwave antenna engineer I take a strong interest in my son's science and maths education, and try to help with supplementary material where I think it is needed. When I read the first sentence in the book, which states that "a real number is any number that can be written as a decimal", my heart sank. The language usage is as poor as the accuracy of the statement, and it did not bode well for what the rest of the book may offer. It then proceeds to explain that the set of real numbers contains several important subsets, and calls out the natural numbers, whole numbers and the integers out in 3 clearly separated paragraphs. But this is followed by a discussion on the use of brackets, before the rational numbers and later, the irrational numbers are described - you have to read the text carefully before it is clear that these are two more subsets of the real numbers.Clearly marked paragraphs for these subsets would have worked better.

While skimming though the rest of the textbook, my initial misgivings were confirmed by the general lack of rigour, and the over-emphasis on terms, formulas and nomenclature without consistently explaining and/or proving how these are derived.A good example of this is the formulas given in Chapter 3, pp. 334-341 for annuities and mortgages without any proof or explanation. These are presented as examples of exponential functions, but in doing so the mathematics is reduced to a subject more akin to the learning of facts rather than learning the art of deduction. It would have been better to present the section on finance after the section on geometric series, since you need that to explain the formulas.Indeed, the book admits to this "loose end" in Chapter 9, where it belatedly derives one of these formulas, i.e. the future value of an annuity, p. 743.

The text is well illustrated, with attractive and colourful tables, graphs and pictures. But the content should be better organized with more attention to rigour, thus I would not recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars precalc-demana etal
The topics in this text have enough breadth to cover
Functions (algebraic, transcendentals, etc) and their Graphs.

One typical feature that is extremely disturbing is the fact that the authors decided to throw in mathematical terms without
defining them first. For instance, as early as Chapter 1.2,
the term "lim f(x) as x approaches ***" is introduced so that
the graphical concept "continuity" can be taught.
There is much more to
limits than just "plotting the graph, seeing where the curve goes". The purpose of PreCalc as suggested by its name is to prepare the students to take Calculus. And if we do not want to
cover some concepts correctly (algebraically and graphically - the motto of this text!)but only to do it in a touchy-feely sense, then please do NOT cover it in PreCalc. Do it in Calculus!

The only reason I ever used this is because someone else chose it for our multiple sections course! ... Read more
