Product Description
This all new edition of Trigonometry, derived from the author’s popular Algebra & Trigonometry, Third Edition, helps students visualize mathematics for better comprehension. By creating algebraic visual side-by-sides to solve various problems in the examples, the authors show students the relationship of the algebraic solution with the visual, often graphical, solution. In addition, a variety of new tools help students better use the book for maximum effectiveness to not only pass the course, but truly understand the material. ... Read more

Product Description

The Barnett Graphs & Models series in college algebra and precalculus maximizes student comprehension by emphasizing computational skills, real-world data analysis and modeling, and problem solving rather than mathematical theory. Many examples feature side-by-side algebraic and graphical solutions, and each is followed by a matched problem for the student to work. This active involvement in the learning process helps students develop a more thorough understanding of concepts and processes.

A hallmark of the Barnett series, the function concept serves as a unifying theme.A major objective of this book is to develop a library of elementary functions, including their important properties and uses.Employing this library as a basic working tool, students will be able to proceed through this course with greater confidence and understanding as they first learn to recognize the graph of a function and then learn to analyze the graph and use it to solve the problem.Applications included throughout the text give the student substantial experience in solving and modeling real world problems in an effort to convince even the most skeptical student that mathematics is really useful. ... The classic in the series of highly respected Swokowski/Cole mathematics texts retains the elements that have made it so popular with instructors and students alike: its exposition is clear, the time-tested exercise sets feature a variety of applications, its uncluttered layout is appealing, and the difficulty level of problems is appropriate and consistent. The goal of this text is to prepare students for further courses in mathematics.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid at all cost!

The text only introduces the basics of a concept before introducing much more complicated problems in the chapter practices. Very little detailed information to help understand concepts. I had to use other texts and online resources to supplement this POS testbook.

1-0 out of 5 stars A really bad math book
Precalculus is hard enough without having to use a book like this. I thought that the prose was unreadable, the graphics confusing, and many of the exercises supercomplicated (our professor thought so too). In my opinion *Algebra and Trignometry* is a triumph of marketing over pedagogical competence. My advice? Not only should you not buy this book; you should avoid a class in which it is assigned.

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful!
I teach a high school class for advanced mathematics in preparation for college maths, and I honestly have to say that this is the worst book from which to teach.Yes, I can understand it perfectly, but a student will be lost the moment he or she lays eyes on the first page. The only good thing about this book is the number of exercises it has in each section.

1-0 out of 5 stars For mathematicians, by mathmematicians
Frankly, I found this text way too brief in its coverage of topics prior to being bombarded with questions. There isn't much good to say about this book other than providing lots of problems to work. Save yourself the money and buy a "10000 problem" text instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid math textbook
I'm a little torn on what to say about this book. On one hand, I have a huge amount of respect for this book. On the other hand, it's not an easy book to learn from.

I have no doubt that if people work through this book, they will be very knowledgable and skilled in the areas covered. It is, however, a slow, tedious, sometimes frustrating process. The authors are clearly proficient at math, but their style is pretty dry. It's a "just the facts, ma'am" approach to instruction. It would be nice to have perspective, interpretation, and helpful guidance in addition to straight math. It's kind of like reading a technical manual.I prefer a more engaging presentation. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent merchandise
Book was in like new condition.
Very little cover wear.
Pages crisp and unmarked.
Excellent product, excellent buy.
Will trust this book vendor's description of book condition again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Manditory reading for college bound students
The writer seems to understand the areas where students would have conceptual difficulties. For example, he states after a proof, you may not be comfortable with that proof because we used vectors. Lets show this again using elementary algebra. This allows the student to assure themselves that the proof is correct, and begin to be exposed to proofs using more unfamiliar methods such as with vectors. Soon they will find that their comfort zone widens, and they have more methods available to prove statements.

I find that students are actually ready for the exercises at the end of each section after covering that section of material. In other math books it all too often occurs that the material is elementary and yet the questions are pitched at a much more advanced level. If students can NOT answer the questions at the end of a subsection, it is not well taught. This writer seems to want to actually prepare students, so that they are successful by the time they reach the questions. These questions also serve as a review of algebra and geometry.

To read this book with understanding, students must have taken geometry. If this has not been done I suggest the geometry course available at www.teach12.com as well as a reputable geometry book such as that by Harold R. Jacobs. For an algebra background I suggest the math courses through www.thinkwell.com. For this text, you will need a knowledge of vectors such as can be found in the thinkwell or other standard precal text.

There is usually an attempt to cover the material in this book in Precalculus texts. Typically about 100 pages is allowed in a high school Precalculus text. This book allows over 400 pages. This gives room for more depth of coverage, more examples, and a bit slower progression. I would recommend this text strongly to bright Precalculus students wanting more challenge, as well as to students that just don't seem to be getting the concepts from the abridged version found in the one year high school or college Precalculus texts.

There seems to be an unfortunate gap between the knowledge necessary to do well in college and what students have as the come in the door. If you look at the grade curve, most of our children are making C or WORSE in college mathematics and physics. Is it time we admitted that some of the concepts that we throw at children are given out without adequate practice?Analytic Geometry is an area where skill improves with practice, just as does throwing a baseball or playing a piece of music. If you are a student in a school system that firmly believes that students need no more math practice, consider independent study of this text over a summer term prior to calculus.

3-0 out of 5 stars item was in a great condition but delivery time took more than what i had paid for.
i'm mostly disappointed with the time of delivery, i had paid for a two day shipment, it turned out to be almost a week and i had paid extra for that. other than that, everything else was great.

5-0 out of 5 stars Precalculus: Functions and Graphs
The book shipped fast and there was not a long waiting period after I ordered it. The book is in good condition and there is no writing or highlighting in it.

1-0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE BOOK!
If you have to buy this for a college class, then your are stuck. But if you learning precalculus on your own, stay away from this book! First, the book lacks clarity. You are left wondering what's going on. Secondly, no thoroughness. It supposedly 'teaches' a section then you are off to the next. Lastly, it dives into 'heavy' and sometimes irrelevant material, making the student feel lost. Not sure what's going on with this book? I got all As in Math -- This book is terrible!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
This book made learning Precalculus so easy. Everything the author said was perfectly clear. The examples allowed me to literally ace every test I had, and this was for College Pre-Cal! I recommend this to everyone who needs to take a PreCalculus class

4-0 out of 5 stars Hard, but good
I use this book for my tenth grade algerbra 2 honours class. It has very good examples and is very thourough with the information. However, we never go beyond halfway through the practice problems because after the first ten or so sets, the problems are so challenging and difficult, it becomes a time waster to spend all our time going over such hard equations. This book presents the mathematical tools the reader needs for work in the physical sciences. The point of view is that of the working scientist, not the mathematician, and there are no elaborate proofs or qualifications. The math is utilitarian, clear, and simply presented. Derivations and sample problems are worked out in full detail, explanations are straightforward and intuitive, and understandability is never sacrificed for formal rigor. The author begins with the elements of analytic geometry and proceeds step by step to differential and integral calculus. Included are many applications in the physical sciences. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent supplement.
I used to check this out of the library. I kept renewing and finally just bought it. Same with the Beginning Calculus from Schaum. Since they review the subject matter, you still need a text book.
It works great for test review.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for studying calculus
I was recommended to buy this book by a math tutor from my college. He said many students who used this book properly aced emams, so I bought it a couple of months ago. I found it was a wonderful supplemental book for studying calculus. There are plenty of examples for you to work on, covering materials from the fundamentals of calculus to more advanced, intro to vector calculus. It is of great importance to practice in order to master the subject of calculus. Therefore, if you are looking for any supplemental exercises to play with, just go for it, Schaum's Outline of Calculus!

4-0 out of 5 stars Schaum's Outlines are always helpful
I am currently a 2nd year graduate student, studying mathematics. With all the new topics and subjects I am learning, I have found that there is a Schaum's Outline for every subject.I purchase as many of them as I can find, and they have always helped me.I love the large sections of practice problems, as well.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginner's Calculus
This book is great for when you're beginning Calculus, but it doesn't give intense hard problems for it. Great study guide to review the basics but isn't the hardcore stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth the investment
I bought this book to supplement my class textbook when I was having trouble in Calculus I. I chose this book over the many other supplements available because I knew I could carry forward into Calculus II and Multivariable Calculus.
As mentioned in many other reviews, this book provides plenty of practice problems, so if you're having an issue in one particular area in class or in the class's textbook, this is a good place to go to really thoroughly understand it. They provide a decent number of examples and solutions. Within each chapter are explanations of the lesson, followed by example problems with step-by-step solutions, and finally "Supplementary Problems" for you to solve on your own (though there are no answers in the back for you to check your work). It's also got some really good lists of trig formulas, geometric formulas, common integrals, and common derivitives.
The only thing I dislike about the book is that the explanations are rather poor compared to a textbook, but it's hardly surprising seeing as how this is an outline and that it covers topics from the beginning of Calc I all the way through differential equations of first and second order in under 600 pages.
I would totally recommend this book for the student looking to supplement a confusing textbook, or looking to brush up on concepts that have gotten a little rusty. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Terrific as an overview, review, or supplement...
I studied and learned most of this stuff years ago, and then proceeded to forget much of it as the years passed. But as a software developer, I have occasionally needed to refresh my understanding of some neglected area of mathematics... and this book has been invaluable for that.It might also be helpful as a supplementary text for students learning some area of math for the first time, since the explanations are often much more helpful and straightforward than anything I remember from my textbooks.

The explanations are clear and concise, with useful diagrams, examples, and problems (with fully-worked-out solutions in the back) to help test and verify your understanding. The authors don't waste a lot of time, but still manage to keep the topic interesting by appropriate use of real-world examples and clear explanations.A very good book...

3-0 out of 5 stars Expand your understanding of numbers and nature
I don't imagine that "Mastering Technical Mathematics" will wind up on the top of anyone's book list. But if you have an interest in math the book can expand your understanding of numbers from counting through geometry and trig on to the calculus. If you're looking for a book to get you through next weeks' test on logarithms I'd stick with a Schaum's Outline but if you really want to know what a logarithm is andhow they are derived, how they are applied, and how they can make your life easier, well, all of that is found here.

It's not all easy going. Like all math, each part is built on an understanding of the previous part (precisely why I failed intermediate algebra!) Some of the concepts can be hard to understand, too. But as you work though each chapter and, especially if you work through the problems, you'll gain a deeper understanding of numbers and how they relate to nature.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great self teaching math book
This book enabled me to teach myself algebra, trig and calculus at home. It takes you at the start, from counting with an abacus all the way through to integral calculus and beyond. The best math book I've seen.
