Product Description
Liberal Arts mathematics books often cover much more material than can be addressed in a one-semester course. Karl Smith has created a solution to this problem with his new book: THE NATURE OF PROBLEM SOLVING IN ALGEBRA. Loyal customers of Karl Smith's books laud his clear writing, coverage of historical topics, selection of topics, and emphasis on problem solving. Based on the successful NATURE OF MATHEMATICS text, this new book is designed to give you only the chapters and information you need, when you need it. Smith takes great care to provide insight into precisely what mathematics is--the nature of mathematics--what it can accomplish, and how it is pursued as a human enterprise. At the same time, Smith emphasizes Polya's problem-solving method throughout the text so students can take from the course an ability to estimate, calculate, and solve problems outside the classroom. Moreover, Smith's writing style gives students the confidence and ability to function mathematically in their everyday lives. This new text emphasizes problem solving and estimation, which, along with numerous in-text study aids, encourage students to understand the concepts as well as mastering techniques. ... Read more

This book was nearly half the price at my university, it was in GREAT condition, as much as i hate my math class this book has helped me so much.

3-0 out of 5 stars excellent quality--slow delivery
The product was perfect. The price was comparable.the only thing that needs to be improved is shipping time.It took at least 10 days from ordering until shipping. When waiting for a college textbook--that's a long time.We had to go and buy another one from the college book store and then hurry up and return it.Books ordered from e-bay on the same day arrived at least 7-10 days earlier. ... Product Description
Precalculus presents the course as it was intended to be taught, providing students with an integrated review of algebra and trigonometry while focusing on essential calculus concepts. Faires and DeFranza wrote this book because they believe students too often leave a precalculus class unprepared to go on to calculus. Although students who complete a precalculus course generally have had plenty of algebra and trigonometry review, they often lack the grounding in analysis and graphing necessary to make the transition to calculus. Faires and DeFranza's PRECALCULUS concentrates on teaching the essentials of what a student needs to fulfill their precalculus requirement and to fully prepare them to succeed in calculus. This streamlined text provides all the mathematics that students need--it doesn't bog them down in review, or overwhelm them with too much, too soon. And the authors have been careful to keep this book, unlike many of the precalculus books on the market, at a length that can be covered in one term. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Sucky Service
I expected and PAID to have this book by 8.20.10and one week later (today being 8.27.10) the book is still labeled as "shipping soon" I paid expidited shipping and the book has yet to arrive, nor do i have any information about it.I need this book to get homework done, and it still hasnt arrived. !!!DO NOT ORDER FROM THIS PERSON!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple and to the Point
I really liked this book and I am hanging onto my copy as I advance into Calculus. This book doesn't waste time with alot of extra nonsense jargon and gets right to the point with formulas, etc. I think it is imperative to get the student solutions manual with it for further explanation of some problems if needed.

3-0 out of 5 stars If it wasn't mandatory to buy I wouldn't ...
I have an A in this class right now, with a 4.0 cumulative GPA.That being said, this book is horrible. It and the solutions manual aren't very helpful. I guess I am just supposed to know this stuff already. There is a lot more researching and questions being ask than normal, just to understand the steps they are taking in the book that is supposed to be assisting you while you are learning

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor solutions
This relies on the assumed fact that you know all the algebra in the problems. It is very poor in step by step instruction.

5-0 out of 5 stars All the information needed in a compact size!

Product Description

Differential Equations on Fractals opens the door to understanding the recently developed area of analysis on fractals, focusing on the construction of a Laplacian on the Sierpinski gasket and related fractals. Written in a lively and informal style, with lots of intriguing exercises on all levels of difficulty, the book is accessible to advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and mathematicians who seek an understanding of analysis on fractals. Robert Strichartz takes the reader to the frontiers of research, starting with carefully motivated examples and constructions.

One of the great accomplishments of geometric analysis in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was the development of the theory of Laplacians on smooth manifolds. But what happens when the underlying space is rough? Fractals provide models of rough spaces that nevertheless have a strong structure, specifically self-similarity. Exploiting this structure, researchers in probability theory in the 1980s were able to prove the existence of Brownian motion, and therefore of a Laplacian, on certain fractals. An explicit analytic construction was provided in 1989 by Jun Kigami. Differential Equations on Fractals explains Kigami's construction, shows why it is natural and important, and unfolds many of the interesting consequences that have recently been discovered.

This book can be used as a self-study guide for students interested in fractal analysis, or as a textbook for a special topics course.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference
I bought this book to gain a practical understanding of Fourier Transforms and how to implement them with real data. I already had a conceptual understanding of FTs but not a practical one to where I could use them. This book bridged that gap for me and it seems as though that was among the author's intentions were when he wrote it. I would recommend this book and its companion to anyone in the same position.

1-0 out of 5 stars I was sorry I bought this book.
I needed to learn some basics about the DFT and FFT."Understanding the FFT" seemed to be loaded with computer programs.I found very little to help me learn the concepts."Who Is Fourier? A Mathematical Adventure" by the Transnational College of Lex and "Introduction to Fourier Analysis" by Norman Morrison where the books that helped me the most.

5-0 out of 5 stars I've been looking for a book like this for 10 years
This book contains all the necessary info to obtain a working knowledge of DFT and FFT. It contains many GWBASIC example programs so the reader can get a good grasp of what the algorithms are supposed to do. "C" progammers would have no difficulty rewitting these algorithms in "C".
Notes:
(1) most GWBASIC programs run without modification under QBASIC.
(2) the ones that don't run under QBASIC contain graphics statements and are easily fixed using QBASIC help.
(3) if you hate to enter source code, the software is available on diskette from the publisher for a small fee ...(includes GWBASIC and QBASIC examples)
(4) I've discovered "BASIC programmer" web sites where both GWBASIC and QBASIC are available for free download. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
It is a very good book. However I didn't even use mine, sent this one back to amazon and the only gave me half of what I paid for it because I opened the packaging. A little harsh I think.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Learning DE
Though some of the reviews mention the examples in the book are hard to follow, I found the examples made learning DE really simple if your classes/profs follow the book closely. Perhaps it is just personal learning/study styles, but since I fall asleep in class often, I rely heavily on the examples in the book and learn by myself a few days before the exams.

I can't disagree that the book does skip steps in the example from time to time (but maybe it is because those are considered trivial calculus knowledge? and DE is normally taken after finishing calculus). One thing I really like about the book is that once it gives a concept/theorem it is followed by an example that demonstrates how to solve a problem of that type.

As for the problems given at the end of section, I never really sat down and went over each problem, so I am not too familiar in reviewing how the problems are. For the problems I did go over, they are fairly straight forward.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad book
I bought the book for my differential equations class. It seems that I bought an earlier edition since one of the chapters is missing. That's my fault not the seller's though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good instruction on differential equations
I used this book for an "online course" where we never met the instructor.Fortunately the book makes it easy to learn the material without having an expert by your side to guide you.

1-0 out of 5 stars worthless
In calc I and II i relied on the solutions manual to help get through homework, which were very helpful. This book, however, does nothing of the sort. It only shows answers to randomly-numbered problems (i.e. #3,6,9,12,15,16,20) some problems just show the answer without any work toward the solution.

Absolutely worthless ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I now regret taking the class because of this book.
This book only gives answers to 'selected' odd-numbered problems making it hard to check your work and make sure you know what you are doing. The solutions manual only works out about every third problem. Even then, they are not worked out well. Once again making it hard to check your work. I really regret buying this now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not the best book to learn from
This book really sucks, it may be concise and clear but it hardly shows examples. Most of the examples are cut off and instead of showing you how they derive the solution they just give it to you written in words.NOT THE BEST BOOK TO LEARN FROM

5-0 out of 5 stars Cost effective!
The book for my Diffeq class was $150 in the school store. This is the exact same thing (with a different font and colors) for about $145 less. Every college student should know how to book-hunt like this. Came in great condition and has everything I need for class.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive with respect to size
I just wanted to mention that the ninth edition of this book has only about 400 pages (if you count the index, appendices as well) and that Amazon should update the information of this "new" edition. This fact makes the price of $140 (and it is usually cheaper on Amazon.com than elsewhere) even more insolent.

3-0 out of 5 stars It either helps or it doesn't
When you look at the solutions, the explanations/processes are very limited. Its like having a math teacher who starts to perform steps inhis or her head and then you're left there trying to figure out what the teacher did. Some of the odds are not even that: sometimes, it would only give you a hint.

Most of the odd problems are worked out-as described above; however, sometimes it selectively omits odd problems. Sometimes- this was really annoying- it left out the one problem that was worked different from all the others. Once in a while, it did have an even problem worked out.

At the beginning of each section there is a study guide with formulas and overall suggestions for working problems in that section. I never really used this part of the solutions manual.

If I had the option to buy this book again, I wouldn't pay what I did pay for it.I paid 27 dollars, with shipping.I think its worth at most maybe 10 dollars, and that's being very generous. If you do decide to buy it, buy it with some friends who are also in your class so you can lessen the cost.
