From the author: Enactment and enforcement of school nutrition policies represent key components in adolescent overweight and obesity prevention. This study determined: 1) California school board members' attitudes, perceptions, and motivations related to enactment of policies that support healthy eating in schools; and 2) barriers to adopting school policies that support healthy eating. To understand board members' decision-making process, key informant interviews were conducted and a survey was administered to 404 school board members. Though school board members care about the well-being of pupils, competing priorities limit the extent to which nutrition issues get addressed at board meetings. Members' decisions center primarily around academic achievement issues, yet they are interested in nutrition's overall impact on children's health and academic achievement. Excellent book about the inception of ESL as a right in America
Lau V. Nichols was the case that granted rights to students whose first language is not English. This case was brought by the San Francisco parents of several Cantonese speaking children. Their contention was that because their children were not getting help with their English they could not effectively participate in the educational process. In some ways this case mirrors Brown V. Board of Education. In Brown the fight was over equal access and equal treatment. In Lau the judges finally ruled that equal treatment did not facilitate equal access and participation in the educational system. Today fedral law mandates that public school students who do not possess adequate English language skills receive ESL, English as a second language classes or ELL English language learning. This is an excellent book about a not so well know case. I highly recommend this Landmark Supreme Court Cases series. ... Read more
