Product Description
Canada-United States relations covers more than two centuries, marked by a shared British colonial heritage, conflict during the early years of the U.S., and the eventual development of one of the most successful international relationships in the modern world. The most serious breach in the relationship was the War of 1812, which saw both sides try to invade the other, and both failed, leaving the status quo. Friendship was solidified in the 20th century with the shared experience of the world wars and a close alliance during the Cold War.Canada and the United States are currently the world's largest trading partners, share the world's longest border, and have significant interoperability within the defense sphere. Modern difficulties have included repeated trade disputes (despite a continental trade agreement), environmental concerns, and debates over immigration and the movement of people across the shared border. While the foreign policies of the neighbors have been largely aligned for much of the post-war era, significant disputes have arisen, including over the Vietnam War, the status of Cuba, the Iraq War and the War on Terror. At this time, the Canadian dollar has gained considerably versus the U.S. dollar with as yet unknown consequences. ... Product Description
Between 1968 and 1971, Quebec almost succeeded in becoming the sole representative of French Canadians within la Francophonie - the international community of French-speaking states. Robin Gendron examines relations between Canada and French Africa from 1945 to 1968 within the context of Canada's deteriorating relations with France and Quebec's aggressive pursuit of its own international interests in the 1960s. Using extensive archival research, Gendron rebuts the argument of Quebec nationalists and scholars that the Canadian government's neglect of French Africa forced Quebec to develop its own international identity. "Towards a Francophone Community" shows that there had been active federal interest in French African affairs since the late 1940s, within the context of developments in NATO and the Cold War, the vagaries of Canada's relations with France, and the Quiet Revolution in Quebec. Gendron argues that the subordination of Canadian interests in French Africa to other foreign policy concerns during the 1950s and early 1960s ultimately weakened Canada's ability to prevent Quebec from participating in la Francophonie. ... Product Description
Canadians like to think that their country is law-abiding and honours its international commitments. Is Our House in Order? explores this public perception while considering whether or not it is correct in terms of domestic law. Examining a range of topics such as treaty implementation, federal-provincial relations, the environment, international humanitarian law, and the protection of confidential information, contributors disentangle the complex processes involved in implementing international law in Canadian law. They highlight how the federal negotiation and ratification process has been opened up to the public, what is being done to give effect to custom in domestic law, and offer suggestions for improving the harmonization of international law implemented at the federal and provincial level. Informative and clarifying, Is Our House in Order? provides well-reasoned prescriptions for improving Canada's implementation of international law and makes a case for thinking about international law as an integral part of Canadian law and society. ... Product Description
Two of the biggest issues facing nation states in the twenty-first century are the role of government in the management of national economies, and the cultivation of international trade and investment in an age of globalisation. In Government, International Trade, and Laissez-Faire Capitalism Carin Holroyd offers a comprehensive comparison of Australian, Canadian, and New Zealand policies and strategies aimed at improving economic relations with Japan, the world's second largest economy. She illustrates negative consequences that result when governments withdraw from trade promotion and leave the development of commercial opportunities to the private sector. Holroyd focuses on how Australia, Canada, and New Zealand responded to the dramatic changes in the Japanese economy that followed the 1985 Plaza Accord and currency reforms. She examines trade promotional activities, efforts to co-ordinate business responses to the Japanese market, and the cultivation of Japanese investment, indicating how new paradigms of state involvement in the economy influenced international trading activity.Holroyd demonstrates that rather than responding proactively to changing conditions and new opportunities, the national business sectors stayed with traditional patterns of trade and investment, losing significantly in market share and export opportunities as a consequence. ... Product Description
Do Canada and the United States share a special relationship, or is this just a face-saving myth, masking dependency and domination? The Politics of Linkage cuts through the rhetoric that clouds this debate by offering detailed accounts of four major bilateral disputes. It shows that the United States has not made coercive linkages between issues. In the early Cold War years, the exercise of American power over Canada was held in check by a genuinely special diplomatic culture but since then has been held back only by interest groups and institutions. This revisionist account of Canada-US relations is essential reading for anyone interested in Canadian politics, American foreign policy, or international diplomacy.

Brian Bow is an associate professor of political science at Dalhousie University and coeditor of An Independent Foreign Policy for Canada? Challenges and Choices for the Future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic insight on the homoerotic overtones of canadians
This book had me entranced for the better part of a week.Unlike other authors in the genre, Mike Phearson avoids taking a cynical veiw of homosexuality. He weaves a thread of humor into the serious topic of the prevelant homosexuality of canadians.

His book is as much a resource as it is a piece of literature. This book has proved invaluable in my research into the homosexual overtones of internet culture. The goatsesque narrative style of the book will take you down the rabbit hole into the dark, stained and dirty story of war in Canada.Don't forget your jimmy hat!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, only the spelling mistakes let it down
As a professional artist, I have a lot in common with Mike Pearson. I open gaps in the market and Mike fills them. This book is a good example of that and show just how easy it is to relate to Canada and it's population.

I whole heartedly recommend it, but there are several spelling misteaks (sic) in the book and I would have thought the publishers would proof read it before committing to print. ... Read more

Product Description
After more than ten years of effort by many states to control and redress conflicts in the Balkans, Africa, the Middle East, and elsewhere, Canadian political and military leaders are still struggling to adjust defence policies and to build armed forces relevant to the international security situation Canada faces today. But the unending demand of what on the surface seem to be disparate operations and the absence of any overarching description of strategic reality confounds these efforts. Policies drawn from theories appropriate to the cold war era and "classic" peacekeeping missions are out of step with the demands of the past ten years and the future and make it difficult to develop new ways of thinking about defence policy and force development to deal with the world we live in.In "Campaigns for International Stability", the authors see a new pattern emerging from ten years of experience and seemingly different operations."The post-cold war era" has been superceded by the stability campaign - a continuous diplomatic and military endeavour by states in various types of coalitions to halt conflicts, disarm belligerents, and police lawless regions around the world to bring "peace, order and good government" to international affairs. Armed force, and sometimes deadly force, is the central and necessary component of this campaign, but what type of force and what type of policies are appropriate to this new era?The authors address this question in a discussion of defence policy and management in Canada since 1989 and their relation to the needs of the stability campaign. They describe policy making in a Canadian context, political and other domestic factors that shape Canada's military capabilities, and the influence of the defence budgeting process on policy choices. Finally, the authors set out a new defence-policy framework for rebuilding and transforming both policy and the Canadian Armed Forces over the next ten years to meet the challenges of the stability campaign. ... Product Description
Last November America elected its first black president. Canada, too, went to the polls that month. The difference for the two nations was remarkable: Americans had a clear choice between an indecisive, has-been who represented at best more of the same and a progressive, eloquent, African American, the first ever black presidential candidate. As Ibbitson remarks, "What were Canadians being offered? An overweight economist who couldn't offer an honest smile to save his life, and a backpacking political scientist whose English made your ears bleed. Who elected these guys? Practically no one."

Ibbitson argues that the result of the US election was electric, energizing, and represents a profound changes in American politics. Barack Obama may well be just the man to rescue the republic from its many serious woes. The result of the Canadian election was, he says, as flaccid as the campaign itself: another Conservative minority government that shortly afterward tripped over its own hubris, causing a major political tempest in the Ottawa teapot. The elections and their aftermaths tell us two crucial things: One, America is still capable of slamming on the brakes and putting itself back on the right track. Two, in Canada, something has gone so seriously wrong with our leadership it's time to sound the alarm. Which is just what he does in this timely, perceptive, persuasive book. ... Read more

Tracing the history of environmental policy and politicsfrom the seminal moments of 1978 at Love Canal to currentenvironmental justice disputes, this in-depth study offers across-border analysis of the modern environmental movement that shouldbe of interest to students and practitioners, academics andactivists. Though no explicit environmental justice movement hasdeveloped in Canada, questions of fairness and equity in issues likethe recent Toronto garbage crisis are central to many of the country’senvironmental conflicts.
