Product Description
Based on revised articles by Yossi Katz and John C. Lehr, first published in a variety of prestigious academic journals, this book analyses the pattern and process of ethnic group settlement in western Canada from 1874 until the 1920s from the perspective of historical geography and in the context of time, space and society. Through consideration of six major ethnic groups, the Mennonites, Jews, Mormons, Ukrainians, Doukhobors and Hutterites, the book describes how and why these groups created a series of distinctive cultural landscapes across the prairies. At the centre of this explanation is an appreciation of the roles played by the immigrants, their societies, cultures, and institutions. The ways in which these interacted with the institutions of the host society and with the politics of the Canadian government determined many settlement outcomes. It was this interaction that created the complex cultural mosaic of the contemporary prairie landscape in Canada. ... Read more

Product Description
A comprehensive anthology of the best of the poetry, fiction, and drama by those writers who trace their ancestry to the Indian subcontinent. The writers included in these pages originate from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, as well as East and South Africa and the Caribbean. What they have in common besides their ancestry is that they reside in and create their works in Canada.

This anthology is a landmark in Canadian literature, being the first detailed compilation of the literature of the recent wave of South Asian immigrants to Canada. As such it should supplement the well-established but outdated anthologies of CanLit. ... Read more

Product Description
Photographer and writer Allan Sekula constructs narratives that define land and its political, social, and economic demarcations. He has described Geography Lesson: Canadian Notes as a conjectural comparison of imaginary and material geographies in the advanced capitalist world. In the book, which is based on a 1986 exhibition, he examines the iconography found in images of a landscape altered by mining, of bank architecture and its messages of cultural stability, and of the land as a source of economic wealth as it appears on Canadian money. The seventy-six photographs form a narrative sequence augmented by captions and by the text, which is written in the subjective voice of a single investigator and storyteller. The photographs link two sites: the Inco mine and smelter in Sudbury and the Bank of Canada in Ottawa. The deep roots of their existence--the creation and distribution of wealth--are far more intimately connected than appearances would suggest. Canadian bills bear images of industry that draw resources from the land, contributing to the myth of national independence and self-determination. Issues of national identity and independence acquire a heightened poignancy in light of Sekula's underlying subject, the relationship between Canada's resource-based economy and U.S. capital. In essays following Sekula's text, Gary Dufour discusses Canadian Notes as an examination of social and economic discourses that shape perceptions of the land, and John O'Brian discusses the dynamics of a resource-based economy, relations between Canada and the United States, and photography's ability to regulate appearances and therefore to control reality.Distributed for the Vancouver Art Gallery ... Where else can that well-known phrase be better applied than to astudy of the Finns in Sudbury?"Rock" defines the physical reality of the Sudbury setting:rugged hills, mines, farms and forests set in the Precambrian Shield."Hard" defines the human setting:Finnish immigrants having to contend with the problems andstresses of relocating to a new culture, with livelihoods thatrequired great endurance as well as a tolerance for hazardousconditions.

Since 1883 Finnish immigrants in Sudbury, men and women alike, have striven to improve their lot through the options availableto them.Despite great obstacles, the Finns never flagged in their unwavering fight for workers'rights and the union movement. And as agricultural settlers, labour reformers, builders of churches, halls, saunas and athletic fields,Finns left an indelible imprint on the physical and humanlandscape. In the process they have played an integral part in thetransformation of Sudbury from a small struggling rail town toits present role as regional capital of northwestern Ontario. ...
