3-0 out of 5 stars Weather and Climate
Weather and Climate by Time life is a great science book.Every page is filled with everything you need to know about our Earth and all of the natural things that go on. It explains things like how the atmosphere is divided, and what are the different layers. There are five layers in the atmosphere they are the Troposphere, the Stratosphere, the Mesosphere, the Thermosphere, and the Exosphere. Some more of the explanations are what causes tornadoes, and what causes turbulence. Tornadoes are caused by severe thunderstorms, and when a cold front runs into warm air. Turbulence is caused by differences of air temperature. Some more interesting questions answered are what causes lightning, what are cumulonimbus clouds, and what causes fog to form. Lightning is caused by clouds becoming electrically charged and when it reaches a certain level it releases lightning. Cumulonimbus clouds are known as thunderclouds, because they usually bring thunder and lightning. Fog is formed when moist warm air comes into contact with dry cold air. Other interesting topics are what is a rainbow, what are mountian halos, how are daily forecasts created, and what is the Greenhouse Effect. A rainbow is a combination of sunlight and moisture up into the air. Mountain Halos are circles of light at the top of a mountain that are caused by sun light going into fog. Daily forecasts are created by meteorologists finding out the current weather and then using satellites to predict the rest of the day's weather. Finally the Greenhouse Effect is the problem we're having with certain chemicals destroying our atmosphere.
I thought this was a good science book, but it was kind of boring. Some of the topics were interesting, but not enough to make me want to read more. I recommend this book to all ages that enjoy learning more about science and the natural wonders of our world. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Climate, particularly physical and surface climate, plays an important role in landscape pattern and diversity in Canada. Focusing on climatic processes at and near the earth's surface and on how these processes interact with the natural and human-modified landscapes, the text reveals the interrelationship between Canada's surface and its climate. In the opening chapters contributors lay out the large-scale context of the physical climate of Canada, introducing the processes, balances, and dynamic linkages between the surface and atmosphere that create and maintain the diversity of surface climates found in Canada as well as outlining the nature of the physical processes that operate near the ground's surface. Individual chapters are dedicated to snow and ice - the almost universal surface cover in Canada - and the other major natural surface environments of Canada: ocean and coastal zones, fresh water lakes, wetlands, arctic islands, low arctic and subarctic lands, forests, and alpine environments. The final part of the book considers those surface environments that have been strongly influenced by human activity, such as agricultural lands and urban environments, and examines the prospects for future climate change. ...
