Description:
We developed a deterministic and stochastic age-based matrix projection population model to assess and quantify the impact of mortality caused by chronic oil pollution and legal hunting on thick-billed murre Uria lomvia populations breeding and wintering in eastern Canada. We calculate the potential population growth rate in the absence of anthropogenic mortality sources using a modeling technique that translates absolute number of birds killed from anthropogenic mortality to potential survival rates in the absence of these anthropogenic impacts. The intrinsic growth rate of the deterministic matrix based on vital rates from Coats Island (@l"d=1.0102), as well as the stochastic growth rate (@l"s=1.0098, 95% C.I. 0.9969-1.0226), matched observed population trends. Hunting mortality reduced population growth rate by 0.020 (0.012-0.039), oiling mortality reduced population growth rate by 0.025 (0.012-0.039). Combined these sources reduced the population growth rate by 0.047 (0.033-0.610). Although thick-billed murre populations are stable or slowly growing in eastern Canada, anthropogenic sources of mortality are reducing the ability of the population to grow, and increase vulnerability in these populations to changes in their environment and other pulse perturbations. Our modeling technique could be used to assess specific anthropogenic impacts on populations where a vital rates and numbers killed are known, but no long-term trend information is available. ... From the author: Objective: To determine the lifetime prevalence of help seeking for alcohol problems among Canadian drinkers; to explore the influence on help seeking of age, gender, education, marital status and the number of life areas where alcohol was felt to have caused harm; and to consider any similarities and differences in the rate of help seeking in Canada and in the U.S. Method: Analyses of data from a survey of 12,155 Canadian adults (response rate 75.6%) conducted in 1994. Use of logistic regression to examine the influence on help seeking of demographic characteristics and perceptions of alcohol-related harm. Results: Two percent (2%) of lifetime drinkers reported seeking help at some time. Help from AA or from addictions agencies was reported by 1.3% and 0.3%, respectively. Logistic regression showed that help seeking was more common among those aged 40-49 years than those in other age groups, and less common among those with no post-secondary education and those who were married. The best predictor of help seeking was the number of life areas where alcohol was felt to have caused harm. Controlling for this variable, the influence of gender on help seeking was negligible. The rate of help seeking was similar to that in the U.S. 15 years earlier but lower than the U.S. rate in 1990. Conclusions: More effort may be required to encourage Canadians with alcohol problems to seek help. Gender does not appear to influence the chances of seeking some form of help when perceptions of harm are controlled. More research is needed to determine why proportionally fewer Canadian than American drinkers report seeking help for alcohol problems. (J. Stud. Alcohol 60: 867-872, 1999)

From the author: Twenty-eight hereditary disorders are known to cluster in at least one region of Quebec, 24 of them in regions east of Quebec City, including 20 in the northeastern part of the province. Genealogies were reconstructed to identify the probable origin of 21 of these 28 disorders present in the French Canadian population. The results showed that most of the disorders were brought to Nouvelle-France by settlers coming from France in the seventeenth century. Only 249 of the 8483 settlers in Nouvelle-France contributed, as common founders, to these genealogies. The contribution of the province of Perche was significantly higher than expected from its relative weight to the founding nucleus of the French Canadian population in 19 disorders. Furthermore, 34 of the 48 different common founders from Perche were found in more than one disorder.

Product Description
Canada was not prepared for the impact of the 1950s "Baby Boom" on its education system and labour market - despite the fact that these effects were entirely predictable. Will the country be better prepared to cope with demographic changes coming in the years ahead?

In this study, David Foot considers all the factors that affect the size and composition of Canada's and each province's population, and makes demographic projections up to the year 2051, with analysis of trends up to the year 2001.The projections - given for each province and for Canada as a whole - provide a wealth of information on future economic and social needs. ... Description:
This paper describes the portrayal of HIV/AIDS in 14 mass print newspapers directed towards the Canadian Aboriginal population and published between 1996 and 2000. Based on qualitative content analysis the research examines both manifest and latent meanings. Manifest results of this study indicate that women and youth are under represented as persons with HIV/AIDS. The latent results note the frequent references to Aboriginal culture, and the political and economic position of Aboriginal Canadians when discussing the disease, the person with the disease, the fear of the disease and the reaction of the community to the person with the disease. Unlike mainstream media where the medical frame is dominant, HIV/AIDS are here contextualized by culture, identity, spirituality and political-economic issues. ... Read more
