5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, highly informative!
This book is so helpful and worthwhile that I shared my copy with our family practice doctor who, in turn, passed it on to another of his prostate cancer patients.I just bought another copy for my husband and me.If you are dealing with this cancer, you need this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Myers' book is excellent
As a health acare professional and prostate cancer patient, I cannot recommend Dr. Myers book Beating Prostate Cancer highly enough. Dr. Myers makes the case for nutritional based therapy that combines detailed scientific knowledge buttressed with extensive research studies in clear language that is easily grasped by the lay person.The reader comes away a secure sense of confidence that Dr. Myers has thoroughly and scrupulously evaluated each therapy, accepting only those that meet the highest standards of proof. A detailed technical bibliography is part of each chapter for those who wish to review the actual studies.Dr. Myers book is a treasure for prostate cancer patients and should be on the shelf of every health professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Empowerment
Beating Prostate Cancer (Hormonal Therapy & Diet, 1)

"The Book Beating Prostate Cancer" by Dr. Charles Snuffy Myers" is a must read for all prostate cancer patients as well as though who wish to avoid the disease. My husband is fortunate enough to be a patient of Dr. Myers but for those who are not, this is a book of knowledge and personal empowerment. Dr. Myers is an internationally renowned oncologist and clinical researcher whose own battle with prostate cancer is a living testimony of his teachings and convictions. His writing is indicative of his bed side manner: gentle, warm, caring, uncomplicated and engaging.

An initial diagnosis of cancer or a recurrence is frightening enough for any patient and their loved ones. If the patient and their spouse or advocate are vigilant in seeking opinions and knowledge, they will confront complex testing procedures, confusing terminology, and will be prescribed only conventional treatment options. Our collective experience has been that physicians are often siloed by their discipline and their opinions are at time biased and "singular" in an approach to the disease. The radiologist, or surgeon or medical oncologist, although experts, do not provide a consolidated analysis or a multidisciplinary treatment approach. It is difficult for the patient to gain perspective and to conclude what the proper decision may be for their treatment.

Dr. Myers is a "treatment architect" and his representation of all the disciplines, in concert with disease stages and prognosis are clearly presented in an uncomplicated and concise manner. It is very similar to his in-person style and delivery.He simplifies the text for thelayman, while encouraging and empowering his patients to maintain a state of health and possible remission. Heteaches and advocates the "mediterranean diet" and makes recommendations to ingest vitamin supplements and antioxidants. He utilizes both conventional treatments in concert with alternative treatments, all which are predicated on on-going medical research. Succinctly, by choosing a healthy life style patients can keep the immune system strong and create a body chemistry that literally starves cancer cells.

This quick reading book should be kept bedside or close at hand to garner the day to day encouragement so often needed and for easy accessibily to guidance and knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review: Beating Prostate Cancer (Hormonal Therapy & Diet) by MD Charles "Snuffy" Myers
As an 8 year survivor I had the good fortune to be treated to one of Dr. Myers lectures at the time my initial radiation therapy failed.This lead to seeking his assistance on my case resulting in his supervising my triple blockade hormone therapy.

His new book is an excellent representation of his skill in the medical oncology field and highlights his ability to communicate in lay terms, the logic behind hormone therapy.He goes beyond "pills" and helps build a lifestyle of diet and exercise to make survival worthwhile.His advise is especially meaningful as he is also a survivor and fully appreciates what the patient is experiencing

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Valuable Reading for Living with My Prostate Cancer
Dr. Charles "Snuffy" Myers has once again made an enormous contribution to those of us living with prostate cancer.What I appreciate the most about this book is his very thorough descriptions of all aspects of hormone therapy.He understands and is able to communicate effectively that cancer is a systemic disease and provides speicific information about how life style and diet are just as critical as medical treatment.He carefully follows the research and studies related to prostate cancer, including the nutritional research, and digests this information for the lay reader.This book has been most helpful to me as I continue my fifteen year journey of understanding and living with my prostate cancer. ... Product Description
The stunning bestseller from Quebec, coming in English in May. Over 138,000 French-language copies sold!

Within this book is the perfect recipe for success: An author who is one of the world’s foremost experts in the groundbreaking area of how food chemistry can fight cancer. A highly accessible and practical text. A beautifully designed package accompanied by full-colour illustrations.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, an estimated 149,000 new cases of cancer occurred in Canada in 2005. While this statistic is alarming, current research is showing convincingly that elements in particular foods may significantly reduce the risk of cancer in healthy individuals and slow its progress in those already suffering from the disease. We can help ourselves and our families through healthy eating. But the information coming through the popular media is confusing and often hard to understand. Just what should we be eating and in what combinations? Do all cancer-fighting foods work the same way? Do they all fight all kinds of cancers?

In Foods That Fight Cancer, leading biochemist Richard Béliveau teams up with Denis Gingras to describe the science of food and which properties of particular foods are the active cancer-fighting elements. They deftly explain how different foods work to protect the body against different cancers and show which foods will be most effective. By understanding the science behind these therapeutic benefits, we come to realize not only why it is so critical to add these foods to our diet, but how easily it can be done. ... Read more

Wealth of information that can easily be read, cover to cover, in an hour or two.I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Things you should know
I read quite widely but this easy-to-read book has a large amount of information I had not come accross before.Its focus is to give you information that helps you to understand cancer so you can take steps to place yourself at lower risk for cancer.We all know about not smoking but there is lots more you can do.It is especially credible since its written by eminent cancer researchers who head up cancer research labs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who wants to enjoy good food and good health
A very easy to read but fascinating explanation of the biochemistry of cancer cells and how naturally occurring chemicals in certain foods can alter the chemical environment in the body to inhibit the various stages of cancer cell growth. Amazingly the action of these natural chemicals is doing what powerful man-made chemotherapy is doing, but without the collateral damage. By including some of the basic ingredients in your diet, you can signficantly help decrease the risk of cancerous cell growth in the body. The book provides some very thought provoking statistics on what are the real causes of cancer as opposed to many of the popular myths that people worry about so unnecessarily. It also makes these essential foods sound delicious and fun. No recipes but that's up to you!!! An essential read from the modern foodie!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read Book!
This is a life-altering book.Anyone interested in improving their health needs to read it!It's a little technical, but in an era of "quick fixes" and crazy fad-diets, I found it refreshing to read a book based on extensive research and empirical scientific data.Most encouraging is that the foods that have been shown to be so helpful to improving our ability to defend against cancer, are good too - berries, tomatoes, cabbage & citrus fruits to name a few.Read this book - your health and the health of our nation will improve as a result! ... Product Description
Renowned cancer specialist Ronald Citron, M.D. uses his medicalknowledge, as well as his wife Kathye's expertise as a chef, in this anti-cancer, anti-heartdisease diet book.Amazon.com Review
"Cholesterol" is one of the most confusing words inthe health world. Most people assume that because excess cholesterolin your blood is a bad thing, cholesterol in your diet must bedangerous, too. But, as Ronald Citron points out, the two things areunrelated. Excess cholesterol in your bloodstream comes from too muchsaturated fat in your diet. Eating high-cholesterol food such asshellfish and game meats is extremely healthy; they're generally lowin fat and, more important, are extremely low in saturated fat. That'sthe "evolutionary" part of Citron's plan: if you eat the wayour hunter-gatherer Cro-Magnon ancestors ate, you'll avoid healthproblems because you'll be eating the foods our bodies evolved toconsume. More than half of the book consists of recipes and menu plansfor putting Citron's theories into practice. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Hunter Gathers Ate No Grains, Cro-Magnons not our ancestors
My review title tells it.You're a great cook, but next time, PLEASE do your homework before writing a book.Grains were not part of our diet until 10K years ago.The next person who writes something about how ourancestors ate whole grains for the 2.6 million period of human historyshould have their laptop taken away from them!Stick to cooking!

5-0 out of 5 stars A philosophy that makes sense.Great recipes.
This book makes sense.The premise is that our bodies evolved to eat food that could be hunted and gathered.That means fruit, vegetables, nuts, some whole grains, and some meat.(If we could catch it, we could eat it.)The no-nonsense message is that a diet that includes a range of whole foods (we didn't evolve to eat Cheetos and Whoppers!) can taste great and keep you healthy.

The recipes are really tasty.Some are exotic.Some take only ten minutes.There's enough variety, spice, and substance to keep me satisfied.

I read The Zone and realized that it was fundamentally a low-calorie diet -- of course you'll lose weight, but I can't believe it's healthy.If you really follow it you don't eat enough!I tried McDougall's plan and found his recipes bland and tired after a while.I liked Ornish's recipes but found myself craving tuna salad sandwiches and eating way too much dairy.Citron's book is balanced and less restrictive than Ornish or McDougall,and it makes complete sense from a scientific standpoint.Thumbs up!

1-0 out of 5 stars Same Old Stuff
The promise of the book is that it is a novel approace to diet based on the diet of our Cro-Magnon ancestors.Unfortunately, the author ignores much of the evidence from the paleontological record and picks and chooses whateversupports the standard low-fat noncense (the author is in a panic about saturated fats).While I will give him credit for incorporating wild game and other "flesh foods" into his program, he also includes foods that Cro-Magnonpeople rarely, if ever, consumed (such as dairy products and grains).He also includes sugar in many of his recipes. For a really compelling understanding of food as it relates to evolutionary theory, I suggest reading Peter D'Amamo's book "Eat Right For Your Type".Also, the Paleolithic Diet Page on the web has great articles and information. ... If changing what you eat could keep you from getting cancer, wouldn't you do it?

Dr. Hatherill's Super Eight Food Groups are the foundation of a strategy that will help you create a cancer-busting regimen for yourself and your family. In this courageous book, Hatherill takes on the pharmaceutical and food industries to disclose dangers inherent in common foods like dairy and meat products, as well as over-the-counter supplements.

"In...humbler times people rarely got cancer...Heart disease was so rare that medical textbooks from the mid-to late 1800s failed to include it. Something has gone fundamentally wrong in present times, as heart disease and cancer have emerged as the two most vexing killers in affluent countries...This book can help you convert your diet into a defensive anticancer solution. Throughout these pages you will be given practical techniques for solving the health problems that arise from eating a Western diet. Eat to Beat Cancer has identified the most protective, beneficial foods from around the globe and placed them in one simple, straight-forward diet." --from the introduction

5-0 out of 5 stars A Basic Book Does the Job
One of the most telling points that Dr. Robert Hatherill makes in EAT TO BEAT CANCER is that there is no such thing as a Universal Panacea for cancer.Cancer has so many facets, causes, and potential cures that he urges readers to view cancer as a spectrum, upon which they can correctly judge where they stand.Once readers know what cancer is, what causes it to grow and mutate, and how to treat it, then they are well on the "safe" side of that spectrum.Hatherill defines cancer as cells that mutate uncontrollably, causing the body's immune system to degrade. The causes he notes are legion--some of which are beyond our control and some not.Our environment is a huge ungodly mass of toxic chemicals, but even here he wisely cautions about taking common sense precautions.We might not be able to filter out the noxious air as we walk abgout the street, but we can certainly ensure that seemingly harmless toxins in our homes are exposed as not harmless after all.His book is full of matters that we probably already know, but to see them listed in neat rows and columns motivates us to action.I found especially helpful his handy "Super Eight Food Groups," which not only lists what they are but how they interact synergestically to protect us.He has other useful chapters on vitamin and amino acid supplementation.Although he warns us about the evils of tobacco and alcohol, he does not preach and thunder against their use.Rather, he understands that bad habits die slowly and he includes a specific regimen for those who cannot live without either. Hatherill also zeroes in on the gender specific issues of cancer, namely breast cancer for women, and prostate cancer for men.In both cases, he notes that a natural approach may not only be cheaper than surgery or chemo, but also far safer and more effective.Finally, he concludes with a series of recipes that are easily prepared, nutritious and, inexpensive.What one takes away from EAT TO BEAT CANCER is a plan not to get cancer in the first place, or failing that, what to do after your doctor drops the dreaded "C" word on you.The inner message here is that cancer is both avoidable and manageable, two terms that we must keep in mind as we make our life's daily choices.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good basic info, not well written
This book contains good basic information and practical advice, though it is lacking in-depth explanations. So if you are fine with taking this author's advice at face value without scientific explanations, this book may be useful to you. However, I do not think it is very well-written; perhaps the researcher should have hired a real writer to edit his manuscript. I recommend Anti-cancer: A New Way of Life, by David Serban-Schreiber, instead. This book contains most of the same recommendations, with some additional updates from more recent research, and it is a MUCH better read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eat To Beat Cancer
Don't wait until you or someone in your family has cancer!Now is the time to REALLY understand how our food and environment affect our chances of being diagnosed with cancer.

"Eat to Beat Cancer" is an easy to understand book about how we can PREVENT cancer. Who knew? Follow this book with "To Buy or Not to Buy Organic: What You Need to Know to Choose the Healthiest, Safest, Most Earth-Friendly Food" and you will be armed with the info you need to make the right choices for your health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is cancer preventable?Most is...
General Content: Cancer is one of leading causes of death in our world and contrary to what many people believe, most cancers are preventable. Proper diet plays a key role in preventing cancer and this title by Dr. Hatherill is one of the best resources I've seen for building a cancer-fighting diet. The beautiful part about the recommendations in this audiobook is that they won't just help you to prevent cancer. They'll also help prevent heart disease, strokes and a whole host of other maladies in addition to helping you to shed excess weight. Perhaps most importantly the book contains information on helping to reduce the likelihood that your children will contract cancer.

One of the things that I liked best about this book was that it drew upon information from a number of different countries around the world. Certain countries have very low rates of certain types of cancer so it makes a lot of sense to study them in an attempt to determine what they are doing right. For example, the Japanese have a low rate of lung cancer despite high rates of smoking which seems unusual. However, Dr. Hatherill points out that factors in their diet such as their increased use of soy and consumption of green tea helped to ward off lung cancer. Information like this makes this title a goldmine for anyone looking to reduce their chances of contracting cancer.

Audio-Specific Content: "Eat to Beat Cancer" is read by the author who does a great job. I listened to the abridged version which contained two cassettes and lasted approximately 3 hours. The abridgement was fine but given the amount of excellent information in the audiobook, I'm tempted to go out and buy the book to see what else is in there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great title for a great book!
This is a great book with a great title: I HAVE CANCER: WHAT SHOULD I DO?The authors, Drs. Gonzalez, Miranda-Massari and Saul, tell us just what we can do.After a comprehensive, yet amazingly comprehendible explanation of how cancer forms and spreads, the authors cite decades of (largely ignored) research involving successful orthomolecular treatment of this disease.The reader learns that he has options as he chooses the path (or paths) of treatment in battling cancer.Specific forms of the disease and their treatment are discussed, as well as general strategies for building up the body's ability to reclaim and maintain health.

The authors do not discourage readers from seeking advice from their physicians in their battle with cancer.On the contrary, they ask that the readers learn what ALL of their options are, so that when they ask themselves, "What should I do?", they are in the position of being able to make intelligent and informed decisionsas they take charge of their health.

This is an important little book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutritional medicine successfully fights cancer
Applying the principles of nutritional medicine specifically to the treatment of cancer, Gonzalez, Miranda & Saul in "I Have Cancer: What Should I Do?" have written a surprisingly hopeful book. I say surprisingly because one might think, if the methods for treating this disease are as successful as described therein, that everyone would have already heard about them and the face of medicine would be changed forever.That is the promise and I imagine the likely outcome of this book.If read and appreciated by the medical establishment, the book may very well provide a new and fresh outlook to a difficult medical specialty -- and save many lives.

The book starts by establishing the authors' background and expertise. All have had personal experience with cancer, so they are personally motivated; all are experts in Orthomolecular Medicine; and all recommend working cooperatively with doctors to enhance the patient's treatment. They explain that it is important for the patient to find a health-care provider who can listen and help -- and for the cancer patient, this means someone who is knowledgeable about therapeutic nutrition as well as hopeful.Orthomolecular medicine works by providing nutrients like vitamins and minerals that the body recognizes and needs, in sufficiently high quantities to allow the body to overcome disease. In addition to proper nutrition, the book describes a comprehensive and integrative program of treatment, personally motivated, that will be most effective in inducing health. Patience is what a patient needs -- some may find the book's advice difficult to follow, but the important thing is to seriously consider the different therapies and learn for yourself. Don't self-diagnose, but along with your medical professional, own your own case. If you are aware of your body and the treatment, you are going to be much more effective in an informed team.

Some doctors have advised that nutritional supplements should not be taken along with chemotherapy.The book explains that this is incorrect. Many doctors, aware that cancer drugs are toxic, simply haven't read up on the benefits of optimizing the nutritional state. Bad nutrition does not fight cancer. Nutrients given at high enough doses can optimize the body's biochemistry to allow it to react to stress which helps during treatment. Proper nutrition can reduce the secondary effects of the oncology treatment, strengthen the patient's immune system to prevent disease and reinforce the patient's health and recovery, and with appropriate macro and micro quantities of nutrients, treat the disease directly.

In fact, high doses of vitamin C and other nutrients can specifically target cancer cells. This may seem unbelievable at first. We have all heard of the healing aspects of vitamin C (ascorbate) -- it is non-toxic and unlike drugs isn't harmful when we take large quantities. It is a vitamin for us because our bodies require it for health but can't make it, so we must get it from the food we eat. But how much is enough, especially if we are fighting cancer? Most animal species except primates and guinea pigs make vitamin C in an amount equivalent to our bodies making 5,000-10,000 mg/day -- and they make more when they are sick or stressed. Vitamin C is concentrated into cells by transporters, special proteins on the surface of all cells that selectively take up biochemicals needed by the cell. It is a powerful anti-oxidant that helps the body to prevent oxidative stress that comes from disease. Every cell needs anti-oxidants, especially vitamin C, to prevent harmful free radicals that damage enzymes and can cause mutations in DNA. Additionally, the authors explain, vitamin C is selectively toxic to cancer cells.

The book goes into an adequate amount of depth on the attributes of cancer, what it is, how it starts, and what allows it to progress. Even if you don't have a good understanding of biology and molecules, you will likely be able to follow the reasoning. Cancers start by mutations that unregulate genes controlling the division and metabolism of the cell. Many cancers don't use oxygen like normal cells, but utilize anaerobic metabolism, which means they need more blood sugar (glucose) than normal cells do, because they don't use it as efficiently.The growth of cancer cells is thought to be regulated and targeted by vitamin C because they take up large amounts of vitamin C along with their huge need for glucose. The vitamin C is thought to act in the cancer cell paradoxically as a pro-oxidant, generating hydrogen peroxide which stops the cell from dividing. Thus vitamin C can specifically target cancer cells, and along with its function to enhance the immune system, regress tumors. The effect is robust and has been shown many times in the clinical treatment of cancer patients. The amounts of vitamin C needed for this effect are large, and may require intravenous application of buffered ascorbate to achieve the high blood levels necessary, along with high doses of vitamin C taken orally.A study done by the Mayo Clinic didn't find any effect of ascorbate on cancer -- but the book explains that the lack of the anti-cancer effect was likely because the Mayo study didn't use enough vitamin C, discontinued therapy too soon, and doses were oral only, not intravenous. Vitamin C at high doses is known to be a very effective treatment for many types of cancer -- and it is non-toxic.

Along with information about cancer and how it can be targeted by vitamin C, there is a generous section about good nutrition and its helpful effects on preventing and reversing cancer. The body recognizes cancer cells and actively works to defeat them with its immune system, but it needs help. We must provide the materials that can enhance the body's immune system and reduce contaminants and stress that can cause free radicals and initiation of cancer. The biological terrain of the body is important but delicate, and can be damaged by eating the wrong foods or smoking. We are encouraged to eat a healthy diet of pure water, whole grains, lots of fresh vegetables and fruits, enhance our intake of omega-3 fatty acids, and avoid an excess of high-calorie foods and animal foods such as red meat and dairy products. This diet is known to prevent cancer, for example, in Japan, where cancer rates are low and life expectancy is long. We all differ in our biochemistry because of genetic differences and our different daily lives, and so, as Dr Roger J. Williams pointed out, an average diet is likely to cause deficiency in some nutrients. Thus we can help the body fight off disease by supplementing our food with an adequate intake of macro minerals such as magnesium and potassium, and micro minerals and vitamins.Vitamin D has recently been shown to prevent many types of cancer, and vitamin E and vitamin C are important in preventing heart disease and cancer. The book includes a complete program of excellent nutrition, applicable to all of us, with or without cancer.

Do I understand and believe every word? No, I found several ideas to be on the fringe of strict science, such as energy therapy; the role of magnetic fields in the body; how eating lots of protein depletes pancreatic enzymes;and why food containing active enzymes helps with cancer. But then, if you want to check the statements and theories, the authors provide references throughout. There is a short section of patient success stories -- people (including physicians) who have received Orthomolecular treatment and survived, with or without standard cancer therapy.

Overall, I think the book is excellent.It is chock full of helpful information, much of which will be new to many readers. The book is very well-written and easy to read, and it has an extremely positive tone -- most likely because Orthomolecular therapy works -- and not only for cancer!

5-0 out of 5 stars What a relief: facts, alternatives and compassion
This is an important book: all three authors were colleagues of Hugh D.
Riordan, MD, one of the very first physicians to give high-dose intravenous
vitamin C to effectively fight cancer. The authors are remarkably cheerful
for wounded healers. Each has experienced loss due to cancer; one of the
authors lost his wife. You might say, well, if they are so smart, then how
did THAT happen?But the authors are not preachy nor do they come across as
know-it-alls. They recommend conventional cancer therapy along with natural
adjunctive therapy. It is not a one-or-the-other ultimatum. Better nutrition
means better quality of life, and almost always improved length of life.
After all, when is the last time that poor nutrition cured anything? There
is truly good news in this book. Vitamins taken along with chemo results in
undiminished drug effect plus fewer side effects. Intravenous vitamin C is
selectively toxic to cancer cells, and does not interfere with chemo. If you
have been told differently, this is the book for you. The authors back up
their statements with a large number of peer-reviewed scientific studies.
You do not have to "believe"in vitamins or nutrition or alternative
medicine. The proof is here, and it is good news for cancer patients and
their families. This book is not the sure cure. But it is a big step towards
ultimate cure of this dreaded disease that affects so many. Here is
information you really need to read. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How a cure for cancer was suppressed for 50 years.
Mr. Haught, an investigative journalist, started out to do an expose on a "quack", and soon found himself writing about a grand conspiracy to suppress a holistic cure for cancer.He details the coverup of Dr.Gerson's work with documentary evidence from books, newspapers and even theCongressional Record.

This book is inspiring for patients with advancedcancer, since there are many stories of patients alive years after theirphysicians sent them home to die, including five presented by Dr. Gerson tothe Pepper-Neely Subcommittee of the Senate in 1946.It is also maddeningand frustrating to realize that millions of people have died unnecessarilyof cancer because the AMA does not consider the therapy"scientific".

Product Description
Mistletoe is a parasitic evergreen plant that lives on trees such apple and elm. Modern complementary therapies for cancer increasingly make use of mistletoe preparations. However, because mistletoe grows on many different trees, the properties of the plant vary according to the host tree. For the first time, this book presents an important reference for practitioners on the characteristics of each type of mistletoe, and what kind of cancers they are best suited to treat. Thirteen host trees are described, covering all aspects from mythology and botany to homeopathy and flower essences. The author then pulls the various characteristics together to provide a unique guide to which patients might benefit most from the different types of mistletoe. The results will be useful not only in treating cancer but also in prevention. The book includes specific case-studies as well as notes on supplementary therapies using metals. ... Read more

Product Description
Cancer is the Number Two cause of death in the U.S. A new edition of the "Grape Cure." Widely used by holistic health professionals in other countries to fight disease, often in patients with "inoperable cancer." Grapes contain a very powerful antioxidant that protects your body cells from "free radicals."

Scientists have given it the name of "proanthocyanidins," but it is not new. As far back as 1556, books on this wonderful nature cure had been published in various European languages.

Dr. Brandt was diagnosed with cancer in 1916, shortly after her mother died from cancer. Working with her own diet, fasting, etc., she began to see the relationship of the food she ate to the progression or regression of her cancer. It took nine years to achieve her healing. She discovered that a meat diet perpetuates cancer, a vegetarian diet conquers it, and that organic grapes aid healing. She helped others rid themselves of this deadly disease, left her native South Africa to bring her discovery to the U.S., and wrote this book. She shares her journey back to wellness in this small, yet remarkable book, reprinted because "the need is greater than ever for natural discoveries to reach the people." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Grape Cure
I have been looking at many alternative methods for fighting cancers because I have found the allopathic method to not work on several people lately. Not to mention that the allopathic doctors missed some very obvious signs on 3 of the people
I found this book interesting and it seems that, given more recent scientific research information on grapes, that it might be something to incorporate into a cancer protocol when using natural methods.
I appreciated the book and enjoyed hearing the woman's story. I read in another review that she seemed to ramble on, but I felt the way the story was told was very honest and natural.

4-0 out of 5 stars Now Scientically Proven
This book originally written in 1920s by Dr. Johanne Brandt is fantastic. Although the reason why red grape juice can cure cancers remained unknown for more than seven decades until 1997, the major anti-cancer ingredient in this grape is now known: a polyphenol called "resveratrol" (R3).

It inhibits a Tyr-kinase called Syk, which is essential for the activation of several oncogenic kinases such as PAK and AKT. Since PAK is essential for the growth of more than 70% of human cancers, red grape juice, red wine, R3 or its derivatives could cure these PAK-dependent cancers. It is also known now that R3 is useful for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as NF (neurofibromatosis), Alzheimer's (AD), Huntington's (HD) and ALS.

So it would be worth reading this book, just to get a general idea, although the book itself does not tell you much of science (molecular biology of cancer) behind this "miracle" cure. However, I don't think the "fast" a wise approach. Fast should be replaced by a more moderate approach such as "low" (70%) calorie diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth A Try!
Dr. Brandt's story is simply put and quickly read. It describes not only her cure but also the cures of many others. In fact, a little review on the internet will increase your belief in this method. Chemotherapy and radiation are brought to you by the same people who took away doctors' licenses when they washed their hands between patients. Beware the AMA and FDA. When someone has cancer, I give them this book.
Keep smilin'!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Grape Cure is old but still relevant information
30 years ago I participated in the Grape Cure diet with a friend who had lymph cancer. After the removal of a lymph tumor, he developed cigar size tumors in the lymph glands under the arms and at the groin line. They completely disappeared after following the Grape Cure fast! Unfortunately my friend was not willing to stay on a raw foods diet, as indicated by the author, and within a year he was dead. I have never forgotten this book, and I was really please to see it was still available though written in 1920. It may not work for everyone, but if I had cancer, I would definately choose grapes over death. If you at all subscribe to "you are what you eat" then you will see the simple logic in purifying this way.

1-0 out of 5 stars complete waste of money and time
I'm horrified that Amazon would even sell such a "book".This woman rambles on and on in this completely unorganized book.The ramblings are VERY weird and unnerved me that there was such a person out there able to publish "books".The writing sounded like she was high on meth / pot or some type of drug.Her recommendations and the way she basically "cured" her "cancer" (it was unproven whether she had cancer or not, but it's hard to make sense of it the way she rambles so incoherently) was to fast (only water) for 3+ weeks, and then eat only grapes for quite a few months after that.WHAT???This is a joke, right??That can't possibly be healthy for anyone, especially someone sick with cancer.I think you'd die from it even if you were healthy to start. Read the first page that rambles and it only gets WAYyyyyy worse after that.Don't waste your money.I'm disgusted that I did.(I've never written an Amazon review before but absolutely had to for this one.I'll be happy if I save even one person from this nut case) ... Whatever became of Eydie Mae?I find this book to be inspiring and her determination is admirable.I waffle back and forth between raw foods and TAD.This book makes me want to do better!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Truthful
This is truly an inspiriational book on one lady who decided to truly take her health into her own hands and as a result discovered the human body's innate healing ability.It is a testament to the human spirit and and power within the human body.Dont mind psuedo-doctors like Dr Jay who are you typical know nothing but what Big Pharma wants em to thinkthey know it alls, but dont have a freaking clue about what real health.The only reason why he comes on here to state his opinion is he's not getting your money so he can review $6000 watches he buys off Amazon. Dr Jay, you are a worthless pile ^^

5-0 out of 5 stars A Caring Person Who Gently Encourages an Open Mind
Don't wait until you or someone you know has cancer to read this book. It can help anyone to be encouraged to live and eat in a way that cooperates with the way our bodies were designed and perhaps help us to avoid having to face a life threatening disease. Eydie Mae is just an average person faced with not your average decisions. It was HER life and HER health and HER decision. Ann Wigmore's approach worked for her and she can't keep it to herself. I appreciate that. I am quite capable of gathering information from many sources and then deciding for myself which approach I will use just as Eydie Mae did. Dr. Jay's review insult's us "uneducated pseudo-intellectuals" or in other words, us average people, by implying that we can't possibly know anything about our bodies or disease or think for ourselves and can't learn it without years of study at a university. Eydie Mae doesn't tell you her way is the only way. She is living proof that her way worked for at least one person and perhaps can help someone else. She just asks you to have an open mind. She lets you know it is okay to color outside the lines. Since Dr. Jay says that natural remedies are "a death sentence" for many cancer patients, let me ask him this, "Can you, Dr. Jay, guarantee that if I "see my doctor and get the PROPER care" I will survive and live to write a book as Eydie Mae did?"

1-0 out of 5 stars Bogus and Deadly
You cannot hope to cure cancer using natural remedies.This is a death sentence for most cancer patients.While nutrition plays a key role, those who prey on the hopeful souls of patients should suffer a perilous fate.See your doctor and get the proper care.Your life is too valuable to risk on luck and the stupid greedy actions of uneducated pseudo-intellectuals.

5-0 out of 5 stars God Has Sent Us An Angel
As a breast cancer survivor without chemotherapy or radiation I found this book to be the most encouraging and inspiring of all. If you are looking for a simple, painfree, natural, safe, alternative method to the barbaric therapies that conventional medicine offers then please read Eydie Mae's book. She talks about her entire experience from being diagnosed by a "specialist" who screamed at her husband insisting that she would die if she did not agree to a radical mastectomy,to finally finding her way through the Ann Wigmore living foods diet.It really is a delightful, easy to read book. It's like talking to an old friend.You don't have to lose your breasts (or your mind).God has provided us with everything that we need on this planet to heal ourselves naturally.Surely if he can create oceans and mountains, suns, and galaxies then he can heal our bodies through natural methods. Stay strong and know that you are never ever alone.I also recommend reading Three Magic Words by U.S. Anderson - excellent!Also check out natural healing methods by Dr.George Malkomus. He healed himself of colon cancer naturally.I think the title of his book is Back to The Garden.He is also the founder of Hallelujah Acres There is also Dr. Lorraine Day who healed herself of advanced invasive breast cancer naturally. ... Product Description

Great food for inflammation sufferers.

Cut your finger accidentally and the area will swell, redden, and heat up. This type of acute inflammatory response is the body's reaction to trauma, and it's an essential part of the healing process. But inflammation can be harmful when it hangs around too long and refuses to leave. When the inflammation switch refuses to turn off, the body operates as if it is always under attack (the older we get, the more likely this is to happen). White blood cells flood the system for weeks, months, and even years.

Researchers are now linking low-grade, persistent inflammation to premature aging, heart disease, M.S., diabetes, Alzheimer's, psoriasis, arthritis, and cancer.
While anti-inflammatory drugs do exist, they can injure the stomach or suppress the immune system. Fortunately, the situation can be remedied by a change in diet, specifically by altering the kinds of fats you eat. Omega-3 fatty acids tend to decrease inflammation while omega-6 fats and trans-fats increase inflammation. While many foods in the standard American diet (unrefined white flour, sugar, red meat, diary, fast food, and food additives) exacerbate inflammation, a healthy diet made up of fish, nuts, seeds, oils, lean grass-fed meats, and fruits and vegetables can help lessen or prevent inflammation.Likewise, certain spices such as turmeric, cloves, and ginger have proven anti-inflammatory activity.

Anti-Inflammatory Foods for Health will help those with inflammation incorporate anti-inflammatory foods into their everyday diet.Sample recipes may include French-Canadian Pea Soup, Sumac Salmon, Maple-Ginger Butternut Squash, Lime-Ginger Glazed Chicken with Fennel Relish, Green Salad with Grapes and Sunflower Seeds, Cod with Saffron Sauce, and more.

A. Introduction

Although I do enjoy great food prepared by others much more talented and patient than I am, this reviewer never developed a sense for consistently caring for, and preparing,his own healthy food. But this book changed all that, in a practical and eye-catching way.

B. What I like about this book

In terms of format (presentation and appearance), the front page says it all: a) a 23-word title, b) three color-pictures with relevant food groups (walnuts, spinach, and smoked salmon), and c) the lead authors names with a mini-résumé behind their names, establishing their academic credentials (MPH, RN, LD, CNS, LDN, Ph.D., etc). As for the back page, instead of the standard endorsement by food industry and nutritionist celebrities, the authors and/or publishers have decided to reserve this space for providing more information about the book's content, and quizzing (via Multiple-Choice-Questions) the potential reader about his/her nutritional savvy, and listing no less than 10 recipes described in the book. On top of all these benefits, the book is reasonably priced ($19.95 US; £12.99 UK; $23.95 CAN)

As for the CONTENT (and substance): In addition to a section for Acknowledgments (pp. 184) and an elaborate index (pp. 186-192), the book is structured around the main food groups essential for good health:
* Introduction (pp. 7-23);
* Chapter 1: Boost Omega-3's (pp. 24-54);
* Chapter 2: Add-in antioxidants (pp. 55-85);
* Chapter 3: Fabulous fiber (pp. 86-117);
* Chapter 4: Change the energy balance (pp. 118-152); and...
* Chapter 5: Be carb savvy (pp. 153-183).

The introduction is worthy a separate mention: in this 17-page exposé, the authors introduce the readers to the basics of nutrition and principles for gaining and maintaining good health. They do so with a) two-column text; b) five tables, three figures, and two pictures! As they say, "A picture is worth a 1,000 words..." In this well-illusstrated book, the authors have made good use of the one picture/thousand words concept!

Each chapter basically follows the same pattern:
* An introduction to the subject with a two-column text;
* A `FYi' insert in the shape of text surrounded by a circle;
* A series of two-page recipes, with text on one side, and a full-page color photograph on the other page. The mouth-watering rendition of these full-page and full-color recipes is worth, by itself, the price of the book!

Each full-page recipe contains the following...
* Introduction to the recipe;
* Measurements of ingredients;
* Description of the various steps in the recipe;
* And finally a nutritional analysis (i.e., calories, fat, protein, carbohydrate, fiber and cholesterol content, if any).

Many, though NOT all, recipes come with full-page color photographs. Some recipes are illustrated with a two-page photograph a) `Flaxseed blueberry walnut pancakes' (pp. 98-99); b) `Fiesta gazpacho with grilled shrimp' (pp. 128-129); and c) `Orange mango chicken fajitas' (pp. 140-141). In particular, I like the recipes for...
* `Smoked salmon sushi' (pp. 46-47); and
* `Mediterranean stuffed tomato' (pp. 74-75).
* Of particular esthetic, culinary, and other value to this reviewer is the recipe for `Peach-berry Port Wine Gelatin!' (pp 176). The adjoining picture features no less than three delicious berries, namely raspberries, blueberries and blackberries (thank goodness, not the electronic types).

I also appreciate the great care the authors and publishers have given to the authors' background (See `About the authors,' pp. 185). Two engaging full-color photographs of the two authors, with matching informative and descriptive caption(s).

C. What can be improved

Alas, as much as I wish, as a book reviewer, to find something to gripe about a book under my review, in this case I could NOT find anything substantial.Since it is NOT designed to be an academic book, there is not need to complain about the absence of footnotes, endnotes, and references cited. This makes it all the more readable by its intended audience.

I am fully and painfully aware that Rowe and Davis did NOT get the fullest acclaim they deserve.Some reviewers take the authors to task about including canola oil (e.g., Telecia Radke), tomato recipes (e.g., Dr. Loulou) and omega-3 to 6 ratio (e.g. Dr. Mark S. Edinger). As any person who has lived long enough has discovered and knows, one cannot please all the people all the time. In my own medical school training, we was told tomatoes are good for our health as a good source for antioxidants. Now, according to Dr. Loulou, tomatoes should be avoided at all cost! Whom am I to believe? Same thing with canola oil. If you don't like it, leave it...! But please, do NOT ever ruin a book's rating (20%), just because you happen to find canola oil or tomatoes toxic for `your' body. If it is as toxic as Telecia says, why doesn't the FDA ban its import from Canada? With a rating of 1/5, Dr. Mark S. Edinger does NOT earn points for charity, compassion and generosity towards the authors (1/5 stars = 20%). Was the omega 6 to omega 3 ratio the ENTiRE concern of the book? If NOT, why would Dr. Edinger give such a low rating? Does he not remember that we will be judged by the measure we judge others... And I dare NOT judge Dr. Edinger, whether he is a lowly doctor in some rural county clinic, or the chief medical adviser to the latest Pope, as a rating of (-) infinity would NOT do proper justice to his misplaced impudence and utmost arrogance. In such important matters of truth vs. untruth, I'd rather be known as a no-respecter of persons...

This book has been published in 2008, and this review written in 2010. In two years, much can and does happen, requiring, amng other things, the update of the authors' biosketch. I can think of at least three-five things in the life of the LEAD author that may need to be updated in the next edition of this great book: a) city of residence, b) marital status, c) number of people living at home, d) possibly even her new vocational status, and e) update on the number of dogs living with the author at home.

In the acknowledgment(s) section (pp. 184), lead author Barbara Rowe mentions the need for, and assistance of, food tasters and testers. In anticipation of a new, revised, and improved, edition of this otherwise GREAT book, I endeavor to apply for the newly created official position of `food taster cum food tester...' Besides tasting the food, as a semi-professional photographer (or advanced amateur), I can also double as a self-appointed graphic reporter for the book's many recipes. If and once that happens, however, I could no longer write an impartial review, as it would be an inherent conflict of interest, being a food taster cum photographer vs. an objective book reviewer without any vested fiduciary interests!

D. Conclusion

This highly readable book is a great value, i.e., getting the proverbial most `bang for the buck!' [where else can one find a recipe with a full-color picture for $0.137 or 14 cents per recipe, assuming there are at least a hundred of them in this book?] Furthermore, it can change a reader's approach to his/her health through the preparation and consumption of a great variety of healthy and health-promoting foods. I suggest this book should be a daily companion of any housewife and/or househusband, or whoever prepares the meals for the loved ones in every English-speaking household in America and around the world... [A translation into major languages such as Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, Polish, and German, among others, should follow in short order...] Its place is on the kitchen counter, rather than collecting the proverbial dust on the shelves in one's personal library!

NOTE: No book, except perhaps for the Bible, is perfect and can, therefore, be improved upon; the same principle applies to a book reviewer like me. 4-0 out of 5 stars Anti-Inflammatory Foods for Health
Tonight I made the Pink Salmon Cakes with Mango-Raspberry chutney and it was spectacular!Have tried several salmon cake recipes but this is TRUELY THE BEST I have ever had!It was light and deliciously full of flavors of the mango, raspberry, sweet corn and tomato..a great summer dinner.Husband doesn't like cilantro so I used parsley instead.Can't wait to try the other recipes!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Missed a major inflammatory food group!
This book starts out great with the discussion of how food can inflame the body with an unbalanced intake of omega 6 and omega 3 fatty acids.However the authors must be unaware that all grains, legumes and most seeds have a 20:1 ratio of Omega 6 to Omega 3 making them inflammatory.Several recipes in the book are then inflammatory because of the grain.This is a tough pill to swallow but it appears that the human genome functions better with a balanced 1:1 ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids and this genetic trait was in place before agricultural practices which led to grain consumption and more recently seed oils which are very inflammatory.Foods consumed prior to agriculture would have been fruits and vegetables, wild game, fish and moderate portion of nuts. Ironically all these foods have a well balanced ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids.Go Paleo!!

1-0 out of 5 stars a bit deceitful
Although there are good recipes in the book, I am amazed the authors endorse the use of canola oil and margarine.Canola oil comes from the rape seed, which is part of the mustard family of plants. Rape is the most toxic of all food-oil plants. Like soy, rape is a weed. Insects will not eat it; it is deadly poisonous! The oil from the rape seed is a hundred times more toxic than soy oil.
Canola is a semi-drying oil that is used as lubricant, fuel, soap and synthetic rubber base, and as an illuminant for the slick color pages you see in magazines. It is an industrial oil and does not belong in the body!
Margine isa synthetic food and a hydrogenated oil.Loads of literature to support eliminating it from your diet.
I use the recipes but make substitutions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Book
I learned so much from reading the information about nutrition that Rowe and Davis share in this book.The recipes are delicious and easy to follow, and the illustrations are enticing.I'm looking forward to trying more of the recipes and learning to incorporate healthy foods in my everyday meals. I strongly recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting read.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in alternative treatments for cancer.It is enlightening and informative and very well written.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have seen these salves WORK
This book was a terrific find for our family and a validation of what we have known for years. My grandmother was diagnosed with a huge tumor near her liver in 1957. I remember entering her bedroom and seeing what looked like white cocktail onions embedded in the surface of her abdomen prior to their complete emergence. (She had a jar full of them preserved in alcohol on the dresser.) She used what is basically the the red & yellow salves mentioned in the book. (She lived cancer free for 30 years and died in her 80's) My father "pulled" a lump the size and thickness of an oreo cookie from his chest after the Dr had told him that his "sore spot" was cancerous. The interested Dr had the lump biopsied and the report said it was necrotic tissue of some sort and appeared to be "burned at the edges" ... or something like that.Personally... I was diagnosed with breast cancer (early stages) and I tried it using the same techniques that my mother used to "pull" a lump shaped like a fried egg from her breast...Same batch of salve.It did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for me. That is the dilemna of these salves. The author herself mentions having had this experience.READ THE BOOK and LISTEN TO YOUR DOCTOR. I see no reason why a person can't try the salves and then proceed to the doctor if there is no results.There is a lot to gain and not much to lose.

5-0 out of 5 stars Over priced.
This book can be purchased from the author at her web site brand new for 42.50. I do not understand why Amazon and the other sellers are selling used ones for 74+ dollars. I come here often for books and this is the first time I feel taken advantage of. I will buy the book because it is highly recommended for anyone who wants to formulate cancer salves, but I will buy it directly from Ingrid this time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lifetime student & advocate of Alternative Medicine
Cancer Salves is a fabulous reference resource and a truly fascinating read.Dr. Naiman has accomplished quite a feat in this book.When I got my copy, I literally could not put it down and as I read more and more of it I became more and more in awe of the amount of research that obviously went into this less than one inch thick volume.

Throughout the book, Dr. Naiman has referenced her sources and outlined all the cautions that one must be cognizant of when embarking on any healing journey.Think of this book like the old Portuguese Pilot Books that were so highly valued as the only reliable navigational aids prior to the sextant.Like them, this book will aid you in navigating through the physical and spiritual journey that is healing.It tells tales of both success and failure, it gives further resources, points out pitfalls in science as well as philosophy--a truly epic ode to healing and the reform of our philosophy of health.

Although Cancer Salves is obviously and specifically focused on cancer, I found that the information provided on individual herbs is very useful generally and not just for cancer.The appendices, especially the suggested reading list, and the bibliography alone are worth the price of the book.Dr. Naiman's musings on the philosophy of health and healing will be echoing within me for some time to come.

Finally, I would like to add my own cautionary note:Do not attempt to put any of the programs outlined in Cancer Salves--or any other alternative medical resource--into practice unless you are prepared to take full and complete personal responsibility for your own health and healing.This book is a map, an atlas, a Pilot Book, not a guarantee.It gives you resources to make your own educated alternative medical decisions.What comes of your decisions is your own responsibility, just as it should be. I for one am very grateful to Dr. Naiman for this invaluable resource.

Shortly after I received the book, I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Naiman.I was just as impressed by her knowledge, presence, and integrity as I was by her book.
