4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful but basic
I found this helpful but pretty basic. I had already learned most of the book contents by surfing the net and going to responsible medical sites (e.g., OncologyChannel, Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins, etc).I bought it primarily as a reference to keep on hand as my mother goes through treatment for ovarian cancer.I was able to skip about half the book as it was so elementary, but others may find that information more of a revelation and useful.I do think it will be a helpful reference to have at my fingertips as time progresses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book
Book was delivered on time and as stated in the ad.Book has many pages of information to help over come common types of cancer.Traditional cancer treatment will most likely set up future cancers.Be careful to examine and check out each treatment and then select the one that will work for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars not worth the paper it's printed on
As a cancer patient, I had great hopes when I ordered this book. I had received an email from a Doctor's site I subscribed to which offered the book at an astronomical price. It had raving reviews from supposedly happy customers... it had saved their lives, etc... (reviews probably written by the writer's staff).
I was totally disappointed: there is not a single valuable piece of information in this book. It is full of outdated data, impossible to follow advice, and nothing that any intelligent person cannot find on the net.
I am glad I spent only a few dollars for this piece of garbage, I would have felt robbed if I had paid the full advertised price.
I am donating the book to our local library with a WARNING: FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to fight cancer & win
The product was fine, but the odering process and results were not.I initially ordered one copy, then canceled that order (received a cancellation e-mail) and order two copies.I only received one copy and haven't checked yet to see if I paid for two.Odds are I did.

Vegetables, fruits, and herbs have been used as cancer preventatives for millennia. But the research community is currently experiencing a surge in information related to the effect of plant products in cancer treatment. Bioactive Foods and Extracts: Cancer Treatment and Prevention organizes these cutting-edge findings. It also addresses the wide availability of botanicals and their extracts and how their use is largely unregulated, particularly in the United States. This well-organized work is a must-have resource for researchers and healthcare professionals who are charged with making decisions regarding the benefits, risks, and value of botanicals in the prevention and treatment of cancers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The only book I needed to read
This was the most calming and direct information about cancer and my own response to it, that I read after hearing "my news."It gave me confidence that I could take whatever came my way, and gave me a common sense approach of how to handle the process and hope in the midst of all the clamoring voices and choices I had.

Thank you Dr. Fintel and Gerald McDermit!

5-0 out of 5 stars Heal the mind, then heal the body.
I have two books by Dr. Fintel and he is also my Medical Oncologist.I got the book before ever meeting him and read it along with others from end to end.You do have to heal the mind before the body. The book tacklesthis very major issure along with giving you the needed information thatyou strive for upon learning of having cancer. This information isapproached in a manner that anyone could understand.I highly recommendthis book to friends and relatives of cancer victims also. The supportgroup surrounding a person has the largest effect on the mind.Next theperson has to make it right in his own mind before presenting himself toothers. That's where this book surpasses other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have cancer, this is THE book to read!
After rushing out and buying six books on cancer, this single volume summarises the diognosis, the treatments, the physical phases, the emotional phases and spiritual phasaes of cancer.I wish I'd known aboutthis book earlier. The language is clear and concise and the facts arejust that, FACTS not myths or untried methods. It covers even the verypractical aspects of life- threatening illness, how to pay the bills, whichno other book even thought to mention.I wholeheartedly recommend thisbook. It is a MUST. It should be in EVERY doctor's office, every libraryand every one who deals with cancer patients on even an occassional basis.

It cuts the fog of hear-say and unfoundedexpectations on Cancer. It tells what the doctors could do, what thepatient can do, and what the family and loved ones around must do. Clearand practical, it allows all those touched by this disease to face itsquarely and move on to practical and tension-relieving productive actions.Lifts the shell-shocked out of the shock to deeds and positive actions. 5-0 out of 5 stars Helping To Cure Cancer By Diet Therapy
This book is an excellent weapon in our fight against cancer. One of the alternate therapies to put in the powder keg in the battle against cancer is diet. The author of this book has been called a genius by many. Diet can be a powerful weapon against cancer because of diet's effect on our immune system.

5-0 out of 5 stars there are natural alternatives to healting cancer
I have heard Charlotte Gerson speak and have read many of the testimonies of healing in this book.I am convinced that raw foods and juicing, plus elimination of toxic foods are essential in maintaining good health andhealing from all disease. It makes so much sense that our diets arekilling us, but I have heard so many doctors say that it doesn't matterwhat we are eating.Listen to Max Gerson and what his patients have tosay!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A non-toxic cure for cancer
Max Gerson M.D. cured more than a few terminal cancer patients with food. Some people who were supposed to die 50 years ago are still alive. This is probably the most important book on medicine published during this century

This is a book that America's "cancer industry" would like to keep under wraps. Within the pages of this technical treatise, you'll find complete how-to details that thousands of seriously ill cancer patients have used over the years to give their bodies the power to heal their cancers. Using a powerful juice therapy and natural diet of organic fruits and vegetables, the Gerson therapy has saved the lives of men and women that traditional medical establishment called "terminal." Reflecting the latest research and updated recommendations for healthy eating, this cookbook makes it fun to eat right and contains tips for smart shopping, quick tricks for judging portion sizes, and delicious substitutions.
Amazon.com Review
This "celebration of food, friends, and healthy living"follows the Food Guide Pyramid recommendations of eating 5 or moreservings of fruit and vegetables, 6 to 10 servings of grain foods, and2 to 3 servings of protein foods daily, and limiting fats andsweets. The recipes are low in fat, high in nutrition, and ofteninventive. "Tapioca Fruit Pudding" is made with orange juice andvanilla yogurt instead of milk and eggs. "Stuffed Shells with Beef andTomato Sauce" has only one-half pound of lean ground beef for 6servings. All chicken recipes start with skinned chicken. Calories andfat grams per serving are provided, and many of the recipes are farless than the recommended maximum 30 percent fat. No esotericingredients are required.

The strange thing about this cookbook isthat the illustrations are all black-and-white photographs ofcelebrities--screen and TV stars, an astronaut, athletes, models, etc., who contributed some of the recipes--not a food shot amongthem. You may love Tony Lama's boots, but is his head shot the bestillustration for a recipe for Green Chile Rice Casserole? Despite thelack of food photos, this is a very useful book if you're trying tofollow the pyramid and need some fresh and tasty recipes. --JoanPrice ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Recipes include cancer-causing foods!
This book includes CHARBROILING beef! What utter nonsense. There is no warning about the cancer-causing aspects of meat or charring flesh.I would never trust anything the American Cancer Society says. They are very biased in favor of expensive pharmaceuticals with cancer-causing side-effects. They are the wealthiest "charity" in America, with cash reserves of $1 Billion.

The Role of the ACS in the War Against Cancer

The verdict is unassailable. The American Cancer Society bears a major responsibility for losing the winnable war against cancer.
The launching of the 1971 War Against Cancer provided the ACS with a well-exploited opportunity to pursue it own myopic and self-interested agenda. Its strategies remain based on two lies -- that there has been dramatic progress in the treatment and cure of cancer, and that any increase in the incidence and mortality of cancer is due to aging of the population and smoking while denying any significant role for involuntary exposures to industrial carcinogens in air, water, consumer products and the workplace.

Most of the funds raised by ACS go to pay overhead, salaries, fringe benefits, and travel expenses of its national executives in Atlanta. They also go to pay Chief Executive Officers, who earn six-figure salaries in several states, and the hundreds of other employees who work out of some 3,000 regional offices nationwide. The typical ACS affiliate, which helps raise the money for the national office, spends more than 52 percent of its budget on salaries, pensions, fringe benefits, and overhead for its own employees.

Salaries and overhead for most ACS affiliates also exceeded 50 percent, although most direct community services are handled by unpaid volunteers. DiLorenzo summed up his findings by emphasizing the hoarding of funds by the ACS.

"Most contributors believe their donations are being used to fight cancer, not to accumulate financial reserves. More progress in the war against cancer would be made if they would divest some of their real estate holdings and use the proceeds -- as well as a portion of their cash reserves -- to provide more cancer services."

Aside from high salaries and overhead, most of what is left of the ACS budget goes to basic research and research into profitable, patented cancer drugs.

The current budget of the ACS is $380 million and its cash reserves approach one billion dollars. Yet its aggressive fund-raising campaign continues to plead poverty, and lament the lack of available money for cancer research, while ignoring efforts to prevent cancer by phasing out avoidable exposures to environmental and occupational carcinogens.

Meanwhile, the ACS is silent about its intricate relationships with the wealthy cancer drug industry and chemical industries.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Read
I just finished this book today and found it very useful. The authors presented many helpful facts and cited many credible research trials and journal articles to support their points.I did not find the book to be inflammatory or alarmist, just filled with useful, practical and illuminating tips about what women can do to lower their risk for breast cancer. I admire the book's "prevention" approach: why wait for breast cancer to appear before getting into action? So many of the book's suggestions contribute to overall health in general, it just makes good sense to follow them.

I was concerned to find out how many elevated risk factors I already have for breast cancer (some of which I already knew, first among them being my mother's death from the disease at age 43). However, this book did make me feel that there are at least some health and environmental factors I can affect with my decisions and behavior; learning of my elevated risk only invigorates my commitment to doing all that I can in an effort not to add to those risks.

The book's expose on the dangers of mammography for premenopausal women and the elevated risks of breast cancer associated with oral contraceptives was especially eye-opening to me. It is a shame that corporate interests and profit margins in this country often seem to take precedence over good health information and awareness. Read the book in an effort to gather the most information that you can about risk factors for this disease; it will be worth your time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and prophetic
I bought this book when it first came out in 1993, and everything journalist Carol Ann Rinzler said then has now become accepted by the top medical researchers.Estrogen (especially when combined with progestin) DOES cause breast cancer, and the supposed benefits of estrogens for preventing heart disease are now being hotly debated. The HERS study (the first big randomized controlled trial on women with heart disease)actually found women had more heart attacks during the first year than women not on HRT. If you still have any doubt that estrogen causes breast cancer, READ THIS BOOK.Only when we're fully informed can women make clear-headed decisions about whether or not to take estrogen drugs for the rest of our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good case re estrogen causing increase in breast cancer
An good example of, I have no conflict of interest, journalism. Ms. Rinzler has done her homework. She makes a sound case for the idea that the exponential increase in Breast Cancer is mostly the result of the massive introduction of estrogen into women's lives. Birth Control Pills, Hormone Replacement Therapy, DES and more, are all clearly implicated. Why then do they continue to be sold, with ever increasing favor? Why is this being denied/ignored? Why is this just shuffled off as a factor to consider? Why has this book received so little attention? Women should read, study and meditate on this book. Take it to heart. Ask yourself these questions. A fine example of excellent journalism, well written, staight foward and easy to read ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Been there, done that!
I have had close relatives with cancer and I am a cancer survivor.I wish I had this book when my father and SIL had cancer because I didn't know exactly how to help. This is the perfect book for friends and family members who want to help but don't know how.I am one of the patients often quoted in the book so I know these comments come from the heart of the survivors who wrote them.I appreciate seeing my experience from the reader's vantage point.I also enjoyed hearing about what got other people through.None of us could have done it alone.I wish there was such a book for kids and teenagers with cancer. There needs are different and I find myself wondering how to help them uniquely because I am a school nurse.I currently have a student undergoing chemo for testicular cancer. We can relate in general but he needs kids his own age to be there and to talk to.Excellent resource.I recommend it for every place of worship, library, doctor's office and as a personal resource if you love someone with cancer.

Dr. Silver surveyed hundreds of cancer survivors from around the world and interviewed medical experts and cancer leaders during her research for What Helped Me Get Through.

What Helped Get Me Through offers guidance, emotional support, and advice to those just diagnosed with cancer and those undergoing treatment. Cancer survivors have been in the same situation, and speak their own words about survival, pointing out the small details to the major discussions of the emotional, physical, and spiritual aspects of having the disease.

What Helped Me Get Through from cover to cover:

* How to manage fear, uncertainty, and speak with your young children. (Dr. Silver had to do this herself.)
* How to explore and decide upon treatment options.
* How to take care of yourself, spiritually, physically, and emotionally.
* How to interact with your family and friends, allowing them to make a difference.
* What would have helped, but was too difficult to ask for.
* What could have helped at the time of diagnosis.

Dr. Silver also has included short lists which are invaluable:

* 5 Things You Should tell Your Partner Who Has Cancer
* 5 Things To Tell Your Children About Your Cancer
* 5 Things For a Friend To Do
* 5 Things Your Oncologist Should Tell You
* 10 Tips to Help Children and Families

A personal sample: "I was my own worst enemy, and I found myself living on the computer, looking for the worst news possible.I cured that by going to work...it really helped the depression and getting back into a normal life.--Kathie, nurse and social worker, diagnosed with kidney cancer at age 53 in 2005 in Kingston, New York."

There are many survivors who participated in What Helped Get Me Through, including famous names, that are out on the front lines supporting cancer research today. You'll recognize Lance Armstrong, Carly Simon, Scott Hamilton, Sharon Osbourne, Susan Vreeland, Elyse Caplan, retired Senator Edward W. Brooke, Lynn Eib, Hester Hill Schnipper, among many many others. Cancer knows no limits of age, race, gender, nor economic position. We are all affected, as What Helped Get Me Through testifies to.

On a personal note, I walked into the emergency room to hear my own father's diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. We needed this book then. What Helped Me Get Through will encourage many families through diagnosis and treatment, offering hope. Sometimes those days are dark, but there is always hope.

Product Description

Dietary Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids and Cancer provides all the latest information on the possible benefits of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) against a wide series of cancers.

Several influential scientists in this field have contributed to make this book unique amongst the others published so far in this field. The chapters give detailed information about the results obtained in this field through experimental studies conducted on both animals and cultured cells, as well as through human intervention trials and epidemiological observational studies. This book represents an important tool for researchers working in nutrition and oncology, since it collects all the knowledge about omega-3 PUFAs and cancer, even the most recent, in a single publication. For the first time controversies among the different studies are also covered with great detail in this book.

The book enables physicians to clearly understand on a scientific basis if their oncologic patients or patients at risk of cancer could actually benefit from a diet enriched in omega-3 PUFAs or from a dietary supplementation with these fatty acids. The book represents also a good resource for ordinary individuals as well as cancer patients to learn more about omega-3 PUFAs and understand how these dietary components may affect cancer growth.

5-0 out of 5 stars SO MUCH INFORMATION......A BOOK WORTH THE MONEY
HAVE READ 15 BOOKS AND COULD HAVE SKIPPED 14 OF THEM.THIS ONE HAS SO MUCH IN IT THAT IS VALUABLE TO A PERSON DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER.
A BOOK WORTH THE MONEY.

4-0 out of 5 stars The not just for cancer cookbook
this book offers healthy dishes for cancer patients. The helpful information on the value of the certain foods for specific ailments offers comfort when preparing for a cancer patient.I can't help noticing that these well-balanced offerings can be good for anyone, especially if gaining or losing weight is an objective. So I'm pleased to have this cookbook to help out my friend, and it may benefit my chubby self as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cancer Lifeline Cookbook
This book is great, it has answers to a lot of questions I had after I found out I had cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent choice - good gift
I've bought multiple copies of this, first for myself (spouse is a cancer patient) and then for friends who have cancer or cook for a patient. Great photos make the food look wonderful. Good recipes, good tips. My only hesitation is that you can't get all the ingredients in our small town grocery stores.
The sweet potato fries alone are worth the price of the book at the "used" price - all of mine have been less than half the marked price and only one was actually used, lightly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delicious and Nutritious
I purchased this cookbook because I was recently diagnosed with a pre-cancerous condition.I was pleasantly surprised to discover that every recipe in this cookbook that I've tried so far has been delicious and very easy to prepare. The highlights tried so far:Blueberry Breakfast Cake, Banana Bran Muffins, Baked Sweet Potato Fries, Spicy Miso Peanut Noodles, Cottage-Style Mac and Cheese.Looking forward to trying Thai Chicken Soup and Cool as a Cucumber Dressing. All the recipes are chock full of anti-oxidant foods and are prepared with optimum nutrition in mind.I used to equate healthy eating with bland food, but not any more! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Informative with abfab recipes after the research
I was looking for a book written by a guest on Oprah, but when I found the book, it was nothing like the author had described on the show.I kept looking because I wanted to extend and improve my terminal hubby's life.

This book extended his life by 5 months. He enjoyed all the recipes I made from this book (even though he said he wouldn't eat some of the recipes when he read the ingredients, he gobbled it down when it was made). You can select recipes by meal, and some are so easy a child could make it, and others really require a spice mill and a mandoline. Some take a lot of prep with short cooking times, and others are dead easy. All can be made in an hour if memory serves me, and I have made some of the meals for guests, and they think I am a cordon bleu chef after tatsting it.

The authors researched all types of food and found which food and spices fight cancer, made a list and presented it to the top chefs in Quebec, and told them to make recipes using the ingredients on the list.

And, you can't fault them because they tell you to eat 70% or higher chocolate every day, and that will make any day a bit brighter.

This book is also very good if you don't use spices a lot.The recipes will show you what goes with what.

I have given this book as gifts to friends, and wouldn't part with my copy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than Useless
I am amazed that this book was even written by the same authors as the excellent "Foods to Fight Cancer". The first half of the book does have some very useful information but starting with the very first recipe things go downhill quickly. The first four ingredients (of a six ingredient recipe) are sugar, oil, eggs and white flour. These are foods that actually promote cancer - as anyone who has read the outstanding book "Anti-Cancer" will easily see. The wheat bran and blueberries that finish out these muffins cannot possibly compensate for the harm of the first four ingredients. What follows are more recipes full of sugar, oil, flour and animal products (such as cheese and beef) all of which are known to accelerate cancer growth. I love their other book but this one is likely to do more harm than good. For a much better book on cancer nutrition read "The Cancer Survivors Guide" by Neal Barnard and Jennifer K. Reilly or "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell PhD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Surprised!
I am a big fan of Dr. Beilveau ... but I was very surprised to see recipes that include sugar. It appears that the recipes were not reviewed in detail.I plan to try many of the recipes included -- but the sugar thing really surprised.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice looking, difficult to USE
I would have liked to give this book 5 stars, but it has serious flaws for a cook book.I have read Anti-Cancer, the book on which these recipes are based.A whole half of this book is dedicated to reiterating what foods can fight cancer. The second half is the "cookbook".The major problem with the ease of use of the cookbook is that the index is useless!Browsing through the recipes, I noticed at least 4 recipes that feature lentils. When I was ready to make some Lentil and Carrot Soup, I open the book's index to find the recipe. In the index, Lentil is not listed.Nor is Carrot.Nor Soup! Now I've got to flip through the beautiful photos and other recipes hoping to come across the one I want. That's a disappointment. The editor of this book needs a different job.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous
This is a beautiful book with a lot of important information and excellent recipes.I was a little disappointed with the index. If you're looking for a recipe for a specific ingredient, it gives a list of page numbers, but leaves out the recipe that will be found on those pages. So you have to look up each one - too tedious. If you are interested in this topic, I highly recommend Anticancer: A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schrieber.No recipes in that one, but an excellent user-friendly readable review of the science behind diet & lifestyle changes which will help prevent cancer or cancer relapse. ... Product Description
The Cancer Monologue Project is a collection of thirty monologues developed in workshops in which people affected by cancer are invited to write and perform their stories about living with the disease. These workshops were led by Tanya Taylor and Pamela Thompson, who both know firsthand the profound effects cancer can have on individuals and their families.

These monologues are about reawakened desire, dreams of flight and finding humor in the most unlikely places. Like letters from the frontlines, they capture the glory and darkness of life. Each voice is unique, and yet each one touches upon the universal in portraying lives that have taken unexpected turns. Together they are a tribute to the diversity of the cancer community and to the strength of the human heart. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Cancer and Intimacy
I have known a number of people with cancer, and I think I had close relationships with them. However, somehow I learned more about what really happens when people get cancer from this book than I have learned from suffering friends and family. The reality is so grave that I suppose the people I know did not want to bring me in to the pain. But the participants in these workshops feel free to unburden themselves and get specific and I have a more real view of the cancer experience now than I did before. The scathing and lonely vignettes about radiation really got to me, and while it's painful it's also better to know than not to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Triumph of the spirit.
When I read The Cancer Monologue Project, I made 30 new friends; each with their own very individual voice and outlook. They share a gruesome commonality, cancer, but something even stronger unites them. What I found most enlightening was the gratitude these survivors expressed for the very disease that brought them, or a loved one, to death's door.Wisdom, humility, and a deep appreciation for family seem to be the legacy of the pain, fear and degradation they endured. In celebrating life, these people made me laugh through my tears as they generously shared intimate details of their journey.I can't help feeling I've been given a primer on how to live my remaining years to their fullest; a gift from these extraordinary contributors.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to read, and reread, and give to everyone you love.

5-0 out of 5 stars exceptional book
I purchased this book as a gift for an uncle who has just been operated on for colon cancer after reading about it in the Oprah Winfrey magazine which she highly reccomended. After leafing through a story or two I wound up reading it cover to cover on the weekend before mailing it out.It really is an exceptionally moving work and will inspire anyone that reads it whether they have been touched by the disease, know someone who has (as we all have)or just needs to be reminded how precious life really is.I cannot wait to see what the authors bring us in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating
The authors didn't have to put themselves in others shoes to to convey these enormously brave and inspirational accounts. The authors in their own shoes, brilliantly edited, make this book a must for anyone directly and indirectly faced with cancer's devistation. ... Read more
