Product Description
Since the now ubiquitous LIVESTRONG™ wristbands became available in May 2004, the Lance Armstrong Foundation has raised more than $50 million for cancer survivorship programs, and the signature phrase has become a battle cry for those who fight the disease every day.

Now, the Lance Armstrong Foundation has compiled, from hours of videotaped interviews, poignant and dramatic personal accounts from cancer survivors. Covering a wide range of subjects, from grief to spousal relationships, employment discrimination to coping with medical bills, infertility to fear of recurrence, survivors share their experiences and speak candidly about how cancer has impacted their lives. For twenty-four-year-old Amy it’s how her illness changed her relationship with her parents. Mike, a male survivor of breast cancer, talks about gender stereotypes and genetic testing. And Eric, the father of a five-year-old survivor of a brain tumor, recalls how friends and strangers helped his family with financial issues and how the experience brought him and his wife closer together.

While heartbreaking at times, these powerfully honest stories are ultimately uplifting and extremely reassuring to patients and their families. They offer the wisdom and hope that only survivors can give. LiveStrong is a remarkable testament to the resilience of the human spirit.

From the introduction by Lance Armstrong:

My work with the LAF shows me daily that sharing our stories and learning from one another’s experiences helps us cancer survivors continue to survive. Some people think the cancer experience is only about the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, as if after the disease goes into remission, it no longer exists. But survivorship goes beyond remission.Survivorship is an evolution. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good read
It is very important for survivors to hear the stories of others who have been down the same road. This book is like going to a really good support group, plus it benefits a great organization.

5-0 out of 5 stars High Praises to Livestrong ...
Being a recent cancer victim/survivor myself, I found this to be inspiring and is helping to reaffirm that I'm not alone out there and that there's nothing wrong with me.It just happened, for whatever reason.Livestrong is a must read for anyone who either has or knows someone who has cancer ... it'll help you get through the bumps along the road.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up by the Author of North Pond Dawn
Live Strong: Inspirational Stories from Cancer Survivors - From Diagnosis to Treatment and Beyond by the Lance Armstrong Foundation is a powerful new book that is a must read for anyone - whether they have been impacted by cancer or not.

The book is a collection of stories told by twenty-six people on a terrifying roller coaster that is out of control ... they have been diagnosed with serious life-changing cancer. But they all have hope and they all develop the inner strength to continue their lives with the drastic changes that cancer forces upon them.

The people are unforgettable ...

- the college senior who found out in her last semester ... just when she was ready to start a wonderful and exciting life journey - now bravely struggling withfeelings of isolation while working to raise money for other cancer survivors.

- the cancer doctor who got cancer himself, played with his kids, wound up with a divorce, and eventually returned to work with a new understanding of what his patients are experiencing.

- the twenty-four year old woman whose basketball career ended when she was diagnosed in eighth grade.

- the teenage boy who struggled through a cancer-filled`coming of age' period unlike any other but who has now found some peace and even has a girlfriend.

- the Asian woman who became distraught because she knew something was wrong inside - and who eventually had to force her doctors to figure out that she had cancer.

- the father of four who became a cancer survivor when his five year old son was diagnosed then became blind and now is learning Braille.

- the forty-five year old woman who calmly, almost light-heartedly wonders if she will expire before her credit card does.

The stories are remarkable, told simply in the words of real people, not professional authors. The book is certainly a monument to hope and optimism and living strong.

But there is something deeper about this book, both more disturbing and more profound, that I can not quite put my finger on.Perhaps it is because I am reading Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking, an extraordinary journey with her during her year-long reaction to her husband's sudden death. It is becoming clearer to me that the survivors in Live Strong are really describing the heart-wrenching emotional grieving process that they struggled through.Someone has died and it is them - the other life, without cancer, that they will never have. And there is such difficulty in letting go.

Read this book.It is much deeper than inspiration. By David Roddy,Cancer Survivor and Author of North Pond Dawn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight from those who know how it feels.
I was drawn to the book when I saw the familiar yellow LIVE STRONG wristband.Upon reading, I was relieved to realize that this book is one full of hope, not despair, sadness and pain. These are the stories of real people who have had or do have real cancer. The book is invaluable because it comes from those people who know what having cancer feels like. These aren't the words of doctors or nurses or other health care professionals. These are the words from people who know. ... Amazon.com Review
At age 51, Peter Teeley, former press secretary to GeorgeBush, was given a 50-50 chance of surviving his stage III coloncancer.Like most newly diagnosed cancer patients, he knew littleabout the disease and less about possible treatments. He tenaciouslysought out information and saved his own life. Now he and medicalwriter Philip Bashe spare others from having to start their own cancertreatment investigation from scratch.

"When faced with the mostcritical consumer decision of their lives, the majority of cancerpatients accept without question the recommendation of the doctor whodiagnosed the disease," write the authors. "Eighty-five percent of thetime, that person is not an oncologist, a specialist in thedetection and treatment of cancer." This leads to a substantial risk ofsubstandard care, according to the National Cancer Policy Board.

The solution? Take charge, with the help of the comprehensiveinformation here. Learn all you can about your disease, its stagingand treatments (25 different cancers are covered here). Seek outclinical trials. Get an independent second opinion. Investigatecancer-treatment facilities. Learn about medications for pain andnausea. Learn how dietary changes, stress management, and supportservices can help you. Make your medical insurance work foryou. There's an immense amount of practical, clearly written,well-organized, illustrated information in this book, and it'senhanced by anecdotes from Teeley's personal story. Everything youneed is here: lists of top cancer centers and support groups (withphone numbers and Web sites), definitions of all terms, instructivecharts and boxes, questions to ask, questions you're likely to beasked, and a ton of information about how you can help yourself.

I am a cancer patient and this is the book I have been looking for.Encyclopedic yet concise and to the point, Teeley's treatment of strategies, treatment options and the biology of cancer sets a highstandard.Useful summary boxes are distributed throughout each chapter, allowing the reader to get a quick overview of such topics as "MedicalTerms You're Likely to Hear" / "Surgical Procedures" /"Drug Therapies" and related topics.

I found chapter 6 (Stateof the Art: Your Treatment Options) and Chapter 9 (Don't Neglect YourEmotional Health) especially useful...but EACH chapter is stuffed withinformation vital to an understanding of how to cope with cancer in theyear 2000.This book does not have a dated or stale feel; the medicalinformation is current. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book will leave you with a profound feeling of hope.
If the issue of cancer has forced its way into your life, you will understand that dispair seems to be inevitable after hearing those terrifying words:that you or a loved one has cancer. However, uponreading the words found in this book, the trying times to come are madeless frightening.Because of a lack of knowledge about cancer, we may beintimidated by the idea of bone marrow aspirations, chemotherapy, and themany potentially humiliating aspects of treatment. However, Silver Liningshelps put this experience into a more positive light.I know I found themto be incredibly comforting. We all know there are so many people who arebattling this disease, but they are often unrepresented, and with this bookcomes the ability to be encouraged by their successes. Also comes theknowledge that, should the war be lost, there is a way for the survivors togrow and flourish.

5-0 out of 5 stars island of peace
The overly lavish illustrations in this book - angels, radiant suns, hearts, butterflies, bluebirds and endless flowers containing human faces -spill over the pages and threaten to blot out the text. I began to wonderif there was going to be any beef in the sandwich or just lotsa lettuce. But this collection of stories, insights, poetry and advice from cancersurvivors and their oncology nurses (put together by two obviously verydedicated oncology nurses) does deliver the goods ifyou're looking forcertain answers. One - does anyone really survive long-term the scariercancers? -e.g. ovarian, melanoma.Apparently so!The voices of quite afew such survivors are heard in this book. Two -given that one might notbe able to join these long-termers, what can be redeemed in the time left? Apparently everything that really matters. One's humanity, one'sconnectedness to others, one's experience of god. For anyone exhausted bycancer anxiety, this book is a place to retreat, a little island of peace. Will appeal to: Thoseof the more spiritual-Christianlook-on-the-bright-side frame of mind, ready to reach out to others andshare their experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars 150 people who "have been there" share their experience.
Captures the deepest inner souls of those facing serious illness.Engrossing stories describe a remarkable commonality in multitudinous personal approaches to a deeper realization of self and the relationship of ones own essence to the totality of life and death. 5-0 out of 5 stars Post bc treatment must read
This wonderful little book hadn't been published when I finished treatment. It would have been so helpful during that post treatment time when I struggled so hard to return to normal - then, eventually, realized that there was no going back - I was different now and needed to find my "new" normal.

1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointed
I received this book yesterday and am returning it today. It seems to simply list fears (in question format) then state that they will be fears and that there is a basis for fear. So, this book will validate that fear exists, even after treatment. However, this book has a very negative focus. Frankly, it was more unsettling- creating fears I didn't have. While I wasn't looking for a book that was "life is just fine now", I don't need any book to stir up fear and a feeling of helplessness. There was also a whole chapter on "troubling words of "cure and "survivor"... this chapter seemed to be more that the author had an ax to grind, apparently judging people who would use these words as part of their own psychological recovery as being polly-anna or misinformed. She even takes a blast at the "pink ribbon" information as too upbeat. Gosh I guess she just wants to make sure that you stay emotionally fragile, but now you can cite reasons to be! Forget it. I don't need more negativity or fear in my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Praise for After Breast Cancer
The author of this book is a 14-year breast cancer survivor (at the time of publication.) Musa Mayer was a counselor in the Ohio Community Mental Health system, with a specialty in women's issues. The professional background, plus her personal experience, lends itself to specific knowledge to be an advocate for those facing breast cancer and its after effects. The author suspects that society encourages women to get on with their lives like before cancer, when in fact that is a faulty expectation. There is no going back to life as it was before cancer, because cancer shifts the foundation on which patients stand. Instead, survivors must build supports for a strong life after cancer. Mayer tells readers how to do that, and why it is necessary for post-cancer well-being.

Mayer incorporates the experiences of 40 other women. The women share their thoughts and feelings about what happens after surgery and other cancer treatments are over. The book clearly addresses the concerns of women worrying about recurrence and/or metastatic breast cancer. "This book takes the position that for women diagnosed with breast cancer, coming to terms in a direct way with the fear of recurrence can become a crucial part of the recovery process."

For the two million women in the United States who will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, the recovery process is no easy task. The impact that cancer has on the patient, her family and friends, is profound. Mayer divides the issues of recovery into eight chapters, which include informational and emotional content. What determines a cure? What defines a survivor? What medical tests should a survivor have? What symptoms would a survivor experience? What fears are "normal?" How does a survivor experience a "new normal?" According to Mayer, survivors must "discover what is normal for us now." In addition, Mayer explains the importance of support, and encourages survivors to seek support groups. She also includes an extensive resource guide. For those seeking a holistic approach to life after cancer, the area that is lacking in this book is a chapter on spirituality.
After Breast Cancer is a one-of-a-kind book that should be in of every survivor's library for resources and reassurance.
review by Lynn C. Tolson

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read after a breast cancer diagnosis
I purchased, After Breast Cancer: Answers to the Questions You're Afraid to Ask, for a friend of mine who was diagnosed with primary breast cancer two years ago. Before giving my friend the book, I read it, so I would not be suggesting a book that might "scare" her.Having metastatic breast cancer myself, I found myself wishing I would have had such a resource after my initial diagnosis. The book is extremely well-written and addresses all of the key issues of dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis. It's educational and offers the patient a "take-charge" mentality of a breast cancer diganosis. This book is a "must read" for women (and men) who are dealing with or have dealt with breast cancer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for anyone just finishing treatment
Although I had heard from others that finishing treatment can be unexpectedly hard, it still came as a surprise. I have held it together pretty well, I think, through everything that had happened to me (diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer whilst pregnant). But I really did lose the plot a bit for a while, when it had all finished. This book has helped tremendously. It is a MUST for anyone just finishing treatment. Really wonderful ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nordie's at Noon - Excellent read
This book offers excellent insight into the cancer patient's feelings. I went through 5 years of breast cancer treatment with my best friend and this book helped me understand a lot of what my friend went through. She kept a lot to herself, always had a positive attitude toward her survival but I didn't always know what she was feeling. I highly recommend reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth hurts...
Confession time:I'm the Melanie whom Patti drove to St. Louis to see, and I also met Kim during my time in the sorority.I didn't know 75% of the people or events mentioned in this book, to my regret.During my first reading, I felt almost hostile: Who were these people? When did this happen? Why didn't I know about this?I even thought I recognized my wedding as the one Patti felt uneasy about during the section about choosing to be postive in the short time we have.Everyone projects their own insecurities, and after the second and third readings, I came to realize that I was angry with myself for allowing my own fear to limit my interactions with Patti.Sure, I had the excuses of distance, a young son and a full-time job, but the truth was that it was easier to pretend that I had been supportive and loving when I was truly just shielding myself.I encourage everyone to take a hard look at what it means to be "supportive".I wish I had.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tearjerker Novel
This book was amazing. It is the story of four women in their fight against breast cancer.I couldn't put it down.I didn't want it to end. This book is not just about breast cancer. It inspires you to enjoy and appreciate life.I know a few women who have battled breast cancer and it made me feel closer to them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
This is a fantastic book for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer. It is written by a BC surgeon who discovered she herself had BC. It's very readable for the lay person. Buy this for youself or give as a gift to someone you know who is probably frightened and overwhelmed after being diagnosed. I shipped this to a friend and she was so grateful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant book
Having been diagnosed with breast cancer this book was recommended to me by another friend who had breast cancer. This is the most thorough and informational book on this subject. I would highly recommend to any
woman diagnosed with breast cancer. Easy to understand and covers absolutely everything you would not think of on your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great comprehensive book
This book was handed to me by a friend a few days after my diagnosis four years ago. I still refer to it from time to time, and always send it to friends when they are newly diagnosed.

It's comprehensive, straightforward, and not alarmist.Though it has personal stories in it, it is not sentimental or preachy.

It sets the right tone for a disease that is scary, but definitely survivable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living Through Breast Cancer
I also purchased this book the day after being diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. I remember how nervous I was bringing this to the counter at the book store. I wanted something that would walk me 'through' breast cancer not just survive it.

This book is excellent and covers what all those websites cover in easy to understand terms with hope not doom and gloom.

I suggest this to all who are diagnosed or who have a friend facing this journery.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE book to have when you have breast cancer!
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is, or wants to support someone who is, living through breast cancer.

I bought this book the day after I was diagnosed with breast cancer.I wanted a book that was the equivalent of the "What to Expect" books written for expectant and new parents. This book completely fit the bill.Dr. Kaelin's explanations of the science and lingo surrounding breast cancer and treatments are thorough and accessible. She also provides information about how you'll feel during and after surgery and treatment, what you'll need to have on hand to support your healing, and how to manage the side effects of treatment.

One of my favorite things about the book is that information regarding lumpectomy and mastectomy is separated, as is information regarding radiation therapy and chemotherapy.I really appreciated this, as I was having difficulty reading the websites that covered all this information all together--it was too scary.Having this information separated made it possible for me to read only what applies to my own situation, but I also know that I have the other information if I should need it.

The other great thing about this book is that the language is very carefully chosen to avoid references to struggling and fighting, but focuses instead on coping and living as well as you can during and after surgery and treatment. This positive approach is calming and reassuring to me.

Product Description
It isn't just a woman's disease: few men stop to consider it, but one in a thousand males contracts breast cancer.

Saving Jack is a moving first-person account of a man's experience with breast cancer. In a tale of challenge and adversity, Jack Willis relates his personal experience, from first feeling a pea-sized nodule in his breast to being diagnosed, from mastectomy and chemotherapy treatments to positive prognosis. And in telling candidly of his struggles, he conveys his renewed appreciation of life.

While there is no shortage of books devoted to helping women with breast cancer, this is the first to address the apprehensions faced by men who contract the disease. As he describes the physical and emotional roller coaster on which he suddenly found himself, Willis shares with readers--especially other new cancer victims--some of the things he and his family didn't know about cancer when he was diagnosed.

In a compelling story of faith, fear, and sometimes just getting through one long day of chemo, Willis shows that cancer is a family disease, affecting spouses and children as well as victims. For anyone whose family has been devastated by this frightening diagnosis, Saving Jack offers a ray of hope--and for men who face this unexpected disease, it offers a much needed source of strength. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Saving Jack: A Man's Struggle With Breast Cancer
My husband was diagnosed with Breast Cancer in March of this year. Saving Jack was the only book I could find on men having this disease. The book is very informative. It was comforting to read what would happen to my husband. My husband experienced almost everything Jack did. Thank you for having this book available for cancer patients.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super book!
I absolutely loved this book. I was in the library, and I was just randomly looking at a book to read, and this popped out. When I was in high school, our principal wanted to educate EVERYBODY about breast cancer. All the girls were uncomfortable with the fact that guys were in the room, but many of us had no idea it could happen to guys also. The male students needed to learn that it could happen to them too. In fact, we had a male student that had breast cancer himself which is very rare. Anyhow... every male should read this book in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars An unusual first-person account of a man's experience of a disease normally associated with women
SAVING JACK: A MAN'S STRUGGLE WITH BREAST CANCER provides an unusual first-person account of a man's experience of a disease normally associated with women. From being diagnosed to having a mastectomy and chemo, this provides the first book to address the issues of men who suffer from the disease. Health care and public libraries need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A True Comfort
Saving Jack is THE book to read if you or a loved one has cancer.Although it covers the author's personal experience with one type of cancer, breast cancer in a male of all things, the lessons learned are invaluable. It is a personal, first person account by a brilliant, funny and often poignant man who takes you on the roller coaster of the cancer patient's inner world. This is an excellent read for those who treat cancer patients and their families. This book is engaging from beginning to end, and I too, read it straight through! It is the best book of this area for demystifying some very scary issues on a personal level. If life hands you lemons, this is the gourmet recipe for lemonade. This book had an unexpected effect on this reviewer on the most visceral level. It was comforting.Never saw that coming.

5-0 out of 5 stars Successful ancer tabilization experiement based on this book
In January, 2009, my 84 year old mother was diagnosed with a localized, stage 1 lung cancer that was treated with targeted radiation. The tumor was not eradicated but it shrank from 5 cm to 2 cm and PET scans showed a low SUV (measure of cancer activity.)

In April, 2010, the PET scan showed that the primary tumor had not grown, but that there was a new small tumor, and the SUV measure (measures degree of cancer activity) was high. Her oncologist chose not to treat but to monitor.

This was the perfect opportunity to implement Dr. Blaylock's recommendations, along with those of Dr. David Servan-Schreiber (his book is entitled Anticancer)to see if the cancer could be stablized by supplements and nutrition alone.I'm happy to report that my mother's next PET scan four months later showed stabilization of tumor, no further growth, along with reduction of SUV measure from 10.2 to 7.3.

I whole heartedly believe in Dr. Blaylock's philosophy of cancer treatment, which is combining conventional and alternative treatments.During my mother's radiation treatment, I also implemented Dr. Blaylocks protocol, which was aimed at enhancing the effects of radiation while protecting other tissues.

Be forewarned, however, the Dr. Blaylock's book is not well organized. The chapters on protocols for specific treatment (i.e. what do do if receiving chemotherapy or radiation) are pretty straightforward but the rest of the book is not.It is impossible to follow his recommendations 100%, or else you would be taking so many supplements that you would have no room for food.It takes careful study and decision making on your part.

But I give the book five stars because I believe it is prolonging my mother's life and enhancing the quality of her life.

5-0 out of 5 stars You need this book
This is an excellent book for those who are willing to believe your body functions on what you feed it.If you have cancer or know someone who does give them a fighting chance with or without chemo. This book is well written with enough information to help you understand the chemo process as well as the cancer process plus the sources to obtain high grade supplements which the body will actually absorb.Cancer doctors do not entertain the possibility that supplements and food can make your cancer go away or become less active yet there is ample studies to support it.Pharmaceutical companies would never benefit from it so they aren't about to jump on this band wagon regardless of positive results.Buy it.Read it.Do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome information!!!!
I would have to say that this is the most important book I have ever read, in terms of valuable information. It is not only for cancer patients, but a wealth of information on how to prevent cancer. Because contrary to popular belief, doctors cannot cure cancer, only manage it. So, it's vitally important for people to know what they can do to prevent cancer. It is especially important for women, as it talks about the harm that can come from yearly mammograms. The information I learned in this book was astounding, alarming, and impowering!Cancer is not pretty, and it's not cheap, so be proactive and take charge of your health! I wish I had this book before I was diagnosed with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Strategies for Cancer Patients
Although I haven't read the entire book, I have found useful tips and strategies not only for cancer patients, but for the entire family. My main interest in this book was on foods that are nutritious and likely to improve health. The book is written by a doctor and is well researched and footnoted.

5-0 out of 5 stars Susan R. Rabinowitz, author of "No Evidence of Disease"
What do you do when you are diagnosed with cancer a second time? That happened to me and I wanted answers. Was I doing something wrong to cause cancer cells to grow in my body? I needed answers. While at Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa, the mother of a young patient told me about this book. She got my attention because another woman had been teaching us about excitotoxins from another of Dr. Blaylock's books. I immediately ordered this book and am glad I did.
Dr. Blaylock explains how cancer develops in your body. He suggests which foods encourage the growth of cancer and which foods inhibit cancer in the first place. He also goes into detail about supplements, including why to take them, how much to take, and what form to take them in. This book has become my so called "bible" for taking supplements.
I was very encouraged to read Suzanne Somer's book, "Knockout" because Dr. Blaylock is one of the doctors she interviewed. Through my search for Dr. Blaylock, I came across Jigsaw Health, where I now buy my supplements.
My oncologist told me, NED" - No Evidence of Disaese - and I plan to keep it that way! I got my answers in this book and I highly recommend it to you.Knockout: Interviews with Doctors Who Are Curing Cancer--And How to Prevent Getting It in the First PlaceJigsaw Complete ... Read more

Product Description
The Journey Through Cancer is an essential guide for all cancer patients, their families, and their loved ones. As a board-certified oncologist, with more than ten years of experience serving as physician, guide, mentor, coach, and friend to thousands of cancer patients and their families, Dr. Jeremy Geffen has learned how cancer often challenges the mind, heart, and spirit of patients and their families as deeply --- if not more deeply --- than it challenges the physical body. Yet this simple truth is often overlooked by Western medicine as it aggressively pursues the best ways to diagnose and treat cancer. Too often physicians focus almost exclusively on the physical dimensions of the disease, rather than caring for the whole person who has the disease. Dr. Geffen presents a groundbreaking seven-level program, used at his cancer center in Florida, that addresses every dimension of the person with cancer--physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual:

Education and Information, giving patients answers to questions about their disease and their treatment options.
Psychosocial Support, focusing on the need for and benefits of a strong support network.
The Body as Garden, exploring the vast array of alternative and complementary therapies.
Emotional Healing, helping patients and families deal with the often overwhelming emotional challenges of cancer.
The Nature of Mind, exploring how patients' thoughts and beliefs profoundly influence their journey.
Life Assessment, showing patients how to discover their life's deepest meaning and purpose.
The Nature of Spirit, connecting patients to the profoundly healing spiritual aspect of life we all share.
In The Journey Through Cancer, Dr. Geffen presents a revolutionary model of healing based on the best treatments available from every culture and paradigm of medicine, one that respects and explores every possible avenue and resource for healing and transformation, blending East and West, body and mind, heart and technology, science and spirit. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a must-read for cancer patients and loved ones
When I was a happy and healthy 39 years old, I abruptly became the first cancer patient I'd known, with a stage III colorectal cancer. Once diagnosed, I put together the best medical team I could. Then I found myself with many equally crucial needs for help as I entered the strange and uniquely personal terrain of my cancer experiences. How will I get through this? What does this cancer mean for my life? Journey Through Cancer provided excellent questions, stories, and tools that helped strengthen and enrich my ability to navigate through cancer. I found Journey Through Cancer at the library, and it was the sole book I found that understood that cancer patients need more than prescriptions for treatment, diet and attitude. Journey Through Cancer coaches readers through a process of discovering their own best responses to the unique impacts of cancer on our lives. For cancer patients and their loved ones, this is a must-read book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, compelling reading
My father is recovering from his second brain surgery in two months, and will soon begin adjuvant radiation and/or chemotherapy. I've been looking for information for him on what he can do to help the healing process from the inside. I recently checked this book out from my local library along with five others. I returned the other four, and haven't put this one down.

Brimming with inspiring stories of actual patients, facts on cancer types and treatments, overviews of alternative therapies, and many references to other books, tapes and organizations which may help you on the "journey through cancer." I know our family will be referring to this book often, throughout the journey, wherever it leads.

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece
Dr. Geffen's book, A Journey through Cancer, was a revelation to me, because it showed me how MY participation in the healing process was vital to the outcome of the cancerous condition that had arisen in my body.Good as the doctors and nurses were, I soon discovered that they were most willing to treat my symptoms, that is the outer reality, but there was no inclination whatsoever to address the inner reality, that is the spiritual and emotional aspects of the patient. In most oncology centers, as far as I can see, the holistic approach is practically unknown, to all intents and purposes.

Dr. Geffen explains the basics of the disease and the treatments in very clear terms, so that we are aware of the various processes. These explanations were very helpful to me when asking questions of the doctors and nurses.

I learned from Dr.Geffen that true healing can only come from within ourselves, once we have been able to overcome our fears and denials, once we have reversed our tendencies to repress and withhold, and to view, or feel, that treatments are ordeals to be borne, instead of envisaging our whole being as coming into action in tandem with the treatments. In "The Hound of Heaven", the poet Francis Thomson says: "Fear wist not to evade as Love wist to pursue" - in order to heal, our goal should be to replace fear with love, and Dr.Geffen illustrates this in a singularly illuminating way.

One of Dr.Geffen's most compelling concepts is that of transformation: we are not at war, we are not trying to kill or destroy anything, our wish is to bring harmony throughout our bodies. There is intelligence in all our cells, and our wish is to make all of them aware of their inherent power for wellbeing and joy.

A Journey through Cancer is a masterpiece of a rare order: it is imbued with knowledge, kindness, understanding, and above all it shows that the path of healing, and eventually of being, is through consciousness.

Product Description
This volume includes the contributions presented at theSecondInternational Symposium on Nutrition and Cancer. During thisConference, experts from different disciplines faced pivotal andtimely questions on the interactions between human nutrition and thedevelopment of malignancies. The major scientific advancements in the last six years derive fromthe extensive use of molecular approaches to perform research in thenutritional field. Moreover, the fundamental observation of R. Dolland R. Peto (1981), which suggested that at least 35% of all cancers(with large differences among different tumors) might be prevented bydietary regimens, has been definitively confirmed by epidemiologicalstudies. However, the relationships between diet and cancer are quite intricateand complex; it is difficult, and, not methodologically correct, toreduce them to simple terms: metabolic and hormonal factors, contaminants and biological agents, and deficiency of specificprotective nutrients are all components of the same puzzle. The molecular studies reported in this volume include all of the majoraspects of investigation on human nutrition and malignanttransformation. In the last decade a large number of compoundsresponsible for the biological activity of human foods have beenidentified and characterized. These molecules not only includeimportant and well-known risk factors but, most promising, compounds, which might exert chemopreventive activity. Among them, antioxidants(such as vitamins, phenols, and lycopene) seem to play a critical rolein reducing the risk of cancer at different anatomical sites, including colon, breast, and prostate malignancies. Other molecules, derived from fiber bacterial intestinal degradation (short fattyacids), are of interest, even if their importance has not beencompletely unravelled and is still the subject of debate. The relevance of the individual genetic background, as an independentrisk factor also in the development of diet-related cancer, opens newperspectives for molecular epidemiology. The working hypothesis isthat genetic differences in the metabolism of nutrients might resultin a different incidence of malignancies. A further development in thegenetic field is the understanding of mechanisms involved in therepair of DNA alterations. Also in this case, the occurrence ofgenetic polymorphisms might result in distinct responses to identicaldietary risk factors. A further promising advancement relates to the finding that activedietary molecules might regulate cell transduction pathways and geneexpression and, in turn, cell proliferation and differentiation. Inrecent years, the precise knowledge of the principal protein playersof cell division cycle machinery has allowed the elucidation of thegrowth biochemistry. A number of recent data suggest thatdietary-derived compounds, including radical scavengers, affect cellproliferation by acting on the cell division cycle engine and thusmight control the process (and the rate) of malignant transformation.

The above themes are described in this new volume, but the final wordon their true importance must wait until the dust of the present timehas settled. What we can anticipate is that the rapid development ofnew methodologies and the convergence of different types of approaches(molecular, epidemiological, intervention) to clarify the relationshipbetween Nutrition and Cancer will require new appraisal, withcontinuous updating, on this central aspect of human health. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must have reading!
This book is a "must have" for anyone diagnosed or caring for someone who is diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. Even though I have already had the surgery I found the book to be very helpful when discussing the disease with friends and colleagues. It takes a lot of soul searching to come up with the right course of treatment to follow. The many different experiences related here could make a difference in the way you feel or reassure you that you are on the right track. I found the detail to be very true to my experience and I only wish I had this book 4 years ago when I was diagnosed.
The one thing that I brought away from my reading was that I was not alone, and that was the major thought in my mind when the call came in from my Urologist! I urge anyone who has or supports someone who has prostate cancer to read this book!
YOU ARE NOT ALONE....
