Product Description
Kids passionately love everything about candy -- the sweet satisfying taste, of course, but also the smells, the colors, the shapes, and the textures. So, why settle for just eating it? In Candy Construction, author Sharon Bowers reveals how inexpensive and readily available store-bought candy offers an irresistible treasure-trove of crafting material.

Armed with a bedazzling variety of sugary shapes, from rolls and sticks to ropes and strips to rings and cubes, there is no limit to what kids can build -- using Candy Construction as inspiration. Imagine a chess set with Hershey's kisses playing pieces! Candy snakes made from Necco wafers, bubble-gum tape, and M&Ms for eyes! There are space ships, race cars, planes, pyramids, pirate ships, and more -- all crafted from candy.

Perfect for birthday parties and rainy day activities, the more complex Candy Construction projects offer plans for complete tabletop scenes, including a construction site with dump truck and construction workers; a stream train with an engine, tanker cars, caboose, and boxcars; and a magical castle with stacked cookie towers. There are also fun projects for holiday decorations for Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and more. Every project is accompanied by full-color photos and easy-to-follow, step-by-step building instructions.

With small children of her own, Sharon Bowers knows the challenges of preventing excessive candy consumption. To her pleasant surprise, she found that offering kids an alternative use for candy actually cut back on the eating -- without eliminating any of the fun!

Parents will welcome this creative new way of looking at candy and using it up, while watching their young construction workers put their imaginations and hands to work! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Love This Book
I received this book as a gift and I absolutely love, love, love it!I regret that I was not fortunate enough to actually purchase any of their candies when their stores where open.I'm a truffle lover and the truffles in this book, while few are absolutely excellent and extremely easy to make.We made caramel apples recently and used the caramel recipe in the book and I won't say how many of the apples I ate but I enjoyed each and every one of them.Buy this book; you will love all the recipes in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I never heard of Hazel's Candies, and I bought this book along with several others as I launched into home candymaking. This book contains kitchen-tested recipes -- very important -- that are easy enough and well-explained enough for the novice.Forget microwave fudge. This is the real deal.I just made a batch of the best fudge in the universe from this cookbook. It's enough to make me think of switching careers, or gaining 500 pounds, or both.

Some recipes call for items not usually found in a home cook's kitchen -- such as hard butter.I found everything I needed on-line at www.kitchenkrafts.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
hello everybody this is a great book its easy to read and the receipes are wonderful my favorite receipe was the fudge its to die for

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Candy Lovers Cookbook
As a resident of Washington state, I was familiar with Hazel's high quality candies and was delighted to see that a recipe book of their delicous confections was available.I recall the amazing rich flavors of their candies. This book is filled with detailed yet easy to follow recipes for just about any of Hazel's candys you wish to make.I also enjoyed reading the family story; it's like a page out of American history. This book is a real treasure and an essential addition to your cookbook library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great candy recipes
I am an amateur cook and love to make candy. I remember buying candy at Hazel's Candies when they had stores in the malls in Washington and Oregon. I was really excited to see that they had written a candy cookbook using their original recipes that they scaled down for home use.My favorites are the Victorian creams and the fudge recipes. This book tells you exactly what ingredients you will need and a step by step recipe. If you do have a problem it walks you through a list of questions and what you might have done that caused the problem.I would recommend this candy cookbook as a gift to ones self and also a gift for others for any occasion. ... I had the privilege of talking with Ms Brand through a friend that I had met online. She was so gracious to help me with some questions I had about some methods. Even retired and living in the northeast, she still has time for the novice question or two.The brown sugar butter cream fondant tastes exactly like the See's Candy Bordeaux. I now have all of her cookbooks and each one had been easy to use, well written and understandable even for a novice. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fun book that is a hit with all ages!
This is a great book for all ages. It brought back so many memories of candy that we liked as kids. It also ptresented alot of fun candy trivia. We learned something new with every turn of the page. A very easy read.

5-0 out of 5 stars How did she get such a job?
I saw Beth Kimmerle on a Food TV special about candy and thought she had an amazing job. A candy expert? How did she get such a job? Is there an opening for me? I bought her book and found it fascinating. She covers all the old school favs from Wacky wafers and Lick M Aid. The pictures are great. If you dig candy like me and wish you had her job, you'll love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for the holidays!
This book was listed by John Mariani as one of the BEST FOOD and DRINK books of 2003 and his words inspired me to buy several. What a treat it really is!

I have never seen another book about the history of American candy, and here, with "enormous affection and dogged scholarship", Beth Kimmerle provides an informative and graphically rich nostalgic food book.

The pictures are great--a real trip down memory lane. The book, along with a few handmade treats from the recipe section, will make a wonderful and unique holiday gift.

2-0 out of 5 stars Candy:The Sweet History
This book has a great cover and wonderful pictures but it seems to have missed both the editor and proofreader. The writing is also mediocre. It's nice to look at but very hard to read especially when one is attempting to make corrections during the reading process.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sweet and Sour
The Sweet:
The book is obviously well-researched, and the author's enthusiasm for the topic shines through. Each page is nicely designed and chock-full of colorful photos of vintage packages and ads. It's fun to flip through.

The Sour:
The amateurish writing style, poor editing and number of glaring typos detract from what could've been a real treat. Even a proofreader would have made a world of difference. ... Read more

Product Description
Crisscrossing her home state of North Carolina over the course of six tasty years, Foy Allen Edelman visited families in their own kitchens and communities and discovered a treasure trove of delicacies. Sweet Carolina offers the recipes for more than 220 of these confections, along with their cooks' equally flavorful reminiscences, tips, and instructions for successfully creating desserts and candies that are bound to become favorites all over again in the Old North State and beyond.

From easy apple dumplings, black walnut pound cake, Cherokee persimmon cake, and Miss Peach's sweet potato pie to lemon squares, coconut melt-away cookies, buttermilk pie, vanilla ice cream (or try the peach), old-fashioned butter mints, and five-minute fudge, this cookbook features many desserts as familiar as old friends--and some as surprising as the lazy day sonker (a deep dish pastry served with a variety of flavors, such as peach, cherry, or sweet potato). As many of the contributing cooks point out, the use of seasonal and local ingredients is prized in many of these recipes, and the range and variety of the offerings are astounding.

An invitation for home cooks of all levels of experience to get into the kitchen, this cookbook will satisfy more than the sweet tooth. From the mountains to the Piedmont to the coast, Sweet Carolina preserves a significant record of North Carolina and southern culinary traditions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For anyone longing for a bit of Carolina
A sweet tooth is something universal around the country. "Sweet Carolina: Favorite Desserts and Candies form the Old North State" is a guide to the many treats that North Carolina has developed throughout its history and has made uniquely its own. With twists on vanilla ice cream, original dishes like nutty fingers and chocolate gravy, "Sweet Carolina" is an intriguing collection that shouldn't be overlooked for anyone longing for a bit of Carolina for their cravings.

5-0 out of 5 stars How sweet it is!
This is such a sweet collection of recipes - not only the excellent collection itself, but the meaningful stories that thread throughout this compilation of dessert recipes from families across North Carolina. As much a culinary historical journey as a cookbook. It tops my list as a holiday gift for my favorite North Carolinians this year! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Traditional and unexpected recipes from all over the world
This cookbook lives up to its subtitle of 'sweet treats all year long' by providing 170 pages of recipes for candy and confections not only for American holidays but also for holidays celebrated by other cultures all over the globe. What results is a diverse selection of recipes that speak to every skill level and can be used all year round.

I am passionate about candymaking (primarily chocolate) and because of this have read many books on candymaking and own two (Making Artisan Chocolates and Chocolates and Confections: Formula, Theory, and Technique for the Artisan Confectioner) so when I pick up a new candymaking book I'm always looking for what it offers that is special and different. In comparison to those cookbooks as well as a few others that I have picked up there are a few differences. One of the biggest is how approachable this book is.It starts off with a 'How to Use This Book' section that includes everything from instructions on how to temper chocolate to definitions of the various terms used in the book. This makes it extremely user friendly for anyone who is a beginner in candymaking or who wants a reference book with some various tips. You're obviously not going to get the same level of detail as in Chocolates and Confections: Formula, Theory, and Technique for the Artisan Confectioner, but for most home cooks it will be more than enough to lead to successful candy.

Another main difference is the sheer diversity of recipes. There are many from other parts of the world I have never heard of, let alone made on my own like Chocolate Hazelnut Italian Kisses,Chestnuts in Yam Paste, Honey Walnut Candies, and Coconut Cashew Burfi. If you're only interested in traditional American recipes this may not be the book for you.But if you're interested in treats from other part of the world you will find these recipes interesting. This isn't to say there are no traditional American treats in here, as there are plenty, but international creations do get a fair amount of real estate.I imagine they would also be great for a student who has to bring in another country's food as a class project or to someone wanting to add a sweet treat to a themed dinner that features another country.

I also appreciate that this book is very easy to cook from. Each recipe is accompanied by well written directions, a picture, and some background on the recipe. The author also gives you a sense of where the recipe comes from and when it would be served. My personal favorite inclusion is that she notes the lifespan of each candy. As someone who often sends candy in care packages I much appreciate this detail that other candymaking books seem to neglect.

Overall I think this is an approachable candymaking book with enough diversity between the recipes in terms of skill level and flavors to appeal to a wide audience.I would highly recommend it to someone who is beginning candymaking and looking for a first resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Candy Book
It has a lot of great recipes, and is very easy to follow. My family loves that I have this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars book review
Great book for a candy maker.Has wonderful pictures, descriptions, recipes and tells you what can go wrong so you can correct the potential problem up-front.It is broken down by holiday.I especially like the history that comes with each recipe.

Excellent present for a chef who likes to make candy!

3-0 out of 5 stars Go to the local bookstore to preview first
There are a lot of 'easy' recipes (melt/mix and you're done), and a few completely unrealistic recipes (who can REALLY make ribbon candy at home?)

I got the book on sale, and I love collecting cookbooks, so I don't consider it money wasted, per se.But, I've only used a couple of the recipes/ideas from this book; most are a little too simple for my tastes. ... Read more
