2-0 out of 5 stars OK book for someone new to design
Honestly, I was hoping for a more insightful and comprehensive guide to becoming a designer (as the title and description imply). However, this is more like a booklet - very short with very surface-level information. Could be good for a high school student who is curious about what the profession is like, but as an informed career changer, I didn't find anything in this book that I hadn't already read on the ASID website or in other publications. But, like I said, it's a good introduction if you know very little about this field. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Case studies
An interesting book, with amazing choice of case studies.Adequate info concerning the client, place of exhibition and concept.Very nice photos and plans followed by explanations.
Would prefer, apart from mentioning some main materials, to expand more on the way they are used (ex. through one design detail per stand).

5-0 out of 5 stars An idea book on top of the line exhibits
Exhibit designers have several interesting problems. In many cases the exhibit must be mobil. It travels from trade show to trade show around the country, even around the world. Then it needs to be set up, quite possibly by people who have never seen it before, and at the end of the show the exhibit has to be torn down, usually by people who have been working at the show all day, are tired, don't care where things get put, and are ready to head to a bar.

Here is a book on exhibits by outstanding design companies from around the world. These are not the little ten foot square booths you see around the edges, but the kinds of booths you would expect from Mercedes-Benz.

Actually only about half the book is on business/trade show exhibits. The rest of the book is on more permanent structures such as information booths or museums. All in all, this is an idea book on how to do exhibits that attract attention, show off the company and the products, and create a memorable experience for the visitor. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars General help
I found this book a little too general, not specific enough, to cover the different approaches possible for a freelance designer in NYC. Didn't cover the world of placement agencies, for example.

Much of the info was forillustrators, it seemed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every aspiring freelance artist should read this book
As I am considering starting my own freelance illustration career, I found this book to be very informative. Every aspect of what you can expect to encounter in the freelance business is covered -- from dealing with people,to taxes, to how to market yourself. Lots of good tips.

Theo StephanWilliams writes in a style that is not only informative, but interestingand entertaining as well. And also encouraging, which I found to beuplifting, as the prospect of freelancing is a bit intimidating. She alsoincludes other "real world" experiences besides her own, withinterviews from several successful freelancers.

This book may not covereverything you want to know, but it is a great way to get started in yourown business of freelance design or illustration.

2-0 out of 5 stars There is nothing "streetwise"; just basic information
For a book on design and illustration, this book does not set a goodexample. The book design is bland and the information within is general. It seems that the author did not have enough information to write about andthe book mainly consists of her personal history as a designer. This bookis adequate for the novice who just wants the basics. But for thoseinterested in a in-depth look at freelance illustration, well-designed withmany highly-regarded illustrators portrayed inside, I suggest "TheBusiness of Illustration" by Heller/Fernandes. ... This book is a study of Georg Busolt (1850-1920), a noted German historianof classical Greece. The treatment is based on a collection of his ownletters, mainly written to other scholars.Over 100 letters from Busolt to others are collected and edited here. Eachletter, in the original German, is pre- sented with commentary and the wholeis woven into a chrono- logical narrative and survey of Busolt's career. Thereare four chapters (The Busolt Family; Konigsberg; Kiel, Gottingen), the lastthree corresponding to the universities where he studied and taught.Despite Busolt's eminence and the continued usefulness of his two greathandbooks (Griechische Geschichte; Griechische Staatskunde), nothing has everbeen written about him. Moreover, the narrative gives a picture of Prussianuniver- sities and academic issues during his period - a crucial one for thedevelopment of German education - and is thus a con- tribution to the historyof scholarship. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not that great
I have a feeling this author's friends may have wrote these reviews, because I've read better material in Reader's Digest.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Don't Have To Be A Submariner
Dr. Lyon's vision of submarines operating under the ice, even before nuclear-powered submarines, was remarkable, and his lifetime persistence to convince the navy to continue under ice operations was unbelievable.

I was fortunate to be aboard Pintado SSN 672 during the 1978 under ice operation with Dr. Lyon aboard. As one of Pintado's diving officers, we had to redefine our idea of shallow water since we often ran with six feet and less under the keel. Previously less than a 1000 feet under the keel was considered very shallow.

When operating under the ice in shallow water, the ship's bubble (fore and aft angle) is very critical. A very small up angle (greater than 1/8 of a degree) could cause the ship's screw to hit the ocean bottom or a very small down angle could cause the screw to hit the bottom of the ice. If you are not familiar with submarines, you might find it interesting that the young men that hold the wheels that control the submarine's depth, angle, and course are the most junior people on board.

But having Dr. Lyon onboard, a very capable ship's captain, and trust in the entire crew, made for a secure feeling and an adventure that the Pintado crew will never forget.

You don't have to be a submariner to enjoy William Leary's, Under Ice.

5-0 out of 5 stars An authoritative profile of the father of the Arctic submari
Reviewed by Capt. Gordon I. Peterson, USN (Ret.), Senior Editor, Sea Power Magazine, Navy League of the United States

It has been said that you can usually determine the caliber of a man by the amount of opposition it takesto discourage him. By this measure, William M. Leary's biography of Dr.Waldo Lyon provides an inspiring account of how one man's lifelong tenacityin the face of bureaucratic lethargy and skepticism can make a differencein translating a vision to reality.

During the early years of World WarII, Lyon began his quest for the U.S. Navy to develop an Arctic submarinefully capable of operating in one of the most challenging operationalenvironments-beneath the frozen surface of the Arctic Ocean. For 55 years,he championed--at times single-handedly--a research effort to provide theNavy with the information it would need to design a submarine that couldoperate safely and effectively in the world's most poorly understood ocean.

In the words of retired Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Frank B. KelsoII, "The nuclear submarine made Arctic operations possible, butwithout the knowledge of Waldo Lyon I doubt our Navy would have venturedunder the sea ice to the [North] Pole." Lyon's painstaking efforts toacquire this knowledge are meticulously detailed by reference to numerousinterviews with Navy submarine commanders, declassified patrol reports, andthe scientific journal that Lyon compiled for more than five decades. As aresult, Under Ice provides an authoritative and comprehensive account ofthe U.S. Navy's under-ice operations and Lyon's pioneering role in makingit possible-recognized by the President's Medal for Distinguished FederalService during the Kennedy administration.

It is noteworthy that priorto the USS Hawkbill's under-ice expedition to the Arctic in 1999, thesubmarine's commanding officer required every officer on board to readchapter seven of Leary's book--a description of USS Sargo's hazardous 1960Arctic cruise.

With the design of the Sturgeon-class during the 1960s,the Navy finally constructed nuclear-powered attack submarines with greatlyimproved under-ice capabilities.Recognition of the strategic importanceof the Arctic Ocean had reached new levels during the height of the ColdWar-because, as Lyon wrote, "The Arctic Ocean is the submariner'sprivate sea, hence, his sole capability to exploit and control."

Inhis foreword to Under Ice, Vice Adm. John H. Nicholson writes that the Navywould do well to heed Lyon's warning concerning the need to maintain arobust under-ice capability and not lose its hard-earned expertise.Unfortunately, with the retirement of the Sturgeon class of attacksubmarines and the reduction of the submarine force to 50 boats by 2003,the Navy's Arctic submarine operations will unavoidably decline in the faceof higher priority warfighting and intelligence commitments.

As thenumber of sophisticated, high-endurance conventional submarines continue toproliferate around the world, it remains to be seen if the Department ofDefense and U.S. political leadership will heed Lyon's counsel and restorethe submarine force to the numbers required to meet current and projectedoperational requirements-and sustain the U.S. Navy's Arctic preeminence. ... Product Description
During the course of an illustrious 50-year career that took him from the Bauhaus to London, Harvard University, and then New York, architect Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) generated a huge, influential, and remarkably varied body of work. Among his hundreds of buildings are such architectural triumphs as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York and the UNESCO headquarters in Paris.

This is the first comprehensive study of Breuer's architectural oeuvre. To write it, architectural historian Isabelle Hyman utilized for the first time extensive unpublished archival material and collected hundreds of photographs, plans, and sketches. While Breuer has been best known for his tubular steel chairs and other furniture designs, this book makes clear why he received dozens of architectural honors and awards and was called "a monumental figure among modern architects."

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This is the reference book on Breuer. For those who are interested to get a full scope of this under-rated architect's work, this is the book to buy. It includes a survey in phases of his career, along with a catalogue raisonne of his built and unbuilt work. The projects speak nostalgically, of that period in the 50's and 60's when good design went beyond the jargon of 'blobs' and 'smooth surfaces' and empty forms. Granted, Breuer was not immune from committing some major mistakes, such as the UNESCOor other institutional buildings that turned modernism into a bad name, but this should not discredit his whole oeuvre. This book corrects some of these misconceptions. Hyman has done a wonderful job.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biography and well researched catalogue of his works...
There are two sections in this book. It begins with the biography which takes up about 130 pages and provides with valuable behind stories. The other portion of the book is mainly dedicated to the well researched catalogue of his built and unbuilt works. The book might be worth it for the stories and for the comprehensiveness. However, personally I was hoping to see more information on each project especially if for a well known work like Whitney museum on which two photos of facade, one of lobby and a section drawing cover the whole project. In most cases, a page or two, sometimes half a page is dedicated to each project or work, which gives good impression and starting point to learn of his works but not sufficient in itself. It would have been more helpful if new color photos and redrawn drawings are included, but as I said, this is a catalogue in order to lead to further research and provoke more interests in Marcel. It is unfortunate that I was actually looking for a book which would provide me with more detailed information on his buildings and projects in this book. I haven't had a chance to peek into newer publication by Vitra museum since I am located in Asia, and I do not have an excess to public libraries or book stores to research prior to purchases, but I wish I would have taken a look at that book.
