4-0 out of 5 stars This was a small gem
This was such a great little book aimed at the would-be designer who wants to know about the basics. It has nice layout and good solid information on getting started, element of design, copyfitting, typeface, layout etc. There is a lot packed in one small easy to read package and it is too bad the author and publisher don't update to include more modern technology. It remains one of my favorite quick reference books for any sort of home graphics project like newsletters, stationary, invitations etc. ... Read more

Product Description

Community development - the economic, physical, and social revitalization of a community, led by the people who live in that community - offers a wide range of exciting and rewarding employment options. But until now, there has been no "road map" for professionals, volunteers, students, or anyone wishing to become involved in the field.

A Guide to Careers in Community Development describes the many different kinds of community development jobs available, ranging from community organizing, to financing housing and new businesses, to redeveloping brownfields. It offers advice on how to break into the field along with guidance for career advancement and lateral movement.

Following an introductory chapter that offers an overview and definition of community development and its history, the authors describe:

  • different institutions in the field and how they fit together
  • pros and cons of community development careers, with a self-assessment quiz for readers to use in analyzing their suitability for the field
  • the work and skills involved in different kinds of positions
  • how to prepare for and move up in a career
  • how to land that first job
Also included are detailed appendixes that provide information on job descriptions with salary ranges; universities and colleges offering community development curricula; training programs; where to look for job announcements; internet resources; internships, fellowships, and volunteer positions; and much more.

A Guide to Careers in Community Development is an essential reference for anyone interested in working in the community development field, including graduate and undergraduate students, volunteers, and mid-career professionals seeking a more fulfilling line of work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great service
book came in a quick time and in good condition

5-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful source of guidance
After graduating from college I tried a lot of different things, seeking my niche. I knew I wanted to do work that would influence my community and make it a better place, but I didn't know on what scale I wanted to operate or how my day-to-day might look. This remarkable book helped me broaden and clarify my thinking about what directions I might go in. I highly recommend it to any other do-gooder who feels herself in a bit of a career crisis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, community development coming of age
Ever heard the joke about the city planner who married his wife just so he wouldn't have to explain what city planning is on another first date again?Community development is often even harder for the general masses to comprehend, and yet we are a part of it all the time.CD is basically what happens when neighbors get together and decide they want a better neighborhood, where people can afford to live and still feel safe, still find economic opportunity and a sense of community.Over the last generation, a whole industry and profession has grown around this simple idea.CD is something you can now get a masters degree in.Most people in the CD field entered it through a back door.Today's CD professional is more than a person with good intentions.He/she has skills in real estate development, group facilitation and strategic planning, public policy analysis, and finance. This book is the first of its kind--an actual front door into the field--and it's a godsend for anyone considering a challenging and meaningful career in making neighborhoods better. The book gives great background on the industry, has real case studies with leaders--as well as everyday joes--in the field, lists common job titles and responsibilities, and even estimates pay scales. It's an ambitious, yet slim, readable book that delivers what it promises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Guide to Great Careers
Excellent guide for anyone considering or already starting out working or volunteering in the field of community development (CD) human services, economic development, planning, banking, politics. Comprehensive, well written, reader friendly, up to date, with specific tips and examples. Features: Concise overview of broadly interpreted CD industry and movement in U.S. of community renewal, organizing, planning, construction, financing, managing in lower income or disinvested communities. Great profiles of those working in the field from many walks of life, levels of formal education. Numerous profiles of nonprofits, for-profits, congregations, and public agencies leaders in CD. Good section on figuring out if this field for you and listing of pros and cons. Best ever appendices featuring texts, web sites, job hunting resources, schools, and portals, and organizations. Read in one one hour what has taken many several years to figure out. Great for guidance counselors, career services departments at universities. Product Description
The later Colonial era saw a need to replace the buildings hurriedly assembled by earlier colonists, but competent builders were difficult to find. Capable housewrights were usually well paid and many became respected and prosperous members of their communities, but craft apprenticeships and a gentlemanly taste were two of the primary requirements for becoming an architect. As the profession developed, architects in the Northeast initiated efforts to distinguish between their work and that of housewrights and builders.

This work is a history of the development of architecture as a profession in the United States. It is divided into four chronological sections. Section One covers the beginnings in Colonial times before 1800 when there were no identifiable professionals. Section Two examines architecture from 1800 to the Civil War, a period during which the first architects appeared. Section Three considers the profession from the time of the Civil War to World War I and the strengthening of the profession’s status. Section Four covers architecture since World War I up to the present. Each section discusses the training of architects, standards of practice, general management methods, information sources, minority participation, and other aspects of professional operation, with special attention given to the relationship between the profession’s development and the social history of the periods. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book to Read BUT DON'T BUY for the exam
It's a good book to have especially if you are an e-project manager. However, Cisco has discontinued the exams and as such don't waste your money buying this book for exam intentions. BUY the book if you would like to have a clear knowledge on e-architecture. Worth the money for knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning something new every day - simply great.
When I first started reading this book I thought I was only concerned with how e-business runs, but after delving further into the book and looking at the examples and diagrams I found out that this book is more than just howe-commerce works it also what makes e-commerce work.

While only about 225 pages in length, don't be fooled by that, this book packs a great deal of information within its pages. From the design and what hardware to choose to making sure you have no downtime to consideration outside the network world, this book seems to cover every angle and approach.

The authors make sure you understand the need for security, how QoS affects the website andwhy network management is so very important. Put it all together and you have the foundation you need to not only run an e-business but manage it as well.

Overall, I am not sure if this book was written for any one exam certification but it should help with several. Also there is several review questions at the end of each chapter.

This is certianly an ivestment well worth the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A how to guide to the landscaping industry for those who love gardening
Having an eye for design is one thing, but to be a professional takes a bit more. "So You Want to Be a Garden Designer: How to Get Started, Grow, and Thrive in the Landscape Design Business" is a how to guide to the landscaping industry for those who love gardening and want to better embrace it and its challenges. Passion is a great place to begin, but Love Albrecht Howard gives readers the finer tuning of the business side, how to present your ideas, and most importantly how to make it profitable. For anyone with dreams of making their living working with gardens, "So You Want to Be a Garden Designer" is the book for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you dream of becoming a designer, pick up this book for an inside look of what to expect
As a landscape designer, I hear it all the time from new acquaintances... "I'd LOVE to do what you do... think about plants all day, design gorgeous gardens, get my hands in the earth."

But almost as quickly as their tone turns dreamy, they snap back to reality. There are just too many buts. "But I have a well-paying job!" "I don't know enough about plants." Or most daunting of all, "I wouldn't even know where to start".

Love Albrecht Howard has crafted a thorough and detailed guide to getting past all those "buts" and getting into a career you'll love. She's got suggestions for how to start out slowly if you can't afford to leave your day job, how to build your knowledge and professionalism, and suggests ways of handling common situations as a designer.

Of course, along the way you'll learn the unvarnished truth about what it's like being a landscape designer. We all have horror stories of clients who think designing with plants is like designing with objects - that we should be able to specify no-maintenance plants that will do well without water, in poor soil, with deer and dark shade - yet flower all year long!

Albrecht Howard shares her professional tricks on designing for tough conditions, as well as for communicating the possibilities to clients. And she shares the pitfalls she's found as a designer and advises you on how to work professionally through the expected and not-so-expected adventures you'll have as a designer.

If you know what knowledge gaps you're missing, it's not too hard to figure out how to gain skill at specific aspects. But so much of the value in this book is in teaching fledgling designers what they don't yet know they need to learn. These are the tricks most of us learn after years of mistakes, and Albrecht Howard shares her experiences honestly so that new designers won't have to learn from the school of hard knocks the way the rest of us did.

Now - two things you should know about this book. One is that it's full of text. Not a lot of pictures. This is great if you're really motivated to read her stories and learn from her experience; it's not fluff. But if you're expecting photos of gardens or illustrations of different materials, how-to photos, or just want to skim through casually reading bits here and there - this probably isn't your book. Invest the time to read it properly and you'll find your time well-spent.

Thing number two: While it has a lot of value to established designers (I've been designing for seven years and I adored the camaraderie of finding out how similar her experiences have been to my own!), this book is much more about how to begin the process of becoming a designer than about the specifics of building and growing your business. It's not a marketing or business book, it's a how-to-approach-this-thoughtfully-as-a-career book. You'll still need coaching from your local small business administration on how to do all the nuts and bolts involved in starting and running any business.

My take? This is an awesome book that will help you figure out whether this is really a business you want to be in, and if you do, she'll hold your hand and help you feel confident and professional tackling your first jobs and getting started as a designer. And if you're already a designer, like me? Read it just for the client stories! I laughed, hard, and felt so much better knowing I'm not alone...

(EDIT September 1, 2010: It's occurred to me that while the business practices Howard espouses are perfectly legal in her state, it might not be obvious to people new to this field that laws vary wildly from state to state.

The business practices Howard advises, such as overseeing a landscape installation as a general contractor without holding a contractor's license yourself, and taking 50% of the bid price for installation prior to the start of the job are both very illegal in CA, where I live. Here, designers cannot subcontract out the installation of the design unless you hold a general contractor's license. Just wanted to urge people new to the business to call their own state contractor's board to find out the laws in their own state and not take it for granted that all of the business practices Howard advises will be applicable to you.

This is a small part of the book, though, so shouldn't detract from your enjoyment or the usefulness of the book.) ... Read more

Product Description
Superbly researched and expertly illustrated, this study offers one of the most detailed building and career histories of a ship ever written, the third rate of Charles II's Restoration Navy. The author focuses on HMS Lenox, a 44-gun two-decker third rate built in 1677 during the Anglo-Dutch Wars and also in response to Louis XIV's massive naval expansion program. After twelve years of research and writing, the author provides a comprehensive history of seventeenth-century ship design and construction techniques and the armament and fitting of the vessel. He offers a broad picture of the day-to-day workings of the Deptford dockyard where the Lenox was built and details of the techniques, trade, and tools of the shipwrights along with a keen insight into the workings of a naval administration under Samuel Pepys. 200 color & b/w illustrations. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Restoration Warship" fills historical gap
"The Restoration Warship" shines the light of exhaustive archival research onto the Royal Navy created by such devoted public servants as the diarist Samuel Pepys during the reign of Charles II. The author follows the ordering, planning, construction, career and final destruction of a Restoration third-rate vessel (70 guns) with detailed construction notes, orders from the Admiralty, progress reports from the shipyard, logs & journal entries from commissioned officers, in all, a brilliantly executed microcosm of Restoration life. Well written and lavishly illustrated.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Restoration Warship--Technical Analysis, Art and History
Richard Endsor's The Restoration Warship is the result of a decade's research and writing. Endsor is a trained aerospace engineer with long experience in analyzing technical issues. He also has been studying the records and the archeology of Britain's early imperial fleets for decades. The Restoration Warship is the result. The book give a reader a lot more than the simple story of a ship. It really is a window into the British monarch Charles II's Thirty Ship Programme which was one of the first modern naval building efforts where standards of key parts were regulated and organized. In addition inventories of large -arts and key portions of the logistical structure which was to support a century of War with France were put in place. The political background is sketched and the trail through the UK's national archives are both painted in carefully. The author also uses his remarkable artistic talent to illustrate the life and times of HMS Lennoxwhich was a 70 gun third rate line of battle ship. The constellation of national talent around this fleet, which included Samuel Pepyss, among others as well was extraordinary. The book is richly illustrated and beautifully produced. Its drawbacks are the relatively small print--the readers here are one suspects a bit more myopic than they used to be as baby boomers--and the presentation and arrangement of the superb drawings from which a model builder of serious student of the ship might attempt a model. These are both sepia colored which makes details a bit harder to extract and placed inside the book's text as foldouts--an end-pocket might have been a better solution. That said this is a wonderful book which could well be at the carpenter's elbow should the English ever decide to match the Dutch and build a replica of these ancestor's of the Victory. It is laden with dozens of data wells for everything from Boats to Ordnance, and is already a well traveled source for details large and small on the Royal Navy of the era from 1660 to 1690.My copy was found on Amazon at a price which matched the publisher's institutional discount. It was certainly worth the price Tobias R. Philbin. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Inspiration
unlike the other reviewers, i actually found this book to be quite inspiring. there's a ton of beautiful pictures of what you can do if you have a lot of money. in my opinion, it's not how much money you have but how you use it that matters. this is quality over quantity here and if you just want to look like everyone else, don't buy this, just go to the mall and see what the shops there are doing.

the idea that you have to jam pack as much stuff as possible in your store in order to be successful is outdated and frankly, just plain silly. i would much rather go into a store that was well edited then to a store that looks like the owner barfed up a bunch of product on the walls, floor, and ceiling - you name it. these stores personally make me want to leave - visual overload!

so, if you are looking for what "could be" than this book is right for you - but if what you want is store with more product than floor space, look somewhere else... the title does it justice - the INSPIRED retail space. other books of note are "hip interiors" and "hip entertaining" both which i highly recommend for great inspiration.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.
This book was a dissapointment for me. I don't have an unlimited budget for store design and most of the businesses featured in this book clearly did. There are a few exceptions to this in the book, but if you're a small business looking for ideas to freshen up your store, I would not recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not relavent for most businesses
This book is basically just a picture book of expensive stores most of us can't afford to shop in (the ones with 2 pairs of shoes on one entire wall, and 3 items on fancy hangers on the other wall). Most of the displays are designed so specifically around the products so it's difficult to even use the pictures as inspitration for different types of merchandise.

We got much more inspiration from the book "Store Presentation & Design" by Vsiual Reference Publications. ... Read more

Good volume but very little substance. The author's description are too esoteric and laced with lots of errors. The editorial team did very little in terms of proofreading and correcting typos.

2-0 out of 5 stars Terrible book
Although I'm not yet done reading the book, it seems terrible to me. I'm not really sure how much of what is presented in the book (and in which detail) is required for the exams, but I do know that as one who has someCOM background, I am having a hard time following the author. As was saidin other reviews - the material is visually presented in a very poor way.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3 stars for content, none for clarity of example
Something as complex as COM technology requires diagrams that show every step, from client call through each interface request, instantiation and moniker bind. This book has one picture with a phalanx of arrows andcircles , where several diagrams are required. His mostly textualexplanations leave out steps that were explained in previous chapters, butagain, explained just as poorly.I have no complaints of excess materialin the book. It's always good to have more than you need, and I can'tagree with those who want a list of test answers. But I've written enoughinstructional material to know that people have three prime learningchannels - text-audio (hearing & reading), visual (diagrams) andkinesthetic (step-through, actually doing).Prendergast only deals withthe first of these three well, the second almost not at all, and in the CDexamples, the third very sparingly.COM code examples should have been inVC++, where the COM technology is actually built from start to finish.VBcode is worthless for that subject.Don't let the MS bashing put you off -he's only being honest.

1-0 out of 5 stars Trivial information and too much opinion ruin a good try
Bruce Prendergast's guide to the two WOSSA tests in the last MCSD certification track suffers from too much author opinion and not enough general knowledge. This book has intimidation written all over it.Fromits massive weight (like one of those dictionaries at a college library, you need a stand to read it!) to a harrowing 10 chapter opening explanationof Microsoft's COM Architecture (with so many names of different interfacesand methods that it is simply overwhelming), this book strikes fear fromthe get-go.My problem is there is never a theme to this and memorizationof all these terms is NOT necessary for passing the WOSSA tests.Seemslike a waste. Now I will say that the middle chapters cover the basics ofthe various database technologies fairly well.Although again, trivialterms and methods and such pop-up with alarming regularity, throwing offthe student and detracting from the fundamental concepts involved. Ialso found the berating of Microsoft to get old by chapter 5 and found itdoesn't quite reach it's peak until the final section. In Chapter 40,which we are told is "probably the most important chapter in thebook," Prendergast just harangues Microsoft to no end because of theirpreference for "bottom-up" methodologies in developingapplications (throw ideas out and see what sticks) over the traditional"top-down" model (a plan is developed and then work divided inorder to fit the plan). While I can agree with this paradigm to someextent, the almost vindictiveness in the author's tone about Microsoft andits practices gets tiresome.I understand that Mr. Prendergast has along history in the information business and he is certainly welcome to hisbeliefs. However, IDG could have knocked $30 off the cost of this book(and a few pounds) by eliminating those chapters and pages of"opinion" and just focused on getting you certified. The backcover says something about the keys to success on the tests and how thefirst one is studying the "right" material. This is not it. Look, get the Transcender tests on WOSSA, learn the concepts they cover byheart (through MSDN even), and have the answers ingrained in your geneticcode.Should have no problem passing then.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best books I have seen Please read on!
Hi, Everybody cool it. I come from an embedded programming background with high performance real time systems also UNIX etc. not to mention IBM 360/370 as well as real time development for NT/9x etc. I startedprofessional programming since 1986 when I was in High school. So, I doknow what goes into it. Let me quote something which happened at M$ forum(MFC) in front of my eyes. If anyone doubts it, take a look at the M$ sitefor its archive. NT4SP4 changes the systems so much that your previousprograms fail. There were M$ developers yelling there when this happened. This is the kind of critical thinking which Bruce tries to put into thisgreat book. I can only wish every budding developer studies this book. Thisbook shows the problems, which you are gonna face when you develop, whichhappen with us all of the time. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is a big help!
With this book, measureUp exams and MSDN just took me two weeks to prepare WOSA I and I passed with 811. I used the same formula for WOSA II and I also passed. It's true that the book have some errors, but those help me totest my achievemets while i Was studying.

4-0 out of 5 stars Use with Transcenders and you will pass
This book is very good - as long as you don't use the CD-based test engine, as it WILL screw up your VB environment, and it doesn't score right. Make sure you download the errata from Sybex's website too. I foundthe material presented very well for study. I studied one chapter a day, doing all the sample questions. Then, once I'd finished studying from thebook, I used the Transcenders. This formula will get you through. However, the book is a little thin in some areas including COM and ODBC Compliance.I took the exam today. The pass mark was 724 and I scored 840. Now it's onto Win Arch II...

5-0 out of 5 stars Not just for passing the exam
This book and its complementary text (WA II) really do a good job of covering the subject matter that any MS-app developer should be familiar with. I studied other material before reading these texts, and I justwasn't sure if I was really learning what I need to know for my profession. These books really gave me a comfort level that I did not have before. That, to me, is more important than being a certified solution developer(which I now am).

Study, learn, and earn more in return :)

4-0 out of 5 stars A No Fail Formula!!!
Although it helped me a lot that I have been providing solutions on Windows platform for over three years now, this book really reinforced what I already know. The Trancenders Software is a great way to test whatyou've learned from this book.Btw, I am basing my ratings only on thebook as I wasn't able to use the accompanying software.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, but an overkill in some areas
I read the book, took the Transcender tests and passed the Microsoft test at first attempt. Some areas in the book are covered in too much detail. The Review questions are not very good. The Transcender test are a definitemust to accompany the book. PS. This combo is propably the cheapest way topass the test. ... Read more

Excerpt:Law Office/Crawford Hill Mansion Denver, CO Philbrook Museum of Art Tulsa, OK Rivercenter San Antonio, TX Urban Design Group (UDG) is professional services firm. It offers architectural, interior, planning and urban design services from studios in Atlanta, Georgia, and Dallas, Texas. UDG was founded in 1975 by John M. Novack, Jr., FAIA, after leaving his position as Design Director at C.F. Murphy Associates of Chicago. The firm has grown over the years, having designed such notable urban projects as Rivercenter, Tabor Center, Disneys Wilderness Lodge and Carlson Center in Minnetonka, among many others. UDG now serves worldwide clientele. Urban Design Group is managed with a studio approach. Each office functions as an independent studio within the larger firm. This allows the firm to offer small firm response time and close involvement with clients, while providing the resources and expertise of a larger firm. The firm was formed within the context of place-making. With the design of the Tabor Center in Denver and Rivercenter in San Antonio, UDG was thrust into the later stages of American urban renewal, and responded with the revelation of a new kind of place. The resulting projects included both the development of new and unforgettable places in the urban core, as well as the startling idea that the inner city buildings that surround these spaces could be revitalized. UDG has been recognized as an innovator of buildings that affect their contexts remarkably, leading to new and reinvigorated urban environments. Product Description

Before the Second World War landscape architect Christopher Tunnard was the first author on Modernism in Landscape in the English language, but later became alarmed by the destructive forces of Post-war reconstruction. Between the 1950s and the 1970s he was in the forefront of the movement to save the city, becoming an acclaimed author sympathetic to preservation.

Ironically it was the Modernist ethos that he had so fervently advocated before the war that was the justification for the dismemberment of great cities by officials, engineers and planners. This was not the first time that Tunnard had to re-evaluate his principles, as he had done so in the 1930s in rejecting Arts-and-Crafts in favour of Modernism. This book tracks his changing ideology, by reference to his writings, his colleagues and his work.

Christopher Tunnard is one of the most influential figures in Landscape Architecture and his journey is one that still resonates in the discipline today. His leading role in first embracing the tenets of Modernism and then moving away from to embrace a more conservationist approach can be seen in the success and impact on the profession of those with whom he worked and taught.

In this collection of interrogatory essays, Francis Duffy argues that the success of the architectural profession in post-war Britain is directly related to its stewardship of the intellectual property that he calls "architectural knowledge."The backdrop to this debate is the author's term of presidency of the RIBA between 1993 and 1995.

Each career path includes a brief history, a description of the actual processes involved in the work and discusses training options and job potentials. A particular strength of the book lies in including some of the more unusual crafts like book binding, stained glass design and weaving.
