5-0 out of 5 stars Witty Advice, Clever Lessons
A candid writing style complements a steady flow of advice in a fantasticnew book by Anthony Kovner, Ph.D. His Health Care Management in Mind: EightCareers is an elegant story on many levels. First, one can read this booksimply as an autobiography of one of health care's most successful andbrightest leaders. The book is designed as a story of Dr. Kovner's resume. Each chapter is devoted to the eight respective careers that Dr. Kovner hasheld, each filled with a detailed description of what it means to be anadministrator, a consultant, an academic, respectively, in variousorganizations.Second, each career proves to be simultaneously easier andharder than the previous or next one. This is made clear by Dr. Kovner'sability to lend insight with a welcome but heavy dosage of wit (e.g. amanager in a difficult situation can best be labeled as "having asmuch chance as a one-legged man in an ass-kicking contest"); advice("network, network, network"); and a "lessons learned"segment within each chapter ("I would encourage any manager to payattention to timing and questions of tone.")Tying these thoughtstogether, and reading in-between the lines, one can read past Dr. Kovner'sclever wit and openess to understand: 1.) That a successful career is onethat is a mixture of skills and experiences where one can be a"gentleman" who completes his work with passion and merit;2.)That one needs to fail in some jobs to be ultimately successful inother, more challenging ones; 3.)That friends and mentors help enhanceone's ego, mind, and temperament; 4.) That every manager needs to keep hiseyes focused, his ears open, and his sense of humor ever present; and 5.)That it is fun to look back on one's career and be able to tell anecdotesand managerial tidbits. Each chapter ends with a checklist of questionsthat current and future managers can answer honestly about themselves, allbased on the themes of the chapter. Ever the professor, Dr. Kovnerconcludes each chapter with a "Practical Exercise" segment thatallows the reader to ask and look into questions that helps her own career. With humor, classic academic rigor, and fine storytelling, Dr. Kovnerpaints of picture of eight careers that are fun, practical, insightful, andmost importantly extend a lesson.I highly recommend this book to youngmanagers who need a mentor and to experienced managers and academics whocan share in the experiences of a fellow leader. As a young administratormyself, the next time I want to serve as a consultant, become a CEO, workwith a billion-dollar foundation, or teach graduate school, I think I'llcheck back with each respective chapter and see what may come my way in wayof expectations, rewards, lessons, and, of course, work. For this I remainthankful, as will any reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Insight into Career Decision Making
This book is a fascinating look at the evolution of a career inmanagement. It is notable for the author's honesty throught his 8 careers--moving at first haphazardly, and then with more direction, a reader canfollow his decisions. As a MBA student, I found his description of careersheartening and engaging. The guides at the end of each chapter serve as amore formal learning guide for readers pursuing health management careers.Overall a great read, and educational to boot! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Real Life Experience Makes this Book Make Sense
I first read this book as part of a class for my Master's degree in Health Care Admin.

At the time the book seemed to vary between common sense information and esoteric information. However, the more time I spend working in the real world, the more this book makes sense.

I now rely on this book for some important decisions, such as which job to take. While the book still seems to have some short-fallings, it may make even more sense to me as I am in the real world longer.

I suggest this book for both those in school and those working. While I did not get as much out of the book while I was in school, it still provided some basic schemas from which I work now.I also had much more time in school to read this than now. ... Read more

Product Description
Human resources for health are a priority to improve health outcomes in Africa. In order to strengthen policies based on evidence, a better understanding is needed of health worker choice and behaviour. This book tries to help fill that gap. Relying on unique survey data, it analyses the career preferences of future health workers in Rwanda, focusing on their sector preference, their willingness to work in a rural area, likelihood to migrate abroad, and readiness to work in a high HIV prevalence environment. The findings show that health workers are not as uniform as is often thought, and can have very different preferences. Their reservation wages for different job types cover a wide range, and there are substantial differences in intrinsic motivation and attitudes to risk. But there are also communalities among these future health workers. While the public sector remains the biggest employer in Rwanda it is not the most popular one; and the vast majority is happy to start their career in a rural setting. The results also show the importance of intrinsic motivation, which is associated with a number of career preferences and expectations like the preference for rural service, expectations about income and the preference for dual practice.Governments in Africa have identified human resources for health as a policy priority. To improve policies, this book provides evidence on health workers choice and behaviour. Why, where and for how much will be a valuable resource for government officials in Rwanda and beyond to design effective human resource policies. ... Read more
