5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite cookbook!
I love this cookbook so much that I'm ordering a new one.The cover of my original is partially melted and the pages are stained, dog-eared, and falling out from heavy use.The recipes in this cookbook are easy to follow, forgiving of errors, and interesting enough to provide variety to my family's diet without needing fancy ingredients. This is a great cookbook for the beginning cook with limited time to spend in the kitchen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good
The recipes are delicious and a hit with my family. The cookbook is boring to look at because of no photographs, but I'm guessing this is to keep the price down as well as to squeeze in more recipes. Photos of the dishes would be nice, as other reviewers have suggested. I haven't tried it but these dishes probably freeze well and can make a quick "grab-n-go" meal for the busy household.

3-0 out of 5 stars cookbooks
Recipies sound good. But no pixs.I like pixs so good you can almost smell the food.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Dish Meals
Very easy to follow. All the recipes I have tried have been very tasty.Easy cleanup with one pan.Would recommend this book to anyone especially working women with little time to spare.

4-0 out of 5 stars No Photographs
I'm giving this a 4-star because the recipes looked good and easy. However, I returned this book because it didn't contain any photographs.I know it sounds silly, but I find that having a photo of each meal helps to inspire me when meal-planning. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Caution--This is a Low Fat Cookbook
My major observations after flipping through this cookbook are:
1)It is a low-fat cookbook, which is great if that is what you are looking for.2) Many of the recipes require browning of meat prior to adding it to the crockpot, which is a drawback.3) This cookbook does not make heavy use of convenience items, like canned soups, which is a plus.(It does call for canned broths, which is not objectionable).Overall, a nice selection of recipes, particularly if you are trying to avoid the crockpot cookbooks which call for opening & dumping processed foods like entire bottles of catalina dressing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super Duper!
I purchased Carol Munsun's crock pot cook a few weeks ago.So far I have prepared perhaps a half dozen of her recipes and they all have been fabulous.

For years I have been using Crock pots, mostly for cooking legumes and soups - pretty conservative and safe fare. However, Munson's recipes have all been exceptionally tasty, and easy to follow, as well as healthy.

In my opinion, if you are interested in slow cooking as a means of eating low fat food this is the "first" book you should pick up.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine recipes--but I didn't realize they were low-fat!
In my ongoing quest for simple recipes to throw in the Crock-Pot, I ordered this book, and am generally pleased with it.

The recipes themselves are quite appealing and meet my primary criterion for slow-cooker meals: They call for simple ingredients requiring a minimum of preparation in the morning... The vast majority of them are things I wouldn't hesitate to try.

The only real gripe I have is one that perhaps I could have avoided had I looked carefully at the enlarged picture of the front cover and seen that these are LOW-FAT recipes. (In retrospect, I now understand the word "Smart" in the title.) Looking at the recipes, I think I can probably remedy that by simply using higher-fat versions of the ingredients (whole or 2% milk instead of skim, full-bore sour cream instead of light, etc.).

All in all, probably an OK book to add to your Crockery Cookery collection... ... Read more

I have had this book for several years and find the recipes interesting and healthy. As in any book, there are a few that we aren't using regularly, but as a whole, the book is filled with modern, up-dated casserole recipes that are easy to prepare and fun to eat.I especially like her vegetarian recipes and their creative use of ingredients.Don't be afraid of these recipes and enjoy them!

1-0 out of 5 stars a disappointment

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm now officially Casserole Crazy - this book turned me into a cook!
What can I say about Casserole Crazy except that it's gotten me into the kitchen and cooking? I'm hardly a cook, and my usual meals come from takeout food or my freezer, but I was intrigued by the blog enough to check out the cookbook and I'm so glad I did. So far, I've made two recipes, the first being the garlic mac and cheese that I made with some friends. We wound up with two pans of it (substituting rotini for elbow macaroni) and both were gone by the time we went to sleep. It was delicious. Then on my own I made the Tater Tot Turkey Casserole and was reminded a) how delicious tater tots are and b) what a fun, simple meal this was.

There's such a wide variety of casseroles, for the food snob and the starving artist and everyone in between, and Farris's fun attitude infuses her recipes. I really like that anyone can make these recipes, and trust me, if I can make them, anyone can. I look forward, especially as the weather is freezing out, to cranking up my oven and trying more of Farris's inventive casseroles, as well as tweaking them since it's so easy to do. Now, armed with my giant new glass casserole pan, I'm also officially casserole crazy!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book opened my eyes, and my mouth!
As a smug urbanite who didn't grow up with casseroles, I wasn't sure this book would have anything for me. Turns out, my famous mac and cheese counts, and Farris's recipes have made in a million times better. Filled with a variety of fresh and gourmet ingredients, these recipes are for everyone, foodie or five-year-old. And the writing is clever enough to read in bed or on the subway--cracking it open in the kitchen is just gravy (er...crispy cheese topping?)

5-0 out of 5 stars The Casserole Revival Begins Now
Emily Farris has taken that sad avatar of 1950's middle America -- the casserole, the purgatory of onion soup mix and government cheese, the anti-gourmet meal -- updated it for the 21st Century, and made it delicious. At once fresh and traditional, it's roots rock for your oven. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
The photos are outstanding, and I often turn to this cookbook when I need inspiration. Contrary to one of the other reviewers, I find these recipes to be consistently sound. I purchased this book several years ago and it continues to be one of the staples of my kitchen.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures horrible recipes
This is a great cookbook if you like looking at great pictures of food and need some inspiration, but the recipes are horrible. If the recipes could at least be half as good as the pictures look, then this cookbook would be worth using.I tried out a few different recipes, and it makes me think that maybe they didn't try out the recipes before publishing this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Winning casserole recipes from decades of the Pillsbury Bake Off Contest
Pillsbury has been sponsoring their bake off contests for more than fifty years. This neat book captures what modern editors chose as the best of the winning recipes over the decades. While I am sure the editors chose the recipes that would appeal most to modern tastes, you can see how tastes have changed over the years because they include the name of the person who contributed the recipe and the year it won the contest.

The first portion of the book offers a few pages on the way the contest has evolved (including the replacement of the fictitious Ann Pillsbury with the Pillsbury Doughboy in the 1970s).Another couple of pages look at the kinds of recipes that were popular in each decade and the most popular of those that are included in the book.

These recipes are focused on ease of preparation, taste, and are more about the kind of home cooking that combines store bought components rather than scratch cooking with basic and fresh ingredients. While the earlier recipes do focus on flour, the later recipes use the store bought rolls, crusts, and so forth. You will also notice that the trend over the decades was toward greater diversity in food culture, even if it isn't "authentic" cuisine. The other trend is towards ever easier preparation most of the cook times range from a half hour to an hour and a half with most being around an hour give or take 15 minutes.

The more than 100 recipes are clear, simple and easy to follow. Some are accompanied by attractive and appetizing photographs.Nutrition information is included at the bottom or each recipe page. Each recipe also includes a note about whether you need to make adjustments for altitude or not. There are a couple of pages of nutrition information at the back of the book. You can find specific recipes and ingredients by using the index, but you can browse the book by flipping through the five broad groupings of the recipes: 1) hearty beef favorites; 2) savory pork suppers; 3) comforting chicken & turkey; 4) seafood & meatless mainstays; and 5) dinner pies & quiches.

The book also includes a metric conversion guide. One interesting feature is the grouping of the winning contributors by state so you can look at the recipes from your home state or whatever region of the country you are curious about.

If you are a scratch cook foodie, this book won't be for you. However, if you want to explore American Home Cooking as it is practiced by millions of American families and find some tasty recipes you can create at home after a busy day at work, this is a really helpful resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good `n easy
Casseroles are such a wonderful meal. They are comforting, they have your main food and the sides/vegetables all together. You can give them to others for their comfort and take them to bring your own suppers. They are one of the ultimate comfort foods and this book has some of the bestrecipes I've run across, including one that surprises many (in a good respect) when I fix it - tomato, macaroni and cheese. There are other dishes that have more `modern' ingredients than many think of as casserole recipes; salmon and potato strata, garden paella, baked beans with apple garnish. Recipes include some to make ahead and then cook, always handy to have around, especially the tasty shrimp and cheese strata that uses only ½ pound of tiny shrimp, but turns out as an impressive dish.
There are many handy hints to make these casseroles/one-pot meals and information on the dishes to cook in. Recipes include: pasta, chicken and turkey, beef and veal, pork, lamb, fish and seafood, vegetarian, brunch and lighter fare. There is an index and a few pictures are in this book that is a plus for any cook's cookbook shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Allrecipes taught me to cook...
I have used a lot of the recipes in this book and I have loved most of them. The thing I like about allrecipes is you can go online and read reviews and suggestions for each recipe you want to make.I will normally choose one that I like and add my special touches and check out the reviews and add some of other peoples touches. When my husband and I first moved in together I was only 21 and could only cook macaroni and cheese. It was before the cookbooks came out and I searched for any recipe that looked good that I could see the nutritional info for.It helped me so much to not only make sure I was eating healthy but really taught me how to cook and experiment.I can't say that I'm a pro now but I never hear my husband complain. The ways I have learned to experiment using the allrecipes postings, reviews and suggestions has been absolutely priceless. If I ever need anything I go there first.I love having the cookbooks so it cuts down on a lot of the searching, I already know these have the highest ratings on the site...so I just choose and look it up and make notes on the reviews.Wonderful!!

3-0 out of 5 stars not my kind of recipes
after reading the previous reviews, i thought it would be safe to order this book. i finally bought a crock pot and am looking for interesting recipes and information on adapting my regular recipes.

there are a few recipes i will probably try, but i was appalled at the number of recipes calling for canned vegetables--for crock pot use--canned soups, dry soup mixes, etc. i was also disappointed at the number of recipes that are very very similar to those in the two other slow cooker books i've bought.

i found the organization of the book annoying. the chapters are based on type of meats, and the slow cooker recipes and the casserole recipes are in each chapter. i would have found the book more convenient if it had been divided by slow cooker/casserole. that, of course, is a personal preference.

the one good thing about buying this book is that now i know that i will not be interested in the other allrecipes cookbooks that are now showing up in my recommendations.

I found this cookbook when I was searching on Amazon for crock-pot and casserole cookbooks because I wanted some new EASY recipes.Voila! Two books in one!Since this book is a compilation of the best rated recipes from the site Allrecipes.com, it's like getting each family's absolute best and favorite recipe.Lots of "secret ingredient" finds!Unlike most cookbooks, as I flip through this one, EVERY recipe is a "winner" that my husband and I would like to try.Since each recipe is from a different cook, the cooking styles vary widely throughout the book, unlike a standard book of recipes written by one or a few cooks.I find that in most cookbooks, all the recipes tend to draw from the same set of ingredients and/or always use the same cooking style, so you've really only paid for a few good recipes.

The only drawback to this book is that there are no pictures, since there aren't any on the website either. But reading through each recipe it is very easy to "picture" the dish. The instructions are clear and concise.

Another thing:Some of the recipes are very similar, i.e. a few different lasagna recipes, a couple crock-pot rib recipes. The good part about that is if you don't quite have everything on hand for the first one, you might for the second one!Knowing that now, I still would have purchased the book anyway. This might have bothered me except I think there are actually a few dozen more than the advertised 200 recipes in the book.

The book is divided up into chapters based on the main meat ingredient (i.e. beef, chicken, pork), including a "Meatless Mains" chapter and a side-dish chapter. The chapters are then further separated by crock-pot cooking or oven-baking.Some recipies are maybe only 4 ingredients (for the VERY busy day) and others might be over 20 and a little more complicated, but unique and tasty as a result!

I'm positive this cook book will be used MUCH more than the others that are collecting dust on my kitchen shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Recipe is Wonderful!
This has been my most used cookbook. The meals are easy, have few ingredients, and tast fabulous. My husband has even tried to cook from this book--the first time ever. It's a must have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Husband gives thumbs up!
It is time to get out your crock pot/slow cooker and get cooking. Think of the time you'll save. Dinner is ready and (ha) on time! Oh, the delightful smells in our kitchen. Just ordered this book recently. Have only made a few recipes (for example: Easy and Delicious Chicken p. 111 and Slow Cooker Cranberry Pork p. 68), but all were delicious and husband approved. (We have a rule at our home: thumbs up - make it again -or- thumbs down - don't even think about it.) Looking forward to more wonderful slow cooker adventures. One concern is that some don't appear to be low fat or low calorie (I would take off 1/2 star for that), so approach with caution and possible adjustments for health's sake. Yes, it has some very delicious looking casseroles too -- it's just that I'm into slow cooking right now. I agree with previous reviewer that nutritional information would be most helpful. By the way, don't need pictures...just a fork -- yum! ... Read more
