Product Description
These are just a very few of the castles and little notes about them that I have either painted or had the pleasure to stay in. Many are open to the public while others are still lived in by the families that built them.
The USA has its share of great houses and castles, amny would think so, but many states have castles that have been shipped over brick by brick, or the or has styled his castle after one he has seen in Europe, if your travels bring you near one of these, stop and moment and explore.
I hope you enjoy this little book and if traveling, stop by one of these castles and see for yourself. ... Read more

Product Description
Ringberg Castle on Tegernsee is the final example of the long-standing building tradition of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Duke Luitpold had this mighty complex built over a period of six decades, from 1913 to his death in 1973, taking as much interest in its progress as his uncle King Ludwig II had during the construction of his fairy tale castles. As a work of art, Ringberg is unequalled in Europe. It impressively reflects all the changes in art during the periods covering late Historicism, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, regional styles, Neo-Classicism, Modernism and National-Socialist-Classicism. The architecture and furnishings were the work of a single individual - the Munich painter Friedrich Attenhuber, Luitpold's house-artist. Duke Luitpold bequeathed Ringberg Palace to the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, which today uses the premises for academic conventions. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Could have had more text
I would have given this book 5 stars if not for the fact that some of the photos have no identifying or descriptive text whatsoever. The photography is gourgeous and first-rate, but having the text in 5 different languages and in extremely tiny print made it a bit difficult to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Do not think homes
The book is gorgeous, top quality in everyaspect, however it is announced that the castles and palaces are in private hands so I expected something a little more homely or "living among history and grandeur"Castles And Palaces of Europe ... Read more

Product Description
This delightful little booklet is sold as a guidebook for visitors to Schonbrunn Palace. About three English miles from the Great Belvedere near Vienna is the famous palace of Schonbrunn which was rebuilt from its own ruins in 1696. This is a sort of summer residence of the Emperor of Austria and it is here that his daughter, the ex-Empress of France, and the young Bonaparte usually reside. The latter never goes into Italy, when his mother, as Duchess of Parma, pays her annual visit to her principality. Schonbrunn is a most magnificent pile of building; a truly imperial residence. This book features over 45 color plate photos and descriptions of this grand place including its history, courtyards, gardens and a complete description of each interior room. It is small enough to carry as a pocketbook yet inclusive enough to contain virtually all the important information one would like to know for an unforgettable visit to Schonbrunn. ... Read more

Product Description
Various groups lay claim today to the central site of old Berlin, that on which the city palace of the Prussian Kings and the German Emperors stood. Some want to build a historical copy of the palace while others, such as the Foreign Minister, wish to see a new building with a functional orientation. For others still 'To keep or to demolish the Palast des Republik' is a question of dogma. An exhibit entitled 'The Palace?' will take place 100 days long at the site of the former city palace starting July 1, 1993 and will set signs for Berlin's way into the next century. A group of selected architects, among them David Chipperfield, Josef Paul Kleihues, Hans Kollhoff, Jose Luis Mateo and Axel Schultes, will present their contributions for discussion on the reconstruction of the city palace and on the new shape of Berlin's old historical center. The exhibit and this book, however, deal also with the context of the history, the architecture, the demolition and the possible perspectives for the reconstruction of the city palace. The book is recommended not only to exhibit visitors but also to anyone who is interested in the heated debate on this subject. ... Read more

Product Description
Largely neglected and unknown, the palaces, villas, and castles of Central Europe are revealed in the revised edition of this dazzling history. In the heart of Central Europe stand some of the most elegant and grandly conceived country houses ever constructed, from medieval fortresses and Renaissance-era estates to baroque villas and neoclassical palaces. Until the last decade these illustrious residences were inaccessible to the West. This landmark volume presents these rarely seen treasures of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland, nations that shelter a superb selection of Europe's finest country houses, built over the centuries by some of the continent's most distinguished families. Richly illustrated with specially commissioned photography, "The Great Country Houses of Central Europe" tells the stories of these magnificent buildings and the families that constructed them, immersing us in the vanished world of the region's aristocracy. Lord Michael Pratt sets his discussion of the houses and their patrons against the backdrop of Central European history.Although the primary focus is on the houses and the families that built them, gardens, grounds, and interiors are also illustrated in detail, including examples of furniture, decorative arts, and paintings. Splendid and surprising, these remarkable structures and the magisterial book that celebrates them display Central Europe in its full glory. ... Read more
