Product Description
This book is the first English-language collection of recent research on demographic, social, and environmental issues in Central America. The region's experience with ethnic and cultural identity provides food for thought for scholars concerned with the meaning of ethnicity and the consequences of cultural change. Countries in the region also have grapppled with the complex issues of promoting economic growth and reducing poverty while avoiding environmental destruction. The chapters in this volume provide important and often novel insights into these and many other demographic, social, and policy issues in the Central American Isthmus. For the first time in the English language, Central America's rich demographic history comes into focus in this volume. Editors Anne R. Pebley and Luis Rosero-Bixby provide the first and only English translations of works originally presented at the International Conference on the Population of the Central American Isthmus. The chapters in this volume offer insights on a broad range of subjects, including estimates of the indigenous population, differences in education and earnings, trends in fertility and maternal and child health, migration, the environment, and many other demographic, social, and policy issues in the region. ... Product Description
"This book is a solid overview that is more concerned with what happened than why it happended, and a work that can be a starting-point for those who want an introduction to US-Central American relations or a dependable reference for the more knowledgeable. Although primarily concerned with getting the most important facts recorded, Findling knows when to stop and present interpretative insights (as in his page on the New Deal, which he handles critically and well). Comets come and go, but this book should have a good life as an analysis that serves as a useful reference to a relationship that remains, unfortunately for Central Americans and US foreign policy, too little understood." Product Description

Since its inception in the 1960s to the regional negotiations in the 1990s and onwards, Central American integration has been a process characterized by both dramatic advances and setbacks. This book provides a theoretical explanation of this ebb and flow, examining different stages including the military conflicts of the 1980s, the subsequent Esquipulas peace process, and the relaunch of integration during the 1990s under the System of Central American Integration (SICA).

Sánchez Sánchez's analysis focuses on the policies and preferences of the larger states of the region, Costa Rica, El Salvador and Guatemala, and argues that integration relies on intergovernmental bargaining. Interviews, historical and comparative data are presented in a format invaluable for students and teachers concerned with comparative regional integration, as well as for those seeking a greater understanding of contemporary Central American regional and international politics and development.

Product Description
This community-based inquiry sought to gain an understanding of the process by which elements of a local context attempted to influence, via agenda setting, the formulation of public policy at the federal level. Data were gathered via the qualitative methods of document review, participant observation, and interviews. Local government officials, leaders of religious and refugee advocacy groups, Immigration and Naturalization personnel, and Central Americans were key data sources. To seek meaning in two complex conceptual domains (public policy formulation and refugee policy) the inquiry process and findings are reported in the "thick description" format of a linear-analytic case study. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Since the late 1970s, events in Central America have brought increased scholarly interest in the six isthmus nations--Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Conceived in response to that scholarly interest, this volume provides a guide to collections of archival and manuscript materials in this country. Although most research in this country has focused on the sources available at the United States National Archives, there is a vast amount of underutilized research materials in smaller collections throughout this country. This work provides access to these lesser known collections as well as to the larger collections holding vast quantities of material. The book will be a valuable tool to researchers seeking primary material on Central America. ... Read more

Product Description
Juan Fermin de Aycinena was the wealthiest, most prominent, and most powerful individual in late colonial Central America. Chronicling Aycinena's extraordinary rise to power, Richmond F. Brown also sheds new light on the development of politics, economy, and society in Central America. As Brown demonstrates, Aycinena played a role in practically all aspects of isthmian affairs, including commercial expansion, military activities, and the church establishment. He was both an aggressive entrepreneur and a defender of traditional colonial institutions. For his numerous services to the Spanish Crown, Aycinena received a Castilian title, the only title in late colonial Central America. Aycinena's success placed his family in a position to dominate Central American politics, commerce, and society for much of the nineteenth century. To this day his descendants are part of Guatemala's elite. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and the subject well researched
Being a descendant of Juan Fermin de Aycinena I became interested in knowing more about the family background. This book not only consists about a biography but also gives a very well elaborated description of the geographical, social, political, religious and economic situation of Guatemala. In a strong manner, the book connects his place of birth with Juan Fermin's "mission" to Central America. I've always been curious about my family's past, and through my grandfather and parents I have been able to know about it. This book opened an even larger door to the first Aycinena who went to Guatemala. ... Read more
