5-0 out of 5 stars High Fire Glazes
Excellent book that clearly explains glazing chemistry and use in a well-written format with supportive pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars great reference book
If I had only had one book on this subject this would be it.I have been working with high fire glazes for over thirty years and this is the most comprehensive, thourogh, and well researched book I have come across. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book of it's kind
You can stop looking - this is the best ^10 glaze book out there.I have been a potter for over thirty years and tested many glazes. This is the most organized and user friendly information around. It is arranged by color in a way that allows you to easily see the difference between similar recipes. Unless you want to start form scratch (which I have no desire to do)this is where to look. You may need to adjust a little, as "glazes don't travel well" because of differences in water, chemicals, clay body and firing but this is a good place to start. I have given this book to at least six other potters!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all 'Cone 10 firing potters'

You will not only enjoy the great photos, but the simple layout of formulas
makes your life easier!

5-0 out of 5 stars great reference
I haven't read the entire book yet. I am a beginning pottery student and I am finding the book to be an excellent reference for learning more about different types of glazes. I am starting to understand more about how to create my own glazes using a basic glaze formula and altering it depending on what I want the glaze to do. The book has probably about a hundred (I could be a bit off) glaze recipes. I have tried several of them with success. I think the importance of this book is not the recipes but the discussions that go with them, that allow for understanding of how to create glazes. The book also discusses the fire cycle (just a little bit) in relation to different glazes. ... Read more

Product Description

In the hands of an expert ceramist, the once-simple cup can become an extraordinary work of art--as these 500 magnificent examples so beautifully prove. The exciting pieces come from an international array of artists, each with a unique perspective. The stylishly varied collection has a little bit of everything: the cups range from handbuilt to wheel-thrown, practical to sculptural, round to square. Benjamin Schulman's "Stacked Teacup Set" takes a strictly functional approach, while Heather O'Brien's "Dessert Cups on Stand" focuses on aesthetic form rather than usefulness. Annette Gates' "Espresso Shot Cups with Rubies" has a surface design of simple abstract lines and dots of glaze and jewels. Some are whimsical, others starkly conceptual. Every one is a treat for the eye.

5-0 out of 5 stars My cup runneth over
Beautiful art book displaying many cups.Good for leafing through to gain inspiration on ideas.Beautiful photographs.

5-0 out of 5 stars 500 Series: Cups
Beautiful book, gorgeous photographs of unique and beautiful pieces. Highly recommended. Hundreds of different artists, cups and mugs for all tastes. Hours of page flipping, lots of great inspirational ideas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Book of Inspirations
This book is basically a picture book with many unique creations by other artists. They give me lots of new ideas to use in my own pottery. I highly recommend this book for the person that just needs a new direction to go with their art. I am currently requesting the other books like 500 bowls, pitchers, plates, etc.

One thing to know is that this book is not a How-To Manual. Apparently the artists wanted to keep their techniques private, but their work public. I found that many of the pieces looked difficult to replicate, as they can become very abstract. There are some descriptions of certain properties, such as the type of firing and clay. Other than that, the pieces served me as inspirations for experimentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
The variety of effects possible with ceramics and glazes never fails to amaze. I collect ceramics but I could never afford or find so many lovely examples as are in this $16 book. One complaint: The text notes some of the technical features of each piece without defining them or explaining what they mean.

5-0 out of 5 stars An addition to my collection
I have 6 books in this series, and I enjoy them all. They are well-edited and the photos are fantastic. You really can't read this book in one sitting. You'll find yourself referring to it over time for inspiration and enjoyment. Of the 500.. series this is my least-favorite, but it is still very good. My favorites are "500 Figures in Clay" and "500 animals in Clay". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia of Pottery Techniques
This is a wonderfully written book on pottery. I have had it for years, then I lost it in a fire and found it through Amazon.com. The book contains beautifully photographed examples and very clear step-by-step instructions on each technique for working with clay. This book out of my collection of art instruction books that I have lost, is the first one I replaced. I suggest it to anyone who is learning to squeeze clay, or to anyone who would like to try some very creative techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extruuuuude
This is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to learn more about extruded ceramics. I think the author should put up a picture of the cover as soon as possible.

The best thing about this book is that it's project-oriented, and the projects are things you would really want to make. I was truly inspired by this book and appreciated the author's attention to detail. The photos are gorgeous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth owning!
This book has MANY color photographs of a wide variety of different types of extruded ceramic works. It gives an excellent overview of things done mostly in recent years, and offers inspiration and direction to ceramicartists who owns extruders and those who are thinking of buying one. Thereare also several projects described and shown in the book step by step. Theauthor has focused on showing the wide range of works that can be createdusing an extruder, including showing the die shapes used.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's about time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Book of Ceramics Satisfaction
This book shows step-by-step processes for working with clay that are accompanied by written and verbal explanations. The book is comprehensive and perfect for those beginning or intermediate level ceramicists. As an art teacher, I find the descriptions and sequential nature of the book incredibly useful. The book came as described--sealed, new from the publisher. Through Amazon, I found the best prices for the book and am happy with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to treasure
A true guide on technique,
but also to build excitment and passion for this craft.

2-0 out of 5 stars neither very big nor very useful
Pleasing to the eye but it surely fails to live up to the promise of its title. The instructions on constructing and throwing pots is adequate (though scanty). The sections on other aspects of the craft are more an outline than a guide. Disappointed, I searched our local community college library and found several comprehensive instructional texts on ceramics that were bigger and better than this book - though most were written 30 years ago.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a helpful resource for learning on the wheel
I was disappointed after receiving this book. While it gave a nice overview of different types of ceramics, it did not give the detailed information I was looking for. The summary on wheel throwing was relatively small and gave virtually no information regarding types of wheels or information on selecting one.The description of the book does seem a bit misleading...leading one to believe that this book would be an invaluable, detailed reference source.I found this not to be the case and would not recommend it for those looking for a reference document. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview, excellent examples and illustrations
Angelica Pozo offers a thorough overview of the process of making and installing handmade tiles. She covers the process from beginning to end, explaining the basics of each step very well. There are lots of photos -- and in good quality -- to follow each step. The book covers how to avoid common tile problems, such as warping. Pozo's techniques are not always dependent on having lots of equipment to make tiles. She shows how to make tiles using a rolling pin, as well as on a slab roller. Bullnose tile can be made with an extruder or by bending the clay over wood forms. Pozo also describes mosaic installation, using a detailed numbering system. If you are interested in making and installing tile, Pozo's book is a place to start.

The essential basics of preparing very low fire raw manufactured moist clay into a tileand the absolute basics of glaze/ slipdecoration styles, with a few projects to illustrate potential in the above . 1-0 out of 5 stars Not for home studios, not worth $100
I am planning a home studio approx. 12X15 (180sf) in space. This book on building a ceramic studio is a lovely overview and picture book of several professional studios in southern climes, which I am not in and ranged size from 375sf to 5,000sf.Also, it was advertised on Amazon.com as retailing for $144.67, but I bought a used copy for $29.00 and feeling pretty good about the savings. It is printed right on the interior of the book jacket that the publisher's retail price is $24.95.

This is not a critique of the contents of the book. But when I thought it was a $100 value, I assumed I was getting THE bible of home studios.Instead: the pictures were lovely, the info for professional artists planning a studio and showroom are probably good, but anyone at that level of the craft probably already knew alot of the info. And it was definitely not worth more than the original retail. Not too relevant for a home potter in New England.

1-0 out of 5 stars Are YOU rich?
This book annoyed me as it is for people with plenty of money to throw at an architecturally designed, no holds barred, studio space. How many artists have this kind of money? As has been said too, it offers no practical advice for measuring, designing or actually setting up the actual studio.
Waste of time buying this unless you just want to look at pretty photos of idyllic conditions.

2-0 out of 5 stars underwhelmed

Product Description

Pottery making is one of the oldest and most widespread of human activities, with a history that can be traced back to the Stone Age. Stylistic and technical changes over time reveal a great deal about the societies in which the pottery was made, so that clay vessels serve as essential cultural and dating indicators, as well as objects of individual skill and creativity.

This lavishly illustrated and comprehensive account begins with the earliest civilizations of the Near East and Middle East and follows the production of pottery chronologically around the globe, from the Mediterranean and the Orient to the Islamic world and ancient America, from neolithic Britain to the factories of Wedgwood and de Morgan, from contemporary Africa and India to Scandinavia and Australasia. The final chapters analyze the development of ceramics as a medium of personal expression by artists and studio potters during the twentieth century.

This is the fourth edition of a work that has been deemed a classic since its first publication in 1972 and, for this new edition, has been completely revised, expanded, and redesigned, with new illustrations throughout. The illustrations are drawn from museums, collectors, and practicing potters across the word and offer representative examples of the major styles, materials, and forms of all periods, allowing us to make comparisons and see relationships between the works of potters who may be widely separated in space and time.

Product Description
Renowned ceramic artist Karen Karnes has created some of the most iconic pottery of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The body of work she has produced in her more than sixty years in the studio is remarkable for its depth, personal voice, and consistent innovation. Many of her pieces defy category, invoking body and landscape, pottery and sculpture, male and female, hand and eye.

Equally compelling are Karnes's experiences in some of the most significant cultural settings of her generation: from the worker-owned cooperative housing of her childhood, to Brooklyn College under modernist Serge Chermayeff, to North Carolina's avant-garde Black Mountain College, to the Gate Hill Cooperative in Stony Point, New York, which Karnes helped establish as an experiment in integrating art, life, family, and community.

This book, designed to accompany an exhibit of Karnes's works organized by Peter Held, curator of ceramics for the Arizona State University Art Museum's Ceramic Research Center, offers a comprehensive look at the life and work of Karnes. Edited by highly regarded studio potter Mark Shapiro, it combines essays by leading critics and scholars with color reproductions of more than sixty of her works, providing new perspectives for understanding the achievements of this extraordinary artist. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars instructions for making simple molds
does a fine job with simple molds. I was hoping for a more advanced text on more complicated 3 and 4 piece molds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book....
This is an essential for anyone interested in mold making & producing molds from pieces you have made & would like to duplicate in uniformity.

It also has good examples & photos to explain the process.I would have liked more on the area of the clay bodies used in casting and the unique properties and problems you may encounter vs. the properties of the plaster to make the molds. As references go, this is a probably the best I've read & would highly recommend it for anyone interested in casting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Mold Making Book on the Market!
Andrew Martin's "The Essential Guide to Mold Making & Slip Casting" is simply THE definitive book on the process of making molds. The first edition was a challange to the beginner, but this new edition with many photos of every step really helps bring the art of mold making to every skill level. 5-0 out of 5 stars a fantastic how-to for beginners and experts alike
Mastandrea's sharp eye for color is matched by her ability to articulate in step-by-step format the techniques for beautiful ceramic pieces. Techniques include how to do sponge painting, plaids, stamp painting, which brushes to use for which effects--enough information for someone who's never painted ceramics before but not so much that an experienced painter might find condescending. The projects included in the book are cheery, bright, and motivational. I highly recommend this book for any painter who has recently discovered paint-your-own ceramics studios but doesn't know where or how to start. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
I was very happy with the quality and overall handling of the book.It also arrived very quickly.Wonderful.

1-0 out of 5 stars not for the advanced potter
I thought this book would be more of an glaze application workshop with techniques & effects since there is so little out there on the subject.I was sadly disapointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars not a very goog buy
I didn't find this book interesting, it doesn't help you the way others can help. I have 3 books of this colection and all of them are weak.

1-0 out of 5 stars A waste of time and money
If you are seriously looking for good information or ideas, look else where. We got three of the books in this series and found them all a waste of time and money. We can't even feel good about trying to re sell them.

1-0 out of 5 stars this book is horrible
Around my studio we had a copy of this book that no one would take and everyone laughed at.The work shown in the book is terrible- i mean really really bad art- dated and just ugly. The glazes are dated too- some even using lead (a poison that should only be used if you really know what you are doing). The only plus i can say for this book is that it has luster recipes -something i've never seen anywhere else(it's made of frit and bismouth subnitrate or something) all in all BUY A DIFFERENT BOOK! there are much better ones out there or start getting magazines (ceramics monthly and claytimes) that always have lots of glaze recipes and articles. ... Product Description
Crystalline glazes have a magical quality that appeals to many ceramicists. Unfortunately, producing these glazes can be technically difficult.

Diane Creber tackles the problems involved in using this challenging medium. She describes the clays and kilns most suitable, explains how to glaze, provides glaze recipes, and discusses how to fire in both oxidation and reduction conditions. She also briefly sketches the history of crystalline glazes.

A useful guide to this exciting subject, Crystalline Glazes is perfect for both the student and the practiced potter experimenting with this technique. The second edition includes a new chapter, profiling the work of 14 potters from around the globe. These artists discuss their approaches, techniques, and recipes for achieving successful crystalline glazes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Accurate...
Well, for me, this book has shared a lot of useful information and tips on how to come up with ones own crystalline base glaze. Then, it explains how to achieve different crystal/background colors by experimenting with different oxides, along with nice, consistent firing schedules that I have tried and have gotten great results from. One must understand that a glaze recipe might be good in one area, but does not always work out in another area. So far, my results are pretty on point with what is shown in the book, and I found that really astounding. I give this book 5/5, and having it is a must whether your a rookie or experienced with crystalline glazes.

3-0 out of 5 stars better than last, but still lacking
I thought the organization of this book is still messed up.Some useful things, but skimpy on real how-to info and not my first recommendation.

3-0 out of 5 stars good information if you're firing cone 10
Almost all of the glaze recipes and firing schedules designed for very high-fire kilns (cone 10 and above).More information on achieving the intended effects at stoneware temperatures (cone 5-7) would have been more useful to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!Material is hard to hard on Crystalline Glazes...
this is the most comprehensive book I've found. It has firing techniques, lots of glaze information and the technical information you need without it being overwhelming.

4-0 out of 5 stars Diane Creber "Crystalline Glazes"
This is a well written book dealing with crystalline glazes. If you have tried to find material on crystalline glazes you will realize how scarce it is.I have tried four of her glaze formulas and followed her instructionon firing.

Results:Two terrific glazes, one very nice glaze, and onewhich remained underdeveloped. ... Read more

Product Description
Everyone interested in pottery and crafts will find this practical guide a valuable addition to both bookshelf and workshop. Penny Simpson, an English potter living in Japan, and Kanji Sodeoka, her Japanese colleague, have compiled a step-by-step manual of the way pots are made in Japan, their forms, and their decorations. The authors give a thorough account of both traditional and modern techniques and also describe in detail tools, materials, glazes, and the setup of workshops and kilns. Lucy Kitto's lettering and sprightly drawings infuse each page with life and clarity.

Pottery terms and expressions are listed with their Japanese equivalents, making it possible for the Western potter to arrive at a more intimate understanding of Japanese pottery and, when necessary, to communicate with Japanese potters in their own language. A godsend to potters, students, and collectors, this book will be especially welcome to the growing number of potters who come into direct contact with their Japanese counterparts either at home or in Japan. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Jananese Pottery Handbook
I teach pottery and always have at least one Jananese student in my class. (Some times they speak very little English)
This is the most basic pottery book. There are no color photos but what wonderful step by step instructional sketches, the sheer number of forms and different designs is truly Awesome.
This book is written both in English and in Japanese.I can't tell you how much this book has help bridge the language barrier (I speak Zero Japanese).
My students both Japanese and American love the book.Worth every penny.

5-0 out of 5 stars great deal
This is an excellent book for the price! Simple and straight forward, it's a great learning tool and gives you some good basic info.

5-0 out of 5 stars English/ Japanese terminology
A very basic handbook if you are looking for pottery techniques, but invaluable for the English/ Japanese translations and terminology in hiragana, katakana and kanji for the Western potter who travels to Japan. Not many books around that gives one access to this terminology to enable one todiscuss ceramics with the Japanese potter. The terminology regarding forms, descriptions, glazes, underglazes, etc are exellent, with helpfull maps on kiln sites and the different wares found in the different regions of Japan.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Japanese Pottery Handbook
This informative and delightful book is a must for any potter. With charming and clear illustrations the authors provide information on tools, workshops, forming, decorations, kilns, etc. Even common problems areillustrated! China has the longest and most highly developed ceramic tradition in the world, encompassing early Neolithic earthenwares, the finely glazed stoneware pieces of the Song period, and the years of Imperial patronage and export ware for the new markets of the West. Most studies of Chinese art deal with types, period or styles, but this historical examination of Chinese ceramics, which uses recent research, explains how the evolution of pottery depended upon the technological developments of the Chinese culture. The book's practical approach makes full use of archaeological reports to show how differing geographical areas, materials and developing technology all shaped the evolution of Chinese ceramics. ...
