Product Description
Cerebral palsy (CP) is an umbrella term encompassing a group of non-progressive, non-contagious motor conditions that cause physical disability in human development, chiefly in the various areas of body movement. Cerebral refers to the cerebrum, which is the affected area of the brain (although the disorder most likely involves connections between the cortex and other parts of the brain such as the cerebellum), and palsy refers to disorder of movement. CP is caused by damage to the motor control centers of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy (about 75 percent), during childbirth (about 5 percent) or after birth (about 15 percent) up to about age three. Further research is needed on adults with CP as the current literature is highly focused on the pediatric patient. Cerebral palsy describes a group of permanent disorders of the development of movement and posture, causing activity limitation, that are attributed to nonprogressive disturbances that occurred in the developing fetal or infant brain. ... Product Description

The medical treatment and education of children with cerebral palsy is complex and involves a diverse range of professionals. Moreover, there are a number of different approaches for treating pediatric musculoskeletal impairments, such as therapy, orthotics, and surgery. Dr. Miller?s valuable resource helps members of the medical team navigate the complexity of cerebral palsy care. Readers will become familiar with treatments that fall outside of their own disciplines while also benefiting from a review of current practices in their own fields.

This comprehensive reference outlines the etiology of cerebral palsy and presents a description of muscle tone and movement problems. Dr. Miller discusses the theory and techniques used by physical and occupational therapists, and he provides suggestions for implementing an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Since the text focuses on improving decision making, recommended treatment algorithms address common questions, such as how to select equipment. Comprehensive coverage of understanding abnormal gaits, as well as the use of braces and wheel chairs, is incorporated into the text.

Surgeons will especially appreciate the section that focuses on anatomy and describes surgeries and specific local treatments. Chapters are enhanced by beautiful anatomical drawings depicting key techniques.

A companion CD-ROM includes videos of children with walking problems and more than 400 interactive study questions.

Product Description
The 4th edition of Finnie's Handling the Young Child with Cerebral Palsy at Home has been updated to reflect the current practices of today. It aims to help parents assist their child with cerebral palsy (CP) towards achieving the most comfortable independence in all activities. It is hoped to show how, by using typical parenting skills, which involve guiding and exposing a child to develop through challenging experiences, the child with CP will also develop. The book is also intended to help professionals and other carers new to this field understand, support and encourage young children with CP and their families.

Over the years since the first edition of this book was written ideas on appropriate therapies have changed and developed. Similarly opinion on early intervention has changed and the method of delivery of service has in some places moved from centralisation to home-based or community provision. The emphasis of this new edition however remains on a holistic approach to the child's needs seeing the difficulties in relation to the overall development of the child as a unique person from childhood to adulthood.

  • Assessment procedures and prediction of future abilities
  • Management of problems (including medication if appropriate) such as epilepsy, constipation, eneurisis, nourishment, difficulty with sleeping, crying, temper tantrums, sensory deficits and deformity
  • Stimulation, fitness, problem solving, compensatory strategies and ease of management

  • New chapters include Neuroimaging, Epilepsy, Emotional health, Orthotics, Spasticity management, and Complementary and alternative medicine
  • Over 460 revised illustrations showing different pieces of equipment which may be helpful and ways of holding and moving a child with cerebral palsy
  • Chapters on Sleeping, Feeding, Lifting and Carrying, Toileting, Communication and Fine motor movement have been completely re-written by a professional specialising in the particular field

2-0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed the first 9 pages!
Not much to this book. Zacharias Cricket costs more than the average children's paperback picture book, but doesn't offer anything spectacular. My wife (who has Cerebral Palsy) and I read Zacharias Cricket together and decided we like the first half of the book (the first 9 pages), but not rest. The book starts with cute drawings and rhyme but Zacharias Cricket quickly becomes a plea to help kids in wheelchairs "always have a very special day". It's not a bad book but there are many other choices that are better quality and less expensive. I bought this book from Amazon.com because 1) Zacharias Cricket is new (2007), 2) there were no copies available at any libraries in my state of Colorado, 3) there were no reviews of the book and 4) our family is always looking for great children's books on disability. Children's books I would recommend which feature a friend in a wheelchair include: Best Friend on Wheels: A Concept Book, A Rainbow of Friendsand My Pal, Victor / Mi amigo, Victor (Bilingual in English and Spanish). 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring tale about a child coping with disability
"Nathan's Wish: A Story About Cerebral Palsy" is a well-written book that addresses the challenges faced by a young boy, Nathan, who suffers from cerebral palsy. Nathan's next-door neighbor, Miss Sandy, is a raptor rehabilitator and one day she rescues a screech owl with a broken wing. Nathan empathizes with the injured bird as he witnesses the bird's futile attempts to free itself from its cage, though its too weak to do so. This is how Nathan himself feels - he feels trapped by his lack of mobility, confined to his wheelchair or walker. When Fire, the screech owl loses its appetite and becomes listless due to lack of activity, Nathan tries his best to find a solution - resulting in a happy outcome for all. Nathan too finds that he can help out after all, in more ways than one.

As classrooms in the United States become more inclusive, it is imperative that children and young adults learn about some of the disabilities faced by their peers such as cerebral palsy, autism, ADHD, etc. This book is pitched perfectly for children grades K-3, and I would highly recommend it for school libraries. It is also a wonderful book for parents to read with their children and discuss the issues within. The color illustrations are vivid and enhance the narrative. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fly Like an Eagle!
"I want to fly like an eagle, till I'm free.Fly like an eagle, let my spirit carry me." -- Steve Miller Band, 1976

Nathan is a young boy who has cerebral palsy. He uses a walker and a wheelchair for mobility.

Nathan's neighbor, Ms. Sandy is a raptor rehabilitator. She takes in injured raptors (birds of prey) and nurses them back to health. In time, she retains them to survive in their natural habitat.

Nathan dearly wishes he could be more helpful to Ms. Sandy and her birds. When an injured female owl named Fire is brought to her, it is Nathan who helps Ms. Sandy work with her.The bird's wing is broken and had to be reset; while Fire is healing, Nathan cleans the aviaries and fills the water pails.

In time, the owl's wing heals.Eager to be on her way, she tries to fly, only to crash to the ground.Dispirited, Fire languishes in the cage while Ms. Sandy explains to Nathan that she cannot be returned to the wild with that traumatized wing.Nathan bonds with the bird, knowing just how painful it is to wish for freedom and mobility, only to find it inaccessible. He brainstorms to come up with an idea to help the bird.

Going online, Nathan reads about injured female birds acting as "mama" birds to orphan birds.Suggesting this to Ms. Sandy, the pair bring some orphaned owlets to Fire. That is very heartwarming, as is Fire's feeding the little owlets.

This is a beautiful and very moving story that might make you cry.The boy's love for the bird and the parallels he sees in his own life and that of the bird named Fire are truly heartwarming. It is this kind of indomitable spirit that makes one think of the Steve Miller 1976 classic, "Fly Like an Eagle." ... Product Description
For most children with cerebral palsy, the extent to which they can use their hands is critical to their overall development. Over the last two decades there have been major advances in the understanding of hand function. Particularly in children with cerebral palsy, assessment of hand function has become more exact and the range of possible interventions has expanded. Changes in treatment approaches can be seen in neurorehabilitation, orthopaedic management, developmental pediatrics and rehabilitation including occupational and physical therapy practices.
In this book, selected experts from around the world in the fields of neuroimaging, neurology, orthopaedics, anatomy, motor control and motor learning provide fundamental theoretical information for the development of hand function in children with cerebral palsy. The book also shows how theory can be translated into practice by clinicians who provide assessment and intervention services to improve hand use in this population in sections written by researchers in occupational and physical therapy. Linking different fields of knowledge, this book highlights new perspectives and provides the best evidence for different types of intervention. By focusing only on hand function this essential book highlights new concepts for clinicians and others working towards the overall well-being of children with cerebral palsy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review by Frederick S. Cramer, M.D.
Dr. Richard Neubauer has created a must-read for all parents, family members and other caregivers of children with cerebral palsy or other brain injury. He has taken a complex medical subject and explained it such that people without specific medical training can understand. This book is equally suited to readers interested in learning more about either cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury, with both topics handled well and without confusion.Cerebral palsy is a multi-factorial term for hypoxic brain injury in the peri-birth time period.i.e. in-utero or during the birth process, something causes the interruption of the normal blood supply and oxygen to the brain of the baby. The other type of brain injury in the young child is traumatic - e.g. near drowning, suffocation or motor vehicle/bicycle accident.

"Hyperbaric Oxygenation for Cerebral Palsy and the Brain-Injured Child" excels in meeting one of the most urgent needs of a parent with a recently injured child - the need for factual credible medical information.Dr. Neubauer includes a clear discussion of the underlying physiology of the brain and how it works, followed by the mechanics of cerebral plasy and brain injury that provides a solid foundation for later discussions related to treatment. He then introduces a new and sophisticated diagnostic technique called Single Photon Emission Computer Tomography (SPECT).SPECT scanning is of particular interest with regard to brain-injured children because it represents an opportunity to objectively access brain function in patients with cerebral palsy or brain injury - a capability that adds significant science to what might otherwise be simply anecdotal observations of patient improvement.

It is with this background that Dr. Neubauer provides readers with the foundation to understand the principle thesis of his book - that intermittent, high-dose oxygen administered as a drug directly addresses the pathophysiology of brain injury, leading to sometimes rearkable improvements in brain function and quality of life.He explains the medical basis for Hyperbaric Oxygenation Therapy (HBOT), along with a thorough discussion of why HBO can, and does in his opinion, fundamentally improve brain function in children with cerebral palsy or traumatic brain injury.Dr. Neubauer concludes with a pragmatic discussion of costs, insurance, acceptance by the medical community at large, and how to find a HBOT center that is skilled in the treatment of children with cerebral palsy or brain injury.

While this book is not intended as an academic discourse on the subject of cerebral palsy and traumatic brain injury, Dr Neubauer provides a realistic perspective that not every patient will respond to HBOT.He notes that each child is different and only 70-80% can be expected to respond favorably. This is why SPECT scan is stressed as an objective technique for the parents to realize whether there is any hope for their child. For example, if the SPECT scan does not improve after six months of treatment, the child is not likely to respond.

Lastly, the book also includes several examples of clinical success with various children, with perhaps the most compelling being Rebecca Nemeth written by her father.Mr. Nemeth shares his experience of fear and frustration, along with the hope and joy realized through the improved quality of life his daughter has experienced following HBOT.

"Hyperbaric Oxygenation for Cerebral Palsy and the Brain-Injured Child" promises to remain the defining book for parents for many years to come.
