Product Description
Biopesticides Series, No. 1During recent decades there has been a steady increase in the use of chemical pesticides in both developed and developing countries. This has caused widespread concern about their impact on human health and on the environment. This is particularly the case in less developed countries which may lack appropriate resources to minimise risks and rectify problems. The purpose of this short book is to provide a review of: Chemical pesticide markets, including global figures, exports from developed countries, and markets in Latin America, Asia and Africa Information on the scale of manufacture, import, export and use of chemical pesticides Examples of direct risks to human welfare in terms of acute poisonings caused by occupational exposure and pesticide residues in food Examples of problems with the storage of obsolete stocks of pesticides in developing countries. The focus is on acute problems in developing countries, particularly in Latin America, Asia and Africa, but some information is also provided about developed countries. This is the first volume in a new 'Biopesticides Series' developed by the Biopesticides Programme at CABI Bioscience. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Unimolecular reactions are in principle the simplest chemical reactions, because they only involve one molecule. The basic mechanism, in which the competition between the chemical reaction step and a collisional deactivation leads to a pressure-dependent coefficient, has been understood for a long time. However, this is a rapidly developing field, and many new and important discoveries have been made in the past decade.

This First Part Part of Two CCK Volumes dealing with Unimolecular Rections, deals with the Reaction Step. The first chapter is an introduction to the whole project, aiming to cover the material necessary to understand the content of the detailed chapters, as well as the history of the development of the area. Chapter 2 is a review of the modern view of the statistical theories, as embodied in the various forms of RRKM theory. Chapter 3 deals with the fully quantum mechanical view of reactive states as resonances.

. Presents considerable advances in the field made during the last decade.
. Treats both the statistical as well as the fully quantum mechanical view. ... Read more

Product Description
This book features a systematic study conducted regarding the mass spectrometric characteristics of GC-MS and LC-MS-MS and GPC behaviours characteristics for 858 pesticides, and a GC-MS analytical database established for 541 pesticides, a LC-MS-MS analytical database for 629 pesticides and a GPC behavioural characteristic database for 751 pesticides. Under the GC-MS and LC-MS-MS optimised analytical conditions based on these database, a series of the comparison testes were completed. 486 pesticides and related chemicals in 5 kinds of grain samples such as wheat, barley, rice, maize and oats were pre-treated by ASE extraction and SPE cleanup as well as 465 pesticides were pre-treated by homogeneous and shaking extraction and GPC cleanup. A GC-MS analytical method has been established for determination of 475 pesticides in grains and cereals, and same as LC-MS-MS analytical method for determination of 372 pesticides and related chemicals. ... Product Description
There seems to be a general decrease in the interest level of the popular press and the population as a whole in the "new biotechnology". However, the more traditional biotechnology, that associated with the development of bioprocessing systems, has continued to progress and has now matured to the extent that process engineering applications can be seriously considered. This is certainly evident in this Fifth Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuels and Chemicals where the formal program includes papers on engineering developments and process engineering. The goal of this meeting was to bring together the various disciplines and institutions involved in developing viable, new biotechnology, primarily for the conversion of renewable resources including waste materials to fuels and chemical feedstocks. A major emphasis has been bioprocess engineering. As in past meetings in this series, applied and basic research in thermal/chemical processing and bioconversion of various types of biomass were also included as was a special topic on separations. Several discussion groups were also organized. ... Read more

From the supplier: A recent report by 'The Environmental Monitor,' a quarterly survey of 1,500 Canadians on environmental issues made by the Environics Research Group of Toronto, showed that 35% are concerned about the use of chemicals in agriculture and 34% about the loss of agricultural land to urban development. The use, disposal and manufacture of toxic chemicals is the main concern of the majority of those surveyed, followed by water quality, depletion of the ozone layer, disposal of municipal and industrial waste, air quality and the transport of hazardous materials.
