Product Description
There is widespread public concern about the effects of nitrate derived from farming on water quality and public health. But research on nitrate during the past decade has revealed wide discrepancies between public perceptions and reality. The main problems from nitrate are ecological changes in coastal and estuarine waters and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere. This gas, largely derived from nitrate, is a threat to the ozone layer in the stratosphere and is also a greenhouse gas. This book builds on Farming, Fertilizers and the Nitrate Problem (CABI, 1991) by Addiscott, Whitmore and Powlson but has been restructured to take account of new developments and to bring out more clearly the role of politicians and economists in the 'nitrate problem'. ... Product Description
In recent years a number of long-term global food supply-demand projections have been made. Though there is considerable disagreement, all are unanimous about one point - that demand will double by the year 2025. This increase is due to the combined effects of population and income growth. As the purchasing power of millions of people in third world countries rise, the first thing they do is alter their diet to consume more fresh fruit and vegetables and more animal protein. Whether this planet has to grow three times as much food or "only" twice as much, growing it in a manner that protects the quality of the environment is the problem examined by this book. To attain the goal will require a high technology, science-based agriculture around the globe and this book explores the use of agro-chemicals and their effects. ... Read more

Product Description
Modeling Chemical Transport in Soils: Natural and Applied Contaminants provides a comprehensive discussion of mathematical models used to anticipate and predict the consequences and fate of natural and applied chemicals. The book evaluates the strengths, weaknesses, and possibilities for application of numerous models used throughout the world. It examines the theoretical support and need for experimental calibration for each model. The book also reviews world literature to discuss such topics as the movement of sorbed chemicals by soil erosion, the movement of reactive and nonreactive chemicals in the subsurface and groundwater, and salt transport in the landscape. Modeling Chemical Transport in Soils: Natural and Applied Contaminants is an important volume for environmental scientists, agricultural engineers, regulatory personnel, farm managers, consultants, and the chemical industry. ... Product Description
Worldwide concern for more environmentally friendly agriculture has provoked interest, particularly in developing countries, in agricultural biotechnology. While many developing countries have embarked on biotechnology research, few biotechnology applications have yet to reach the farmer's field. This study, based principally on country experiences, calls for an integrated approach to biotechnology, in which national priorities for research are firmly linked to the objectives set for, and problems confronting agriculture. It also argues in favor of public/rivate partnerships and, on the part of the donor community, for long-term funding. ...
