5-0 out of 5 stars Foundations of a College Chemistry.
It is a great book, easy to understand, and is perfect for a self study.

4-0 out of 5 stars Product review

The book was a great deal, but was not in new condition like the seller stated. It was in good condition with some wear, but overall still a good deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great product!
This was a lab book, so I expected some of the pages to be written on. Other than that, I received a great book. The shipping was so fast too; the book came after 2 days of placing my order. I would definitely buy from this seller again!

5-0 out of 5 stars jimp
I am amazed at just how good a book this is. I did not do well in chemistry in high school and always wanted to go back and try again. I bought a "Chemistry for Dummies book" which was junk. It was hard to understand. This book though is exceptionally easy and I finally am understanding things about the physical world that I wish I had known earlier in life. Anyone who is interested in chemistry should definitely own this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Contents of book relates directly to title
This is a great book. As the title entails, FOUNDATIONS of college chem. and the contents of the book is exactly just that. I would have given the book five stars , but I think they should have done a better job of the solutions manual , explaining some of the answers more thoroughly when it comes to the practice questions, some of the answers you just , well , GET answers with no through explanation to why that is the answer, for SOME, not all. And when it comes to the "Putting it all together" test at the end of every couple of chapters when you solidify what you learned, they only give the ANSWER ONLY in the BACK of the textbook , and not the solutions manual where they should SHOW how all the problems are solved. The "Putting it together" portion of the book has the hardest questions and seriously NEEDS worked through answers to be put on the solutions manual( this is a very critical mistake, in part of the author, especially for someone priming for general chemistry without taking a chem class in his life. ) .

Other than that , the book is a fantastic read. I bought this book a month and a half ago and im on my final 3 chapters. I never took a chem class in my LIFE, and as I am preparing to go into my first class in General chemistry this January, I feel confident that I will have the foundation to get that a in class. One thing about this book , is that it doesnt cover thermo dynamics among other things, which may be just an advanced topic for gen chem and not that of this book, and a couple other topics, which regrettably I am going to purchase a real general chemistry book after this book before I hit my first gen chem class. But other than that GOOD BOOK. definitely need to buy the solutions manual with this book though.

Reasons to Buy this book :

- Easy reading compared to the more cryptic competitors
- Explains concepts in the simplest of terms so anyone can understand
- Gets straight to the point
- Explains ALL the fundamentals to get you ready for 1st year general chemistry. Depending on what university you go to, you actually learn most of the first semester of chemistry in this book also.
- The determined student with no prior chemistry like me can finish this book , casually within a 2 month or less period.

issues that author should fix :

- Better and more thorough explanation of problems in solutions manual for a serious amount of problems.( a lot of problems are explained thoroughly but just as many are not)

- Putting it together test at the end of every couple chapters need to have worked out problems in the solutions manual.

- should have a test at the end of the book to cover every single topic to solidify learning.

What should the student buy to accompany this book?

- Real first year general chemistry book to cover parts missed from this book if your a student majoring in chemistry.

- Flash cards

- Video tutorials

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Extra Help for AP Chemistry Exam
My teacher for AP Chemistry would always give us sections in the book to do. It did not cover everything for the AP chemistry exam but it did help with all of the tougher "actual chemistry". This book focuses much more on the actual problem solving and math than on the concepts and theories. I would recommend this workbook for anyone who is in AP Chem. It will not replace a teacher or a normal AP Chem book but it is a great supplement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry made not so scary
I received this book and was very skeptical that Chemistry could truly be self-taught.I was amazed at how quickly I was flying through the chapters. There are so many great things about this book. Each chapter is divided into numbered segments. There are self-check questions for each segment. You can quickly test yourself on whether you grasp the concept before moving on.Then at the end of each chapter is a quiz. Each question has the segment in which the question correlates to.If you get the question wrong, you can easily go back and referrence why.The book uses great analogies for things like electron configurations, etc. which makes all the concepts easy to understand. The book is organized in a logical method and is easy to follow and progress from concept to concept.I had bought other Chemistry books and this one is by far the best one suited for me.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for a Review or Supplement
I bought this to review for a test after not having thought about chemistry for several years.Overall, the work is strong as a review or as a supplement to another more in-depth text. You will proceed from the most basic concepts to the harder work of applying those concepts to chemistry problems.

If you are primarily a visual learner, I would speak against this text as a base of learning because there are no pictures to illustrate what can be some very hard concepts to conceptualize and pictures do help.Another weakness of the work is that it is based primarily on answering questions. This is important and helpful, but the structure is such that the answers are just below the questions.

The layout makes it hard to sometimes answer the questions as the answers are directly below it.If you do buy this text, I would recommend finding and printing out a periodic table to refer to as the included table is rather short on information and the periodic table is a very powerful tool for understanding the science of chemistry

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Bought to help my wife take a tough Chemistry class and it helped her a lot!

4-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry and more
For all you beginers in this course. This is a great book to start with.It helps understand formulas and equations better then ever.A must have!

1-0 out of 5 stars Better as a chemistry review, not a source book
I was trying to find a decent introductory book on chemistry as a refresher. Textbooks go for $150 these days, and this looked like a good choice. Be aware that it has very little explanation in it. It is primarily lists of questions with the correct answer displayed under the question. Not helpful at all for someone who has never had a chemistry course, and it is certainly not a self-teaching guide.

Had this book been named and described accurately, I would not have bought it and would not have given it a rating of one star. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Material Science Companion
The authors have done a fantastic job of presenting general chemistry with a material science flavor. Each chapter clearly presents materials and their effects on our lives as well as demonstrations to help the educator present the material to their classes. We have the students use the text as a reference for a 'materials lab' in our general chemistry course and the students loved it.The text, if adopted for a class, has lab experiments containing clear lists of all parts and equipment needed as well as suggested sources. The experiments range for simple tests to complete property studies or synthetic processes. We found the text compliments experiments from other sources very well.

I would rate this text as a 'must have' for any professor teaching general, introductory, or citizen's level chemistries. There is something here for everyone! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ...
The book I received was In excellent condition, however there were several more pages missing than described.I would love to return this book, but for what I paid for it, its not worth the trouble.

5-0 out of 5 stars Laboratory Manual for Principles of General Chemistry
The lab manual was selling at my college bookstore for nearly twice the price. I purchased it at amazon instead, it was brand new and was delivered promptly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great lab manual.
I am taking Chemistry Laboratory as a college freshman, and this is the required textbook. It's a great lab manual with detailed procedures and good technique descriptions. The book came in about 2 weeks and it was cheaper on amazon than at my school bookstore (like almost every book). The book is paperback and has holes so you can put it in a binder if you want. The pages are perforated so it's easy to tear them out. Oh, make sure you check with your professor and get the correct edition -- you don't want to buy a different book than the rest of your class.

3-0 out of 5 stars Meh...
I used this book as a freshmen (now a junior) in college and am hoping perhaps a professor or two would wander around different sites to get student opinions on different textbooks, such as this one.

As a lab manual, especially for a freshmen chemistry student, who may or may not be continuing on to organic chemistry, the instructions need to be as clear and unambiguous as possible.Pre-laboratory questions assigned for homework should have their process or underlying theory explained within the chapters and of course, each student should expect to achieve a higher understanding of their lecture material and techniques used by chemists to identify basic chemical properties.

--So to break it down--

Quality/clarity of instructions:

My freshmen chemistry class performed roughly 30 of the experiments found within the book, ranging from identifying basic properties like density, molecular weight, volume, etc. to titration and spectrophotometer techniques, to calculating rate constants, pH, pKa, etc.We covered at least one experiment from each of the major sections in the book.

However, as I, my professor, and the students using the book last year were to find out, we spent a considerable bit more time in the classroom beforehand discussing what the book was trying to get across to us, hammering out the details about quantities involved, etc. than the professor would have originally intended for.The introductory labs do not suffer this flaw because they are likely adapted from a number of older manuals used in the past and are very friendly to teacher and student. It is when you reach the latter half of the first semester/second quarter and enter the second half of the introductory course that a number of labs begin to trip up everyone. For a number of labs in the second half of the year, I remember our lab instructor reading the instructions with the same blank-faced stare we gave them--several experiments had to be completely rewritten by the professor to avoid confusing us.

This ambiguity certainly hurts its effectiveness as a learning material, but the confusion usually stemmed from a few steps being unclear per lab, not the entire lab being trash--except the several mentioned above.More often than not, the ambiguity could be resolved by the professor but it took a considerable portion of our lab time away to be spent in the lecture room making sure we knew what it was we were doing.

Nature of pre-laboratory assignments:

Pre-lab assignments are geared at making sure the student understands the main objectives of the lab, understands any calculations involved, like pH, pKA, rate constants, etc. by providing examples they have to solve for, and with a few labs, understanding safety instructions or proper usage/application of a particular instrument/process.

The intent is well-founded, most of the questions are excellent preparation tools, however, most of the pre-labs we were asked to do had one or two questions that, for lack of a better term, were simply absent of explanation in the manual. While it is important to get across the underlying theory behind an experiment, it is also essential that a question asked about the material in the chapter, also had the material that is being asked about IN the chapter to begin with. These types of questions typically dealt with applying theory that went above and beyond what was discussed in lecture and with what the manual itself would cover in its explanations. It is considerably harder to learn the material effectively if it simply isn't covered to begin with.

Keep in mind, these questions aren't ridiculously common (multiple in every lab), but they do snake their way into most of the chapters.

Effectiveness of the labs (as a whole) in preparing a student for further education in chemistry, or as a general introduction for those who do not continue:

Honestly, I felt I spent more time worrying about getting my pre-labs correct and understanding what we were doing to begin with than actually learning it.Some of the techniques used in the labs I found to be great introductions to things I learned in organic and learning the various equipment used by chemists, etc.My inorganic labs this year are made up by the professor and are as clear as they need to be, with all quantities listed, materials used, techniques used, temperatures needed, etc.I don't spend so much time learning what I need to perform in lab and I can use this time to understand WHY I am performing the lab and WHY it works in the first place. This should be the goal of a student's lab time, by complimenting the lecture portion with an adequate understanding of theory, such that one can adequately explain why they can perform that reaction, or why that technique is effective for identifying a concentration, pH, rate constant, etc.

As a student, I would recommend this book overall, it isn't terrible, but it doesn't do the actual science behind it any justice and that's where the book fails and creates a disconnect between the lab and lecture materials.

5-0 out of 5 stars wath I looking for

5-0 out of 5 stars schaum series chemistry

5-0 out of 5 stars 3,000 Solved Problems in Chemistry is good
I will use it to freshen up my college skills that I've forgotten.
Many good examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dispite the reviews, I really like this book...
I'm currently taking college chemistry. Book consists of 3000 questions with various general chemistry topics. Ampule amount of questions for each topic and complexity. Answers/soutions provided right below questions. Useful(at least for me)because I don't have to flip through the back of the book for answers. In addition, since my textbook only have even numbered questions with just answers on the back of the book, I can use this book to reflect to similar problems.

If you need practice with chemistry problems, (esp. when you are a science major in college/university) I would recommend this book. (If your just in high school, your textbook and study guide would be fine.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as it could be
1.No review of subject - only solved problems
2.Not keyed in with Schaum's College Chemistry which does have some basic theory - so you will be doing them out of order with some texts.
3.No unsolved problems to work on to test yourself.

The thing I love about Schaum's outline series is they give you a brief discussion of theory, then a few problems solved in great detail and then several more just like it with the answer but no detail for you to figure out. This book doesn't do that - each problem is solved in moderate detail and some are fairly complex so you have to be pretty sure of what they are talking about before you tackle the problem. The problems increase in difficulty within each chapter so it has some tutorial aspect there.

I would use this for review after I've completed my text and the Schaum's College Chemistry or to hunt some problem that stumped me in my textbook to see how to do it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good additional study guide
This book is a good study guide to use in addition to the main textbook you may be using. It explains some concepts better than the textbook. It also has additional information you may not find in your textbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank God for this Book!
The reviewer who gave this book 3 stars was correct -- this is a book for those of us who have no chemistry background or who are "chemically challenged." I just spent about 6 hours on Friday night working problems from this book. Each time I got the answer correct, I was ASTOUNDED and compelled to work "just one more problem" to make sure that I really was getting the answers correct, and that it wasn't just a fluke or easy problem. This book has actually allowed me to entertain the idea that I might be able to do chemistry. After a life of avoiding math and science, I can't wait to take Chem 1 in the summer!!BUY THE BOOK

5-0 out of 5 stars Want an "A" in Chemistry?
I am in a college chemistry course. The assigned text book is useless and so is my teacher. I have taken two of three exams for the course and aced both of them thanks to this Homework Helpers: Chemistry book. I haven't taken chemistry before and it's been years since I have taken algebra... it doesn't matter because this book spanks my original text and makes it so I get 100% on exams.

4-0 out of 5 stars Help in chemistry!
I took chemistry about 20 years, and so far this book has helped me remember alot. This give clear examples in solving the study questions, and give great details on studying chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
The book was, in fact, like new condition and it arrived within a few days of placing my order. Overall a great experience!

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is crap
Ok, I will be clear that I am not reviewing this exact book, but the purely organic chemistry book that is a 1991 version that I got at the library. I have never actually taken organic chemistry. I was hoping to get a leg up, and this was the only book at the library on it, so I checked it out. And I am finding it terribly lacking in explanation. It is all problems and little explanation. It takes one paragraph and one example to explain something, which isnt enough to cover all aspects of the topic to where one can understand it, then it proceed to give you problems that you cant really work, but you follow through them and try to understand why they work, and most of the time there is a short explanation as to why the answer is the correct one. There are handy little charts here and there that make things a little easy, although it needs more. I have been able to grasp most of the information due to this book, but there are key topics that are recurring that I dont fully understand and it doesnt matter how much I read that one paragraph, I dont fully get it. Afterwards I went online to clear up the discrepencies, and I easily got it. From the review here, it sounds like this book is better than taking the class. I hope that is not the case. But I can tell you from the standpoint of someone that has never studied organic chemistry, but has taken general chemistry, this book is insufficient as a textbook.

alright two years later and after taking organic chemistry, i am rereviewing my review. apparently nobody liked it. but i stand by it. i found organic chemistry to be extremely easy and interesting. unlike most people, i really enjoyed it. this book would perhaps work as a nice review for someone that already knew what they were doing, but it is confusing. if you want to learn organic chemistry go to class or use a proper textbook. my textbook, written by my professor, was excellent. Get Iverson's text. ISBN: 0534467733.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love O. Chem... what's wrong with you?!
I have found the Schaum's Review series very helpful both in review and in independent study, especially for Organic Chemistry. Many times, chemistry students fail to learn key concepts not because they are incomprehensible (thankfully) but rather because they were either explained badly or simply explained in a way that does not make sense to a student. This book explains all the key concepts and includes almost 2000 problems to make sure you understand O. Chem. clearly even if you're so sick of it you're comtemplating shoving an Erlenmyer full of benzene down your professor's Organic throat.Buy it, and save your sanity. ... Read more

I WAS NOT AT ALL PLEASED WITH THE WAREHOUSE THAT SHIPPED THIS IT IS NOT THE CORRECT EDITION WHICH I NOTIFIED THEM OF AND REQUESTED A REFUND WHICH I CANNOT SEEM TO GET.I WAS INFORMED THAT IT WAS FAULT, BUT EVEN IF I ORDERED THE WRONG BOOK BY MISTAKE I STILL MUST BE SATISFIED AND ABLE TO RETURN IT.THANK YOU!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Chemistry
This was my first time studying Chemistry, and the book was excellent.

It's intended to students in the health field (ie nursing), and their applications are wonderful.

A little heavy on the exercises, but better too much than too little. It would do well to include more answers to the practice questions, but that's how they get you to buy the Study Guide. Oh well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to chemistry...
this is an excellent introductory chemistry textbook....

it is great for the last year of highschool.. or for bridging from highschool to unviersity..

it isn't that deep enough for most first year chemistry courses... but reading through this book before OR while you are in ur first year course will greatly help you understand the material... because this book doesn't assume u know a lot about the subject already...

cuz face it guys... nobody tries to remember stuff in highschool.. i personally just wanted to get it over with... therefore I forgot everything ...... but in university ur mentality changes.. u actually want to learn.. not just get 90 and get it over with.. that's why I bought this the summer before my classes started.. and went through it a little everyday...

well my First Year class used Raymond Chang's CHemistry book (more advanced than this one) ... but I found it much easier, because I reviewed during the summer... and when I hit a topic that was hard.. i would reference this book.. read it.. then go back to Chang's and read the material... this helped a lot because this book assumes no previous knowledge....

so it's good for ppl like me.. for the few out there who actually cared in highschool.. and remember nething... this book is a waste.. because it isn't deep enough for first year chem courses (it is deep enough for non science major chem courses.. but not the hardcore first year general chem course)

hope this helps ... Read more
