Product Description
Equilibrium inorganic chemistry underlies the composition and properties of the aquatic environment and provides a sound basis for understanding both natural geochemical processes and the behaviour of inorganic pollutants in the environment. Designed for readers having basic chemical and mathematical knowledge, this book includes material and examples suitable for undergraduate students in the early stages of chemistry, environmental science, geology, irrigation science and oceanography courses. Aquatic Environmental Chemistry covers the composition and underlying properties of both freshwater and marine systems and, within this framework, explains the effects of acidity, complexation, oxidation and reduction processes, and sedimentation. The format adopted for the book consists of two parallel columns. The inner column is the main body of the book and can be read on its own. The outer column is a source of useful secondary material where comments on the main text, explanations of unusual terms and guidance through mathematical steps are to be found. A wide range of examples to explain the behaviour of inorganic species in freshwater and marine systems are used throughout, making this clear and progressive text an invaluable introduction to equilibrium chemistry in solution. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for an overview of the topic.
This book is nice for a fast overview over aquatic environmetal chemistry. I couldn't find any obvious errors. (Minor pedagogical simplifications or omissions shouldn't be regarded as errors.) - Since it's written as an introduction book, I wouldn't protest if somebody gives it 5 stars.
(I wrote the text over years ago, and I soon forgot what the book had taught me. That is not a good sign, and I soon felt that I would only have given it three stars at a later date.) ... Read more

Product Description
An in-depth discussion of the thermodynamics and kinetics of natural waters

Divided into three major parts–structure of matter, chemical thermodynamics, and chemical kinetics– physical chemistry is concerned with the measurement, description, and prediction of the characteristics of chemical systems and their interaction with each other with respect to the transfer of mass and energy. Physical Chemistry of Natural Waters explores how the basic concepts of physical chemistry can be used to understand the chemistry of natural waters, with most of the text confined to chemical thermodynamics and kinetics.

The extensive material in this book is the result of a course in marine physical chemistry that the author has taught over the past decade. Dr. Millero incorporates his own personal interest in solution physical chemistry and his approach to understanding the physical chemistry of seawater with the text’s vast coverage of the physical chemistry of liquid phases. In addition, detailed reviews of the basics of thermodynamics and kinetics provide a comprehensive overview for a clearer understanding of the topics covered.

Environmental and physical chemists conducting research on water, seawater, rivers, lakes, and groundwater as well as graduate students studying environmental chemistry will find Physical Chemistry of Natural Waters a solid foundation on the subject of the physical chemistry of natural waters. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very well targeted
I suspect regarding some of the negative (1 star) reviews this book has received a bit of guerrilla marketing.

This is an excellent text on the subject and easy to read.It is far less confusing than most texts on the subject and makes a perfect text for upper undergraduate or graduate level geochem classes. It's a shame it is out of print at the moment. For presenting geochem in an understandable light, it is far Superior to some of the more popular texts.

It is unfortunate that acceptable texts in this subject for the advanced undergraduate or graduate have become so hard to find.If Drever comes back into print, I would recommend giving it a good look.

BTW, this is not a "do it yourself" book as some may surmise, it is a text that, while easy to understand, is best with a professor/staff/faculty member as a guide.

1-0 out of 5 stars Geochemistry of Natural Waters
I had used this text book for a graduate class in Chemical Hydrogeology while doing my Masters.I found this to be a very poor text to use.The textbook presents a very qaulitative approach to geochemistry of natural waters and does not lend itself to quanititative problem solving.I purchased other texts on ths subject so that I could cross-reference and determine how to setup problems for equilibrium chemistry.I would not recommend use of this text.

1-0 out of 5 stars Needs Work
This book does not lend itself to an introductory class in geochemistry for the graduate student. The material does not present comprehensive derivations of calculations, but relies on prior knowledge and assumption not generally available,or known by the graduate student first being introduced to Geochemistry. The majority of the book is normally only comprehensable to the student after the material has been described by persons knowledgable in the subject mater. In other word this book is worthless to read prior to the lecture on the subject mater.Furthermore, the appendices are full of errors and contradictions to other references, and the book has numerous typos and difficult language constructs that make the text incomprehensible at times.I hope there is a better book for the introductory graduate class in geochemistry out there, because this book does not cut it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable Reference for Aqueous Geochemistry Concepts
Drever's has long been a valuable reference in my own work and in the classes I teach. It is one of several references I use for understanding geochemical processes. The first sentence of the preface states that the text is intended for advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate courses. I first used this text when I took Aqueous Geochem in grad school and it really made a difference in understanding applications. Spend an hour with Stumm and Morgan and then look at Drever. You'll almost see the lightbulb go on over your head. The example calculations are great and the addition of the geochemical models enhance the applicability of the text.

However, I would note that if you need to start with introductory chemical concepts this isn't the book for you.

If you are weak in chemistry start elsewhere.

Still... two thumbs up from this reviewer.
