4-0 out of 5 stars Opinion
I benefited from this book immensely. If you are taking this class do yourself a big favor and buy it. If you are going to do something do it right and working the problems is the key. I got it for around 30$.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs a better editor
I bought this book along with the Bruice text for the organic class I'm taking right now. A solutions manual is indispensable for checking the answers to the problems you do - so I was going to buy the book anyway.Problem is, it looks like this solutions manual is the solutions manual for the 5th editon, only with a new cover so it looks like it's for the 6th edition. This would be fine, except that the problems in the 5th edition are not the same problems used in the 6th edition.I'd say that 90% of the time, the solutions manual is right - but is 90% good enough for people who are trying to learn the subject, and just end up getting more confused by a solutions manual with solutions for the wrong problem??I think the publisher should offer a correct copy free to anyone who shelled out $88 for this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another solutions manual.
I feel that this book is fine for a reference to the text book problems. The only complaint is that going through nearly the first half of the book, I have found a few minor typos.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book by Bruice!
I'm an advanced physics student, and decided to take organic chemistry since i was curious about reaction mechanisms.I must say, i was very satisfied with the book by Bruice. The mechanisms were very detailed, and the book seem to go into a little more detail than most books that i had looked at.I loved my organic chemistry class and although found it much easier than physics, it had it's challenging areas....and Bruice's book help me understand these challenging areas.in the end, i highly recommend this book if you want to understand organic chemistry at a much more detailed level. ... Book Description
Organic chemistry has long been recognized as an essential ingredient in the education of scientists in a wide range of fields, particularly in the life sciences. Indeed, as more and more disciplines come into contact with organic chemistry, new connections are constantly being forged. By extension, a career in medicine-an applied life science-is also becoming more and more dependent on organic chemistry, and not just because medical schools these days take special notice of the grade in organic! The practice of medicine nowadays increasingly requires a knowledge of the behavior of molecules. The molecular basis of pathogen action and of therapeutic agents are two obvious examples. These are developing areas at the moment, but there can be no doubt that the physician of tomorrow will have to be even more of a scientist-an organic chemist, among other things-than his or her predecessors. Accordingly, this book is written not just for the chemistry major, but is aimed instead at the person who wants a broad, yet modern introduction to the subject. General principles are stressed, because it is impossible to memorize all the details of this vast subject these days. One can, however, learn to make connections and to apply widely a set of organizing general principles, and that helps to render the prolific detail more manageable. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing organic chemistry text!
Dr. Jones's text is the best chemistry textbook I have used to date. This text is excellent for anyone taking sophomore/junior level undergraduate organic chemistry or for anyone who needs a comprehensive overview of the basics of organic chemistry. It is very readable and easy to follow; Dr. Jones's style of addressing the reader directly gives the text a personal feel to it.Highly recommended to any student of organic chemistry!! A superb textbook.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not the greatest
I have 2 main complaints about this book. First of all, the author will go on and on and on for pages giving a detailed explanation only to say in the end that it is not correct. He thinks this is helpful, however, it is extremely confusing and an enormous waste of time. Also, he lacks the ability to present material in a simple, logical and concise way. For example, when presenting substitution and elimination reaction mechanisms, he goes on for 75 pages (yes, the chapter is 75 pages long!!) yet never simply lists the basics for determining which mechanism will occur. All you want is a simple table, for example, 1) SN2 - favored by primary carbon, polar aprotic solvent, strong nucleophile, etc. 2)SN1........If you have to get this book, purchasing the solution manual is a must. One good thing, the author is entertaining - read footnotes, etc. - and he tells cute anecdotes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome
If you're normal, then you probably aren't too excited about taking Organic Chemistry. However, Jones Organic Chemistry is a much much better text than many of the orgo books out there. The book is set up the way that you should learn chemistry, the way that it makes sense, and not the way that many chemistry classes are being taught at many universities.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book!
This has to be one of the worst ever organic chemistry books ever devised. The author will give a detailed explanation with illustrations and at the very end of the discussion , once you have committed the information to memory, the book will say that it does not happen this way. The author seems to wax poetic, however,he gives no simple list of rules for common nomenclature problems, for example,I defy you to find a list of how to name alkanes under IUPAC rules. All you want is a simple list , for example,1) find the longest chain of carbons, 2) .........instead of this you will be exposed to extraneous quotes from plays and movies as well as anecdotes from the authors life. Another complaint is that the book gives several good questions in the text and at the end of the chapter, but NO answers in the back.If you want the answers, you have to purchase the 40.00 solution manual. My condolences to you if your o-chem teacher has been hoodwinked into using this book bythe publisher, the only advice I can give is that you purchase the solutions manual, because this gives some very detailed explanations.Good luck, because you will need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Orgo made easy! (well, maybe not easy, but possible)
This book is why I kept my sanity in the 2nd semester of orgo. chem. I took the class using this book the year before I transferred to a different university, and I've loaned it to some of my new friends struggling with orgo here. They've thanked me because unlike their texts, Jones' text actually explained concepts so that they made sense. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
This was a last minute purchase for school and the book was shipped quickly and arrived on time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely necessary for O Chem!
if you're taking o chem, then you need this book.the summaries are helpful for review of chapters or in the worst case scenario, in substitution of the chapters.but the most important part of this book are the solutions to the problems.the only way you'll learn organic chemistry, like it or not, is by practicing problems.this solutions manual is the only way to know if you're doing those problems correctly - the text book does NOT contain solutions for problems in the book, beside the worthlessly easy ones contained directly in the chapters.in addition to the solution, it contains an explanation for all problems that require one.

THIS BOOK IS WELL WORTH THE MONEY!you won't be disappointed.if anything, go in on it with a friend that is also taking the course.you WILL need this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real grade-saver
I bought this study guide for my daughter who is taking high school AP Chemistry using the associated text book. She was having difficulties understanding both the teacher and the text book, and had failed a test. When she received the study guide, she spent about a week going through the exercises and explanations for the first 7 chapters of the text book, and improved her understanding so much that she scored a "B" on the next test. Since then she has consistently scored "A"s on all subsequent tests by reviewing the concepts in the study guide and working the examples before doing her assigned homework, then working the quizzes in the study guide the night before her tests. The study guide is well-written, in many cases it defines concepts better than the text book, and presents the material with workable problems so that students learn the concepts in a more hands-on manner. It is worth every penny of the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide
This study guide is the perfect companion to Zumdahl's textbook. What I enjoy is that concepts from the text are presented in a slightly different way so if you didn't grasp it Zumdahl's way, you can grap it the author of this study guide's way. Also helpful are the practice problems and quizzes at the end of each chapter. This is what a textbook study guide should be.A must have if you are using Zumdahl's text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Chemistry
This was my first time studying Chemistry, and the book was excellent.

It's intended to students in the health field (ie nursing), and their applications are wonderful.

A little heavy on the exercises, but better too much than too little. It would do well to include more answers to the practice questions, but that's how they get you to buy the Study Guide. Oh well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to chemistry...
this is an excellent introductory chemistry textbook....

it is great for the last year of highschool.. or for bridging from highschool to unviersity..

it isn't that deep enough for most first year chemistry courses... but reading through this book before OR while you are in ur first year course will greatly help you understand the material... because this book doesn't assume u know a lot about the subject already...

cuz face it guys... nobody tries to remember stuff in highschool.. i personally just wanted to get it over with... therefore I forgot everything ...... but in university ur mentality changes.. u actually want to learn.. not just get 90 and get it over with.. that's why I bought this the summer before my classes started.. and went through it a little everyday...

well my First Year class used Raymond Chang's CHemistry book (more advanced than this one) ... but I found it much easier, because I reviewed during the summer... and when I hit a topic that was hard.. i would reference this book.. read it.. then go back to Chang's and read the material... this helped a lot because this book assumes no previous knowledge....

so it's good for ppl like me.. for the few out there who actually cared in highschool.. and remember nething... this book is a waste.. because it isn't deep enough for first year chem courses (it is deep enough for non science major chem courses.. but not the hardcore first year general chem course)

hope this helps

5-0 out of 5 stars Life saving personal tutor
I recently took chemistry part II after not having chemistry for several years. This book was a life saver.I was able to pull many examples from it to guide me when I did my homework.Chemistry is tough enough by itself, but this book really helped. All the answers are there so you can test yourself on one part, and then see the answers with explinations on another part.Everything was easy to understand in this book.I highly recommend this Study Guide. This Study Guide will save you a lot of time at the tutor, and keep you from pulling your hair out while figuring out chemistry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chemistry by Karen C. Timberlake
This is an excellent book. I tutor students who are going into the allied health professions, and some have never had chemistry before now. The chapters are clearly written with sample problems after each topic andend-of-chapter problems. I refer to it for exercises for my students. It isthe best that I have found so far. ... Read more

Book Description
The Ninth Edition of Organic Chemistry continues Solomons~Fryhle's tradition of excellence in teaching and preparing students for success in the organic classroom and beyond.

Students are often overwhelmed by the early rigors of organic chemistry. Solomons~Fryhle prepares students for these early rigors by introducing acids & bases--topics they know from general chemistry--early, followed by chapters on structure and stereochemistry. Next, a discussion of ionic reactions gives students a foundation for the vast majority of reactions that they will encounter. The Ninth Edition continues to introduce IR spectroscopy in chapter 2 (after functional groups) and Carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy in chapter 4, providing synergy with most lab courses and, again, reinforcing learning.

The new edition of Solomons~Fryhle also has a completely revised WileyPLUS course to help students and instructors reach their full potential. WileyPLUS provides instructors with the most robust online homework solution in organic chemistry. This revision of WileyPLUS meets students where and when they learn and provides them with a learning platform that offers real learning solutions that complement their approach to managing and mastering organic concepts. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Essential in a manipulative way...
This is the study guide companion to the text (which I am finding quite good). It is essential to work the book to develop the foundation of concepts necessary for this course. However, many chemistry texts offer solutions for at least even or odd numbered problems in the back of the textbook, then offer a reasonably priced study guide that works the problemsmore fully. The Solomons et al text gives absolutely no answers so you are forced to buy this study guide - which is extremely pricey - in order to really get any value out of the text. I actually need to learn this subject and even on Amazon the duo cost me $200. At this price, I would have liked more thoroughness on some of the worked solutions. Some you get, some you don't. ... Book Description
On the cover of this book is a Pacific yew tree, found in the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest. The bark of the Pacific yew tree produces Taxol, found to be a highly effective drug against ovarian and breast cancer. Taxol blocks mitosis during eukaryotic cell division. The supply of Taxol from the Pacific yew tree is vanishingly small, however. A single 100-year-old tree provides only about one dose of the drug (roughly 300 mg). For this reason, as well as the spectacular molecular architecture of Taxol, synthetic organic chemists fiercely undertook efforts to synthesize it. Five total syntheses of Taxol have thus far been reported. Now, a combination of isolation of a related metabolite from European yew needles, and synthesis of Taxol from that intermediate, supply the clinical demand. This case clearly demonstrates the importance of synthesis and the use of organic chemistry. It's just one of the many examples used in the text that will spark the interest of students and get them involved in the study of organic chemistry! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Necessity for Organic Chemistry Success!
If you are a student of organic chemistry using the textbook, Organic Chemistry, by the same author, I highly recommend purchasing this manual to accompany the text.Unlike many textbook solution guides, where they only include odd or even numbered problems, this manual includes all the answers to all the problems found in the textbook! In addition to chapter solutions, the author also includes solutions to questions in the special topics section found near the end of the text.

Aside from the solutions, there are other goodies. As the title suggests, this book is not just a solutions manual, but a study guide too. After each chapter of solutions, the authors include a short quiz to that can be used to see if the student has grasped the essential concepts for the chapter. Also, in the study guide, you will find a summary of all the important syntheses that comes in handy when doing homework.

I used this solutions guide as an undergraduate and can't imagine what type of grades I would have received if it weren't for this book!Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding textbook
I used this text in the 80's as an undergrad in Brazil, and am now a chemistry professor. Although my research is in computational chemistry, and organic chemistry seems a lot like fantasy to me, I still love Morrison and Boyd's textbook. I remember my experience with it, and my awe in finding that someone could actually put a textbook together that was enjoyable to be read, and easy to understand - and mind you, I was not fluent in English back then. I have just recently realized that all my organic texts have been "borrowed" by students, and that I should really get Morrison's. And this time make sure nobody will take it out of my office. If you want to learn organic chemistry with no struggle, this is the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard against which all other text books should be measured!
O.K.Let's face it:what could be more boring than Organic Chemistry - right?WRONG!Morrison and Boyd's Organic Chemistry takes the pallid and dry subject of Organic Chemistry and imbues it with a vitality and interest that will stupefy you.Trust me, you cannot begin to fathom how effective this book is at making its subject interesting and more importantly understandable. The authors are brilliant at introducing a complex and arcane topic, incrementally building slowly and confidently a framework of knowledge and information that nearly makes, of all things, intuitive sense when they are through.

Every educator should study Morrison and Boyd in an attempt to appreciate how it works its magic.I can say without reservation, this is the text book against which all others should be measured. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most pyramidal texts of Organic Chemistry ever published!
Due its ambitious purposes and powerful transcendence, the whole understanding of this fundamental branch of the Science seems to be in an authentic crescendo day after day.

This book illustrates and clarifies such just a few, the most relevant aspects of this dynamic and expansive scientific discipline.

Recommended for students and teachers of Chemistry, Chemistry Engineers and Bio analysts.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Standard Chemistry Textbook!
I used this book as a supplement for Ege's organic book.It helped me do well in my class and prepared me for the chemistry GRE.This book is older but well worth the cost.I think it should be on any chemists' shelf of literature. The reactions it tells you are easy to understand and the mechanisms make sense. The only problem I would have is the spec. section for infared is a little weak. But it does everything else well so it makes up for it.Buy this Book for undergraduate study you won't be disappointed!

4-0 out of 5 stars easy to understand
it is a great textbook for those who need organic chem.i am a chemical engineering undergraduate and the way the book is set up in problems and exercises is also great. after every section a question , that may seem difficult at first, is really a restatement of that section. but don't get it twisted into thinking that it is a pick up and go book.the solutions manual is a must if you want to fully grasp an understanding for this difficult subject.i also got a copy of the wade series to complement the book when i wasn't sure of the full chemical reactions that took place but overall, it's a great book to use. ...
