1-0 out of 5 stars CHEATED OUT OF MONEY AND THEY TRIED TO BRIBE ME
I was lied to about my purchase.I complained, they lied to me about being misleading when selling me the product.I received the wrong item and I payed about $40 more than what it is really worth.THEN THEY TRIED TO BRIBE ME TO NOT SAY ANYTHING NEGATIVE.Terrible ethics.DO NOT BUY FROM HERE. And the item was severely damaged when I received it.What a waste of money!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
Great book because it shows mechanisms. Also has extra questions throughout and at the end of each chapter.Good tool if you like to study on your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Student perspective - Anslyn/Iverson - UT
Though the book itself does have some errors, that's why there are new editions!

first of all, i took the class with Anslyn and Iverson at the University Of Texas, two of the authors of the book and they are one of the most brilliant professors I've met.The book is written so that students can understand clearly and that the main points of organic chemistry is stressed. These two professors are not only proficient in the subject, but they are also really excellent lecturers.Being a good professor doesn't mean they can express what they say to words. But this book really proves it.It's easy to read and you won't feel stupid when reading it like numerous science textbooks. The format and work out problems are proficient and go full circle with things that are encounter in life like drugs, cloths, food, etc..all the things this world is made out of is correlated with organic chem.

Pros:
-easy to read
-good examples
-correlates to life

Cons:
-price
-some errors

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good choice for self-studiers - Pick a text that includes an answer key instead!
I am currently using this text in my organic chemistry lecture.I find the chapters in the text to be relatively straightforward and concise, but I'm really irritated that the book does not contain any sort of answer key for the end-of-chapter problems.

To be fair, there are solutions for the handful of problems that are in the middle of the chapter, but these problems are few in number and are very simple, so they are insufficient for drilling/practicing the concepts. The problems at the end of the chapter are much harder and more numerous, but it is pointless to try these problems without the solutions manual because there is no answer key for them in the book.

Every other science text I've had has had an answer key for the odd-numbered problems at the end of the chapter. The solutions manual was only necessary if you wanted answers to the even-numbered problems, or if you needed detailed explanations of how to arrive at the correct answers. For this text, you have to drop an additional $100+ to get any form of answer key. This is a blatant rip-off by the publisher, at a time when textbooks and college tuition fees are already high enough.

If you're a self-studier, I would recommend choosing a different textbook that does include an answer key, even if it's only for the odd-numbered problems. If you are a professor, I would recommend choosing such a text as well.If you are enrolled in a course that uses this textbook, I guess you're stuck in the same position I am in, having to shell out the extra $100 for something that should have been included in the book in the first place.

Product Description
On the cover of this book is a Pacific yew tree, found in the ancient forests of the Pacific Northwest. The bark of the Pacific yew tree produces Taxol, found to be a highly effective drug against ovarian and breast cancer. Taxol blocks mitosis during eukaryotic cell division. The supply of Taxol from the Pacific yew tree is vanishingly small, however. A single 100-year-old tree provides only about one dose of the drug (roughly 300 mg). For this reason, as well as the spectacular molecular architecture of Taxol, synthetic organic chemists fiercely undertook efforts to synthesize it. Five total syntheses of Taxol have thus far been reported. Now, a combination of isolation of a related metabolite from European yew needles, and synthesis of Taxol from that intermediate, supply the clinical demand. This case clearly demonstrates the importance of synthesis and the use of organic chemistry. It's just one of the many examples used in the text that will spark the interest of students and get them involved in the study of organic chemistry! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Necessity for Organic Chemistry Success!
If you are a student of organic chemistry using the textbook, Organic Chemistry, by the same author, I highly recommend purchasing this manual to accompany the text.Unlike many textbook solution guides, where they only include odd or even numbered problems, this manual includes all the answers to all the problems found in the textbook! In addition to chapter solutions, the author also includes solutions to questions in the special topics section found near the end of the text.

Aside from the solutions, there are other goodies. As the title suggests, this book is not just a solutions manual, but a study guide too. After each chapter of solutions, the authors include a short quiz to that can be used to see if the student has grasped the essential concepts for the chapter. Also, in the study guide, you will find a summary of all the important syntheses that comes in handy when doing homework.

I used this solutions guide as an undergraduate and can't imagine what type of grades I would have received if it weren't for this book!Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
I used this book in my udergrad. It is a fairly easy to read book. The graphics and diagrams are good, but it wouldn't hurt to improve them a bit. It is filled with lots of examples and practice problems. The bibliographical references are excellent for those who are interested infinding out in more detail about a certain topic. ... Read more

Product Description
Chemistry: The Study of Matter and Its Changes, Sixth Edition will provide the necessary practice, support and individualised instruction that ensures success in the General Chemistry course. This text provides the forum for problem solving and concept mastery of chemical phenomena that leads to proficiency and success in the General Chemistry course. This edition will continue a "molecular basis of chemistry" tradition, but in a manner that overtly and repeatedly reinforces the way properties at the molecular level are related to properties we observe at the macroscopic level. The unique "chemical tools" approach employed in this book provides a way of thinking that helps those students develop the ability to analyse and solve both mathematical and conceptual problems. This text follows the successful three-step approach described as "ANALYSIS," "SOLUTION" and "IS THE ANSWER REASONABLE?" This encourages the student to think about the problem before attempting to solve it, then working through the solution, and finally asking the important question "Does the answer make sense?" There are problem sets called "Bringing It Together" that contain problems which require students to bring together concepts from two or more of the preceding chapters. This reinforces learned concepts and builds concept mastery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor, get this book
Even though we had weekly help sessions for our Orgo homework, this solutions guide helped me significantly. If I was in the session, I could follow along with the solution guide (as our TA's were less than stellar). If I missed the session, I could use the guide to help me through the problems.I am Orgo-incompetent and managed a decent grade by relying on this book. All the problems in the text are explained in here, making it a useful study tool come exam time.Save yourself hours of trouble, get this solutions guide.

Pros:
-All problems from text worked in guide
-Explains solution in great detail, referencing to book for additional info

Cons:
-Orgo sucks

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Seller
The book arrived very quickly and it was brand new.GREAT savings over the college bookstore price.Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the better books i've gone through
I'd rather use this book to review for the MCAT and PCAT rather than Kaplan and Princeton, etc. This is very simple, although full of tangents and history, which I don't like. And colors!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst Organic Chemistry Book
I am a student at Rice University. I'm establishing that I have actually cracked open this book unlike some of the glowing positive reviews of this textbook probably seeded by the publishers of this book. To those who think this book is great: you're doing society a disservice by attempting to teach organic chemistry without synthesis. The students who have read this book will emerge ignorant of the importance of synthesis.

I have read four undergraduate organic chemistry textbooks: Vollhardt; Wade; Browne, Foote, Iverson; and Jones. Jones is the worst by far. There is no justification for his approach. Organic chemistry is about reactions and synthesis. This book doesn't get into reactions until page 134. Chirality is mentioned extremely late in the book while thermodynamics is mainly set aside as a nuisance rather than an explanation. Sterics and electronic factors have paltry coverage. Moreover, important to synthetic organic chemists is the determination of products. NMR is central to these ends. NMR isn't covered until Chapter 15.

If I were to ask Maitland Jones one question, I would ask why he wrote this book. This book cannot be used as a reference with its inexact tables, useless anecdotes, and digressions that go nowhere. You don't learn organic chemistry. You learn about structures and molecular orbitals. Honestly, if one introduces the formation of a Grignard reagent in Chapter 6 and ignores its usefulness in synthesis until page 859 about 10 chapters later, there is something terribly wrong.

The explanations are awful. Whie Jones simply omits the reasons why additions to aromatic systems occur at the para, meta, and ortho positions, Vollhardt and Wade give a succinct and simple process for determining placement of directors, replete with information. Finally, there are very few problems, not to mention the relegation of synthesis to about 2 pages in the back of every chapter. Use Vollhardt or Wade. They are far superior.

1-0 out of 5 stars Modern Chemistry: Study Guide
Modern Chemistry: Study Guide was missing the first 52 pages!!!!! I had to buy a new one because when I realized it, I had already thrown away all the return papers. The book looked new, so I didn't think someone would scam me like that!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Two books with different names are almost identify
I ordered two books for my high schooler's Chemistry class, "section reviews" and "study guide" by the same authors, to go with her text book "Modern Chemistry".I was very disapoointed to find out that these two books are identical in the first 80 pages, the same title, the same contents, the same page number etc, but the cover is completely different. After 80 pages, it has some differences on the multiple choices, still look very similar for those I checked.Sadly, from the description, there is no indication whatsoever to show one is an update of another, or one is different than another.Amazon.com's website actually listed the combined price for these two books with Modern Chemistry, so anyone would think (I did) that these two books are completely different! There might be some differences indicated somewhere I did not find, and I would very much like to find out about it.Why can not these two books just have the same cover, or somewhere list they are related or one is evolved from another?I spent lots of time looking for the books, and I am in the biology and chemistry field!I was very sad this is happening and hope to find a good reason about it.I did find out one was printed in 2009 and another in 1999 (from the website, and the books did not show any date on the copyright page).Perhaps I should have been more careful not to buy anything that was printed 10 years ago?Unfortunately, I can not comment on the content yet, since I am still very upset. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Loudon is one of the best
I am quite fortunate to have read just about every organic chemistry book written to date. Of course, some are excellent, some are not quite up as good. Loudon's text is one of the best. His book is excellent on many topics that other authors sometimes seem tohedge around or not cover as well. One in particular,is one of the stereochemistry or explanation of symmetry and chirality. Throughout the text, he continues to hit home the idea that carbon and its 3-d accounts should be remembered, whether in structures or in reactions. His explanations are quite clear, and I enjoyed the text very much. I would suggest you get the solution manual also. In organic chemistry, what will make you a good studentis practice. However, using 3 D models will clarify many details for you-- while you write on paper and do the reactions.Make a 3 D model of the cycloalkanesand notice some of the slight differences of the carbon positioning to make the more stable forms. There is no way one could not enjoy reading and learning from the textbook. It is written for the soph- jr. collegelevel organic chemistry courses, but is excellent. It you get a firm understand from this text, which you can, then in graduate level organic and P-chem classes they will really roll for you. I highly recommend it. As hiseditions continued, the book only gets better.guy airey ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Chem., Edition Two Review
This guide is helpful in the sense that it provides extra exercises outside of the textbook for you to really learn the concepts. Not everybody has time for all of the resources available to them, but this is quite direct withexercises of each sub-section covered in the guide, practice tests and answers to all of the exercises located at the end of the related chapter. Chemistry takes some time and assimilation (for me), and this is a quality supplement to the textbook.
