Product Description

For two-semester or three-quarter courses in General Chemistry.

The author’s goal in writing this book is to deliver the depth of coverage faculty want with the accessibility and clarity that students need for success.  Nivaldo J. Tro’s Chemistry: A Molecular Approach explains difficult chemical concepts in a concise and clear student-centered manner while also providing faculty with the flexibility to go more deeply into many key, often neglected topics, such as electron diffraction, molecular orbital theory, and free-energy changes under non-standard conditions.  Chemistry is presented visually throughmulti-level images (macroscopic, molecular and symbolic representations), which helps students see the connections among the formulas (symbolic), the world around them (macroscopic), and the atoms and molecules that make up the world (molecular).  Every aspect of this book focuses students on recognizing that the behavior of matter is based on the behavior of atoms and molecules.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Fast Super Fast!
Ordered Tuesday afternoon, received following Monday ,and I didn't even purchase expedited delivery.Book was in EXCELLENT condition even though it was used and delivery was SUPER FAST! STRONGLY RECOMMEND SELLER!

5-0 out of 5 stars It took a while, but it came.
Needed this for college and it was a better price at Amazon then in the bookstore on campus--all worked out great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chem student
Great text and an easy read, but not for advanced chem students. I bought it for a bio-chem class at University of Kentucky, and was super-pleased with my purchase. My only reason for 4-stars is the examples provided for in-text reference will never be used on a chem test, simply because they're too easy. Yes, easy probs should be included in order to build foundational skills, but, this book stops there. The text is great though, and superbly easy to pick up on. Also, like most textbooks, only odd answers to chapter reviews are included in the back of the book. C'mon people,it's frigin ridiculous to attempt to solve problems you have no answer for reference. All textbooks need all answers. And don't give me that bull-crap that you can cheat out of the back. Hardly have I ever received homework assignments from chapter summaries. In my experience, it's lecture, study your book, then take a test. All answers would for surely help in that regard.

5-0 out of 5 stars Like it!
I received exactly what I ordered. It was in good condition and came in great time! I was very pleased with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Chemistry Textbook!!
This textbook is FANTASTIC! My favorite feature in this textbook are the examples. Each example is written step by step with instructions on one side, with the problem worked out next to it. After each example is a practice problem which enables the student to reinforce the new techniques using a similar problem. I had a very enthusiastic professor for Chemistry, who had difficulty communicating the subject as English was not her primary language....this being said, this textbook made it easy for me to get an "A" in the course, and also served as a good foundation for my future Chemistry courses. Honestly, a student could easily learn Chemistry from this textbook with little or no assistance from their instructor!! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars TERRIBLE SERVICE!!!!
I ordered from this vendor weeks before school started for me and needed the book asap. The vendor never replied to my messages asking what the hold up was and yet they still say their book was in stock. Good thing I purchased from the school before class started. Terrible service, doesn't return messages. Not recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for some, not for others
I purchased this textbook for my Introduction to Chemistry class.Since my friends who had taken the class last semester had used the software that came with the text, I purchased the new book with unopened software as opposed to a used one with no software. It was only after I started the class that I found out that the instructor only used the textbook as a reference material for us to use in case we didn't understand something, and that he had never even heard of the software!Since the book with the software was an extra $100, I decided to return this one and get a used textbook without the software for only $100.Even now, I still don't use the book all that much because it is very complicated and detailed. It can take a lot of brainpower to interpret what the book is trying to tell you, when you could just as easily go to the professor and ask him what it means (and often get a much simpler answer in return). Therefore, this book is great for those who love detail and who need the software for their course, but otherwise, I would just stick to getting a used copy for less money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Service
I ordered this used text book for my daughter. It saved her a substantial amount of money and was in perfect shape, like new. The best part is that it arrived much sooner than expected.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book -- want mine?
I was literally teaching myself chemistry from this book because the professor went faster than I could process. It's a GREAT book for slow-processors like myself, very well-explained, lots of examples and practice problems. I had a A average in the class -- lots of effort, but got it all from the book. I bought it brand new, it's only 7 weeks into the semester;I'm an adult:I don't write, highlight or doodle in my books. It's in pristine condition, not so much as a creased page.I've decided to go into a different field that doesn't require this course. If you want it at half-price + shipping, contact me.

2-0 out of 5 stars Shipping
Haven't received my item yet, two day shipping turned into five. Not happy, especially since i need to do work in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I used this book for my Introductory Chemistry Class (130) at Scottsdale Community College.I saved a lot of money buying the second edition instead of the third edition and even bought the solutions manual for the second edition on amazon too all for about 15 dollars including shipping. It was probably better than buying the new edition without the study guide. Overall the book is organized very well and written in a way which is easily understood. It gives a great intro to gen chem subjects, and made me really look forward to studying each subject more in depth. It has a lot of example problems within the text and many problems to practice with in the back of each chapter. I ended up getting an A in the Class.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally!!!A book that shows math set ups in an easy to understand format!
Chemistry contains A LOT of math, at least my professor requires it.

I am taking a college Chemistry course to satisfy my degree requirement in the nursing field.I am an adult student whom has always struggled with math.I have searched high and low for a book to show the right set ups for the math problems that must be dealt with in order to succeed in this subject. I finally found it, Basic Concepts of Chemistry.

At the beginning of the book, it shows how to set up conversions. It does a beautiful job of showing mole to mole conversion in later chapters. It also shows you the geometry that you need when you encounter the valance shell electron pair repulsion theory (VESPR) in an easy to understand format.

This book may contain typos and errors but it delivers the good by explaining what you need to know.If you can overlook them, you've got yourself a winner.

Yes, this book is not college level, but it is a fast read, and explains concepts clearly. The book seems to help "prepare" you, or get you ready for the math that you will face in Chemistry without it seeming overwhelming to the student.I only wish I had this book at the beginning of the semester, instead of towards the last, when I really needed it.

For comparisons, I do like it better than The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry, 2nd Edition (Complete Idiot's Guide to) and Chemistry for Dummies. The book that my class requires is Introduction to General, Organic and Biochemistry (with CD-ROM and ThomsonNOWPrinted Access Card). It does an okay job but out of all of them, Basic Concepts of Chemistry is the best.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst text I have ever used
This book does an extremely poor job of explaining basic concepts. The explanations lack even more clarity because of the absurd amount of typos that occur throughout (the study guide contains several typos per chapter...and we're not talking grammar, we're talking wrong answers/formulas). I actually bought a second textbook for my chemistry course and found it more helpful than this one (and the course was taught from this text). Someone needs to A.) PROOFREAD THE TEXT AND STUDY GUIDE, and B.) DEVELOP REAL, LUCID EXPLANATIONS, not relate molar mass to apples and oranges. For anyone who is interested the second book I purchased was the one published by McGraw-Hill(and no I do not work for them).

3-0 out of 5 stars Barely the Basics 7th edition
CONS:
If your planning on taking college level chemistry, don't waste your time with this text. It's overly simplistic and is not able to explain many of the regular concepts that are required for completing a college chem. course. Although the simplicity appears appealing to the beginner level, the text will leave you hanging with numerous unanswered questions.
PROS:
The book is a "ok" "review" unless your in high school and still you'll need more then it offers. The math examples and color are probably it's best features. ...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Companion
This book is the perfect companion for those studying Chemistry at a beginner level (high school, and to a lesser extent first-year College study.) Its detailed explaination of ideas and concepts coupled with thelively and colorful diagrams all provides excellent back-up notes for one'scourse of study. Take it to class and have it ready to go when you study.Malone writes in a friendly and non-formal style, but still gives very goodand up-to-date deatils of current chemistry techniques. The tag questionson each page will make you think about each chapter's contents and willreinforce the content of the book. Like chemistry, the ideas in this bookare universal and will benefit your study no matter where in the world youare. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too happy

4-0 out of 5 stars An Introduction to Chemistry as the Title Describes
I took this book out of my local library as I wanted to learn about organic chemistry in a general sense, before I get down and dirty with it during class.

This book starts off with the more simple aspects of chemistry that schools teach in general chemistry. I skipped these portions since I had already learned most of them , and so can't comment on them specifically.

Instead I went to the organic chemistry sections, which seem to make up the bulk the book's center. These sections are helpful at grasping the ideas behind organic chemistry, but they never go into a lot of detail about any particular portion. For example, there is a chapter on Carboxylic acids which explains what categorizes that functional group, as well as a couple physical properties surrounding it; Such as how it'll make a salt with bases, boiling point trends. To me it felt like reading a Wikipedia entry, but one that is portable and tries to leave heavy mathematics out, and is oriented towards a more general audience. This is good, but there was a craving for more, as though things that may be important are being kept from me.

Pictures/diagrams were generally well illustrated, I would have liked in a couple places for the authors to have placed the diagrams they were referring to on the same page for fast reference, rather than move it to the next one, but I can understand how this isn't always possible. Like the pictures there was the tendency to refer to something once, then use it a lot after that, so be prepared to backtrack. Luckily there was a helpful sheet at the back that had common functional groups discussed in the organic portion of the book.

There are practice problems at the end of each chapter. As a general reader, you probably wouldn't have to go over them, as they were probably intended for classroom homework. They appeared to be based off of the practice exercises that are scattered through each chapter after they went over it. These practice exercises were well done, as the authors would go over a problem that you would see in the end of chapter questions and then work out the solution for you. Helpful to solidify the topics.

Special selected topics are also contained within the pages. These sections felt as though the author wanted less explaining and more lecturing. Not that this is bad, as the pace was certainly faster, but in that same way, it introduced a lot of vocabulary, and new substances, which are unlikely to be heavily applied outside that selected topic. These Selected Topics were interesting in that they were written about life processes so felt like they mattered. One was written about drugs that people use, and short facts about them. Another one highlighted neurons and chemical signals, which quickly became convoluted.

Overall, reading it was fun, and educational without too much investment of brainpower. Brings up interesting thoughts about the world around us.

2-0 out of 5 stars Needs better diagrams and illustrations
The illustration on electron energy levels needs to be more clear. There needs to be improvement on how the periodic table's properties are explained. The text needs better, simpler and more clear graphs and illustrations. There are much better Chemistry texts out there than this one.
