Product Description
Anyone who works with abused children has experienced the frustration of searching for appropriate materials to use in therapeutic settings. This activity-oriented resource - written to help young victims heal and gain control of their lives - provides hard-to-find supplements as well as background information and guidelines for use. The authors offer a brief review of child sexual development and then present a four-stage approach to recovery for children aged from six to 12 years. Designed for use in conjunction with traditional therapeutic interventions, the volume guides therapists through establishing a therapeutic rapport to helping children explore the trauma, repair their sense of self and become future oriented. Special activities empower children to safely deal with trauma-related issues at each phase of healing. Case examples demonstrate how the activities can be applied, although therapists can determine which activities to use at any given stage of treatment. A separate activity manual is provided with this book. ... Read more

Product Description
The Right Touch reaches beyond the usual scope of a children's picture book. It is a parenting book that introduces a very difficult topic--the sexual abuse of young children. This gentle, thoughtful story can be read aloud to a child by any trusted caregiver.

In the story, young Jimmy's mom explains the difference between touches that are positive and touches that are secret, deceptive or forced. She tells him how to resist inappropriate touching, affirming that abuse is not the child s fault.

The introduction provides valuable information about sexual abuse and guidance on what to do if your child experiences an abusive situation. Jody Bergsma's gentle illustrations soften the impact of this story; yet this portrayal of a dangerous situation is very realistic. If your child is old enough to sit still and listen to a story, he or she is old enough for The Right Touch.

Used by parents and teachers nationwide to help children avoid sexual abuse, this book won the 1999 Benjamin Franklin Parenting Award. It was a finalist for the Small Press Award and was also "Selected as Outstanding" by the Parent Council, Ltd. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book to use to talk about difficult subject
After my divorce I realized that I would no longer be able to be there and protect my daughters when they had weekends with their dad. This book enabled me to calmly and safely introduce concepts that were so emotionally charged for me that I had been unable to speak about them in a neutral tone with my girls. This book was a God-send.Not only did it get us talking about a sensitive subject (appropriate vs. inappropriate touch), it also gave my girls the words they can use if they ever feel uncomfortable with another person - child or adult.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gentle age-appropriate introduction to a serious topic
A child psychologist friend recommended this book to me as a way to "vaccinate" my 5 year old against sexual predators. The book is very well written and presets what can be a difficult topic to discuss with a little one in an age-appropriate format, easy for a child to comprehend. Highly recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Hmmm- graphic
My 3 1/2 year old son has asked me to read this book several times since I bought it. It makes me uncomfortable to read- as a survivor of sexual abuse myself I wanted to ensure my children could have tools for dealing with the situation to the best of their ability. Im not sure I want my son to know that people can put their hands down other people's panties if he doesnt know that yet. I wanted a book that reinforces their self confidence that some things are not okay and they can say so...not encourage their imaginations to go wild as a result. I much prefer Some Parts are not for Sharing...it states specifics without associating the whys to something negative.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Right Touch
This is one of the finest books to use to aid in the prevention of sexual abuse for children. It teaches your child what is a right touch and what is not. Then it teaches the child what to do if, by chance, someone has touched them in an inappropriate way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super book - so well done!
This book is perfect for introducing this difficult topic to your children. It is detailed enough to create a good conversation, and yetpresented comfortably enough that a Dad can read it his little girl or boy (we both read it to our daughter, so she can feel comfortable with sharing any concerns with EITHER of us).I have seen other books on the topic, and this one is by far the best.I wish someone would have read it to me as a little girl . . . ... Product Description
Clinicians have tended to specialize in one form of child maltreatment, rather than examine the interrelationship between the various types of abuse and neglect. In response to this fragmentation, this volume considers the unique and overlapping long-term effects of all major forms of child abuse and neglect.

The author integrates information on seven types of child abuse and neglect - ranging from sexual and physical abuse to mistreatment by alcoholic or drug-addicted parents - and outlines the complex ways in which abuse impacts on later psychosocial functioning. Briere reframes traditional notions of psychopathology and describes treatment approaches to abuse-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, interpersonal dysfunction, self-destructive behaviour, impaired self-reference and borderline personality disorder.

Child Abuse Trauma will be an invaluable resource for abuse specialists and for general therapists who want to understand the connection between many forms of psychological distress and the lasting impacts of child maltreatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to a difficult subject
I picked this book up as an adoptive parent trying to get up to speed on the consequences of and treatment for the physical abuse my son experienced the first five years of life. What a great introduction this book is to the subject.Although certainly written for practitioners, it is eminently readable to someone without formal training in the subject, and it allowed me to better focus in on aspects of his behavior to bring to the attention of a therapist that I certainly would have otherwise missed.A terrific resource, even 15 years after publication.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive resource for therapists
John Briere is a leader in the field of child abuse treatment and is therefore exceptionally knowledgeable on this topic. That exceptional knowledge shines through in this book.Clearly written and well organized, I highly recomend it to any therapist or human services worker who wants to increase her skills in assisting abuse survivors. -Sharice Lee-Author "The Survivor's Guide." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
As a child from an extremely abusive home, I found this book to be incredibly helpful. It is a book written by an abused adult child for abused adult children. I'm a hard sell, but this book actually did help if for no other reason than it gave me a new perspective on a lot of things.

Be warned though, if you are sincerely after working on your problems and you use this book, you will find yourself emotionally worn out more often than not. But stick with it and you will see progress.

3-0 out of 5 stars A few good ideas, needs more ideas to help people who were abused..
I get the idea that most of the people writing reviews of these books are Psychologists and aren't people who were actually abused.. I thought there were a few good ideas. It was good at showing what characteristics people who were abused have, but most people who were abused already know they have all these characteristics. They are trying to figure out what "normal" is and how to get from point A to point B, and to be honest if they are buying this book, they're buying this book to get help and not to come up with all the theories and all. That said, it's still better than most of the other books I've read, and it still has good ideas that are worth getting the book for. There's a section on listening to what's around you..I had been going to the swimming pool several times a week for the past few years, and I never really heard the sounds of the water splashing, or the kids playing, or the lifeguard, or the parents sitting there, I just tuned it all out, like everything and everyone else.

but it's still not a lot of help to a person who has been abused. It's really more for therapists to be honest, and that does me little good, to be honest.but I'm still glad I got the book,a nd I don't regret getting it.Some of them are a waste.

2-0 out of 5 stars Starts out great, then doesn't measure up.
I found that this book, although promising a fresh look at the age old problems of adult children of abuse, falls short in the long run. Adults who experienced abuse as children are usually well aware of that abuse. This book deals with uncovering the abuse, and then takes, in my opinion, controversial steps at therapy. Those steps include a "reconstruction of the past" in essence fabricating lies and letting those lies replace the truths of the abuse. I, for one, was looking for a way to defeat the anger I feel, not reconstruct my past into some idyllic existence. For me, living a lie where I remember parents who never existed would only be compounding the problem.
So, I cannot recommend this book as part of an affective regimen of therapy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Adult Children of Abusive Parents
This book made me feel the pain of those who have suffered at the hands of abusive parents. It proved to be useful for my course project.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing Abuse
If you have been abused: sexually, mentally or verbally by a parent or guardian, and you are the walking "wounded", you need to read this book. It helps you to get past all that trauma, forgive that person and go on with your life. Forgiveness doesn't mean you'll ever forget, it means you let go. There's so much you can do on your own and this is a great start!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good but not for students
I gave this book 4 stars because it was a very good, easy read. The author did a great job, and Keith Richards does a good job of being honest about portraying the image of how the social workers real life is in this field. It doesn't give a lot of detail on the cases themselves and I wouldn't recommend it to students because it doesn't make the field sound too great. I'd recommend it to people just to enjoy but as far as case studies ..Nah. I think anyone could read this book. I wished it had more detail about the cases themselves though.
Still a pretty good read

Abused by her stepmother between the ages of five and eleven, Donna Ford was labeled 'the bastard', the 'little witch,' and 'the evil one.' She was beaten, isolated, and afraid to even look at her own reflection by physical and mental abuse that eventually progressed to the most appalling sexual attacks. Despite an horrendous early life, Donna is now a successful artist and mother of three with an enormous enthusiasm and an optimism which completely belies her experiences. In 2003, Donna watched as her stepmother was found guilty of 'procuring a minor' for sexual abuse and sentenced to two years in prison.

5-0 out of 5 stars Developmental/Attachment Perspective of Abuse and Neglect--Very Helpful
Howe's book isa great reference work that looks at various kinds of abuse and neglect from a developmental/attachment perspective. A developmental perspective views children's minds as developing in close relationships. A child exhibits various degrees of attachment to a caregiver and that caregiver's sensitivity is affected by their own processing of their past relational trauma and neglect. This book is not a simple overview and might be heavy to read from front to back. There is much to be gained, however, by simply selecting chapters of interest because the text is very well written and the research is up to date. The ideas for interventions and treatment provide a good overview of some of the more recent approaches to improving parental responsiveness in a neglectful/abusive environment while at the same time being sensitive to a child's emotional needs.
The book has a simpleintroduction on emotions and development (chapter 2), and an excellent chapter on "Patterns of Attachment" (chapter 3).What is phenomenal about the book is that it provides a very clear picture of the "caregiving environment" under various situations, what the parents are doing in terms of handling their own anxieties and attachment issues, and what the children are doing to adapt and cope. The book paints a descriptive picture of how the cycle of insecure attachment repeats itself through parental patterns, down through the children, and then of course, as the children become adults and parents themselves.
What Howe also addresses very clearly is the impact of neglect. The book, of course, discusses the impact of overt abuse but also helps the reader understand the severe impact of various kinds of neglect on children. At a minimum, neglect affects a child's capacity to handle affect and respond in a healthy manner to intimacy. Chapter 6 "Psychological Maltreatment: Emotional Abuse, Neglect and Rejection" is a must read (along with Chapter 3). The discussion not only describes family dynamics and child adaptations but case vignettes. The impact on a sense of self is a theme throughout the book.Impacts of drug abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence and physical abuse are all covered in various chapters.
The last section of the book includes an overview of interventions based on a child's age and the nature of the home environment. The rationale to the interventions is spelled out clearly with enough detail to be helpful but exhaustive descriptions of each possible intervention is beyond the scope of the book. I haven't completed reading every chapter yet but find it organized enough to easily skim sections for useful information. Highly recommended reading and a valuable resource. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
I bought this book to read in the hopes of better understanding and helping a friend. It is a very enlightening book and really helps you to understand what they are going through and how you might help them.It is definitely a hard read .. but based on the name you already knew that.

I recommend this to people who know someone going through the aftereffects of abuse.

This book is an excellent resource for those who are working in the field of Child Sexual Abuse protection. It helps to understand the coping machanism of abuse from childhood through adulthood.

The book was delivered promptly and in excellent conditions.Thank you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great help
Although there were one or two chapters in the book that didn't pertain to me, I found this book very helpful. The exercises at the end of each chapter really made me think, and made me realize why I react the way I do to certain things. It helped that I was able to share the questions and my answers with a couple of trustworthy friends. This book gave me the incentive to want to move on to the next step in my recovery process.
I, too, have tried to contact a couple of the helplines mentioned in the back of the book, but was unable to.However, that is not a problem for me, as I can contact a local agency.

2-0 out of 5 stars Practically Pointless
First let me say this: I commend anyone who puts out a book on this subject matter, it is brave, thoughtful, and honorable. It is a much needed genre and shouldn't be too strongly criticized.
That aside, one of the few things this book suceeded in doing was convincing me that sexual abuse has a detrimental effect on the person in their adult life, something I had no need to be convinced of.It also no doubt made the average survivor feel less alone. In addition, there was one wonderful chapter about how to protect one's own children from abuse.
It lacks practical use. Most of the survivors' resources (hotlines) in the back were disconnected or when actually put to use were run by characteristically undereducated people. There are no suggestions for prosecution that I recall, and virtually nada hardcore advice for dealing with the residual effects of this abuse.
Overall not worth buying unless you are just now becoming aware of your own abuse and need to overcome the feelings of shame and isolation, or you're coming to grips with the abuse of a loved one and you need to be educated on the emotional experience of said loved one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good book
best book for adults who were sexually assaulted as a child and want to move forward quickly to understand and heal

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely a gem
This is a perfectly wonderful little book, not just for victims of childhood sexual abuse and those who love them but also for service providers. It is simply and clearly written, but the ideas and insights set forth in these pages are the very essence of good psychotherapeutic practice. A few of the topics Daugherty covers in remarkably few pages: how information can help you take charge of a problem; the importance of accepting and acknowledging your ambivalent feelings about other people; why anger is valuable and how it can be used constructively; how to manage fear and anxiety; how to build a capacity for trust; how identifying the options among which you can choose will make you feel better; and how to build your self-esteem and increase your enjoyment of life. Daugherty's recommendations stress the importance of honoring and being guided by your feelings. Her wisdom and compassion will come as a boon to anyone seeking greater understanding of him- or herself as well as others.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good beginning book
As the blurb says, this is a "good beginning book." In clear, simple English--not psychobabble--it explains the experience of child sexual abuse, its effects on victims, and ways that former victims can change their lives for the better. It also contains stories told by victims about their abuse, and a guide to further information and help. The section on how to select a therapist is especially helpful, for people going that route.

The book is easy to read. Its everyday language and basic explanations may seem overly simplified to some readers, but this is not really a problem if a "beginning book" is what you want. People who have already done a lot of reading in the field will find no "sophisticated" approaches here--just good, practical suggestions for ways to feel better.

The book addresses male as well as female victims and both "conservatives" and "liberals" should find it useful. The informal writing style helps readers connect with the author. She is clearly knowledgeable about child sexual abuse and inspires confidence not only in her guidance but in the reader's ability to heal.

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to start learning about recovery from child sexual abuse.

This is a great book. It really helped me. The stories from other people who were molested when they were kids helped me see that it happens to lots of people in lots of different ways. There were stories from boys too so it is not just something that happens to girls.

The book was easy to read and it was quick. You could just read parts of it at a time. It also made sense and sounded like the author really understood. I have never talked to a counselor before but I am thinking about doing that now.

At the end of the book it tells you that if the book was helpful you should loan it to a friend who needs it. I have been doing that except I bought some books and gave them to my cousins who were molested by the same uncle as me. They said they liked the book too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Child Abuse:Medical Diagnosis Management 3rd Edition
Definitely worth looking for products through Amazon.com.Money saving and as current as possible

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic reference text on Child Abuse & Neglect
On the brink of the 40th year of the formal recognition of child abuse and neglect, editors Robert Reece and Stephen Ludwig have brought to the field a textbook that embodies the critical elements of the scientific foundations of current medical understanding of maltreatment. Originally primarily a social action issue, the field of child abuse and neglect has matured into a medical subspecialty, built on a solid foundation of scientific study. Dr. Reece's first edition, published in 1994, represented the state of the art at that time; this second edition sets a new standard as the preeminent textbook in the field. Incorporating the latest in clinical and research knowledge in the field, this exhaustive edition is almost 25 % larger (590 pages) than the first, has 21 chapters, 33 contributors, 265 illustrations and 2660 references. The contributors have written in a style that nicely balances the academic and clinical aspects of our understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of child abuse.

With a few exceptions (biomechanics, imaging, photodocumentation, medicolegal issues), each chapter is body system specific and reflects a significant refinement in our understanding of the mechanism(s) of injury in child abuse. Of particular note is the addition of chapters on the Biomechanics of Physical Injury, New Directions in Neuroradiology, Immersion Injuries and Conditions that Mimic Child Sexual Abuse. In the last 10 years, some of the field's greatest advances have been in understanding of the "pathology" of inflicted trauma and emanate from the study of biomechanics and the use of technologic advances in radiologic imaging. The contributors to these sections have done a superb job in reporting these advances in a clinically relevant manner.

Recognizing that the scientific basis of our understanding of injury is still evolving, each author thoughtfully describes the current state, and limitations, of our knowledge. This is a text for clinicians who have matured with the field as well as those just getting their feet wet, amply covering both the fundamentals and advanced aspects of child maltreatment. Readers will find this a favorite first reference to consult when confronted with a clinically challenging differential diagnosis regarding the interpretation of cutaneous, skeletal findings or anogenital trauma. The chapters on the Pathology of Fatal Abuse and Fatal Child Abuse and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome superbly complement each other and should be of great value to clinicians who participate on child death review teams.

Each chapter is strong enough to be considered an authoritative monograph on its own. The chapters on Abusive Head Trauma, Child Sexual Abuse, Neglect, Ocular Manifestations and Child abuse by Poisoning are classic syntheses of those topics.Charts, drawings, algorithms, radiologic images and color photographs provide meaningful adjuncts to the text, particularly helpful to the clinician.

Although this text is clearly geared towards health care professionals, it will also prove invaluable for colleagues in law enforcement and child protection who may be called upon to interpret medical reports and understand the "how to's" of the medical diagnosis of child maltreatment. This text could only be enhanced by the addition of chapters that assist clinicians in understanding child abuse and neglect in the larger context of the child protection system and that emphasize the role of pediatricians in abuse prevention.

Kudos go to the editors and the contributing authors for sharing their clinical expertise in a textbook that represents the cutting edge of our understanding of the medical diagnosis and treatment of child abuse and neglect. This book is a fitting tribute to the field as child abuse enters its forth decade.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Child Abuse Defense
Although shorter than Monteleone's two volume set, it has slightly different information.I would recommend it for every social worker, prosecuting attorney and child abuse defense attorney. The knowledge and information in this book, if available to all participating parties in child abuse investigations, would reduce their number and result in more reliable findings in courts. It's in no ones interest to have child abuse petitions litigated or founded unnecessarily, particuilarly the children involved. ... What's the difference between this book and that of Alice Miller "Thou shalt not be aware" released in 1984?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide To Grpwth
I was stuck in a cycle of self-blame until I read this book.Perhaps the most significant statement to me was one that expressed for every action there is a consequence. This dealt with the idea of confronting an abuser. While other books I have read pushed you to do just that, this one gave me the reality of what that would encompass.I was able to make a decision based on the checks and minuses instead of raw emotion.I definately think this is a wonderful book for anyone trying to grow out of old, repetative acts.A Plus Plus Plus rating!

Product Description

In April 2007, 62-year-old Eunice Spry was sentenced to 14 years in prison for the systematic wounding, cruelty, and assault of the vulnerable children whose welfare had been entrusted to her. Her home had become a prison where over the course of 20 years she routinely abused and tortured her charges. Behind closed doors she was a sadistic tyrant who beat her children with metal bars, forced wooden sticks down their throats, and made them eat lard, bleach, vomit, and feces. In this harrowing account, one of the victims of Spry’s wrath—known during the trial as Child C—tells the full, shocking story of his enforced isolation and the psychological and physical abuse he endured. Despite years of suffering and abandonment, with his mother now behind bars, today Christopher Spry is a survivor with a zest for life.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book touched my heart deeply
I just finished reading this heart-wrenching account of a little boy whose childhood was taken from him by an abusive, cold, heartless woman he knew as "Mother". I could not put this book down. I wish I could write young Christopher Spry a letter to let him know how brave and strong he was to go through what he did and come out the other side a good person. And I wish him twofold the love he missed in his youth. He touched my heart with his sad tale, and his tempered hope for the future. I do hope his future has true love and happiness in it, and that he will realize he is deserving of it.

This is a well-written account of horrendous abuse both physically and psychologically, and the confusion and hurt that comes from having a parent -- someone whom should love and protect you from horrors -- be the one who is administering those awful, inhumane, evil punishments. Tonight, I say my prayers for Christopher Spry -- may God heal his broken heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Life Horror Story
This is the second book that I have read about the abusive foster mother Eunice Spry. After reading about the lives of two of the children that were left in her care I would really like to read about the third child that suffered at the hands of this monster.
Most children are jealous of the material possesions of other children, but not Christopher Spry. After being starved for weeks at a time he's jealous of the pigs on their farm. Why, because they get to eat.
Doctors have told Chris that he will not be able to have children due to an injury caused by Eunice. This woman has already taken so much from him and then to hear that she has taken that from him as well is beyond hearbreaking.
Christopher seemed to want to say more in his book, but since Eunice wasn't charged with those things he can't talk about them becuase then she could sue him for defamation of character. Crazy right!? But from what he does say I think we can safely guess it was painful and horrific.
How anyone could look into a childs tear filled pleading eyes and do the things this Eunice Spry did is beyond me.
Eunice was always good at screaming quotes from the bible at the children and claiming they had demons in them, well here is a quote directly from the bible for her:

"But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea."Matthew 18:6 ... Read more

Product Description

This expanded and updated Second Edition of Legal Issues in Child Abuse and Neglect Practice offers a state-of-the-art exploration of what role the law can play in bettering the lives of victimized children. While all who work with abused children share the same goals, there often exists a gap in communication between legal and helping professionals that reduces efficacy of cooperative efforts. This new edition continues to provide vital information to non-lawyers on how the legal system in the United States works in child abuse cases.

Product Description

Michael Seed's childhood was a daily ordeal of unspeakable neglect, misery, and abuse from an alcoholic father whose tyranny ruined his son’s formative years and drove his wife to suicide. On a daily basis both Michael and his mother would fall under the man’s wrath, and one awful night Michael’s father began sexually abusing his son, a trend that would continue for years. Worse still, the abuse did not stop at home. Once he began school, Michael fell victim to terrible bullying and a teacher who violated him repeatedly. Despite the horror of these years, Michael was ultimately saved by his own will to live, which inspired him to seek a better life as a friar. This is the remarkable story of an individual who, against all the odds, managed to preserve his own dignity and finally escape the horrors of a stolen childhood.

4-0 out of 5 stars overcoming the odds
In some ways it was amazing to think that Michael Seed was able to get on with his life in a forgiving fashion after what he endured from both his parents and his grandparents.Obviously, religion played a big part of his acceptance of his childhood, but the book doesn't focus on that aspect.Michael denied to social workers that he was being abused even though it was apparent to others. His tale of overcoming a miserable childhood is a very compelling story.I would recommend this book. ...
