Product Description
In recent years, major progress has been made incombating child abuse.Between 1963 and 1999, the number of childrenreported as suspected victims of child abuse and neglect rose fromabout 150,000 children to more than 3 million children, a 20-foldincrease.Although some of this increase reflects an increase in theamount of child maltreatment in our society, most experts believe thatthe vast bulk of additional reports is the result of betteridentification on the part of professionals and laypersons.

As a result, many thousands of children have been saved from death andserious injury. The best estimate is that child abuse and neglectdeaths fell from over 3,000 a year (and perhaps as many as 5,000) inthe late 1960s to about 1,200 a year in the late 1990s.

Yet, many children continue to fall through the cracks.According tofederal government studies, professionals such as physicians, teachers, and day care personnel still fail to report large numbers ofthe maltreated children they see.

Simply generating more and more reports, however, is not the answer. In recent years, the problem of nonreporting has been compounded bythe problem of inappropriate reporting. In 1998, about 65 percent ofall reports were labeled "unfounded" after being investigated.(Thisis in sharp contrast to 1975, when the comparable figure was about 35percent.)Although rules, procedures, and even terminology vary (somestates use the phrase "unfounded", others "unsubstantiated" or "notindicated"), in essence, an "unfounded" report is one that isdismissed after an investigation finds insufficient evidence uponwhich to proceed.

Some professionals defend the high level of unfounded reports as thenecessary price for identifying endangered children. However, thedetermination that a report is unfounded can be made only after whatis often a traumatic investigation and, inherently, a breach ofparental and family privacy.Besides being unfair to the children andparents involved, inappropriate reporting places an unnecessary burdenon already overwhelmed child protective agencies--and threatens toundermine public support for their efforts. For example, over 40percent of the child abuse deaths between 1995 and 1997 involvedchildren previously known to the authorities.Tens of thousands ofother children suffer serious injuries short of death while underchild protective agency supervision.

Better--and more accurate--reporting depends on continuing publicand professional education efforts.Child-servingprofessionals--including teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers, day care workers, police, and others--need to be much better informedabout what to report, and what not to report. That is why I wroteRecognizing Child Abuse: A Guide for the Concerned. In aneasy-to-consult format, it was designed to help both professionals andlaypersons recognize and report all forms of suspected childmaltreatment.

The book has chapters on: reporting obligations, liability for failingto report, protections for those who report, sources of suspicion, physical abuse, sexual abuse, physical neglect, endangerment andabandonment, psychological maltreatment, parents with severe mentaldisabilities, interviewing parents, preserving evidence, emergencies, making a report, monitoring investigations, and being prepared, aswell as chapters for parents who fear that their child may be abusedor who have been reported.

Recognizing Child Abuse describes the most common reasons for reportsand the evidence most frequently available to support them.It alsoshows agencies how to develop screening practices that help preventthe investigation of inappropriate reports, describes interviewing andother information-gathering techniques, and lays out the steps peopleshould take after reporting. Finally, the book provides advice forparents, foster parents, and other child caretakers who suspect thattheir children may have been abused, who fear that they themselves mayhurt their children, or who have been reported for suspected childmaltreatment.Mark Battle, former executive director of the NationalAssociation of Social Workers, describes the book as a "nuts-and-boltsmanual for the people who must make life-and-death decisions." ... While watching Douglas Besharov's thoughts on the Satellite "Research Channel" I found some very disturbing information.

First.. Besharv never presented any source for his "Studies".He actually poked fun at statistics.I find his attitude extremely disturbing!

Second I turned on my computer and searched his book out and followed the link to an "Child Abuse" dot org site.It did not take long to find nearly every article written on this ORG web site was written by Besharv.
http://www.welfareacademy.org/

Instead of an "About Us" this web site should have said "About Doug".

Like the worst community college Instructor you ever had.. not only does "Doug" write nearly all the articles available on the subject of Child Abuse, but he has a wonderful page where you can BUY his Videos!

Considering the subject of Child Abuse and that Internet Video is available at no cost.It makes no sense to charge for videos that could save childrens lives. Or maybe Besharov is far more interested in himself, his bank account and his "Academy" whose only purpose is to sell and promote Douglas J. Besharov.

Social Scientists need to be held to a higher standard.Making unfounded claims and telling stories in today's digital world simply won't cut it.

To be credible you need to present solid numbers!Helpful, useful information that can save children's lives needs to be freely available via the Internet.

This book was first published in 1990.This is NOT the same country as it was in 1990.Doug needs to retire and a new book needs to be written supported by annotations, studies and an author that really cares about our children in trouble!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
A gem! Not only does this book tell you the tell-tale signs of child abuse, but it goes through the more subtle signs that many of us miss every day and tells you plainly and concisely what to do about it. If you have suspicions that someone, not just children, around you is being abused and aren't quite sure if you should get involved or not or haven't any idea of how to go about it, this book is certainly a good kick in the pants in the right direction! Certainly a must read for any person going into a field that may come in contact with abuse. Excellent for people that are wrongly accused of abuse or have abused children living in your home, this book is an absolute Godsend! ... Read more

This book provides a great overview to the healing process.Ellenn Bass provides excellent guidence in facing and dealing with sexual abuse. If the writtings in this book make sense to you i strongly suggest you read "The Courage to Heal" by Ellen Bass, which like many of us becomes your bible in facing, dealing and putting sexual abuse in its proper place.

5-0 out of 5 stars nice intro version to more comprehensive text
this book is a sort of primer for the more comprehensive texts by these authors: The Courage to Heal 4e: A Guide for Women Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse 20th Anniversary Edition and The Courage to Heal Workbook: A Guide for Women and Men Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse. i have found it useful for patients who are checking out these authors' writing/resources to see if they might be helpful, as well as patients who are worried that the full texts might be overwhelming. this book is a way to ease into the work for them. nonetheless, caution must be used when suggesting this book because it is still quite intense and can be overwhelming for some.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mid-shelf
It's okay, but not as good as "The Courage to Heal Cookbook," "The 30-Day Courage to Heal Diet," or "Winning at Blackjack the Courage to Heal Way," by the same authors.

good read. hard to get through some parts but theraputic. not helpful for every one. my spouce loved the chapter for SOs but my sister did not find it to be helpful where as i found it a comfort and a guid e to some of my emotions that i had fought with for a number of years

4-0 out of 5 stars Short but to the point - a useful gift
This book is aimed at people who were sexually abused as children and are avoiding the subject of their past or don't think it is relevant to their problems of the present. If you care about someone who is clearly failing to cope with life in general, and you believe they have been abused, then this book makes an excellent gift. It is delicate and offers examples to introduce the topic. It is surprisingly compact, with a fairly simple message, that will hopefully lead to empowerment to take the next step.

Out of the pile of books I purchased to educate myself and give to my survivor friend, this book was the one I chose to give her first. It is thin and short, so hopefully it won't frighten her off reading it. I was quite nervous about giving it to her, but it was appreciated. She didn't think it would be helpful though and I haven't convinced her to open it quite yet. I know it is what she needs to do. Being light on the details, it will need to be replaced with something heavier down the track. If we get to that point it will have been *so* worth it! ... Read more

Product Description

Clutching her eight-week-old sister in her arms, Frances Reilly was abandoned by her mother outside the gates of The Poor Sisters of Nazareth Convent. It was Christmas morning 1956 and Frances was 2 years old. For the next 13 years Frances experienced institutionalized cruelty under the care of her new guardians: she was beaten, raped, and molested on numerous occasions. The nuns stripped her of everything—her best friend, her innocence, even her name—but they could not suppress her spirit and her never-ending hope of a better life. Written with great honesty and integrity, this moving account of childhood suffering is a tragic yet inspiring story. Through it all Frances refused to be broken. This is her account of her resolution to survive and defy the evil that stole her childhood.

Product Description
At a very young age Amy Madden was exposed to the kind of inconceivable treatment no one, let alone a defenseless child, should ever have to endure. A brutal stepfather with a murky and painful history of his own found himself in an environment in which he was free to continue the cycle of trauma, committing unspeakable acts of sexual and emotional abuse against Amy and her siblings. Meanwhile, her struggling, overworked mother was unable to see the awful pain and damage that were being inflicted on her children. Amy felt ashamed, hurt, angry, and, most of all, unable to talk to anyone about what was happening to her. She felt as though it was her fault. The only route to dealing with the anguish was to submerge herself into a distrustful, insecure, depressed state. As have many survivors of abuse, Amy felt abandoned, unable to see who she really was, unable to hold on to any glimmer of hope.Only through a long, soul-searching process that involved a combination of therapy, study, prayer, and the eventual strong faith in the power of her own inner strength and spirit the innocence and beauty she had once possessed as a child was Amy finally able to reach a place of understanding and peace. Stolen Beauty is a poignant and necessary book for anyone who is seeking guidance through their own recovery from abuse, or for anyone who works to help survivors and abusers alike. Child abuse doesn t have to end tragically. There are ways to overcome our past. It s never too late to start believing again. It s never too late to recover the faith you ve lost. It s never too late to rediscover who you truly are. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pick it up
Some books are hard to put down, others like Amy Madden's book are hard to pick up. I just finished reading this memoir so chilling in its description of sexual abuse of a child that it gave me nausea. Reading this book is part of my current work/write regimen that requires sampling dozens of women's memoirs that capture different facets of toxic parenting. This is an absolute must read for anyone interested in this topic. What courage it took to write this book. Show a little courage and read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable testimony
Stolen Beauty: Healing the Scars of Child Abuse is the true-life memoir of Amy Madden, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse inflicted on her by her stepfather. Growing up with the shame, hurt, and vulnerability, feeling that the abuse she suffered was her fault, she retreated into a depressed, mistrustful state of despair. The road to recovery was a long and involved process of therapy, study, prayer, and developing strong faith in her own inner strength and spirit - the qualities she once possessed as a child so long ago. An invaluable testimony especially recommended as the experience of a kindred spirit for anyone seeking understanding during their own long journey to recovery from the trauma of abuse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, inspiring and a must read!
I devoured this book in less than two days! It's beautifully written and inspiring for anyone who has suffered abuse or is still suffering today from abuse. Madden offers insight to the horrors of abuse but most of all, how to heal from such experiences. Her reflections on healing and forgiveness are astounding and a highlight of this hard-to-put-down tearjerker. She brings home the point that having faith in yourself and learning how to love yourself is a key element in the forgiveness process. This is a must read for anyone who wants to heal from the bad experiences they may have gone through as a child. ... Read more

Product Description
Based on the author's extensive training and experience in working with abuse survivors, The Survivor's Guide to Sex offers an affirming, sex-positive approach to recovery from incest and rape. While most books on the topic broach sexuality only to reassure women that it is alright to say "no" to unwanted sex, this one encourages women to learn how to say "yes" to their own desires and on their own terms.Points of discussion include problems common to women survivors. Haines teaches survivors to embrace their own sexual choices and preferences, learn about their own sexual response cycles, and heal through masturbation, sexual fantasy, and play. The Survivor's Guide to Sex includes resources, bibliography, and an index.Amazon.com Review
Sex-positive and daring, The Survivor's Guide to Sexwill support any woman's pursuit of pleasure and confidence. In fact, its cheery outlook may startle those who have been addressing theseissues in guarded terms with a therapist, or who haven't put theirfears and desires into words. Haines ably discusses common negativereactions among survivors, such as withdrawal and dissociation, andsuggests ways to move on. Her chapters on "Sexual Response andAnatomy" and "Masturbation and Self-Healing" may come as a revelationto women who have repressed their sexual feelings, and partners, too, will find much of interest. Some survivors of abuse may not be ready, perhaps, for the advanced course in radical sex that Haines eventuallylaunches into, but it is still good to learn that "a suede whip willgive more of a thud that spreads sensation at first; it will give moresting as it collects body oils." --Regina Marler ... I know I'm not reviewing the book, but could someone please tell me why a paperback copy of this book costs over $60?

5-0 out of 5 stars ready to heal?really heal?
If you are really ready to deal with the physical sex act and heal on that level, this is the book for you. If the mere mention of the possibility of a woman having a woman partner bothers you, don't get this book. If you want to know what it's like for lesbians to read books about healing from sexual abuse where every single abuse victim is a woman and their partner is always a man...if you want to walk a minute in our shoes...this book is for that.it includes lesbians. it doesn't EXCLUDE straight folks.many of the other books ONLY talk about straight folks.IF I can read YOUR book and heal with the wrong "pronoun", then this book shouldn't bother you.just replace the pronoun to suit you like I have been doing for years.

women with women are abused as kids, men who are now with men are abused as kids.men who are not with women are and women who are will men are.NONE of these groups will feel excluded.and that'sa good thing.she tackle the hard stuff...it's NOT the first book you should read like some suggest. it's like the 10th.it's real and deals with real topics...like rape fantasy.and real stuff that us survivors actually go thru. it's not pretty and it's very healing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful guide
While cleaning, I found the title of The Survivor's Guide to Sex...written on a piece of paper from a few years ago. This prompted me to see if I could find an affordable copy on Amazon. I was grateful to find one in my price range. This book has been informative and helpful to me. There are questions, I'm too embarassed to ask or talk about with my therapist and the book fills in the blanks safely.

4-0 out of 5 stars Effective helpful
Excellent as a first book for a survivor. Or as I like to coin the term HERO. Those who have been abused are heros, who can continue to give back. This book gives practical advice that is not over the top and not too clinical.

I would advise this book for male and female victims of abuse. The survivors guide is just that, a guide. the work must come from within, and you must have the passion to move forward. If you buy this book that is the first step.

Courage comes from within and knowing when to ask for help. This book gives you just that.

Dan Williams, Autor, " Above His Shoulders." A true memoir of sex abuse.

"The office of the Presidency must ensure that the awesome power of government respects the rights of parents and the inteigrty of the family. If a President can propose taxes, regulations, controls and embargoes, he can propose, as well, ways to keep big government out of the school and the neighborhood and above all -- the home. As government became morally neutral, its resouces have been dnied to individuals professing religious beliefs and given to others hwo profess to operate in a value-free environment. Many of you, I'm sure, remember the controversy over the federally-funded textbooks known as MACOS -- Man A Course of Study -- which indirectly taught grade school children relativism, as they decided which members of their family should be left to die for the survival of the remaining ones. I don't recall the government ever granting $7 million to scholars for the writign of textbooks reflecting a religious view of man and his destiny." Ronald Reagan, August 22, 1980 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Revealing and insightful
This book is a compilation of hearings from parents in the 1980s regarding their childrens' deliberate abuse in the classroom in curriculum fashioned to persuade and psychologically probe young and impressionable minds without parents' knowledge or consent. There is a subtle and pervasive social and psychological movement trying to take over our children via the academic world.Very revealing as you are reading the actual hearings from real families. We would fool ourselves to think things have gotten better. As a once public school teacher, I can attest - they have gotten much worse. My child is homeschooled for this reason.

5-0 out of 5 stars I pulled my kids out of public school after I read this book!
It was very hard to believe that the kinds of things written about were actually going on in the public schools until my children started telling me that many of these things were going on in their school.Mrs. Schlafly correctly characterized these things as child abuse, & she couldn't have chosen a better title for this book.I pulled my kids out of school & finished their schooling at home as a result of what I read in this book & what went on in their school.Although the book came out in June of 1984, the public school system has changed very little in the interim because the system has found a way to circumvent the Hatch Amendment. My granddaughter is a 3rd grader and her mother & I aren't at all happy with many of the things being done in her school in the guise of education. She will most likely be schooled at home before all is said & done. This book is a must-read for anyone who cares about their children's education.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Harmful Effects of Putting Moral Relativism in Education
Child Abuse in the Classroom is about parents who have battled against ideological-driven groups who want to indoctrinate children using modern trend and pop culture as the standards of right and wrong. This is a collection of essays and opinion pieces of testimony that was used to pass legislation to guard both children and parents from having the government use nosy surveys and other suggestive materials on children. A must read for anyone who needs quotes for research papers or testimony in trying to stop Planned Parenthood or Sex educational advocates for the sexualization of children.

4-0 out of 5 stars Do you know what is being taught to your children?
The trend over the past several decades has been to teach children in a non-secular manner, protecting the "separation of church and state" in the eyes of the government. However this has degraded into teaching somebody's ideas of morals, and religion. See what happened when the government tried to enforce laws AGAINST such teachings.I just wished it was more readable. The bulk of the book is word for word transcripts of the testimonies of parents and teachers at federal hearings. Quite often, these are repetitive and difficult to follow. Overall, this is quite good. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Abused Perspective
I wish that the books today on abuse emotional, sexual and physicial cover more about boys and men being abused. To me this is a missing element. I was abused all three ways by my mother and emotionally and physically by my father. I cannot describe the affect it has had on my life.It has lead to me being emotionally abused in my marriage and unable to respond most times and getting angry and causing abuse myself emotionally. I have addressed this with counseling and am ok now.But not addressing the subject of abused boys and men is like treating the illness without trying to find a cure.Shelter Houses for women and children are great which are and have been abused but they are only part of what is needed. We should seek to help the boys and men, they are trapped and want out but need someone to help them find the door to freedom from it all. Good Book, but more is needed to address the subject completely rather then making boys and men the ememies and victims of well intended books causing more emotional abuse to them with no help in sight.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not honest about religious content
I read the contents, the description, and the first pages. The preview of the first pages stopped right before the religious bull.I also looked at contents and read a few pages from surprise, and in none of this was there any indication of the religious this guy is selling.I felt somewhat abused, because I bought the book to obtain insight and learn more about emotional abuse, not to listen to the author's platform on his religious views. If I was aware of the content, I could have made a more informed decision.Any rate, seemed very dishonest to me.

Decidedly christian bent, that doesn't speak to other religious beliefs or lack of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Significantly healing just to read it.
So many of us have grown up in a society where, if abuse is even recognized, it is not considered really damaging unless it is physical or. God forbid, sexual. Not enough emphasis has been placed on how deeply wounding emotional abuse can be on an individual. Sure, the media has sometimes identified cases where severe bullying has wreaked havoc on adolescent development. I cannot think of a book, however, that is more comprehensive on the subject of emotional abuse than Healing the Scars of Emotional Abuse. I first saw the book for sale at an Army post exchange. Thumbing through it I later decided to purchase it through Amazon.com. I am really glad I did. It was most informative.
There are four parts in the book:
Part 1 concentrates on understanding emotional abuse from defining it to explaining why it is so common and informing the reader just how damaging it can be.
Part 2 describes types of emotional abuse identifying emotional abuse through words, actions, neglect and even a chapter entitled "Spiritual Abuse: The Bible as Bludgeon."Finding myself living in the Bible Belt of the United States I was naturally drawn to that chapter. I agreed with the author that religion should CONTRIBUTE to an individual's self esteem. The author admitted however that "unfortunately religious faith HAS been used as an abusive weapon in a relationship." This is perhaps the FIRST book I have ever read that dared to admit this. Indeed in my many years employed as a domestic violence social worker I had seen men feeling justified in emotionally, physically and/or sexually abusing their wives because they did not "submit" to them in the way they felt the Bible was directing them to do. This was so sad. God should be seen as a source of true love and enduring comfort not as a creul and punishing diety.
Part 3 describes the many effects of emotional abuse including the effects on sense of self, physical effects and effects on relationships.
Of course my favorite part was Part 4 describing how to overcome emotional abuse by first recognizing your abuse and its effects, getting over the past and living for the future and restoring your self. It was a great help to me in continuing my personal journey to overcome the effects of emotional abuse I endured as a child.
This is a most important book and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has suffered abuse either in their family of origin, their husband or wife, partner or singificant others.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too General

Product Description
Dr. Patti Feuereisen has been working with teenage girls for twenty-five years and has been a pioneer in helping abused girls find their voices. What she discovered in listening to hundreds of girls was not only that sexual abuse of young girls is in fact epidemic, but if the abuse can be processed when girls are still young—in their teens and early twenties—remarkable healing can take place. Girls and young women who are given an opportunity to speak out will most often go on to thrive as adults; without such an opportunity the traumatic effects of their abuse will often continue to cause them difficulty long into adulthood.

Invisible Girls weaves together powerful first-person narratives with gentle guidance and seasoned insights to help girls through the maze of feelings that swirl around the abuse experience. This gives every young woman who has experienced sexual abuse the courage that comes from knowing that she is not alone and that she can be vibrant, healthy, and whole. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW This Book is the Best EVER!!!!
I have purchased the book for myself and am ordering another for a soldier in the war as she was raped a few years back and has been promiscuous and does not have understanding as to why. I read a little of the book to a friend from the group and she wants to read a copy do here in little Michiganthe book is becoming popular and helpful. I decided to buy it after reading a few blogs on facebook and it has already helped me to understand more than I have ever learned from a book.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is Good, but please do not stop here
Predator Down

I can completely relate to the material here. What I want to do in this review is help by suggesting a book that is about Prevention of Sex Abuse, or a way to help stop abuse.

We keep treating sex abuse after it has happened. I read Predator Down by Marco Cota, I bought 5 of the books and gave them to males who I thought would benefit. Now that I think about it anyone would benefit from it. These men thanked me with true gratitude!

Now this book Invisible Girls is a very good tool for after the fact and I read it and got some new info out of it. But if the abuser had read Predator Down beforehand I really think he would not have abused.

If you are a female I really suggest you look up Marco Cota and his book on Sex abuse prevention and give it to every male you know.

5-0 out of 5 stars A review from a male reader
Both as an educator in the field of sexual violence prevention, and just as a regular guy, I must recommend Invisible Girls: The Truth About Sexual Abuse to anyone who is dealing with sexual abuse in their life. Including survivors and their friends, family members, and romantic partners.

In my professional life, I have literally attended hundreds of lectures and studied dozens of books, studies, or professional papers regarding sexual abuse. However, Invisible Girls reached out to me and effected me in a way I had never experienced. For the first time I heard in shocking detail what sexual abuse was like to experience from the perspective of the survivor. It helped me understand how sexual abuse occurs and is allowed to continue before, during, and after the incident(s). I can now use this knowledge to better educate the public and help expose this unspoken crime.

In my personal life, Invisible Girls went even further to help me. Even though I am not a survivor, sexual abuse has affected my life in horrific ways. As I have grown into adulthood, I have slowly discovered just how many of the women in my life had experienced abuse. Each time someone else I cared about disclosed her victimization, I felt lost, angry, and confused. I had questions that couldn't be answered and feelings that couldn't be explained.Dr. Patti word's helped me understand when my loved one's own words couldn't. And she let me know I was not alone.

I fully support, both professionally and personally, Dr. Patti and Invisible Girls: The Truth About Sexual Abuse.

5-0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too
One out of four American girls will experience some sort of sexual abuse by age sixteen. It's a sad but true fact in our society. This book is for the girls who have been there and those who care about them.Dr. Patti answers questions from young women honestly and compassionately.

The main chapters in this book cover abuse by family members, boyfriends, acquaintances, strangers, and other adults. This novel also discusses the emotions stemming from sexual abuse along with coping and healing methods. There are many different paths to healing, including therapy and family support. The message is clear throughout:you aren't alone and it's not your fault.

INVISIBLE GIRLS was difficult to read at times due to the subject matter, but it made me aware of support systems and resources that are available to women who have faced this horrible trauma. Many young women shared their painful stories and there is an epilogue about how they found their strength to be visible and continue living.

I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Psychologist enthusiastically recommends to parents, teens and colleagues
Within a matter of pages, I realized I'd be enthusiastically recommending this book to colleagues, parents, and teens. Refreshingly free of psychological jargon, it is an easy to digest and realistic portrayal of sexual abuse.More importantly, it is the much needed voice of those who have been there telling us what it's like, how they survived, and what they need to heal and thrive.
The author has been in the trenches with hundreds of girls who have shared their stories of trauma and healing with her. From popular and seemingly confident track stars molested by their coach, to quiet and insecure daughters abused by their fathers and stepfathers, to impoverished and neglected young teens who turn to the streets, Dr. Feuereisen finds common themes among these survivors.
First, the basic premise of her book is that the best way to heal from sexual abuse is to talk about it, and that the best time to talk about it is while you are still young.I agree wholeheartedly, though healing can happen at all ages and it's never too late to speak up.But when we're younger, we're still growing and changing and formulating our view of ourselves. The good news is that teen and young adult girls are resilient and naturals at healing.
Another theme is that families have got to wake up, realize how vulnerable our girls are, and step up to provide protection.Perhaps the greatest insurance against continuing abuse is having a psychologically strong and available mother.Don't' misunderstand - the author isn't blaming mothers for abuse. But she is - with no apologies (and with my support) - holding them accountable for being a role model of strength, openness, and support so that their daughters come to them immediately after even one incident of sexual abuse. The fact is, most therapists will tell you that they have never encountered ongoing sexual abuse in families with genuinely strong mothers who are in tune with their daughters.
If you want to give your daughter an insurance policy against abuse, leave this book lying around for her to see.More importantly, of course, take care of yourself and be the woman you want her to grow into.Insecure? In an unhealthy relationship? Afraid to speak up? Always taking care of everyone but yourself?Your example will truly shape her. Let it empower, not limit.
We always learn best from others who speak from the heart, and this book is full of young women who tell it like it is. They are inspiring, powerful, and the antithesis of "victim".I am grateful to the author for bringing their voices to us.

Product Description
Stop abuse before it starts!

Identifying Child Molesters: Preventing Child Sexual Abuse by Recognizing the Patterns of the Offenders will teach you to better protect children from potential child sexual molesters long before any abuse can actually occur. Here you'll learn to recognize and understand the seemingly invisible steps that typically precede child sexual abuse. These stories of molesters, their families, and their victims, will enable you to more accurately see through a potential molester's charming demeanor and better protect the children in your life.

Understanding the behavior that molesters often exhibit when trying to obtain access to children is essential to protecting children from their advances. By becoming familiar with this terrain you will find the courage and strength to decide what must be done, and the skills to follow through with the necessary actions. Such responses will appropriately curtail an offender's access to children and subsequent opportunities to molest.

Identifying Child Molesters will teach you:

  • how to recognize those who might molest
  • how molesters typically 'charm’adults
  • how societal attitudes help to foster child sexual abuse
  • what to do when encountering a potential molester
  • what physical and emotional damage molestation can cause to victims
  • how to graciously avoid potentially dangerous situations
Identifying Child Molesters: Preventing Child Sexual Abuse by Recognizing the Patterns of the Offenders clearly spells out the techniques that child sexual molesters so successfully use to charm adults into giving them access to children. When these strategies are seen and understood, adults can take much more direct responsibility for preventing child sexual abuse than was previously possible.

Anyone who lives or works with children needs to own this book. The information you'll encounter in Identifying Child Molesters might startle you, but it might also help you save the life of a child! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for parents, teachers and health professionals
As a mental health professional, I have found both of Dr. Carla van Dam's books, Identifying Child Molesters, and The Socially Skilled Child Molester to contain valuable information in recognizing the red flags in those who molest children. The books distinguish the operating techniques of those who abuse from those who do not. They are valuable in providing adults with information that helps keep kids safe. I recommend the books to parents, teachers, child care providers, health providers and the general public. Most people don't understand the grooming techniques of child pedophiles, and these books provide eye-opening information.
