Description:
Public spending on child-care has grown steadily over the past two decades, flowing to parents in the form of portable vouchers, especially in the wake of the 1996 welfare reforms. At the same time, Head Start and state preschool programs continue to allocate funds directly to neighborhood and school organizations. Little is known about how diverse low-income parents enter this mixed market of child-care providers, then select from among centers and after-school programs, licensed day-care homes, or individual caregivers. Do parents' attributes, along with participation in welfare, affect whether they enter the market or instead rely on nonmarket caregivers, and what type of care they select? To what extent does the local availability of programs condition parental choice? We address these questions, drawing from interviews with 1974 employed parents moving from welfare to work in three California counties. We found that married parents, Latinos, Vietnamese, and non-English speakers, in general, were less likely to select a center or formal after-program, instead relying on home-based providers. Parents with higher school attainment, working longer hours, and earning more were more likely to choose a center or after-school organization. The ages and number of children in the home were related to selection patterns. Non-English speaking parents residing in neighborhoods with more abundant enrollment slots in child-care centers were more likely to choose such a program. We discuss implications for how we theorize about diverse poor families making choices in mixed markets, or being allocated to organized child-care opportunities across variable neighborhoods. es making choices in mixed markets, or being unequally allocated to organized child-care opportunities across quite variable neighborhoods. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just what we wanted.
We already had this item for our older child, and wanted it for our younger child. We were able to get the same one, and for much cheaper than in the bookstores.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only a 2 Star for condition of item/ 5 Star for the book
I received this item well packaged but it must have been mishandled before it made it in the box or I must have been sent some previously returned items. The rings were damaged on the two books I ordered from Amazon. One was really filthy on the outer cover. Both books were printed in 2008. I had already previously bought this book in 2003 for my older daughter and ordered two more for my younger sons. My daughters book was printed in 2003 and despite being used for years, was in way better condition than these newly printed newly purchased books from Amazon. My son had already been waiting for his book to come in so I went ahead and wiped the covers with a baby wipe and got most of the dirt off but its still slightly stained as it is cardboard/paper cover. I plan on getting my husband to fix the rings on the binder with some pliars so that they close correctly as they overlap currently and snag the pages.

I actually LOVE this book. I love that its ring bound and you can add pages. We already did one for my daughter and there were a couple of years we missed some information on but it doesnt matter to her or me. We got most stuff filled in and we added clear pages and album pages to after each year to include awards and report card and extra pictures. The book has binder label inserts to transfer all the pages over to a larger binder in the future should you run out of space. You can certainly continue to add pages at the end for grades 6-12. I plan to as my daughter is currently in the 5th grade. My kids are really love thier books as well and help in adding pages to it.

My two stars are for the condition of item Amazon sent to me. I give the book five stars. If you order and get a damaged book return it. I would have had my son not been so excited to get his book started.

4-0 out of 5 stars School Year Keepsake Book
I really like this book, but wish their was more room for the school pics!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Keepsake
This book is fantastic. My daughter is only in Kdg and already loves going back to see her two years of pre-K chronicled. And, since I've fallen WAY behind on my scrapbooking, I can fill bits and pieces of this out whenever and not feel guilty for not keeping up!I chose this particular book b/c it was in the form of a three ring binder.I was a little leary that it was going to come across as cheap, but that is not the case at all.The cover is sturdy (it even comes with an extra 'cover/spine' in case you fill it up and have to start another one), and the pages are very relevant.I am able to put a lot of really good info in there that I know my daughter will appreciate as she gets older.I also love the fact that if you have a three-hole punch, you can put anything in there in a matter of seconds.I use clear plastic sleeves for photos, but everything else (awards, etc) gets punched and put in.I'm getting ready to buy another one for my son.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice addition but not enough pages
I really like this book as an addition to my girls baby books. However, it only gives space for one year of nursery school and one year of pre-school, two would have been better. They also recommend putting in more pages for additional school work, I wish they would have included those already. Overall however I really like this book and would buy it again. ... Read more
