5-0 out of 5 stars A safety capsule for parents !
This is a brilliant guide for parents whomay be starting to realise that they cannot change their teenager but that somehow they need to do something different themselves . Good solid advice and what is almost a workbook for adressing a wide range of teenage related difficulties. I found ideas in here that helped a lot when I had teenagers and as a therapist it is a book I recommend to clients ! It is the best practical book on the topic that I have come across. It addresses well the issues of responsability , control and values as they relate to struggling with one's teenage kids ! ... No parenting library is complete without this childcare classic. Recently revised, the sixth edition still provides the sensible, compassionate advice and hard-core how-to-do-it tips that Dr. Spock has always been famous for. Whether it's mixing formula, treating chicken pox, or dealing with divorce or a child's homosexuality, Dr. Spock is the man.Book Description

5-0 out of 5 stars Spock's Still the Authority
Ten years ago with the birth of my first child, I received 6 different books on baby care--all from the best sellers list.Over the next 10 years each of them, at one time or another, was heaved against a wall at 2 am or tossed into the kitchen trash can.Dr. Spock's Baby and Child Care helped me to correctly diagnose croup in my 6 month old daughter, which led to a call to the pediatrician as opposed to a trip to the ER.Dr. Spock calmly and reassuringly helps parents learn THEY are the experts about their own children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing else as thorough and easy to read
As a second-time mother who's read Dr. Spock, Dr. Brazelton, and Dr. Sears' baby care books, I still reach for Spock whenever I have a question, or an uncertainty about something. This book is extensive in its coverage of both big and little issues, from diapering to feeding, and on into adolescence, ecompassing details as well as emotional aspects of what you're doing, if applicable. I find his philosophies and techniques to be a terrific common sense, middle ground, and reassuring resource. Even if you enjoy other parenting books, this one is a must- sort of an encyclopedia of infant/child issues, as the index is detailed and thorough. Keep this one in your library!

5-0 out of 5 stars For those who read it thoroughly, an excellent work
It would appear that some reviewers vehmently loath Dr. Spock yet they quite blatantly have missed the very key point of everything he said. Throughout the book he stresses numerous times the importance of following YOUR instincts and that he is only SUGGESTING methods for CERTAIN situations and he states quite clearly that it is of the utmost importance to realize that every child is different and parents are human and therefore you should not apply his methods, or any other "experts" methods to ALL cases without using YOUR OWN judgements. The core of everything Dr. Spock said was love your children and enjoy the experience of being a parent. He gives confidence to first time parents and a great deal of helpful advice on every aspect of baby and child care. One can get a great deal out of Dr. Spock's work, but only if they are patient, thorough readers with a certain amount of common sense.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Final Frontier... of childcare?
Any "Star Trek" fan would not want this book! It turns out it's not about "Star Trek"! It's about Childcare! Who would have guessed? We're loosing power, Scotty!

3-0 out of 5 stars Dr Spock and Baby Wise
I own both of these books, and I've read Sears too.I think they are all a little extreme in their beliefs.I don't believe in letting your child sleep with you, so that's why I put a cot in my twins' room and slept with them the first 3 months.I believe in teaching good sleeping habits because I know that it is BEST for my child, and I'm willing to look at their long-term happiness and not just their short-term happiness, and ways to ease MY conscious.I pushed my children a little every night to sleep further and further, and it was not a traumatic experience at all.Once they proved to me that they could do it we never looked back.My twins have slept from 8pm to 7am since 3 months of age, and only get up if they are sick.I've not let them get sick often so I haven't had to worry about them forming the habit of waking up.They are extremely secure with putting themselves back to sleep without my assistance if they happen to wake up for no reason. My kids take wonderful naps because I truely believe that a well rested child sleeps better at night.I certainly agree with the other reviewers that you should never let your child scream until they vomit. That is just cruel!I just feel sorry for people who have 2 and 3 year olds who still get them up during the night.Shame on you PARENTS, for not doing your job!!! ... Pediatrician Michel Cohen delights in offering anxious parents unconventional wisdom about children and toddlers: "less medicine is often the best medicine."Following an A to Z format, Cohen successfully skewers myths about every aspect of childcare. Using generic case kids "Lucy" and "Jimmy," and "real questions from real parents" he offers a compendium of health care information. Whether talking about behavior (bed-wetting, thumb sucking, school anxiety), symptoms (green mucus, earwax or eczema), or prevention (immunization, vitamins, toothbrushing), Cohen's approach is fresh and his tone is wise and wry--when discussing the drawbacks of medication for carsickness, he suggests that the best remedy is a plastic bag. Consistent core beliefs underline Cohen's alphabet: Doctors should not medicate all ills, antibiotics weaken natural immunity, you can't spoil your baby, but you can spoil your life. This practical, enjoyable guide is limited only by its short A-Z format--the information is so clear and valuable that parents will surely want to hear more from Dr. Cohen. --Barbara MackoffBook Description

Dr. Michel Cohen, named by the New York Post as the hip, "must-have" pediatrician, has an important message for parents: Don't worry so much. In an easy-reference alphabetical format, The New Basics clearly lays out the concerns you may face as aparent and explains how to solve them -- without fuss, without stress, and without harming your child by using unnecessary medicines or interventions.

With sensitivity and love, Dr. Michel describes proven techniques for keeping your children healthy and happy without driving yourself crazy. He will show you how to set positive habits for sleeping and eating and how to treat ailments early and effectively. You'll learn when antibiotics are helpful and when they can be harmful. If you're having trouble breast feeding, pumping, or bottle weaning, Dr. Michel has the advice to set you back on track. If after several months your baby is still not sleeping through the night, The New Basics will provide you with tried-and-true methods to help ease this difficult transition for babies and parents.

Dr. Michel recognizes that you're probably asking the same questions his own patients' parents frequently ask, so he includes a section called "Real Questions from Real Parents" throughout the book. You'll find important answers about treating asthma, head injuries, fevers, stomach bugs, colic, earaches, and other ailments. More than just a book on how to care for your child's physical well-being, The New Basics also covers such parenting challenges as biting, hitting, ADD, separation anxiety, how to prevent the terrible twos (and threes and fours ...), and preparing your child for a new sibling.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New Basics by Michel Cohen
I absolutely LOVE this book!! All of the little concerns that I have had as a first time parent he addressed in this book. The things he said made me feel much more confident in my abilities.I would recommend this book to ANYONE that is a parent.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book.
This book is a god send. from illness to injury to behavior. I reference this book at least three times a week. I actually received this book 2 years ago for my baby shower and loved it so much that I just bought it for another mommy to be. The advice is so straight forward and simple. Just stick to this book and being a parent is fun and less of a challenge.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST baby book ever
As a new mother, this is the book I can not live without. I buy it for all my friends who have a baby. Whenever I am worried, this book makes me feel better. I have about six other baby books and when I consult them, for example if my baby has a fever, I end up feeling more confused and worried than ever. Dr. Cohen's advice on the other hand always consoles me.

He is to the point and no nonsense. I love his advice like you don't need to use soap or baby lotion on a new born. It is so true- it is not like they are dirty!Once they start crawling around of course that is a different story. But a new born just needs to be toweled off every few days with water. And you only need lotion if you are using soap as soap dries out the skin.

He is also anti nasal aspirators and rectal thermometers and all those other baby torture devices.

I read his book cover to cover as soon as I bought it and it is now the first and usually only book I consult whenever I have a problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Have for Baby Library!
...Contrary to negative reviews, this book presents excellent, alternative answers to common baby/toddler questions. The answers are simple, concise and listed in alphabetical order according to topic.Cohen is unapologetically forthright about caring for your child.... encouraging parents to RELAX and enjoy their lives with little ones!As a father of his own three kids, I'm certain his "unconventional" advice is given out of love! If you like the natural, laidback approach... this book will be extremely informative. It's not for the parents that run to the doctor with every runny nose or feed their infant new food in a "color order."Many pediatricians recommend the book, even here in the traditional Midwest... Cohen must have something right, his patients in New York are crazy about him!

5-0 out of 5 stars OH SWEET SANITY!
This book is exactly as "Instyle" reviewed it: Refreshing!

I expected to keep this book around and read a certain chapter
as the issue arose, but I ended up reading it from front to back
and the closer I got to the end, the more relief washed over me!
There are certain techniques, I probably won't use-I am not
altogether fond of the idea of letting my child run around naked and deficate on the floor when potty training (and I find it a bit odd that the author is surrounded by naked babies on the cover). However, most of the advice was common sense and, for a new mother, it is nice to know I don't have to bubble wrap my child.

I am incredibly thankful I chanced upon this book and recommend it, hands down. Even if you plan to read a variety of books on parenting, make this
your first-if only to realize there are some things that don't require
stress, overanalysis, and hyperventilation! ... Read more
