Product Description
Focusing on the parent-caregiver relationship as only an employer-employee contract is an attempt to bound something that is, inevitably, a sticky, unbounded situation. Parents struggle with issues that touch on the caregiver's value to the family, such as money, time, control, and autonomy. They struggle with what to call the care-giver and how to describe her role. They struggle with their attachment to her, her attachment to them and to their child, and their child's attachment to her. In addition, parents and caregivers alike struggle with separations, transitions, reunions, and finally, how and when to end the relationship. Undoubtedly, cultural and social class differences contribute to these struggles, but it is from more universal human dynamics that these conflicts arise. This book provides a framework to understand and manage the multifaceted relationship between them.. ... Read more

Product Description
Where do adult children find information on aging parents?   Doctors are not patient educators.  Well-meaning friends may have the wrong information.  Federal laws have changed in the past month.   Esther Has a Living Will and Other Fairy Tales for Adult Childrenis the one health care preparedness handbook devoted exclusively to help adult children know how to help aging parents before an emergency arises.

Adult children are often surprised that there arelimitations to their participation in their parents' health care and at thelevel of their parents' health care planning.Through a series of illustrative fairy tales (case studies), adultchildren become familiar with topics such as patient autonomy, privacy, safety, consent, advance directives, discharge planning, capacity, guardianship, palliative care, andend-of-life care.

Complex legal, medical, and ethical information is distilledinto a single, easy-to-read volume designed to facilitate inter-generationalhealth care planning.  Guidelines as tohow and when to ask for assistance as well as sample health care forms areprovided.

Completely up-to-date.Includes the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. ... Read more

From the author: Parent to Parent programs offer a unique model for personalizing family support services according to family preferences. Over 500 of these programs across the United States provide emotional and informational support through careful matching of veteran parents with referred parents who have a child with a disability. A national survey of Parent to Parent program coordinators and participating parents examined referral sources, program supports, program demographics/descriptions, and examples of best practices. Parent to Parent programs can complement health care services by empowering parents through information and support and should be an essential component of a comprehensive family support system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loving Care
The Callahans' son Owen was born severely developmentally and cognitively delayed. This book is a heartwarming story of love, tolerance and inclusion. The Callahans did everything they could for their children and Owen thrived into a young man who appears to be happy with his life and accepting of all others in turn.

Owen was born on January 3, 1960.He had 4 older siblings and did not present any discernible delays during his early months. In time as his delayed development became more apparent, services were sought for him and at the book's close, he was living in a residential school.

This book also discusses services that were available to them during Owen's boyhood and beyond. The tone of compassion is what makes this book distinctive. This is a wonderful book for all and an excellent lesson in how kindness can turn any ship around.Save a place on your bookshelf for this gem. ...
