5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent introductory overview of the phases of the Moon and what they look like!
If you look up into the sky at night sometimes you can see the Moon if the conditions are right. When you do see it, "the Moon looks a little different each night."These differences you see are part of a cycle, "something that happens over and over again."It's fascinating to look at twenty-seven pictures of the Moon as it cycles. It takes about one month for the Moon to orbit the Earth. You can see how the rays of the Sun can "light up the moon" and can often see this at night. When the Earth is orbiting the Sun, its shape appears to change.Sometimes you see a large, round ball and other times it can barely be seen.

When you don't see much of the Moon it "looks like a crescent, or thin curve."In the middle of the cycle "it looks like a half circle" and when you see that round ball it is called a full moon.In this book you will see photographs of the moon as it goes through the cycle. You will learn about these phases, you'll learn what a blue moon is, how far the Moon is from Earth, which planets we are able to see in the night sky, what color the "hottest stars" are, and you'll learn what constellations are.

This is an excellent introductory overview of the phases of the Moon and what they look like. This is a fascinating look at what we can see in the night sky.The large print, simple sentences, and accompanying photographs are a perfect introduction to astronomy for the young, emergent reader. There are two diagrams, one of the Moon's orbit of the earth and the second a generalized view of the Moon's phases. The photographs are impressive, especially the page where we see the twenty-seven pictures as it cycles. This is a simple text and does not discuss terms such as gibbous, waxing, or waning phases. In the back of the book is a more detailed paragraph discussing the Moon's phases, some "Fun Facts," a glossary, and an index. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book provides an excellent way to introduce the young student to animals and hibernation science!
The snow-covered evergreens and hardwoods show no sign of animal life because "It is winter."There are no animals in sight because many of them hibernate. We can see bats hanging inside a cave and a squirrel curled up on the underside of a log. When animals hibernate, it is as if they are in "a deep sleep."This is part of their life cycle and they "hibernate to survive the winter."It's not easy to find food in the wintertime because the "snow hides plants and other food."Bears will sleep in dens during the winter only to "wake up and come out" in the spring.A few types of snakes hibernate, but "most ground squirrels" do.In this book the young student can read about and see photographs of animals who are hibernating and they will learn about the cycle.

This book provides an excellent way to introduce the young student to animals and hibernation science. The emergent to early fluent readers will benefit from the large print and the vibrant photographs accompanying the text.Difficult words such as "hibernating" are highlighted in bold throughout the text and explained in the glossary. Each page has a single sentence with the exception of a one page discussion about hibernation at the end. This can be read aloud to a classroom or tackled by the early fluent or confident reader.

In the back of the book there is an index, a glossary, and some interesting "Fun Facts."A typical example is similar to this: "Here are some other animals that hibernate-chipmunks, hamsters, skunks, bats, prairie dogs, frogs, lizards, snakes, turtles, and some insects like bees and ladybugs."This is one in a series of six in the "discovering Nature's Cycles," an interesting nonfiction series you may wish to add to your homeschool or classroom shelves! ... I'm currently using Steven James 'Old Testament Interactive Stories for Young Children' for my Children's Church.I am coming to the end of the lessons, and because I liked it so much, I went online to see if he had other lesson books available.I was thrilled to find the same book - but for the New Testament.I quickly ordered and will be using it shortly.I highly recommend this book and all others from his library. He uses creative and innovative ways to teach the great stories from the Bible. When we implemented his suggestions for teaching, the children were drawn in to the story, were excited about the lesson and their interest never waned. The other teachers are still commenting about how great these lessons are.I'm hoping Mr. James decides to put out another volume or two. When he does, I'll be the first in line! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Eyes for Potatoes
Ever wonder about things? Ever wonder how they get the stripes in the toothpaste tube? Why carrots are orange? How jellybeans are made? Why the sky is blue? Where those missing socks in the dryer go? How some women always seem to know things you didn't tell them? Why Mr. Potato Head is smiling? Then this book is for you, Mr. or Ms. Wonderer.

From Eye to Potato is a hardback book from the Children's Press, a division of Scholastic. It's intended for ages 4-8 or grades 1-2. On the back cover we see the following information:
Guided Reading Level
Word Count 231
Decodability 76%
Sight words 33

Let's Take the Tour

The cover is outstanding and motivational. A lime colored spine features leaves from top to bottom. Dominating the front cover is a striking photograph of an entire potato plant seemingly ripped from the earth intact. At one glance we see potato foliage, stalks, roots and tubers, small and large. Beneath the large cover photo are three zoomed photos lined across the bottom. On the back cover is a photograph of flowering potato plants with these words beneath: " Open this book to find out more about how potatoes grow."
How could any reader with even a modicum of curiosity not be compelled to spread open the covers and dig in?

WORD HUNT - Seven words are pictured and respelled phonetically. These words will appear in bold within the book's text. The magnificent seven: eyes, fruits, roots, seeds, seed potatoes, sprouts, tubers.
Of interest - Roots spelled phonetically is "roots."

The story begins with a picture of a young boy eating a supper of peas, chicken, and fries. Introducing the text in large green font are the words "Yum! Potatoes!" The author then proceeds to explain the life cycle of the spud, from eye to sprout to plant, to roots, to full blown tubers. A close-up image of a sprouting eye actually looks hideous, alien, frightening, and disgusting. It's a wonder of nature that from such a gruesome element is spawned the paradigm of nature's bounty, the noble spud.

The book ends with a two-page extravaganza illustrating the potato life cycle in five steps, beginning with a sprouting eye and ending with the extraction of the potato plant from the ground. Subsequently the seven new words introduced earlier are defined and again spelled phonetically.
Interesting factoid - sprouts spelled phonetically is "sprouts."

As a send off to more reading adventures, the reader is left with four photographs of additional tubers: cassava, jicama, sweet potato, and water chestnut. Did you know that chestnut spelled phonetically is "c-h-e-st-n-u-t"?

Finally

The book's photographs and absolutely stunning, with uncanny clarity and detail. They are HD quality. My favorites are the tubers and the picture of the man ripping a potato plant out of the ground, roots and tubers exposed and dirt cascading to the ground.

Usually a book of this nature is hampered by difficult and challenging vocabulary, unavoidable and intrinsic to the topic. The author does an excellent job side-stepping these boulders in the road and yet conveying her message fully.

I really like this little book. I like the limited word bank, the fabulous photographs, the repetition of key words, the varied yet simple sentence structure, and most of all I like the subject matter. Were it put to a vote, I'd say the eyes have it.

A Child's Book of Blessings and Prayers

This is a wonderful book for young children. A great idea for grandparents to have at home or to give as a gift to their young grandchildren. Thoughtfully edited, beautifully illustrated. A "must have" for your child or grandchild'slibrary.

This is just a beautifully-written book with lovely illustrations.Perfect reading for any child. And a joy for adults as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Interfaith Collection of Prayers for Young Children
This book was perfect for my four-year old daughter. Written by a Unitarian Universalist minister, it includes dozens of child-size blessings, poems and prayers, drawn from all the world's major religions, and many other cultural traditions. Ranging from mealtime to bedtime, birthdays, holidays and everything in between, you will find a little prayer in here to cover just about anything. It is definitely an interfaith book, the offerings are each very brief and so best for young children, and many are poems, so if that isn't what you are looking for, this might not be for you. But I found it perfectly lovely.

Product Description
For parents of children ages 4-7. The Raising a Thinking Child Workbook is based on the highly acclaimed I Can Problem Solve (ICPS) approach for use in schools. The workbook, which is now available in Spanish, stands alone as a practical parenting manual and also serves as the ideal ICPS parent involvement component. Educators can use the workbook with parents to help reinforce ICPS classroom lessons at home. The workbook's pages are packed with dozens of activities that invite parents and children as young as four to play games, to draw, and to color the reproducible illustrations. And while children are having fun, they will also be learning ICPS thinking skills. Children learn how to think, not what to think. They learn to decide on solutions based on consequences. They learn to negotiate for what they want and to cope with the frustration when they can t have what they want. And they learn to understand their own as well as others feelings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars terrific behavioral learning tool
When my son began kindergarten this year, he immediately began acting out through hitting, pushing, and general misbehavior of all sorts. One of his problems has been lack of impulse control.

In response, we have been making our way through the "Raising a Thinking Child Workbook" together, and it is making a big difference for both of us.As a parent, I have learned to re-frame and re-phrase expectations in a more understandable way.The best growth has been in my son, though. He is now able to confront emotions and behaviors in a more thoughtful and clear way, and he has learned to curb his reactions and respond to situations in a calmer way.

Many different situations are presented throughout the book, setting up discussions of whether the situation is a "good idea" or a "bad idea" or whether things can happen before, after, or at the same time...and so forth. This leads into discussion of how both people in the situation might feel as well as possible solutions to ease the situation.

Some of the specific difficult situations that are presented include: child wanting parent's attention while parent is on the phone or cooking dinner, child throwing toys on the floor, teasing, fighting over TV/toys/video games, messy room. There are also many positive situations to discuss: child going to bed on time, helping to set the table, sharing, helping a hurt friend, etc.

This book is helpful both for child-child relationships and child-parent relationships. It has proven to be helpful for improving behavior both at home and at school.

Product Description
This book has been designed to help children with diabetes appreciate the importance of taking their insulin injections and being aware of what they eat. Although parents are of course primarily responsible for the care of their child s diabetes, it is important that the children themselves are aware that they too must take some responsibility. This book encourages children to follow the instructions given to them by their doctors and parents, to eat healthily, and to see their insulin injections as something brave that they do, that other children cannot! Instead of viewing diabetes and their daily injections as something negative, the story encourages them to think of it as something that sets them apart from their peers in a positive way. ... It's never too early to learn about cooking or other cultures. In Passport on a Plate, children can do both at the same time. This wonderful collection of more than 100 recipes takes kids around the world without ever leaving the kitchen, and results in great food they're more likely to eat because they've made it themselves. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for teachers
This is a wonderful book for teachers who want to teach about different foods from different regions of the world. Easy to follow direction. Recipes that range from easy for younger children toa little more complicated for older kids & adults. So stay at home or in your classroom and enjoy worldwide Cuisine!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and great for families!
I Loved this book. The layout and content was exciting and fun, and I really wanted to make many of these recipes. The countries/areas/continents covered are as follows: Africa, Caribbean, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Middle East, Russia, and Vietnam. The recipes vary in complexity with a guide for parents on how difficult and dangerous they were, and how much help kids might require. While some of the recipes were not exactly authentic (fortune cookies, after all, are neither Chinese, nor are they consumed there at all), but most were different enough to get a curious palette interested, but not so foreign as to alienate the slightly pickier eater.

Each region gets its own mini-table of contents, separating the dishes by course (appetizers, salads, soups; main courses; desserts...) Each region also opens with a section about the cultures, tastes, available food resources, etc.; the writing therein is fun and simple, and I thoroughly enjoyed each aspect of this recipe book. I highly recommend this one. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Geared more toward ARABIC to English than vice versa
A nice enough book with heavy weight paper.

Not really a dictionary from the English perspective. It is set up with 2-10 pages for each letter of the alphabet, A-Z.Airplane, Alphabet, Antelope, Antlers, Aligator are all on the A page. However, those words don't all start with Alif (A) in Arabic. So it seems this book would be better for an Arabic speaking child learning english than vice versa. Also, the index in the back is organized by arabic letters, so all the words in the book starting with Alif (A) are listed together in the index under Alif.so if you are looking for the word Alligator, and you don't know that it starts with Q, you wouldn't be able to find it in the index. It is not the best setup for English to Arabic usage.

I would have preferred to see the book set up by subject matter (parts of the body, days of the week, colors, types of vehicles, whatever)

The translations are accurate according to my husband, not an Egyptian dialect but standard Arabic. (I asked him to check it out for me after reading a review for another book that was supposed to be Arabic but the reviewer said it was really Farsi!!)

Had a hint of a musty odor.

I will try to find another picture dictionary. ... Read more

This book is great. It is useless information! It is fun,and it has some facts that are not usless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Instant hit
My 8 years- old instant favorite. He is constantly telling me odd facts that he read in the book and almost each conversation from him starts with "Did you know that.....". He loves to take it with him and share it with his friends.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for kids
I suggest you peek "inside the book" at the table of contents before buying this book for your child. Some of the topics covered include-guesome executions, Off with his head, pirate punishments, aliens, ghosts, the inappropriate facts go on and on, ugh! It's too bad it has dark elements.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything I Never Had to Know
I loved this book. I'm one of those people who likes to learn weird things, so this book was so much fun. With info like different types of ghosts, the world's deadliest animals, and everything in between, this one will never leave your bookshelf. I like re-reading it (and the sequels: Children's Miscellany Too and Children's Miscellany III) because it's full of cool facts. It's one of the few books that can prove learning is fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is one of the few books that my son (7) reads over and over again. It is filled with trivia that he loves to memorize. How much does the earth weigh? How to fight back in an alligator attack. How to juggle. World populations. Wild life spans. Most intelligent animals. Most disgusting smells. Just a few of the many. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for character development.
I bought this book as a supplement to our literacy based homeschool program.I'm using it to illustrate good character, and my 5 year old son loves the pictures and stories. He will sit and look through it, even though he can't read.He loves books and this is one he's enjoying a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great kid's book
I bought this for a co-worker's young children- read it quickly first to be sure it was appropriate-I recognized most from my own childhood, the stories my mother told. She always added the follow-up discussions on the stories and what lessons one could learn (Mom was a teacher).

I may have to find another one-My co-worker told me they liked it too.

5-0 out of 5 stars the children's book of virtues
I bought this for a little girl turning into a little lady.I love the stories in it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for children!
I read this book when I was younger. It taught me lots of things I never could have learned from watching other people.I bought it together with William J. Bennett's Book of Virtues.I read the stories and poems to my children (and myself). This should be required reading in school!

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of any child's bookshelf
I'm a big fan of Bill Bennett and once again he's produced a gem (I know, it's several years old, but I just bought it).

I have four children, the oldest being about 4½ years old. Both he and our 3 year old son love to "read" books; they insist on going to bed with them every night and they often stay up later than they're allowed to, flipping through the pages.Unfortunately there aren't many stories in this book that hold their attention, and the ones that do seem to be over too quickly. My personal opinion is that this book is probably more suited for girls of 4+, and boys of 5+.

The book is a very nice quality and the illustrations (every page) are marvelous. The stories are grouped by virtue, but each one is independent of the next, so there are many different ways to navigate this book.I would suggest this book for anyone with young children.

Physically, this book has a large footprint (from memory, it's probably 12" wide and 14" tall).

2-0 out of 5 stars survivors
This book wasn't what I expected at all. I wanted to read it with middle school, but the pieces are too long.

2-0 out of 5 stars It was okay..
It was not stated this was a children's book. Meaning the targeted audience age is that for children. It was a short book. The stories, despite the fact that they said they did not water them down or change them, were greatly watered down. Large parts of the stories were passed over, updates on characters were missed. They also tried to make the story seem more real by using words from the lanaguage of the people telling the stories. Thus making them having to have glossry of terms in the back, yet they would use words repeatively and not add them to the glossory. As well it was annoying constantly flipping to the back of the book. I also agree with many of the other comments in that once you get into a story it is over so quickly. This book is more like a summary of stories. They also kept constantly changing the point of view, first it's in a first person, then second, then third. I am an avid reader of holocaust survival stories and this just wasn't up to par, at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Holocaust Stories
I bought this book for my daughter as she loves to read stories about the holocaust. She found it to be a good book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This book has eight stories about survivors(all were children) from Holocaust of Nazis during WW2.You will be surprised when you read this book to know how each one came through the horrible time by amazing experiences. You will also notice they had not only luck to survive but also some power to get through which was the mind never giving up to live. You can get knowledge about WW2 as well especially which countries were taken over by Germany at that time. Moreover you can know how Nazis became to force Jewish people to give up their rights little by little.

4-0 out of 5 stars Student thought on a book
