I have listened to this recording of The Nutcracker since I was about 4 or 5.It has lulled me to sleep, it has gotten me excited for Christmas, and has cemented my love affair with Tchaikovsky's music.Claire Bloom's wondrous and velvety voice does an interesting rendition of The Nutcracker, with some extra bits that aren't in the Ballet, but make everything moretitillating. It's set to the Main Bits of the Nutcracker Suite, and....ILOVE IT!You should love it too. ... A great tour through history. You get to see, learn, and discover what children were like in the old days.

4-0 out of 5 stars How Children Lived
My daughter was captivated by this book from we got it.She read it from cover to cover and continues to share fascinating bits of information that she has learned from it.Definitely held her interest and she was even able to peek her younger brother's curiosity about the children in the book.

Well done.

5-0 out of 5 stars an illustrated history of childhood
This is how history should be taught to children -- colorful, informative, relevant.Within the framework of 16 two-page spreads about kids from different times and places, the authors present a good deal of historical information. This is the kind of book that will help young readers determine what is the same about being human and what changes over time and distance, and may well spark an interest in a particular period or history in general.

The book begins with a world map placing the sixteen children who will be featured, and then each child is shown (in chronological order) with a short paragraph of autobiographical text.Typical pages show the layout of a house, toys, school, and a miscellany of topics interesting to other children such as play, health, transportation, cooking or music. The emphasis is on colorful illustration and graphic depictions.Periods covered are Egypt 1200 BC, Athens 500 BC, China 150 BC, Rome AD 120, Norway AD 950, Mali, West Africa 1400, Spain 1450, Florence 1490, Mexico 1500, India 1600, Japan 1650, Australia 1700, France 1789, England 1840, Plains Indians 1850 and the United States 1920.

The book finishes with a short discussion of archaeology and history, a simplified timeline and a glossary.

This is another beautiful book from Dorling Kindersley, and a worthwhile introduction/supplement to your child's history lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Visual Tour Through History
If you sometimes wonder about how children lived in the past, this book shows 16 children living in their time in history. The illustrations are detailed, fill the pages and are accompanied by a text explanation.

On page 24 we find Giovanna living in Renaissance Italy in 1490. The text tells of how she sits for a portrait and how her mother is a fine singer. Giovanna's favorite possessions, like a printed storybook, a pendant and jewelry box are shown. They are pictures of real items from the Renaissance.

The first colorful page shows all the children standing on a map of the world. The following pages show the lives of children growing up in Egypt, Greece, China, the Roman Empire, Viking Norway, Mali Empire, a Spanish Castle, Renaissance Italy, Aztec Mexico, Moghul India, Tokugawa Japan, an Australian Desert, France, Industrial Britain, the American Plains, and 1920s America.

A fun Timeline puts the book in perspective and a glossary explains words like Aboriginal, Castle, Legionaries, Samuri, Shogun, Tea ceremony and Fjord.

Children will see the pictures, learn about the life of a child and discover how their life is so different today. This book was produced after consulting history experts and offers a fresh approach to history for young readers. The authors have degrees in history and education. Together they have written over 25 books for children on a wide range of subjects.

Simply fascinating and educational. Children will just love this book because it shows history in such a creative way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good but....
This is a wonderful book that I read to my 6 year old.I was expecting more pictures to keep her interest.I recall a beautiful kids bible book when I grew up that had great pictures that kept my attention. The photos here are wonderful but scarce.I give it a four star because it is well written and she enjoys it.It would be more fun however with a little more pictures to go with the story. Now I am going to add the other bible to my collection with the 1,000 (+) pages. That is an obscene amount of pages for any book, but maybe its big because there are more pictures. If that is the case that would work for her current age group and when she is older we can go back to this "big girl bible" as I now lovingly call it.I will let you know about the massive bible after I purchase it. Keep your eyes open for me to amend this review with a comparison of the two books soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love the images
This bible has wonderful images that help African American children see themselves as apart of the bible experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A special Bible for African American children ages 7-10
"My Holy Bible for African-American Children" is a King James version release of a special Bible for African American children ages 7-10, complete with bible book introductions, dictionary concordance, and colored artwork from 32 award-winning African American contributors, plus the complete text of the King James version. In addition, appropriate supplemental texts and resources (such as related spiritual verses, or poems, or reinterpretations of famous passages) are also highlighted along with the colorful illustrations. Insightful inserts such as "Faith and the African American Community (after p. 566)" help place the traditional Bible readings in an historical context for young African American readers. Complete with a special dedication page, "My Holy bible for African-American Children" will fill an established need for a large, special audience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works by Premier Artists Make Children's Bible Uniquely Collectible

"My Holy Bible for African-American Children" was edited by Cheryl and Wade Hudson, who have won national acclaim as the authors and publishers of their Just Us Books (designed for a young multicultural reading audience). It is recommended for children aged 7-10 and is the first title in Zondervan Publishing's planned ZonderKidz series. Like all children's and standard new international version Bibles, the language in this one has been simplified and made more accessible for modern young readers than that included in a standard King James edition. Moreover, it includes such strategically placed supplemental texts as lyrics for the classic hymn, "Wade in the Water," and an excerpt from Kirk Franklin's more modern gospel standard, "Stomp."

A major plus for this Bible--and one that makes it uniquely collectible-- is the fact that it features the work of seven artists whose paintings bring to life both traditional biblical stories and empowering scenes from African-American history. The artists include: Pat Cummings, Nancy Devard, Shane Evans, Cathy Ann Johnson, Anna Rich, and Javaka Steptoe, and Michele Wood.

Wood, the award-winning illustrator for the children's books Going Back Home: An Artist Returns to the South and I See the Rhythm, is represented by a half dozen richly painted illustrations in the new Bible ranging from images that combine Christian faith and hip hop culture to that of Civil War abolitionist Harriet Tubman leading escaped slaves across a river. More abstract works by the artist serve as color frames for additional writings about "The African-American Worship Experience" and for "Inspirational Quotes."

5-0 out of 5 stars I Like This Poem; I Love This Book!
The International Year of the Child - What's that?It seems nowadays that the idealism of the 1979 UN proclamation, along with UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, have been consigned to history, something quaint for collectors of stamps and other memorabilia. As the editor of "I Like This Poem," Kaye Webb, points out, there is always a poem to console us, to give us hope.

"I Like This Poem" was truly a labor labor of love, if you would excuse the cliche.Although Ms. Webb's name appears on the cover, it was her idea and will to have children in age groups, from Age 6 through 15, to select their own favorite poems. She did all the hard, less glamourous work of compiling the children's favorites and doing all the tedious paperwork in securing the rights to publish them. She went a step further, giving each child his or her say in why a particular poem is a favorite, a major part of the charm of the book.

Divided into sections by age group, children from a wide geographic area have selected poems, some funny and some serious but all that speak from the heart. What is interesting is that a good number of poems have been chosed from "adult" poets, such as William Shakespeare, James Joyce, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Walt Whitman, and Langston Hughes, just to name a few.Of course, there entries by Lewis Carrol, Roald Dahl, Eve Merriam, Robert Louis Stevenson, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Ogden Nash - again, the sheer variety makes this book an intersting read for young and old(er) alike. All this goes to prove that children can never be too young for classic "adult" poetry and adults and never be too young for "children's" poetry. The best poems, as I have said, speak from the hear, to all of us and appeal to all our humanity.

As this book was first published in 1979, you will not find the current classic humorous "children's" poetry from the likes of Shel Silverstein, Jeff Moss, Bruce Lansky, Jack Prelutsky, and Douglas Florian. That's OK - there are many fine collections by these poems on the market today. That said, a few notable writers are absent, especially those from non-English-speaking countries. For example, I would have loved to have seen at least one poem by Federico Garcia Lorca. Also missing are Emily Dickinson and Christina Rosetti, both of whom produced numerous fine pieces that would appeal to children. But the collection presented here offers a great deal to be savored.

Now, why did I mention the 1979 UN International Year of the Child?According to various sources, this anthology was compiled in honor of the world's recognition of the dignity of the child. This book does an admirable job toward that goal; it is, therefore, a mystery as to why the publisher does not mention this important fact anywhere in the front matter. The UN Declaration of the Rights of the Child, upon which the IYC is based, was inspired by Janusz Korczak, a Polish educator and pediatrician who cared for orphaned children and ultimately died with them at the Nazi death camp of Treblinka in 1942.Dr. Korczak wrote many books on the dignity of children, including "How to Love a Child" and "The Child's Right to Respect."By allowing the children to select their favorite poems, Kaye Webb book honors both these ideals. This is indeed an anthology to treasure.

5-0 out of 5 stars I like this book--a lot.
I've had this book
that's covered in dirt
for years
and years
and years.
(apologies to Michael Rosen)

I loved this book into the ground, the binding fell apart years ago, so I had to buy a new copy, and now the old one sits quietly in a special drawer at home.(I'm a college student.)

It has classics such as Rosen's "I've had this shirt..." and Masefield's Sea Fever.
There's everything from Anthem for Doomed Youth (Wilfred Owen), to "Be kind and tender to the frog, and do not call him names..."

Poems for kids, poems for everybody.
Best loved. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Give the Gift of Reading to the Children in Your Life
Searching for a read-aloud book that you might share with your children, you would score a consensus winner with this compendium of rich, highly captivating tales. The two selections from Jack London, "In Yeddo Bay" and "To Repel Boarders" were springboards for our youngsters beyond this book and on to "The Call of The Wild" and "White Fang."Similarly, short fables from Louisa May Alcott and Lewis Carroll opened our ears to continue with more famous, longer works by those authors.Rudyard Kipling's "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi" and Mowgli's Brothers", "Tommy and the Meadowmice" by Thornton W. Burgess, "Juggerjook" by L. Frank Baum, creater of Oz, and "The Voyage of the Northern Light" by John Townsend Trowbridge each held my kids' attention as we read them aloud at dinner or at bedtime. The inestimable Mark Twain weighs in with a novella "Tom Sawyer Abroad" that is a perfect followup to a summertime reading of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."There is plenty of selection here for everyone to be happy.Give your kids the gift of colorful, imaginative literature...then read it aloud with them.

If Mr. Buckley's politics or his pomposity is a bother, worry not about it here...he pens a pithy pre-amble, and among the classics also includes a modern-day computer adventure entitled "The Temptation of Wilfred Malachey."Just plain fun!

4-0 out of 5 stars connecting kids to nature
this book will help to create a connection and fasination for kids with the environment and give them much needed connection to health and exercise too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Activity for Preschoolers
I bought this book as a resource for my church's Preschool/Kindergarten Religious Exploration class. Each Sunday we have a class of 3-6 year olds for an hour.We break the time into short segnments and like to include some kinetic activities. They have together time, a spiritual message, a craft, a song, and then we use to play a game together. The games started getting a bit wild and sometimes too competative, so I thought a quieter physical activity like yoga might be a good fit. This book makes the positions so fun and easy: each child can be sucessful at thier own level. It has suggestions of how to use the poses, ways of advancing through the positions, a section sort of like a "teachers guide" so people unfamiliar with yoga (such as myself) can use it with confidence. The kids love doing Yoga and looking at the pictures to see how to do things. They are fully absorbed in trying to achieve the poses and talking about what a flower (or star or whatever the pose is modled on)feels like or sees or thinks. The book is very well done, thought provoking and affirming.I am fully delighted with it!! This is a wonderful adition to a young child's life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The official yoga book for kids
I bought a whole slew of yoga for kids books and this is by far the best one. All of the others repeat the information from this book, but in a less clear way and without the great pictures. This is the one to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Children's book of Yoga: games & Exercises...
As an educator, I found this book to be delightful, colorful and easy to understand. I would suggest this book even to adults trying Yoga for the first time. First of all, the layout and pictures were easy on the eye and I can see how this may attract young readers to its content, without an adult. The language and tone of the book was enjoyable. I think this is a good introduction to anyone beginning Yoga and I would recommend it very highly. Peace, Kind Essence (Karen thompson)

5-0 out of 5 stars Preschool perfection!
A beautifully illustrated book. Accurate and colorful. My class of preschoolers related to it wonderfully, using it as a guide for their own Yoga poses. They invented several and we took pictures to add to this stunning book. This Yoga work interested and calmed some of my more challenging students. Well worth the investment of money and time. Highly recommend. ... Read more

The text was way too hard for my 9 year old to read aloud to me.Then when I read to her I spent more time explaining what some of the words meant. The value of the content was lost. The book is not written for a child to easily understand which is ashame because the stories in general are very meaningful. ... The #1 children's dictionary in America is now completely revised with a stunning design! With more than 3,000 images and 35,000 up-to-date entries, the most trusted name in children's reference is easy to navigate and fun to peruse. Authoritative, accurate, and current, the Macmillan Dictionary for Children is the ideal resource for beginning readers and spellers.Amazon.com Review
Learning to use a dictionary is an important skill for youngscholars, and MacMillan offers a great edition for 8 to 14 yearolds. The Dictionary for Children is sensible, well designed, and illustrated with plenty of pictures. Each letter gets amini-exploration of its role in sounds and spelling; for example,"B has only one sound in English, as in bad andboth, but it is sometimes doubled as in rabbit. Theletter B is also silent in some words such as climb, comb, or plumber." Definitions are clear but notoversimplified, and homonyms are identified so that spellers won't beconfused: words that sound like flue "are flew andflu." The type is large enough to be readable, and thetone is serious but not pretentious. The MacMillan Dictionary forChildren has long been a favorite with kids, and this version, revised for the 21st century, is even better than previous editions. ... Read more

My six year old runs to grab this dictionary every time she hears a word she doesn't understand.Need I say more?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for 2-4 graders
My granddaughter, in the second grade, loved this dictionary. She actually browsed through it like a picture book, looking up words which interested her.It may not be as comprehensive as some for older children, but for the younger ones, it's great!

5-0 out of 5 stars For Grandaughter
We bought this for our 8 1/2 year old grandaughter and it is a great book. She loves it.Very well laid out and a lot of info.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great-grandson's Delight
My great-grandson is thrilled with his colorful dictionary! He reads it for enjoyment daily, in addition to using it for his homework. The illustrations are exceptionally interesting, he says. The model sentence included with each defined word leads him to the correct understanding and use of the word in context. Last week, he used his dictionary to learn the plural of the word "ox" and used it in his homework. He was the only child in his class who had a correct sentence. He is building a life-long habit.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read choice
As I was at the book store, I laid the 5 choices on the floor at once and choose words to see what each would represent. For this one, I liked the pictures, the descriptions that were the "right length" and it just felt right for my son. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value
After visiting countless bookstores in search of a illustrated dictionary less than $15, this was the only one I could find.I was able to purchase the 2 books I needed along with shipping cost for less than I would have paid for this book at a local bookstore. The book arrived in excellent condition, this will be my 1st choice in the future for purchasing books.

4-0 out of 5 stars very responsible seller
the seller is a very nice and trust person. Reply my email very quick. But the book is very poor. Like this kind of condition book, I don't think should put on sell. It is why I give the user four stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attention 2nd Graders!
My 2nd grader, a quite impatient little boy, loves this dictionary. He's amazed at the simplicity of finding words. He especially likes using the colorful pictures to find many words and is continually attracted to other words simply by the pictures. The bold print letters and the boxed words with definitions and sentences help to keep him focused.

5-0 out of 5 stars DK Children's Dictionary - A fantastic learning resource
The DK Children's Illustrated Dictionary is a fantastic English language learning resource for young inquisitive minds. The definitions are very simple and straightforward and have excellent illustrations. The examples are foolproof. The author truly knows children and their needs.DK Children's Illustrated Dictionary

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, strongly recommended!
I got this book when I was about 6 years old, I'm now 19 and I can still remember it very well! Great for teaching children about geography and other cultures, it certainly kept my attention. I only wish they could bring out another updated version!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book about the world
My elementary-aged children received this book as a gift, and it became a favorite. It's a really beautifully illustrated and written book, and interests the children in other cultures because its written about what other children their age would be doing, playing, etc., in other countries. It makes a wonderful addition to a home library.

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter and I enjoy this book
This is a great way to introduce geography by integrating it with the lives of children. My dd can relate to the child, and finds their stories interesting. It is effective at introducing and cementing facts about other countries in our homeschooling. I also like that it treats people in other countries with respect, and shows how similar people can be.

I wish there was a more updated version. The copyright is 1995, and some of the clothing styles are out of date. Also, it is a thin book, and I wish there were more children and countries profiled.

5-0 out of 5 stars Endless engagement
My daughters (aged 5 and 7) have loved this book - it has led to long discussions about geography, culture and the ways in which people live. We have written stories about the children in the pictures, and pored over the globe. This book has depth and is an invaluable way of deepening children's engagement and interest in other cultures. We did smile over some minor inaccuracies in the NZ page (not many children in NZ live with their gradnparents!) - but do not hesitate to buy this book for your children and grandchildren. And be prepared for hours of discussion and engagement!

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book
This is a great book.I enjoy it thoroughly, and so does my 4.5 year old daughter.During the Olympics, she has asked for it every night. She loves finding out about the other children and looking at the pictures. It is one of the best multicultural books I have seen.It does not focus on other cultures as historical curiosities or emphasize their differences.Instead, it provides a snapshot of what each child's life is like (parents, home, school, friends, etc.).It shows what is different while emphasizing common everyday life vs. festivals and traditions. It sparks her curiosity (why does that girl paint her face and body, etc.).The book can't begin to answer those questions, but that's what the internet is for. ...
