Product Description

The Art of Transition addresses the problems defined by writers and artists during the postdictatorship years in Argentina and Chile, years in which both countries aggressively adopted neoliberal market-driven economies. Delving into the conflicting efforts of intellectuals to name and speak to what is real, Francine Masiello interprets the culture of this period as an art of transition, referring to both the political transition to democracyand the formal strategies of wrestling with this change that are found in the aesthetic realm.
Masiello views representation as both a political and artistic device, concerned with the tensions between truth and lies, experience and language, and intellectuals and the marginal subjects they study and claim to defend. These often contentious negotiations, she argues, are most provocatively displayed through the spectacle of difference, which constantly crosses the literary stage, the market, and the North/South divide. While forcefully defending the ability of literature and art to advance ethical positions and to foster a critical view of neoliberalism, Masiello especially shows how issues of gender and sexuality function as integrating threads throughout this cultural project. Through discussions of visual art as well as literary work by prominent novelists and poets, Masiello sketches a broad landscape of vivid intellectual debate in the Southern Cone of Latin America.
The Art of Transition will interest Latin Americanists, literary and political theorists, art critics and historians, and those involved with the study of postmodernism and globalization.

Product Description
“Cultural Dimensions of Expatriate Lifein Chile” is a guide for North Americans who are planning for a long-term experience in Chile and who are serious about developing the kinds of personal relationships that will make them an integral part of the Chilean community.

If you are planning a sojourn in Chile you have no doubt already read up on many of the practical matters – how to rent or buy an apartment or a house, find a job, buy a car, pay your utility bills, start a business, get around Santiago, open a bank account, etc. This guide is a natural complement to all that nuts & bolts planning.

In “Cultural Dimensions – Chile” you will, perhaps for the first time, begin to understand what you need to know to manage human relationships in every conceivable situation you will encounter, from ordering a meal in a restaurant to supervising an employee, from obtaining a permit from a government official to forming friendships with people you want to get close to.

Many North Americans heading for a new life in another country, whether for six months, a few years, or perhaps a lifetime, understand the need to know something about the local culture, but few of us understand how important it is to understand our own culture and how that culture, which inevitably affects everything we do, say, and think, will affect us in the context of the new culture where we are going to live. After all, it isn’t just the people of Chile, or whatever country you choose to live in, who have a distinctive set of values, norms, beliefs, assumptions, and ways of thinking. As a person from the United States you also are a distinctive cultural creature – something we North Americans sometimes overlook!

Because of its large expat community composed of people from virtually every country on earth it is easy enough for an expat to live for years in Chile without ever going beyond superficial levels of familiarity with their surroundings. Chileans after all are almost all immigrants or expats somewhere in their family tree! The “Dimensions” series, which will ultimately include more than thirty countries, is for those who want more out of their experience than just the ability to impress wide-eyed newcomers with their ‘old hand’ wisdom over drinks at the local watering hole.

In this guide you will learn why your high school or college Spanish won’t be of much help in Chile – and what to do about it. You’ll be taken through an analysis of Chilean vs. US culture in multiple dimensions, using the format first developed by Dr. Fons Trompenaars in his seminal work “Riding The Waves of Culture”. Viewing Chile through Trompenaars’ seven dimensions of culture will give you a framework for organizing your thoughts ahead of time, and for integrating your personal observations as you come to know Chile and its people during your first few months, and beyond.

You’ll learn everything you need to know about the unspoken expectations Chileans have of others in a wide range of everyday situations – shopping, social visits, dining out, negotiating business deals, renting an apartment, dating, and more. You’ll discover what constitutes good manners, thoughtful courtesies, and tactful disagreement in Chile, and you will learn how to handle servants, tradespeople, bureaucrats, shopkeepers, co-workers, and police effectively and without giving offense or inadvertently creating problems for yourself.

There are also a number of sections that you will find useful beyond developing cultural understanding, including a detailed set of practical suggestions for what to look for and how to choose your apartment or home in the certainty that you will experience moderate to strong earthquakes while in Chile, as well as a uniquely useful Chile-specific approach to dealing with the inevitable experience of ‘Culture Shock’, which every new expatriate goes through.

Product Description
In Psyche Delicacies, globetrotting medicine hunter Chris Kilham gives an impassioned defense of five plants that have all been maligned to greater or lesser degrees. Weaving his own entertaining and illustrative experiences with facts about the substances origin and historical uses, Kilham strongly convinces that far from being bad for you, the five plantscoffee, kava, chili peppers, chocolate, and the ever-controversial cannabiswill help prevent and remedy physical health problems, and boost mental and emotional health. Whether avid coffee drinker or chili pepper aficionado, chocolate lover or part-time cannabis user, no one will feel guilty about moderate use after reading Psyche Delicacies.Amazon.com Review
Need a lift? Human beings have always been attracted to "psychoactivity," says author Chris Kilham, and have searched out mind-altering and mood-modifying plants throughout history. Psyche Delicacies explores the five most commonly used psychoactive plants: coffee, chocolate, chiles, kava, and cannabis. All are "exquisite works of nature" that "can fit well into a healthy, active lifestyle with little or no harmful effects," writes Kilham, a biological researcher and author of several books, including Tales from the Medicine Trail.

"We are built for pleasure," writes Kilham, who approaches his subject with passion. "Coffee is good for you, good for you, good for you." Chocolate is the "blissful food of the gods." Kava is the "peace plant of paradise." Hell is a place with eternally bad coffee. Kilham describes the history, lore, chemistry, cultivation, and benefits of his chosen plants, including his own personal experiences with them. (You'll never forget to wash after handling chiles after reading about Kilham's restroom experience!) He is opinionated ("I cannot in good conscience say anything good about decaffeinated coffee") and teeming with fervor. If you love any or all of these psychoactive plants, Psyche Delicacies is as entertaining as it is educational, and a terrific gift book. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read, intriguing info
Having read many adventure travel books, and explorations into ethnobotany, I am a hard marker on books in this genre. I was impressed with Kilham's writing style, narrative drive, ability to quickly sketch colorful characters, and skill at connecting the lives of indigenous peoples and their herb lore to the jaded first-world reader. (He also doesn't skimp on the supporting science, but doesn't bog the reader down in it.) I learned a lot about coffee, chocolate, pot, and other psychoactive plants/pleasures, and had fun doing it. Highly recommended, as a perfect hybrid of adventure travel (replete with very amusing misadventures) and healthy mood-aleration.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mismarketed
I thought this book was a decent read, and the author definitely knows how to entertain and pique people's interest. But this book seems to have been targeted to the wrong audience or placed in the wrong genre.

Clearly it's travel writing. It's the story of a guy who toured the earth in search of the ultimate buzz. I just wish the author, and/or his publisher, had realized that. This book would have gotten a lot more readers, and fewer complaints about lack of citations or scientific merit, if it had been titled "Journeys of the Mind: Across the world in serach of the ultimate buzz" (or something like that but a little less cheesy), and shelved next to the Lonely Planet guides. If he'd continued on in this theme, adding discussions of a few more drugs and adding another hundred pages or so, TONS of crunchy granola types would pick it up, anticipating long waits in Indian train stations and long days on Thai beaches.

Chris Kilham is clearly not a scientist or a health care professional. People looking for the hard-nosed opinions of such people shouldn't be looking at his book. He's an adventurer and an entertainer. His writing reads like a show on the Discovery Channel, and is clearly intended for people whose interest in science goes little deeper than the Discovery Channel.

3-0 out of 5 stars Strong opinions
This lively book is fun to read and will supply you with a lot of interesting factoids on its assortment of topics. Chris Kilham writes interestingly and well, and one's attention is riveted to his stories and opinions. The biggest problem with this book is that there are no footnotes and no endnotes. Kilham offers a lot of stunning notions, but does not cite his sources. For example, in his chapter on decaf, in his view "coffee interruptus," he asserts that the rate of suicide is higher among drinkers of decaf than drinkers of caffeinated coffee. Citation, please!

Read this book for its stimulating opinions and lively patter and a sort of pop-sci approach to its subjects. According to its author, this book is intended as a reference work. It's fun to page through, but in order to be a convincing reference work it needs the added muscle of citations and a bibliography. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Racism has existed in Chile at least since the conquest of Chile in the 16th century. Several types of racism originating from different epochs are present in present day Chile. Mapuches, mestizos, blacks, East Asians, Muslims, Peruvians and Bolivians are among the subjects of racism and discrimination in Chile. Conquistadores, colonial criollos and modern Chileans had different views on the native population ranging from admiration, views of them as barbarians, to proper self-conscious racism.Black people held during colonial times higher status than amerindians due to being so expensive, and were often majordomos. Mapuches on their part also made distinctions based on race and often denied meztisos being part of their society due to their blood bonds with the Spanish they were in conflict with. A person's status was measured by their racial make-up and if they were born in the colony or in Europe. The groups with major status were the Peninsulares, ethnic Spaniards born in Spain. ... Product Description
Poverty reduction remains as one of the main challenges globally. New measurements indicate that poverty has been declining in most Latin American countries since 2002. Some countries have pioneered the implementation of new poverty policies and programs, including components of social capital. This is the case of the Chile Solidario System (CSS), a national program created in 2002 based on the assumption that extreme poverty can be reduced by linking families to public social services. This research attempts to examine whether poverty reduction can be achieved through a social capital strategy and more specifically, by relating the poorest Chilean families to formal public social service organizations. The general objective of this research is to evaluate the early impact of the CSS on social networking and economic well being indicators of Chilean families living in extreme poverty. A Data-Mining Evaluation is the methodology chosen for this study. The primary data source is the CASEN survey, the National Socio-Economic characterization Survey carried out by the Chilean department of Social Planning. ... Read more

Product Description

This book explores the role of emotion and affect in recent Latin American cinemas (1990s-2000s) in the context of larger public debates about past traumas and current anxieties. To address this topic, it examines some of the most significant trends in contemporary Latin American filmmaking, including the emergence of the thriller as a preferred genre to address the legacies of the 1960s and 1970s; the rise of “youth” films about globally-connected and disaffected young adults; and the proliferation of transnational productions by “traveling” filmmakers that encourage audiences to feel for “others.”  The book features close textual analysis of individual films from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, and Mexico; as well as commentary on the changing structure of Latin American film industries.  It frames those analyses within a discussion of recent critical and theoretical debates about affect, sentimentalism and compassion, particularly as they relate to film.

From the author: Beginning in the second half of the sixteenth century, the southern border of Chile underwent a series of transformations that modified it into a space of commercial and cultural exchanges between indigenous and Spanish people. It is in this context that the poet Alonso de Ercilla y Zuniga observed and experienced the events portrayed in his epic La Araucana (1569). This analysis presents the epic genre as one form of ideological elaboration of these historical events, a form that presupposes an extraordinary leap between the specific and the universal. The literary and structural function of the poem suggests that this epic is one narration among many of its great theme: the encounter and interaction between two cultures that is the legacy of the Conquest and the Arauco War. The history of Chile, along with its social, cultural and political environment, has evolved through a reality of encounters, of struggles to accept, and of failures to reconcile, persisting even today. This article builds upon Miguel Angel Vega's critical study La Araucana de Ercilla (1969), introducing his main points as a basis for better understanding the importance of dialogue among cultures in Chilean society today.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Choice
Whenever I travel to other countries I like to take a novel that helps acquaint me with the people and culture of the country.Although my voyage to Chile was motivated by Isabel Allende's "My Invented Country, A Nostalgic Journey Through Chile" I was determine to find another Chilean writer to take on the trip with me.I searched the internet for a few days trying to finalize my selection.I was excited to find a copy of "Bad Vibes" at my local library. The reviews that I read seemed promising."Like Catcher and the Rye", some reviews touted."A contemporary Chilean coming of age story", was touted by other reviews.I found the characters dull and the story slow. After one hundred pages, I couldn't invest any more time with Matias and his group of drugged up self absorbed friends.Perhaps this is exactly what life was like for the privileged class of Chile during the 1980s but the real challenge for Fuguet is how to reveal that story to the reader (i.e. non-Chilean reader) in a manner that is engaging and enjoyable - neither came through in the novel.

In contrast, my visit to Chile was wonderful. The country is rich in history and culture. Thanks to very knowledgeable tour guides and local people, I was able to get a feel for the country that I wasn't able to obtain through the novel. While Allende is still my favorite Chilean author, I remain open to new experiences with literature from this country.Unfortunately for me, "Bad Vibes" was a bad choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fresh.
I read this book years ago and recently saw the film "Y tu mama tambien", which made me come back to Bad Vibes. I recommend them both. Mala Onda represents the new voice of Chilean writers, and of kids all over the world growing up amidst drugs, malls, boredom, etc. This book certainly tells a different story of Pinochet than all the history books I've read on the seventies and eighties in Chile.

When will more of Fuguet's novels be translated into English?

5-0 out of 5 stars great
