Product Description
Werner's compendium of Chinese mythology, inimitably described by the author himself as a "Who's Who of the Chinese Otherworld," has been a choice collector's item for many years. It was originally published in 1932 with the illustrious imprint of Kelly and Walsh of Shanghai. But like many another notable work in the field of Chinese studies brought out by this famous publishing house, Werner's volume has long been unavailable to numerous would-be readers and purchasers.

This stupendous work required nearly a half-century to compile, traces the major myths, superstitions, and beliefs that are found in Eastern literature, art and customs. Explains how the God of Happiness had his origin in an emperor's liking for dwarts...why Chinese children wear a cord around their necks...what incense means in the temple...and other fascinating aspects of Oriental imagination. In addition to Dr. Werner's witty and informative introduction, the book contains a special section on the pronunciation of Chinese words, a table of Chinese dynasties, and a bibliography. Alphabetically indexed, and cross-referenced.

E.T.C. Werner was painstakingly precise in his own work and acidly intolerant of shoddy scholarship. He demanded the maintenance of the highest academic standars. Catholic in his interests and richly imaginative and reflective, he was an omnivorous but discriminating reader as well as an eagle-eyed observer of the dramas of passing life. Scholars cannot but be impressed by the measured beauty of his English phrases. His Dictionary of Chinese Mythology is a work of literary art. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Distills the poetic wisdom of the ages into a lifeless list of bland exortations.

There are books available which do preserve and present the beauty of oriental thought, but I am afraid this is not one of them.

Try the book by Guy Zona, instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars Yet another book of proverbs
Disappointingly banal. This book reads as if it were written by a chinese-speaking lawyer. Verdict: don't waste your money.

2-0 out of 5 stars It is not a easy to use dictionary.
This book comprises of proverbs and vernaculars. Some phrases are regional. The proverbs were organized based on their Mandarin Pin-yin pronounciation. However, for those who do not know Chinese writing orpin-yin, this book is not quite helpful if you just want to understandChinese proverbs. However, if you know Chinese and Mandarin pin-yin, youwill find this book somewhat helpful. Also, the English index helps.

Asfor me, who know how to read some Chinese (and do not know pin-yin), butwould like to know the definitions of some proverbs, I find it difficult tolook through the Chinese characters written in the back in orderto find aproverb. Therefore, if the characters were typed and organized by strokes, that would be more helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nicely done. Well Organized.
Comprehensive and useful book for mastering great phrases and sayings. I appreciated the characters being written in the back and the GREAT indexing (both English and Chinese). It would have been nice to have tone marks overthe Pinyin, but the characters make up for it. ... Read more

Grounded in a historical context that spans events of more than a century - World War II, McCarthyism, Civil Rights, the Women's movement - this volume: Uses oral history to show how families rely upon myth and legend as they adjust to a new culture. Illustrates how strong cultural and intergenerational bonds can both support and oppress Chinese American families; Uses Asian mythology and symbols to understand the psyche of Chinese Americans and their immigration experience, illustrating the contrasting world views of Asian and Western culture. 5-0 out of 5 stars An eye-opening examination
Written by a female Chinese-American psychologist with over 30 years of experience in mental health services, Learning From My Mother's Voice: Family Legend And The Chinese American Experience is both a cathartic memoir and a strong testimony of the experience of immigrant Chinese-Americans and their families throughout history, yet particularly in the past half-century. Chapters discuss common Western myths perpetuated about Chinese men and women, including infamous movies and characters that deified white men and repeatedly reduced Chinese women to the roles of victims or whores, the role of storytelling in helping families adjust to difficult situations, cultural symbols and universal bonds, the daily experience of Chinese-American family life, and more. Particularly examining the life of her mother, the author applies the cultural lessons learned from studying her mother's life to better understand life as a Chinese-American. An eye-opening examination that will prove extremely revealing for anyone seeking to better understand the psychodynamic and cultural forces behind the Chinese-American family, and especially recommended reading for anyone who career or daily life takes them into contact with Chinese-American communities.

Product Description
One Quarter of HumanityMalthusian Mythology and Chinese RealitiesJames Z. Lee and Wang FengThis book presents evidence about historical and contemporary Chinese population behavior that overturns much of the received wisdom about the differences between China and the West first voiced by Malthus. Malthus described a China in which early and universal marriage ensured high fertility and therefore high mortality. He contrasted this with Western Europe, where marriage was late and far from universal, resulting in lower fertility and higher demographic responsiveness to economic circumstances. The result in China was thought to be mass misery as part of the population teetered on the brink of a Malthusian precipice, whereas in the West conditions were less severe. In reality, James Lee and Wang Feng argue, there has been effective regulation of population growth in China through a variety of practices that depressed marital fertility to levels far below European standards, and through the widespread practices of infanticide and abortion. Moreover, in China population behavior has long been primarily a consequence of collective intervention. This collective culture underlies four distinctive features of the Chinese demographic pattern--high rates of female infanticide, low rates of male marriage, low rates of marital fertility, and high rates of adoption--that Lee and Wang trace from 1700 to today. These and other distinctive features of the Chinese demographic and social system, they argue, led to a different demographic transition in China from the one that took place in the West.James Lee is Associate Professor of History at the California Institute of Technology. Wang Feng is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of California at Irvine.October 61/8 x 91/4 29 line illus., 1 map, 16 tables 288 pp. ... Read more

Stephen Field gives us a wonderfull translation of this old Chinese text. It seems to me, that he always find the right words to express the depth behind the Chinese signs.

3-0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING, BUT...
This book was interesting, but lacked practical insight into personal interface with Kwan Yin.Good for a more "academic", objective look as this boddhisattva, but not for those who are looking for intimate insights.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of hisorical facts and interesting poems.
This book gives much historical information in a short space. It also contains the 100 divination poems. The beginning is a bit dry but all in all a good book. The only thing I was hoping to find and did not was morestories about people who had had special or miraculous occurances that theyattribute to her.

5-0 out of 5 stars revelations of kuan yin told by close friends.
i was not a devotee for kuan yin.but after reading this book,i realised that there are indeed miracles associated with kuan yin, which came to my mind after reading this book.similar to one of the book's account of anexample of kuan yin revelation,i had also a true account of kuan yin's helpgiven to my mom's neighbour.a neighbour of ours happens to go out to attendsome urgent things while forgeting to switch off the gas stove.a firestarted and i was quite big.fortunately my neighbour who was told about thefire started to ask kuan yin for help.strangely enough, the fire suddenlyextinguished by itself without anyone trying to put it off.it was witnessby my mom and some friends who were desperately trying to open the lockeddoor.finally when the door was opened,my mon saw a statue of kuan yin atthe kitchen, still intact, serene and untouched by the fire.such was thestrange things that kuan yin has always help people who ask her forhelp.maybe ,the author would like to find out more about kuan yin'srevelations by asking among kuan yin's devotees in china, taiwan hk or southeast asia in the future.thanks
