5-0 out of 5 stars On the Money!
The book, "The Chiropractic Theories," by Robert A. Leach, is an important source and reference work. Many today do not realize that chiropractic is based on solid neurological principles, research and clinical practice. The subluxation (or "subluxation complex"), despite the complaints of detractors, absolutely exists. Not always detectable on radiographs (x-ray films), it can be diagnostically noted by the various changes observed or palpated at a given spinal level.Changes such as temperature rise, decreased range of motion (R.O.M.), muscle spasm unilaterally with muscle stretch contralaterally, and by the presence of trigger points.Typically, the affected vertebra will move much more easily in one direction of rotation, than in the opposite direction. In the latter, it will feel "locked" against movement, and the patient will feel an increase in pain upon both active and passive movement in the former direction. The pain can range from mild to severe, depending on the degree of subluxation, and on the number of spinal levels involved. Most all of us have experienced an awful "wry neck," in which two or more cervical vertebrae are subluxated in the same direction.

When a correction is applied, in the form of spinal manipulation (chiropractic adjustment), this unilateral locking effect is disrupted, and we see a return to normal structural and physiological integrity of that level, and pain abates.Incidentally, the chiropractic subluxation is roughly equivalent to the osteopathic "spinal lesion," and we hear very little about how this lesion does not exist, or has been insufficiently researched and documented.Of course, today, most osteopathic doctors just practice regular medicine.

This book examines some of the problems with nomenclature and definition of the subluxation, then goes to on to comprehensively, even elegantly, lay out the various theories that have been proposed through the history ofchiropractic.Much detail here, and the intelligent reader can readily see that there is more going on here than the old idea of a vertebra pressing on a nerve like a foot pressing on a garden hose. This book is a gem, and a real joy to peruse or study. In my view, it should be on the bookshelf of all alternative practitioners--and certainly on those belonging to "bodyworker" practitioners, such as massage therapists, rolfers, reichian therapists and acupunturists.

Note:The Second Edition, oddly enough, is superior to the Third (and probably succeeding editions). These editions have eliminated much of the best content of the second, are somewhat apologetic in tone, and focus more on areas for future research, than on chiropractic theories.Finding that my copy (Second Edition) had gone missing, I ordered a copy of the Third Edition..and found that I was very disappointed, when I received it.Within a week, I ordered a copy of the Second, and when it arrived, felt as though I had recovered an old friend. ; )

Note:"Foundations of Chiropractic Subluxation," by Gatterman is excellent too. ... Read more

Now updated in its 2nd edition, the first research-based book on this topic examines the direct link between joint dysfunction, the theories of its effects, and the clinical syndromes seen in clinical practice. Scientific evidence is presented for indications and contraindications of subluxation, along with term definitions, basic science and anatomy, subluxation causes, radiographic evidence, manipulable and nonmanipulable subluxation, a theoretical model, and subluxation syndromes. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good desk reference
This book is good to help you distinguish the differences between common conditions. It also gives a good over all management plan to help guide your patients for rehab and getting better.

3-0 out of 5 stars instant access to chiropractic guidelines and protocols
This small paperbound book provides a basic overview of several spinal, extremity, and general health conditions in a self-described "at-a-glance" format. Each section includes information regarding definition, etiology, principle symptoms, exam findings, lab & radiographic findings, and management guidelines. The book does provide some helpful information, but in most cases lacks appropriate detail.Clinicians looking for a text that provides detailed etiologic, diagnostic, and management data will not be adequately informed by this text.Frankly, a few chapters are quite helpful. For example, the chapters (2) dealing with fibromyalgia are some of the best I've yet read on this condition, providing important and clinically useful descriptions of the condition and (most importantly) a detailed list and description of other conditions which need to be considered during patient work-up.But most sections are insufficiently detailed for proper diagnosis and management -- the data in these chapters is introductory at best.Chapters on scoliosis, adhesive capsulitis, ligamentous injuries of the knee, cervical soft tissue injuries, etc., do not thoroughly cover these subjects. What IS provided in most chapters is an overview -- helpful perhaps for someone already versed in the details of these conditions, but inadequate as a primary guide.Neither would this book provide adequate preparatory material for a challenging (such as an oral) board exam.In my professional opinion, this book makes some good contributions, but does not replace more detailed reference texts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get this book!
This book will be beneficial to any chiropractic practice. It offers a very good overview of common conditions encountered in chiropractic practice. The layout is orderly and to the point. Especially helpful are the nutritional protocols. I highly recommend this to practitioners and students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Pocket Review for Chiropractic Boards
I used this to study for my Part II, Part III and Part IV Boards as a reference to quick facts and treatment protocols. The condition was explained with specifity and then giving treatment protocol like adjustments, vitamin supplements and specific exercises. If you want to know how the boards will you ask you questions, get the following:

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" book for natural medicine doctors and students
Drs. David Brady and Lew Huff have done a truly excellent job of overviewing and synopsizing many of the common conditions that doctors of chiropractic(DC) have been treating effectively for many decades. The "Instant Access" design of this book makes it very user friendly and desireable in both a busy office setting and for home study. The addition of nutritional protocols and appropriate laboratory assesments for the conditions covered make this comprehensive book a "must have" book for both new and seasoned doctors and for students of natural medicine whether they be DCs, NDs, DOs, or MDs. Non-professionals interested in making sure they are receiving the most comprehensive care possible will also derive tremendous value from owning and reading this book. 5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable reference tool

Thebookcovers clearly and succinctly an ambitious range of topics, including cash flow management, marketing, essential clinic function, personnel management, etc. Dr. Delman did a remarkable job of exploring each topic with sufficient detail and meaningful examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Concentrated Business Kit for Chiropractors
This book is powerful... On the contrary of many other books or seminars, it doesn't take 1 good idea and make a huge business around it, every chapter is concise, to the point, with a great generousity in the topics covered and the advice given.
Also, I recommend the website www.businessofchiropractic.com for its great additional content, also available at a reasonable price.
So whether you've been a practice for a while or you're just starting out, please take practice & management seminars, hire a coaching company and read other books, we never have too much info, but this book is a must have... more than that it's a must READ!

4-0 out of 5 stars No Bones about it
This is the book, more than any other, that helped me set up my practice. It contains practical information about how to get new customers after opening the doors, not to mention how to advertise without being crass. If I'd bought it earlier, I would have been even more successful. Even though it says "after startup," I think reading it before startup is good.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best advice straight from the greater trochanter
I experienced Dr. Delman's knowledge and skill in chiropractic and practice management as a patient many years before following in his footsteps. When I saw that he had written a guide book for the rest of us, I was thrilled. I own both the first and second editions. Dr. Delman explains the "how-to's" of a successful practice in a concise, understandable and enjoyable format. This is a must for any DC at any stage!

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Outstanding
I often shake my head in disbelief to think that many of my fellow chiropractors will shell out thousands of dollars in practice management seminars when a book such as this exists for a fraction of the cost, and in truth, is much better.

Ivan Delman has managed to take important universal truths of business success and apply it to chiropractic in a simple but powerful way. Passion, wisdom, humor, and compassion are the hallmarks of his writing style that walks you through essential steps in creating the practice of your dreams.

Just as in chiropractic we tell our patients to please try chiropractic first before doing expensive, needless surgery, I suggest that D.C.'s read this gem of a book first before attending an expensive seminar.

You won't be sorry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Are you building a practice or your overhead?
Ask yourself: is my billing performance measurable, consistent, and scalable? Am I working to improve them or am I spending all my time chasing individual denials and arguing with insurance companies? Am I working 'on' the business or 'in' the business?

Billing, because of its complexity, creates opportunities for providers to commit fraud and for payers--to benefit at the expense of providers. But the playing field is uneven: the insurance companies are armed with a powerful three-pronged system to keep providers' money: solid business strategy, well-documented and professionally managed processes, and leading-edge technology.

Without an equally powerful methodology, how can you succeed? An in-house billing operation and a naive outsourced billing office owner are often helpless against the payers. Just like patients who lack education about their own body and their nervous system, practice owners are often ignorant about the reasons for their underpayment or for the lack of practice growth. A systemic office 'subluxation' may not be immediately observable to a naked and untrained eye, yet it may cause major setbacks for the practice owner.

Lirov's Practicing Profitability outlines such a methodology. It's the first book to systematically approach billing from the payer-provider conflict perspective and to apply the 'network effect'--the most revolutionary characteristic of Internet technology. It emphasizes the importance of integrated office workflow and it sharpens business focus. This book shows how focus and teamwork can be turned around systemically from being points of vulnerability to the strongest weapon for improving practice profitability.

Read it and accelerate your practice building.

2-0 out of 5 stars Agree with "Not That Useful."
The book was a quick and easy read.I am a physical therapist operating 5 privately owned clinics.I was hoping to find a resource to improve the efficiency of our billing and collections processes, but this was not it.This book provides a basic description of what technology can and should do to assist a practice operate more effectively, but there are no real world answers.I read it, but then was happy to resell it.Not a resource worth keeping.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended reading
Providers face complex billing problems in the stacked marketplace
that payers have created with their leading edge into large-scale
systems. In this cogent work, the author has integrated many
distributed systems concepts (e.g., Straight Through Processing,
Business Process Interoperability, Software as a Service, Network
effects, etc.) in ways that offer a practical process innovation to
address the cumbersome and risk-prone billing processes inherent in
the field of medical practice management. This book not only describes
an elegant software solution - the author also brings to life the
nature of these underlying problems from the multiple perspectives
that help readers to understand as if they were given a tour through
the system by a resident expert.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entrepreneurial perspective of the medical billing process
Most billing services stall because the founders start a business without the necessary skills, methodology, or technology to run a scalable business. They quickly discover that managing a growing business requires different skills than familiarity of billing or great fun at coding.Medical billing business is especially difficult because it must succeed in an adversarial business environment, where providers may overcharge the payers and payers may underpay the providers.

Practicing Profitability is a pragmatic look at the complex medical billing process from entrepreneurial perspective. It is also a first-hand personal account of a pioneering development of a powerful system to run a solid and scalable medical billing business, including professionally managed processes, leading-edge technology, and outsourced and off-shored personnel. If you plan to build a medical billing business or if you have already built one but you don't know how to improve its profitability or scale it up - buy this book and keep it close for frequent reference.

While chiropractic can provide quality treatment for certain types of back and neck pains and related problems, many health-industry professionals and patients are under the impression that the practice can be used as a method for restoring and maintaining overall health. "Inside Chiropractic" is a clearly presented, practical guide that explores the facts and falsehoods of chiropractic from the view of a doctor with more than forty years of experience in the field-a noted authority on the safe use of chiropractic to treat physical pain. Dr Samuel Homola unleashes a startling critique of the well-established belief that chiropractic can treat infection and disease. Citing the shaky opinions and anecdotal evidence that support chiropractic treatments for a wide range of illnesses, Dr Homola states, 'Many chiropractors believe that correction of mis-aligned vertebrae can restore health and that regular spinal adjustments are essential for maintaining health. There is no definitive, scientific evidence to support such a theory.'"Inside Chiropractic" provides essential information to consumers, physicians, insurance carriers, and all concerned with the field on the origins of chiropractic, doctor education, choosing a good chiropractor, 'sense and nonsense' in the practice, alternative healing, problems and questions that remain in chiropractic, and more. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Just to give you an idea of who this book is coming from...the "chiropractic" author has aligned himself with a supposed "psychiatrist":)

Here are some details from a legal trial that this "Psychiatrist" lost recently

At trial, under a heated cross-examination by Negrete, Barrett (the "psychiatrist") conceded that he was not a Medical Board Certified psychiatrist because he had failed the certification exam. This was a major revelation since Barrett had provided supposed "expert testimony" as a psychiatrist and had testified in numerous court cases as such. Also, Barrett had said that he was a "legal expert" even though he had no formal legal training.

The most damning testimony before the jury, under the intense cross-examination by Negrete, was that Barrett had filed similar defamation lawsuits against almost 40 people across the country within the past few years and had not won one single one at trial.During the course of his examination, Barrett also had to concede his ties to the AMA, Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Why a "chiropractor" would team up with a "psychiatrist" of this level really makes me question the validity of anything written in this book.

My suggestion if you have a copy is to use it as toilet paper:) then at least it will be useful in some way:)

2-0 out of 5 stars Mark Train was right
Mark Twain once warned about reading medical books, that one can die from a misprint.Had he encounter someone like Barrett, he might have issued this warning: be careful of quack-busters,you can die from terminal misinformation.

5-0 out of 5 stars the truth hurts...
This book is a must read. The fact that this book has caused so many other reviewers to respond with short and harsh replies questioning the motives of Dr. Homola is evidence that so many of the public are blinded by the lies of the majority of the chiropractic profession.I suppose I would be offended too if I had been taken in by this profession. There are many cases where spinal manipulation is appropriate but it is never beneficial as a lifelong treatment.Thank you Dr. Homola for dedicating yourself to giving back some credibility to a profession that has its small niche in medicine but has somehow been corrupted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Chiropractic based on experience not heresy
It is amazing that someone could be published with so little proven group study and with such outdated information. I have experienced the wonderful effects of corrective chiropractic treatment and am a believer due to personal experience. Cervical manipulations on my severely damaged cervical spine caused rapid recovery of hearing, vision and speech. Although I am now in a maintenance period I still believe that my chiropractic adjustments are what keep me running - I choose to be well and not base my health on SYMPTOMS which are mainly misleading. How many people do you know that have dropped dead due to a sudden heart attack, rare cancer, a stroke and never had one warning sign or symptom? What a load of bosh this book is and I feel I actually got stupider reading it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Here is the deal with this book...
Like anything else, extremism is hardly ever good. Straight chiropractors are extreme, and Homola makes valid points when blasting them. Homola feels that chiropractors should deal strictly with musculoskelatal problems.

Chiropractors can do some good for back pain. But understand that there is too much of a supply of chiropractors for the demand for basic back pain, so what they do to get business (and keep you coming in) can be unethical.

I was going to go to chiropractic school before reading this book, but opted for med school. There is really only 2 good schools for chiropractors, that teach science based chiropractic. He points this out well in his book.

If you want know the signs of a good, ethical chiropractor, read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Indeed
Strang was a genius anatomist whom, it was said, memorised Grays Anatomy text. In the board exam, he was failed as he was though to have cheated by quoting copious sections of the book verbatim.

He was later a masterly philospher, introducing such concepts as The Division of Physical Morality that would govern all health care decisions in society. Who would be at the gate-keeper's role in this departement? Why, a philosopher, of course. NOT a physician of any kind.

This is essential reading for any student of chiropractic. Ignore it at your won peril.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book by a wonderful man
Dr. Virgil Strang was a wonderful man who devoted 50 years of his life to chiropractic. As an employee of Palmer College of Chiropractic during the last four years of his life, I am proud to say I was able to hear him speakon the value of chiropractic in people's lives. He had a way with words anda passion for chiropractic that was contagious. This is a fantastic book onan area of health care whose time has come. Everyone should read this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding work!
This is an outstanding work, with contributions from many distinguished clinicians. It is a "must" for every chiropractor's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most worthwhile for all Chiropractors to read.
Claudia A. Anrig and Gregory Plaugher have made use of their inherent capabilities to put together such a worthwhile book for the ChiropracticProfession and other Health Care Providers.

This book was written withthe intention of helping provide quality Chiropractic care for children. Itis not intended to substitute the Medical Paediatritian, but rather tocarefully illustrate that the Chiropractor is an appropriate and necessaryprovider of health care for children.

This books content has been wellreferenced andthe diagrams are easy to follow. The layout is tasteful andallows for easy comprehension.

Most importantly, this book was written toinform practitioners that Chiropractic is safe, effective and natural forthe paediatric patient.

Well done! ... Read more

Product Description
The second edition of the Handbook of Clinical Chiropractic Care is a concise, quick-access handbook that covers the more common conditions seen in a chiropractic practice. Where possible, an evidence-based approach is presented, but it must be understood that a purely evidence-based practice is impossible to achieve in any form of health care. Instead the clinician must use the best available evidence, clinical experience and a "pinch" of intuition to manage his/her patients.

This is a handy reference that provides a library of practical information in a single volume! When you need fast, up-to-date information on specific treatment techniques such as orthopedic testing and contraindications for manipulation, or information to assist in analyzing test results, this is the first place to turn. Absolutely packed with charts, tables, and algorithms for quick reference. ... Read more
