Product Description
Disease and Civilization explores the scientific and political ramifications of the great cholera epidemic of 1832, showing how its course and its conceptualization were affected by the social power relations of the time. The epidemic which claimed the lives of 18,000 people in Paris alone, was a watershed in the history of medicine: In France, it shook the complacency of a medical establishment that thought it had the means to prevent any onslaught and led to a revolution in the concept of public health.

Francois Delaporte teaches at the Universidad Autonoma de Mexico. ... Read more

Vibrio cholerae, the causative organism of the disease Cholera, colonizes the small intestine and produces several different toxins among which the enterotoxin, or more widely known as cholera toxin (CT), happens to be the major virulence determinant that is responsible for the diarrheal syndrome. This book provides for the first time comprehensive and up-to-date information about all the toxins of Vibrio cholerae, their physical and chemical structures, their biosynthesis and its genetic regulation, their physiology, the molecular biology of their interactions with the host as well as their role in the development of an appropriate and effective cholera vaccine. 5-0 out of 5 stars Know the fundamentals
Marketing in the Time of Cholera was a great read! Kind of like getting 7 strategy books in one.No-nonsense. Direct and to the point. For those who want a fundamentals-based, strategic overview with tons of tactical tips. Some great gems in here if you read with that in mind.I find most business books give you one concept and then talk about it for the next 100 pages. But MITTOC zips you through 6.5 fundamentals and gives you a different way to view them. It's an easy read and very beneficial for anyone trying to get more out of their marketing team (and who isn't?). Love the title. Love the humor. Left me wanting more.

Product Description
Cholera terrified and fascinated nineteenth-century Europeans more than any other modern disease. Its symptoms were gruesome, its sources were mysterious, and it tended to strike poor neighborhoods hardest. In this insightful cultural history, Catherine Kudlick explores the dynamics of class relations through an investigation of the responses to two cholera epidemics in Paris. While Paris climbed toward the height of its urban and industrial growth, two outbreaks of the disease ravaged the capital, one in 1832, the other in 1849. Despite the similarity of the epidemics, the first outbreak was met with general frenzy and far greater attention in the press, popular literature and personal accounts, while the second was greeted with relative silence. Finding no compelling evidence for improved medical knowledge, changes in the Paris environment, or desensitization of Parisians, Kudlick looks to the evolution of the French revolutionary tradition and the emergence of the Parisian bourgeoisie for answers. ... Product Description
Cholera, which is caused by pathogenic strains of Vibrio cholerae, continues to threaten public health and socio-economic development in many developing countries, particularly those that lack access to potable water and adequate sanitation. The emergence of new V. cholerae strains and the severity of recent cholera outbreaks that began in August 2008 in Zimbabwe, coupled with climate change and elevated antimicrobial resistance, highlighted the dynamics of cholera. For these reasons, cholera was placed at the forefront of world public health agenda. This book discusses the recent cholera outbreaks in Africa, with particular emphasis on the causes, epidemiology, virulence factors, diagnosis, treatment and possible methods of curbing V. cholerae-induced epidemics in the future. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Cholera," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Cholera in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Cholera when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Cholera, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
