Product Description
In this poetry collection H. C. Kim captures a fragment of the human experience of the past year.Americans in particular may identify with the poems capturing the hurt and reaction to the September 11th tragedy.Politically reflective poems encourage thinking and discussion about complex issues surrounding the event and the response.

There are other poems that suit the tastes of those who love to travel. These poems reflect on visits to various Europeans cities and bring out what is special about these cities in a personal way.For those who adore love poemsSome of the poems in this volume focus on the concept of distant love.As the global community becomes smaller and smaller due to travel and the internet, more and more people are falling in love with people who are “far away.”It is for their benefit that the poet has written these poems. Some might want to share these poems with the ones they love.

Here is a stanza from the poem, Within Reach:

How could you say that I donÂ’t know you?
We have shared our innermost thoughts
Soul to soul
Have we communicated
Even transcending prosaic prose ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Moving
This book of poems is powerful and moving because it combines emotional themes -- like love and 9/11.I purchased this book because of the new movie that's coming out on 9/11.I had forgotten how I felt after 9/11.This book brought memories of my feelings back.I like the fact that the poet combined poems of love with poems of reflection about 9/11.That's like life. It's never monolithic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Poems
I found the poems in this book absolutely fabulous!I read these poems everywhere -- when I am sitting on my favorite bench in the park, when I am taking my bath and have candles lit with a glass of red wine, everywhere.I highly recommend these poems -- absolutely fabulous!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Gave Me Courage
This book gave me courage.I was about to break off my relationship with my boyfriend because he was going back to Europe after 1 year of studies at my university. After reading this book, I believed that long-distance is possible. We are going strong even as I write this!

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped My Long Distance Relationship
I actually used some of the poems in this book to save my long-distance relationship.I am no poet, although I should be, being Italian. But there is no reason to write my own poems, when I can use these poems by Mr. Kim.I am no liar so I told my girlfriend afterwards they weren't my poems. Thanks to Mr. Kim for coming through for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful Poems
I like Kim as a poet and try to read all of his poems.I found this book of poems to be very powerful -- perhaps because of the subject matter. He deals with terrorism and 9/11 and I found myself moved by them. ... Read more

The ancient Chinese regarded the written word as a transformative force able to move heaven and earth and unite the reader with the source of all things, the Tao. The power of writing, especially poetry, is celebrated here in four short texts that present both practical instruction and spiritual insight. 10 b&w calligraphies.Amazon.com Review
"Use very straight speech/ without design orcalculation." Advice modern day politicos would find impossibleto follow, but a good adage for writers needing a reminder to keepthings simple and clear. Such tips are scattered throughout TheArt of Writing, a collection of ancient Chinese musings on thewriter's art, filled with Taoist clarity and sly humor. "Observecreation without taboos. Swallow a vast wilderness and spit it outagain." That's a whole book on writing right there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Take it as Chinese Philosophy, not as a How-to Guide
It gives deep insight into ancient Chinese culture. I don't think it's intended to be taken as a writer's guide for today. I thought the poems themselves were lovely, but this subject (ancient Chinese poetry) is definitely is an acquired taste. Aside from that, this little book is put together very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'd use it as an example...
Would I use this book in a poetry workshop to guide people on how to learn to write a list poem, for instance? NO!I would use it as an example to show as to what the Chinese masters thought of writing and how they approached the writing process.
Was the first reviewer on crack when he wrote the review?

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book of Aphorisms about Writing!
I guess that other reviewer didn't bother to read the title of the book before he bought it.So you buy a book that says it's about what Chinese writers have to say about poetry and are disappointed that it's not a manual on how to write poetry in English? There are plenty of those out there. This book is unusual and fascinating, a luminous collection of Chinese wisdom about the art of the poem.In fact, I think it would be very helpfult to someone who writes poetry and wants to know what the great Chinese poets value in literature and esthetics. It's funny, witty, charming, and like nothing else out there.A fantastic book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I hadn't bought this book
If you're looking for instruction on writing poetry I suggest that you stop looking and start writing. The only instruction I've had on writing poetry was while taking an introductory writing course in college. I leftthat class with many questions, the main one being: "What ispoetry?" I wasn't necessarily looking for a direct answer, butnonetheless wanted something concrete to go with. I have since taken anoccasional stab at it and have come to realize how futile it is to try andanswer such a question. When I have been lucky enough to write a successfulpoem there is no way of explaining how I did it, I just knew that it wasright. This book attempts to give some guidance on the art of writing(mainly poetry), when really it should be titled, "Writer'sreflections on writing" as most of the so-called teachings are justrecounts of the process itself or a product thereof. Some people may arguethat this may be of value, however they are wrong. If you've never tastedsalt and you want to know what it tastes like, don't ask somebody what ittastes like- taste it yourself! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From Crayon To Quill
When I first rented this book from the home-school library a few years ago, I didn't have a clue . . . though in my own eyes I was an upcoming novelist on the same level as Jane Austin. (Finding a wealth of knowlegde has a way of revealing to us how little we actually knew.) This book taught me about developing charactors, creating a plot, revising, playing on people's emotions, realting truths of God's word in a natural way, and, most of all, foreshadowing. Good examples of foreshadowing are found in all quality literature, and this single aspect seperates the good writers from those who are truely great. After discovering these literary tactics, I began to read novels not so much for enjoyment as for study; to see how they were applied by good writers, and fubbed up by mediocres. One thing which distresses me about modern reading material is the watered downess of the gospel message. Having God in your heart is all good and fine, but people need to know what that means. Let us not be afraid to offend others by speaking of the Lord. Let us not feel that his pressense in our writing is intrusive. Let us be free to do good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learning how to write like a theologian--a guide
The book is an excellent guidebook for exploring how to write and think theologically. As a professional writer, I still found the transition to writing and thinking theology daunting. After many months and years of being told to think and write in theological concepts, without success, I found this book and her guides to doing both. She guides the reader/writer in that pilgrimage to becoming a writer of theology. I say a pilgrimage for, although we look ahead at the destination of being more accomplished, she allows the writer/reader to see progress and the evolution from novice to increasingly more accomplished in status. When I first began using the book, it took me days to write a reflection paper, an essay, or a research paper. But she gave me the confidence and tools to do so with greater ease and confidence. Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars great service
I bought this for a minister who doesn't have Internet access. She couldn't find this at any bookstore in town.Arrived quickly and in great shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic, clear, and helpful guide.
I have been a writing teacher for almost 15 years, so I was happy to see how clear and helpful this guide is. It describes the different kinds of writing theology students/seminarians need to do: reflections, theological arguments and theological research, biblical exegisis/arguments and biblical research. There are writing exercises for each section and lots of footnotes so that you can find other writers who are working on the same issues. Well worth the cost. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Finding God's Wisdom in our Lives
All a person has to do is look at the best seller list, walk into a bookstore, or see the current crop of books offered by Amazon.com too see that memoirs are very popular. Though many would technically be in the category of autobiography, this is not always the best fit because in many cases these books focus on afew specific memories rather than an entire life, and often offer a lesson learned from the experience, that I suppose could put many of these books in a self help category as well.

For people who are reading these memoirs from a spiritual point of view, Peter Gilmour's THE WISDOM OF MEMOIR is very helpful. The book helps a reader see God at work in people's lives. While some of the memoirs Gilmour highlights are religious or spiritual in nature, others are not. Gilmour gives many of these works an added dimension by looking at them from a religious point of view. By looking at these spiritual aspects of religious and non-religious biography and memoir, we can apply and see these things in our won lives. While the book does not specifically talk about writing a memoir the way a writing book may, it does offer advice for people who keep journals as a spiritual practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars learning about our past puts life into perspective
from Praying, no.81, p. 31: "Peter Gilmour has written an importantbook. As we near the end of the twentieth century we look around us, andeverywhere we see shattered institutions, families, communities andindividual souls. Only contact with the sacred and holy can motivate us togo out into our neighborhoods, our society and our world and begin thenecessary repairs and healing. When we find the holy breath and spirit ofGod in our own daily life and living then there is real hope for dynamismand transcendence." ... Read more

Product Description
"Dr. Bah has written an immensely valuable reference book for Muslim scholars active in research and writing. He wisely did not attempt to write a comprehensive writing guide; there is already a plethora of such books at the writer's disposal. Instead, he concentrated on the most common errors that academic writers make, and fused this information with comments on Muslim research and writing in particular. The result is a useful resource for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. His use of examples of both correct and incorrect writing is especially skillful; the examples are only as complex as necessary to illustrate the point and not more, thus making it much simpler for the reader to follow and learn."

Product Description
In this book some 25 scholars focus on the relationship between religion, children's literature and modernity in Western Europe since the Enlightenment (c. 1750). They examine various aspects of the phenomenon of children's literature, such as types of texts, age of readers, position of authors, design and illustration. The role of religion in giving meaning both in a substantive sense as well as through the institutionalised churches is studied from an interdenominational point of view (Judaism, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism and Anglicanism). Finally, the contribution of pedagogy and child psychology in the interaction between modernity, religion and children's literature is also discussed.

Various articles give a broad overview of the tensions between aesthetics and ethics and the demand for cultural autonomy in the development of children's literature. Children's bibles and missionary stories played an important part in the growing diversification of children's literature, as did the publication of illustrated reviews for children. Remarkable differences are highlighted in the involvement of religious societies and institutions, episcopally approved publishing houses and supervisory bodies in the publication, distribution and supervision of children's literature. This volume adopts a comparative approach in exploring the underlying religious, ideological and cultural dimensions of children's literature in modern society. ... Read more
