5-0 out of 5 stars Great craft books
175 Easy-To-Do Christmas Crafts I work in a day services program at a sheltered workshop for disabled adults.A large part of our program is doing crafts with the clients. These books (I have several, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Easter)are full of easy to do crafts using simple supplies that are easily found.I keep these books at work and all my co-workers love and use these books.Out of all the craft books I have brought to work, these are the ones that are used the most.I highly recommend these books to both the crafty and uncrafty alike.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Crafts
The crafts in this book are great. There are so many projects in this book that everyone is bound to find one they like. Some are so simple that they are almost ridiculus. Even if you do not think you are a crafty person you will find a craft you can do in this book. As a pre-school teacher I have used various crafts in this book as patterns for larger or more detailed class projects. This is a great buy at a good price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Suitable for kids at age 5-7 years old
This Book is suitable for Christmas. It explains step-by-step project and kids will love it. It's not too difficult to make it. Kids at age 5-7 years old will love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars very creative and lots of fun, ages 3-12 enjoyed crafts!!!
I run a daycare in Darlington WI and we loved this book. I found crafts that 3 year olds could do and crafts that my older kids could do to. I also purchased the Thanksgiving craft book. Both books are wonderful and wouldrecomend them to everyone, every age.The book uses usual household items soit is also cost effective. ... Read more

The crafts in this book are not all qucik projects that you can start in November or December. This book has great ideas, and we found several to make for holiday bazaars, but they did require time. We start in January on our Christmas crafting, and we were thrilled with some of the innovative ideas here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Retro-inspired country Christmas is a walk down memory lane...
"The Farm Chicks Christmas" by Serena Thompson is the follow-up to 2009's The Farm Chicks in the Kitchen: Live Well, Laugh Often, Cook Much. The first Farm Chicks book was a countrified cookbook peppered liberally with stories and reminiscences by Serena and Teri, antiques-inspired craft ideas (a reusable stencil was included in the front), and comfort food: easy recipes for breakfast treats, appetizers, soups and salads, and decadent desserts, over fifty in all.

"Farm Chicks Christmas," on the other hand, is written only by Serena, a contributing editor for Country Living magazine and antiques show hostess (her best friend Teri has retired from their business). The book still includes numerous country-inspired craft ideas; you'll find decorative, retro-inspired self-adhesive gift tags and notecards at the back, along with various decorating ideas for "the most wonderful time of the year." However, the ratio of crafts to recipes is reversed from the first book; there are only 17 recipes included at the back with gift-giving suggestions on how to package them.

"Farm Chicks Christmas" captures the magic of childhood Christmases, from family visits to the tree farm (complete with recipe ideas for hot drinks to tote along), holiday decorating ideas (holiday scalloped bunting, vintage-inspired snowball pompom ornaments, cone trees and vintage funnel trees, banners and more), and photos of Serena's friends' and family's homes decorated for Christmas.

Much of the book is more like a scrapbooked photo essay, with crafts sprinkled in every few pages. Also, the decorating tips (and included photos) are vintage country in the Farm Chicks fashion: displaying old farm toys standing in coconut snow, for example, or stacking metal funnels to make "trees." If you're not a fan of all things country, this probably isn't the holiday book for you.

The included holiday recipes are few, and aimed mostly at gift-giving, like the sweet and salty nuts, mini orange bundt cakes, and various types of cookies (butter cutouts, chocolate-covered peanut butter balls, snowballs, Spritz cookies). As with the previous book, a handy list of metric equivalent charts is provided at the back. I tried the sweet and salty nuts recipe first, and though tasty, I didn't think that the "sweet" flavor predominated; it was more of a subtle afterthought (there's only 1.5 tablespoons of brown sugar and 2 teaspoons of honey for 3 cups of nuts).

Overall, "Farm Chicks Christmas" is a nostalgic walk down a snowy memory lane, but it has narrower mass appeal than "Farm Chicks in the Kitchen" due to the reversal of the recipe-to-crafts ratio and the genre-specific decorating style (I enjoyed the many beautiful photographs, but won't find myself making yarn-ball wreaths or filling jars with spare Christmas lightbulbs anytime soon).

5-0 out of 5 stars Merry Ideas FOR SURE!!
In true Farm Chicks style, this book inspires new ideas, wonderful cooking and merriment of the best kind! I have been a Farm Chicks fan for as long as they have been around and ordered this volume a soon as it was available. It is a delight to thumb through and look at the gorgeous photographs and you will be truly in the mood for the holiday after you read it cover to cover as I did!!

It is filled with memories of Ms Thompson's past Christmases; yummy recipes for warming drinks and munchies, cookies,
mini bundt cakes and soooo much more! There are crafts to help decorate your cottage...Wrapping Paper Village; ways to use your collectibles to add to the holiday spirit:get out those vintage ice skates; tuck a small-size pair of red cowboy boots stuffed with winter greens into the corner of a book shelf; display your colorful baking supplies in glass jars on a kitchen shelf or counter....the reds, greens, and multi-color cookie decorations are pretty as well as functional!!

Just when you think you have seen it all, you turn the page and there are color recipe cards (make copies or use the originals to attach to those homemade goodies) plus 2 pages of sticker gift tags! Fun little extras!!

This is a wonderfully written book chock full of entertaining stories, and all the recipes and decorating ideas you need to make yours a merry holiday!!

3-0 out of 5 stars anticipation
I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of this new Farm Chicks book.Although it is a nice book, it does not compare to the first Farm Chicks book.It is more like what you might see on a blog.So although I'm not sad that I purchased it, had I seen it first I may not have done so. The first Farm Chicks book was far better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bring on the Fa La La - Farm Chick Style!
Christmas "Farm Chicks" style is just what I was hoping for this season.I am a big fan of Serena Thompson (previous book, site, products, blog, etc) so, of course I had her new publication, The Farm Chicks Christmas on pre-order the minute it was available.I was not disappointed in the least. The beautiful photography alone is worth the price of admission - but, never fear Ms. Thompson has given us many more "treats" to freshen our holiday plans.A few favs - the Pom Pom Ornaments (especially if you have super little ones and need non-breakable on your tree), and wrapping & shipping ideas (including Gift Card Holders & Wrapping Paper Village).

A few recipe highlights for me include - Marble Bread and the Mini Orange Bundt Cakes. No way to choose, so I'll be making both.

And, if all that doesn't seal the deal for you --- included is adorable color recipe cards (perfect to make copies and expand your collection or for gifts) and sticker gift tags.Love a free gift with purchase! This is a beautiful holiday book - full of lovely stories and collections. As a fan of the brand, The Farm Chicks know how to throw one heck of a holiday extravaganza!

Cheers!

3-0 out of 5 stars To Few Projects
I was really looking forward to this book but was disappointed. The pictures are nice, directions and patterns easy to follow but it is the same thing over and over. They are cute but it is a just a few projects with slight modifications done through out the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Snowmen & Christmas Critters
Love it! I love all of Tone Finnanger's books. I plan on making the snowmen and Christmas mice for gifts this coming Christmas. I just got the book a week ago, and I am going through my material stash to make some snowmen. I love all the different ways she uses the same patterns/themes - from applique to stuffed decorative dolls. Plus, the patterns are very basic, but the end project result is quite charming. I highly recommend this book for any sewer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Wonderful
I love this book. The projects are cute and the instructions are easy to follow. Some of the projects are a little too cute to be given to everyone. However, this book is a great addition to my other Tilda books. There are hearts and angels of course which seem to be a constant through the Tilda books but it's worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
I have not purchased this book yet but, I have it on loan from my local library. I have fallen in love with the adorable little projects inside of cute dolls, angels, and snowpeople... OH and the mouse family too. The gingerbread people, hearts, totes, and more are simply great ideas for gifts during these economic times. Thanks to the Author for such simple and great instructions. I plan on purchasing my own copy from Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lots of great ideas, but
This books has some wonderful Christmas craft ideas and it certainly is beautiful to look at, but the directions are minimal at best. It assumes you have a working knowledge of dollmaking and other crafts. Another frustrating aspect is that all the suggested brand name notions and fabrics used in this book can't be bought in this country. But if you are a knowledgable crafter you will be able to make sense of the directions and you certainly can find substitutes for the various notions and fabrics. Best of all, the price is right. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not the best way to spend your hard earned money
I ordered this book in hopes of finding something useful for my sons kindergarten classroom. Well the book gets 2 stars; one for each of the things in this book that are of value to me. First off for the price there are no real pictures of finished products, only drawings. Most everything in here is not out of the ordinary. The one thing we took exception to was the Christmas tree options, one suggestion was a ladder? Making a mix CD? Re-gifting??? There were your typical suggestions of homemade cards, candy, and cookies. If you dig deep on your paper craft knowledge, you really do not need this book. What I found of use was the suggestion of a homemade snow globe and painting our own pictures on canvas. Not a really good use of money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Save some money this year and still have a Merry Christmas
A Homemade Christmas: Creative Ideas for an Earth-Friendly, Frugal, Festive Holiday is full of ideas to have a lovely, thoughtful, homemade Christmas that won't break the bank. Written for adults, most of the projects are kid-friendly or easily adapted for children.

The book is divided into 5 chapters, each devoted to a different aspect of Christmas crafting. They include Greeting, Trimming, Cooking, Giving and Celebrating. Although there are no photos, there are plenty of illustrations that accompany well-written instructions for the projects. And while there are lots of Christmas crafting books available, the thing that makes this book stand out is the emphasis on using recycled or re-purposed materials. There are projects utilizing paint color chips, glass jars, tin cans, egg shells, old sweaters, galoshes, even twigs and branches from your yard.

Of course, there are many of the traditional suggestions like handmade gift certificates, instructions for a knitted cap, recipes for giftable foods, etc. But even those are time-tested and make welcome gifts.

If you are wanting to make this Christmas less about spending and more about enjoying and gifting in a personal and memorable way, this is a nice book to get you started. If you have kids, you'll be sure to find several great ideas to help them get in on the action.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth buying
The first thoughts that came to mind were: All of these ideas are either on line so why do I need a book to collect dust, and/or the ideas are very out-dated and were "exciting" 5 - 10 years ago.Still, there are a couple of interesting things that would be fun to try with the kids like the snow globes. But we would not buy this book.

Short, not so sweet review, but it's just not a very impressive book (and this review comes from a family of crafters and good cooks). ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just a bit thin on directions and weak on real world sensibilities.
`Christmas sweets & treats' is a `Better Homes and Gardens' collection of recipes and craft projects selected, I'm sure, from the pages of past `Better Homes and Gardens' Christmas issues.

I got off on the wrong foot with this book when I opened it to the first project which was for `minty topiaries' which involved gluing round peppermint candies and other edible candies to a plastic foam cone, thereby making them inedible. No matter how pretty they look, this adulterating of food simply rubbed me the wrong way, and while I have seen edible glues used, of course, on `Iron Chef America', there is no mention of such a product or option in this writing. Staying with this same project, one of the `supplies' is `Ornate silver candlestick holders'. My guess from the photograph of the finished product is that this little item can easily run to several dollars per unit, and the photograph suggests one per table setting.

This brings to mind the kind of project you can find in `Martha Stewart Living' and not `Better Homes and Gardens'. But my experience with `...Living' is that their instructions for projects are generally much more complete and their photographic spreads are better done.

The second craft project involves several very specialized materials, tools, and skills and since I am not an experienced craft person, I found the explanation of the techniques required to be just a bit sparse. They were akin to a cooking recipe's telling you to turn your mixture into quenelles. While I have never done this, I know I can run to my Jacques Pepin `Complete Techniques' to get the correct procedure. On the other hand, I have never used a sewing machine and the need for one will damp my spirits for this project.

A third objection I found with the craft projects is exemplified in the third project for `tussie-mussies' that create Christmas tree ornaments out of live `dainty fresh flowers'. My first concern is that while my Christmas tree is usually up for about six weeks, these decorations have practically no chance of lasting a week. And, the cost of such flowers in December at the average florist is likely to be pretty dear.

Since I know a lot more about cooking and baking than I do about craft projects, the baking recipes, mostly cookies were a lot less mysterious, but I had at least three objections to them. First, the book presents a few very ambitious projects for gingerbread constructions, yet the instructions for these are pretty thin. I know one could do a lot better with these since Rose Levy Beranbaum has done just that in her excellent book, `Rose's Christmas Cookies'. Another great source for Christmas cookie recipes is Dede Wilson's `A Baker's Field Guide to Christmas Cookies'.

My second objection to the recipes is that I know some of the recipes are not `best in breed'. For example, the snickerdoodle recipe here uses shortening, while my very best recipe uses butter plus a bit of corn syrup.

My third objection to the recipes is that some instructions do not follow genuine cooking practice. For example, one recipe calls for using a ¼ cup ice cream scoop, yet ice cream scoops are not rated by cup, but by what fraction of an ounce they scoop.

While there are many good things in this book, there are also many things that are half-baked, too expensive, or impractical. In place of this book, get one of the two cookie books I suggest, plus a good book on only Christmas crafts.

Mostly a cookbook. If you are looking for a decorating book, this may not be it.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's great!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A "Christmas Ribbonry" is a wonderful book. The ornaments are so different! The one that initially caught my eye was the galette on page 40.I ran out and bought ribbon to make it.It did take some time, butafter it was finished I had the most adorable little "cookie".The directions were very clear as were the illustrations. What a beautifulhouse where all the pictures were taken!

I can't wait to start onanother Christmas ornament. What's also nice is that there are ideas in itto create useful decorations throughout the year. For instance, you canmake covered boxes in pastels for Sringtime.

Thanks for making myholiday a little more special. I highly recommend this book and give itfive stars plus! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Get an early start on Christmas 2010
Here is a good book to get you started early on this year's Christmas gifts or to give your own house a new look for this Christmas season. From door banners to quilts to table toppers and, of course, the stockings for the mantel for Santa to fill, there is something everyone will want/need.

An extensive 11 page basics section will have you ready to appliqué, piece and assemble you quilted project. There are lots of color photos so you will know what the finished item will look like.

Each project begins with that wonderful color photo and continues with a paragraph about it.Then you will find the finished size and a materials and cutting list.Next are the instructions for making the blocks and, again, lots of graphics to guide your work.Templates are full sized so no running to the copier to enlarge them.Assembly and finishing suggestions wind up the project.I much prefer her "pattern packets" rather than the book form.It is easier to work with the templates on a flat surface that then possibly breaking the binding of the book.

Holly, poinsettias, pinwheels that look like peppermint candy, snow covered villages, Christmas tree ornaments, Christmas gifts wrapped with big bows, Candy Canes, Gingerbread Men (or gals if you give them a skirt!) and Stockings will keep your fingers busy for many hours of quilting fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ten projects for decorating or gifts offer pieced and appliqued projects replete with all kinds of interesting motifs
For a holiday title, Cheryl Almgren Taylor's DECK THE HALLS: QUILTS TO CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS packs in a collection of Christmas patterns for the home: everything from mantels and tables to doors. Ten projects for decorating or gifts offer pieced and appliqued projects replete with all kinds of interesting motifs, in full color.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gets you in the Christmas spirit
This is a beautiful volume that includes a variety of festive holiday projects. Besides gorgeous wall quilts to celebrate the season, there's a door banner to welcome your holiday guests, a mantel runner to decorate your hearth, toppers and runners to make your table extra special, and an elegant quilted stocking for Santa to fill.

Most of the patterns include appliqué, because as Cheryl put it, "I love the shapes and the graceful curves you can create, as well as the flexibility the technique provides." Of course you can use your favorite form of appliqué, but Cheryl gives you full illustrated instructions for the fusible-web machine method, and has even reversed the patterns for you. That's a real convenience.

Very comprehensive, the book includes a whole section of basic information about fabrics, threads, sewing machines, needles, tools, etc. That's before you even get to the Quiltmaking Basics: rotary cutting, fusible web appliqué, pre-assembly, bias vines, and even paper piecing!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best craft books I own...
I stage a craft workshop every Christmas, and I am always on the lookout for new ideas. This is one of the best books I have ever used.It has enough papercraft ideas to use for several years. The projects are divided into three categories -- Christmas cards, tree ornaments, and table decorations. The instructions are clear and are illustrated at every point with beautiful colored photos. Each project description includes a materials list as well as photos that show other finished projects made with the same techniques. All the projects are things that one might actually want to make--which isn't always true for some of the craft books I've ordered.

The only problem I have with the book is that it is from Britain, and a few materials don't necessarily go by the same names in the US, making them difficult to find with Internet searches.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great idea book for any Christmas crafter!
I saw this book on line and read all the reviews. I went ahead and purchased (such a good price through Amazon). I was pleasantly surprised to find it filled with many inspirational ideas for crafts as well asdecorating ideas for my home. I also loved the vintage Christmas houses and the book has instructions/patterns that are very easy to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book to flip through, holiday houses are very cute
I enjoyed looking through this book. Of particular interest to me were the adorable holiday houses. They have about 8 different templates and a lot of photos of them all decorated and displayed quite nicely. Since I ran across them in this book, I have seen more examples of them online, and they are very pretty. I'm planning on making some myself. There aren't many other projects however, hence the loss of a star.

2-0 out of 5 stars No craft projects
I was so disappointed by this book. There are a lot of pretty pictures but hardly any actual craft projects. It's more of a display of the author's and her mother's private Christmas decoration collection. The book gave me one or two ideas but all in all was not worth the money. I regret buying this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some ideas
I was anticipating this book to be full of vintage Xmas like the title says but instead most of the items are new! Except for the final chapter by Debbie Dusenberry and her store Curious Sofa. This was a chapter worth buying the book for. Great photography, ideas and display from her. She should have had more chapters or maybe a book of her own.
